Post by: ThugTears666 on March 04, 2008, 09:33:02 am
Hello there friends.

This topic dedicated to your childhood heroes! So tell us a little about who you looked up to when you were younger or even who you look up to now!

It's pretty straightforward and I will start us off with some people who I really thought were amazing when I was younger, this topic should actually be pretty fun.

Jordan was always my biggest hero.

Back in the day I used to love Michael Jordan, I collected all his basketball cards and had like 50 some of which were just of Michael Jordan doing routine things around the house.

I remember when Space Jam came out. I saw it at the movies and I took it so seriously it actually affected me emotionally and I thought it was amazing.
I brought the cd and knew every song by heart (first album I owned), I knew every little thing about him, Where he grew up, how he got famous, what shorts he wore to every big game etc.

I had other favourite NBA players but Jordan was always the king for me. I even memorized his kids names and sometimes I look him up on wikipedia or whatever to see what he's up to haha. (f*ck charles barkley)

The Undertaker

For a while I thought wrestling was pretty cool,I remember constantly having arguments with my mum about how real it was.
Even last year I was a little interested when WWE was on tv just because the undertaker was on.  He was so dark and cool, I was never quite as obsessed with him as I was with jordan but still the undertaker was pretty badass, he always won, he rode a motorbike and he liked heavy metal.

Chad Muska
The only wigger I ever liked, Muska had the best skateboards and the coolest style, he hung out with Wu Tang and was just the man overall.

Even now I think he is pretty cool (same with Jordan). Probally my last sports hero.
He somehow made this name for himself just based on his style; kids everywhere thought he was like the white 2pac who skated or something, back when me and my friend played tony hawks pro skater we used to have big fights over who got to be muska.

Metallica

Metallica don't really deserve me posting a photo of them, I remember when I first joined gw I used to argue with HybridZero all the time about how good they were. Now they are pretty boring for me and have gotten shittier with age. However when I really really liked them I was obsessed, it was the first band I truely loved and I nearly cried when Lars did the heavy metal sign and pointed at me, I actually remember saying to my best friend "I cant believe he saw me, he realises I'm alive", haha what a dick.
I had such a big obsession with them, I swear I had memorized every fact I could about them, I knew which paintings kirk had at his house, I knew what James' tatoos all looked like etc.
I guess I have them to thank for getting me into music and onto better things.

What about your childhood heroes?

I liked Jordan so much that even now if I walked down the street and I heard someone randomly saying "hey you know what, fuck michael jordan", I would probally turn around and be like "WHAT DID YOU SAY?", Jordan was better than Shaq because Shaq had no personality, Jordan was better than barkley cause Barkley had the temper of a dragon and threw phones through windows at people (true story).
Jordan was such a nice guy even though I didn't even know him I'm still pretty sure I could still trust him with anything, if I had a baby and it needed someone to look after it I would probally choose Jordan to babysit over an aunt.

well I didn't have heroes back then

but as an argentine I could say may current heroes are:

MANU GINOBILI
(http://media.collegepublisher.com/media/paper410/stills/13d9zcc0.jpg)

Only player in history to win the Euroleague, the NBA and the Olympics. Plus a second place in the World Cup.
Won the NBA ring 3 times, on 2003, 2005 and 2007 with the San Antonio Spurs. Almost had the MVP for the 2005 finals.
Considered one of the Spurs' Big Three together with Tim Duncan and french Tony Parker, he has lately become the more important of the three lately, playing his best basket yet and this last month has been on the level of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James in terms of best bballer.
Difference is that he is more of a team player than an individualist like the other 2 guys.
To me he's the best argentine sportman ever. He won everything except for that World Cup with a polemic last second in 2002.
I don't like Maradona because aside what he did for football, he's an asshole and should shut the fuck up.
Wearing the Argentine jersey, he defeated the Dream Team twice. Once at the 2004 Olympics, to go to the finals and then get the gold.

DAVID NALBANDIAN
(http://lalegion1.googlepages.com/david_master.JPG)

Perhaps one of the greatest underachievers of tennis.
Our best tennist player is Guillermo Vilas but I havent seen much of his playing style.
Nalbandian has one of the most atractive playing styles, which is why I love seeing him play.
Although he is also pretty frustrating as he can play masterfully and shitty all the time.
Is one of the very very few players without a bad head-to-head record against Nº1 of Tennis, Roger Federer. Currently it is 8 - 8
Never won a Grand Slam, but got to the Wimbledon finals, something never achieved by any argentine. Mostly because argies are clay players and Nalby isn't.
His big cups are the 2005 Master Cup defeating Federer.
And the 2007 Madrid and Paris Master Series. At Madrid he defeated the three top seeded players (Federer, Nadal and Djokovic (who won the last GSlam)) by playing completely demolishing games, specially against Nadal, who ate a bagel at the Paris final.
He only won 8 cups but he is known to be lethal when on the right frame of mind.

There are very, very few people I've ever genuinely looked up to in my life. Call me conceded, high horse, whatever, but it's true. None of them are famous public entities, but people I personally know.

Well, when I was small my heroes were mostly just POWER RANGERS, but at the moment I have a shitload.

Yeah, I know half of you will hate this list but:

Robert Rodriguez:
I love this guy because he managed to put together an incredible movie cheap, and make a career for himself without doing anything the Hollywood way. Plus he makes some pretty good movies too.

Quentin Tarantino:
I've read biographies and stuff, and he's a faggot with a big image problem. But he was just a kid who just enjoyed watching movies, and after being rejected again and again for his unique yet violent style, he finally made it big and showed the world what he got. I like his movies ok, sorry.

Christian Bale:
He's just TOO COOL.

Tom Cruise:
I really don't know why I like Tom Cruise. To me he just has this really cool style, where he's calm and just, so serious. He knows everything, he knows the truth, and he believes in it.

Kevin Smith:
He is probably one of top on my list of people who I look up to. This guy went crazy into debt to make Clerks. He's such a hilarious guy to listen to, and so open about his personal life. Even though he's had tons of ups and downs, K-Smith is probably one of those people I really think has the kinda life i want.

Ryuhei Kitamura:
The director of Versus and shit, he's just an Asian guy who went out and made some movies which were just awesome.

Hideo Kojima:
I picked up Metal Gear Solid 2 when I was young, and it really threw me into this whole universe that I've never ever experienced before. When I finished that game, I knew there was something ahead of me in life. After that I started buying the action figures, the comic books, I started watching movies. Seriously speaking, without fanboyism, MGS2 could be considered that seed which began all my hobbies and life's ambitions.

Miyamoto Musashi:
I don't like talking about the times when I was a huge japfaggot, but back then my favorite Samurai was Musashi. I read all these biographies and novels. He has this very honorific mindset and a really cool life's story.

John Waters:
He made a movie about shit and made a family movie that made fun of everything. I met him once, and he was a REALLY COOL dude.

Chef Boyardee:
This isn't a joke, but I seriously think Chef is a really damn cool person. I'm not a funny guy at all, but his sense of humor and imagination is really something I wish I had.

Edison Chen:
Besides acting in my favorite movie of all time, Infernal Affairs 2, this guy is just, I have no idea. I don't really consider him a big hero, but someone I think is damn cool. After all, he thinks he's black, he can't sing for shit, but everyone keeps buying his albums.

Malcolm X:
I started liking Malcolm X ever since I saw the Spike Lee movie about him. Thanks to that movie I can't stop saying racial bullshit about white people all the time. It's like a reactionary impulse.

Martin Scorcese:
Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, etc. Those are the kinda movies I want to make in my life.

Biggie Smalls:
He was my neighbor when I was young, but I don't remember. It was like this outdoor apartment area, and this little house area I lived in, Biggie lived in the top. Him and P Diddy used to party and play music all the time. Plus my parents saw him get arrested in 1997. The cops were in our backyard with torchlights looking for shit in the grass.

Kevin Federline:
He's just cool.

Bill Cosby:
I've heard him speak at a book signing. Most people make fun of him, his ideals and such, but hearing him speak was really a great experience. He's so firm about his people and really helps out alot of young Black-Americans who are struggling.

Stanley Kubrick:
I've only discovered his work quite recently, but I've really been drawn into it and his styles of film making.

Eli Roth:
Yeah, I know Hostel and Hostel 2 sucked. I don't give a shit because I liked them. He has this really radical personality and I just think he's badass.

Justin Lin:
I've only recently started following his work, but basically this guy gives me a little hope to be Asian. His movies about characters who are Asian, characters who are not stereotypical, but whoever they want to be.

Diablo Cody:
I love her work. She made it from a stripper to an oscar award winning writer.

Takeshi Kitano:
Filmmaker and actor. I forgot why I like him.

I noticed most of the people I listed are famous in the entertainment business. i guess it's because I really have a desire to be recognized by people for who I am and what I do. I'm not entirely satisfied with my individuality in some sense.

Sorry, but I really suck at posting. Alot of my writing just doesn't come together. I'd prefer to put up some in depth explanations for each person, but for now this is what I got.

Really nice post Afura btw.

haha, i remember thinking jordan was cool because he always seemed happy, like he genuinely enjoyed everything and he was a very happy person. i've never watched a game of his in my life but whenever we jumped when we were 7 we'd shout "Jordan!" and i remember feeling bad when he changed to baseball because it was his dream or whatever (that's what all the kids at school said) and he wasn't very good at it.

the closest i had to something like this would be michael jackson (i am 100% serious). i remember i would wear this ugly hat, make a gun out of duplo, and run around pretending to be michael jackson. i remember it because my parents didn't want me playing with guns at all, so they said michael jackson wouldn't use a gun, so i started hiding the guns (i had two but one had a broken peice on the end so i didn't like it as much, i'd mostly use the one)

i would watch moonwalker back to back and one year on my birthday (i think it was my biggest birthday at around that time, i had a cake in the shape of a bat symbol) my dad got me his authorised biography or whatever.

man, what i wouldn't give to be 17 again

I don't think I had any real childhood heroes. I never aspired to be anyone else. ok well I guess fictional characters my heroes were verymuch The Doctors and Fox Mulder. They weren't people I wanted to be though but more reference points in the whole WHAT WOULD DUFFMAN DO? moments. I never liked sports much apart from wrestling, but those aren't the kinda guys I could take as heroes.
I mean now there's tonnes of people alive/dead I look up to in various aspects like music, art, comedy, cinema. But I can never say I aspire to be like them.

Phil Mitchell

The 'ardest East Ender ever to come out of the East End.
Phil's a hard man. He's been shot, he's the gangland king of Walford and he doesn't back down from his enemies. No one should mess with this geezer, or they'll likely get their nut done in, or worse, be killed by his cronies.

Phil's done the lot, and his brother Grant ain't a soft cunt either. Phil Mitchell is who I aspire to be, his sheer class and demeanour with which he belittles even his most credibly dangerous enemies is nothing short of phenomenal.

well i have been waiting for a thread like this so that i could tell all of you about my #1 hero  :fogetcool:

DeAndre Ramone Way
(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/36480/soulja-boy.jpg)
You all probably know him by his stage name Soulja Boy Tell 'Em or, more succinctly, Soulja Boy, but however you know him, this young man is a hero to me and all of America's youth.
Rising up from a modest beginning in Chicago, Illinois, he was raised by his mother and grandmother. By five years old, he was already ripping out mad flows and that signature Chicago style, and after moving to Atlanta, he solidified his now famous style with some real Southern flavor.
And then, when all hope was lost, he brought us Crank That (Soulja Boy). Quoting from Wikipedia, "his music has been banned from some school dances for sexual content or innuendo". Soulja on, Soulja Boy.

...4 beers short of a 6pac.

My hero was the Red Ranger from the original Power Rangers, Austin St. John. I met him when I was a kid and there is a Polaroid somewhere of me and my brother (TSG) in his lap. I've since seen him in a porn, which makes the idea of me in his lap no longer a nice memory.
