Title: Recommend me some kung-fu movies
Post by: thecatamites on February 23, 2008, 08:54:07 pm
I just bought the dvd of this movie called 'Ong-Bak', an awesome and hilariously over-the-top martial-arts film... Anyway, seeing it has awakened in me a previously dormant desire to see beefy oriental people kicking each other in the face. The problem is, I'm not sure where to begin looking for more of these kind of films. I mean, which Bruce Lee movie is the best for beginners? Which Sonny Chiba film?
Anyway, I was hoping that some people could recommend some good kung-fu/martial arts movies to me. I'm not looking for any 'House of Flying Daggers'-type artsy stuff, just some simple, brutal movies that are low on plot and high on random violence.
So...any suggestions?

If you liked Ong-Bak, you would probably like The Protector. It has Tony Jaa, the protagonist from Ong-Bak.

If you're looking for really over-the-top nonsense, see if you can get Riki-Oh. If you're just in for regular kung-fu, see into getting Fong Sai Yook and Eye of the Dragon (Bruce Lee).

Ok, well Ong-Bak is more of a modern style martial arts film. Like Strangeluv said, if you liked that you should enjoy The Protector. The Protector and Tom Yom-Goong are technically the same movie, but the first is the American cut with shit removed and a different soundtrack. Personally I'd recommend getting the original version. Also you should check out Jet Li's Fearless, a great and epic film, but not exactly hilarious and over the top.

As for Bruce Lee, most of his movies are standalone. I recommend getting ENTER THE DRAGON first, as it's one of his more famous works. Beware of the stuff that came out AFTER Bruce Lee's death. They may be fun watches but most of them are just to cash some money in.

Sonny Chiba, get The Street Fighter, Return of the Street Fighter, Sister Street Fighter,  The Street Fighter's Last Revenge, and if you want Sister Street Fighter: Hanging by a Thread.

Like Strangeluv said, get Riki-Oh/Story of Riki. It's a Cantonese movie based off a Japanese manga which is the first NC-17 movie in Hong Kong for violence. It's hilariously over the top and ultra epic. If you can't handle extreme violence, don't check it out. The director of that movie, I believe also did the SHAOLIN VS EVIL DEAD series. If that title alone turns you on, then definitely check it.

If you want REAL CLASSIC KUNG-FU, I recommend my personal favorite SNAKE IN THE MONKEY'S SHADOW. Also lots of the Shaw Brothers stuff like "Come Drink with Me" have been very influential in the martial arts genre. Lots of the really cheap low quality stuff provide some very satisfying random action and violence.

Wow, crippled masters looks pretty good, if you like those old styled-movies you can check out of the older Jacki Chan movies that he made in China.

Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin <= Mystery kung fu :o
Half a loaf of kung-fu <= I really like this one

God, I love the begger clan.

Cool, thanks for all these... Especially 'The Protector' and 'Crippled Masters'. I'll check them out as soon as possible.
And it turns out the entire movie of 'Riki-Oh' is posted online on Google Video, so I'm gonna give that a shot now...

Warrior King is also a good film with Tony Jaa. Its pretty slow for the first 10 to 15 minutes or so but after that its pretty much non stop ass kicking.

Master of the Flying Guillotine is probably the best kung-fu movie ever.  I don't think you could call yourself a kung-fu film fan unless you've seen it.

Jet Li: Fearless and Hero are both amazing films, Hero has beautiful cinematography and is one of the best martial arts movies I have seen. I highly recommend it.

Warrior King and The Protector are the same thing I believe.

Get Jackie Chan's Legend of The Drunken Master, or something like that, it's in my opinion one of the better kung fu movies with good mix of humour and creative fighting.

Tom-Yum-Goong, Warrior King, and The Protector are the same. The only thing is that The Protector is a different cut from Tom-Yum-Goong/Warrior King, which cut out 25 minutes, and added a soundtrack by RZA.
