I have been thinking on using a 3d character maker to make the sprites in my game, I don't need them to be the best graphics aviable, but the idea is to make them and take pics of them in different poses, and then paste them in the spritesheet.
I'm thinking something that looks a nbit like diablo characters, I'm not sure if it's possible, or if the programs are too expensive (poser is like 100$ or not?) I would love to find a free one, maybe there is one lying around, hopefully designed to make chars and not orher stuff (like blender)
about quality I'm guessing that something like N64 or psx models, not like the last ps3 ones even gamecube ones...
hopefully someone can help. =)

There really is no such thing as a 3D character maker that I am aware of. Poser is as close as you will get to what you want. THe only other option is to use a 3D modelling package to create your own models.

Ask Bittorrent. He's got deals.

If you're looking for like... a 3d modeling program use blender.
http://www.blender.org/
(Annnnd I just realized you said not blender haha. But I can't seem to delete.)

I doubt there is going to be something out there that does the work of setting up a character for you. I mean, if you want to model a character, you are going to have to bite the bullet and learn how to do it from scratch.
I don't know much about 3d modeling, but I am quite confident that the only ones who will tell you different are trying to sell you something (which is counter-intuitive to the "free" criteria). I mean if there is a demand for something as specific as that, then the only people who would be willing to fill that demand will do so in the hopes of getting money.
I mean, there is no reason for a team of developers to spend 25x the amount of time developing a piece of software that does what anyone who has any practice in modeling eventually has to learn how to do... for free.

You could always use something like a model editor for half life 2 and use some of the models as reference (if you don't want that complex a model).

I don't know why you say you don't want Blender. It's perfectly capable of doing everything including modeling.

It seems interesting,I've to try it.
