The Seattle Biomedical Research Institute will pay volunteers as much as $4,000 to be bitten by mosquitoes infected with malaria.
Scientists say no lives are in danger because the volunteers can be cured. The institute is testing which vaccines work fastest.
The head of the program, Dr. Patrick Duffy, says volunteers will spend several nights under medical supervision in a hotel.
All of the human trials will be reviewed for safety by the Food and Drug Administration.
4 grand ain't bad. Hmm...

Although some are under development, no vaccine is currently available for malaria; preventative drugs must be taken continuously to reduce the risk of infection.
It is my belief that when a malaria vaccine is produced, it will probably be based off of research from patients carrying the sickle cell anemia trait, since those carriers are resistant to malaria.
I don't see how the FDA can pass this. General rules of scientific experimentation state that scientists should never put the lives of human subjects on the line. If they haven't already, they should at least test this on rats first (if it is true).
edit: I was under the impression that they actually had multiple malaria vaccinations in their possession and were testing to see which worked the best. That's not true at all.
This is a much, much better article: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/health/2004261357_malaria05m.html
Now it makes sense. They modified the malaria strand that they inject people with to make the parasite cureable and the disease under control. You get all of the early malaria symptoms without the lasting effects and the death thing.

I have a friend who had gotten malaria a while back. From his stories, It's not something that I would think of as a good trade off for four-thousand dollars.
-
a 4 hour drive and 4 grand? i am so down to get malaria
-
P.S. I bet $4000 that they make you sign an injury/death release form.
Disclaimer: In the event of death due to malaria, I hereby release Seattle Biomedical Research from all claims of death.
-
What? Malaria decreases mana cost, spell cool down, and increases cast speed... at some miniscule cost that isn't really worth mentioning. Why would they want to develop a cure for it?
I'd be down for it if it wasn't for the fact that I could not possibly be a farther drive for me within the continental US.

It isn't for 18-24 months. I already asked to be added to their contact list. 4000 for a week? Sounds good to me.

enjoy your coffin!

enjoy your coffin!
No one has died from this and thousands have participated.

This is quite interesting. The FDA approving the testing would make me feel a little more comfortable about it. However, if someone were to die or something were to go wrong, I think the generated controversy could possibly get this thing shut down.
-
Yeah i dont know if i would do this or not, sounds kinda good though haha
-
Why pay for it when so many people already get it for free?
Anyway I'd certainly allow myself to be infected with Malaria for that much money

Symptoms of malaria include fever, shivering, arthralgia (joint pain), vomiting, anemia (caused by hemolysis), hemoglobinuria, and convulsions. There may be the feeling of tingling in the skin, particularly with malaria caused by P. falciparum. The classical symptom of malaria is cyclical occurrence of sudden coldness followed by rigor and then fever and sweating lasting four to six hours, occurring every two days in P. vivax and P. ovale infections, while every three for P. malariae.[30] P. falciparum can have recurrent fever every 36-48 hours or a less pronounced and almost continuous fever.

i would do this, but then again, i don't have any qualms with doing funky medical shit for $$$. right now, i am participating in a quit-smoking study at my university for $250. i lied about how long i've been smoking (said 3 years, 8 months in reality) and i actually have no intention of quitting, but WHATEVER.
i also sell my blood plasma three or four times a month.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Pandabear I wanna be like you when I grow up
-
shit son, i'd inject a malaria-infected syringe straight into my dick vein for $4000
That is a seriously respectable amount of bones just to lay in bed playing castlevania for a week with a neutered strain of jungle flu. I would rather do that than work a minimum wage job for a year, at least.
-
of course there's the risk that the treatment or the disease or both could make your head swell to beachball size before you die $4000 richer
-
I... actually kind of want to do this now. How do you sign up?

It isn't for 18-24 months so you have to get on a mailing list. http://www.sbri.org/Home/
