COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - An aide says science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke has died.

Rohan De Silva says Clarke died early Wednesday after suffering from breathing problems. He was 90.

Clarke is the author of more than 100 books, including “2001: A Space Odyssey.” That work became the basis of the 1968 film of the same name, and spawned three book sequels.

this sucks. :(

Everybody dies. You know you're getting old when your heroes die one by one...

I'm not really getting old am I?

Damn, and the only thing I've read of his is Time's Eye... which was pretty stupid.

This is sad though, because he did a lot for science fiction.  Not quite Asimov, but he definitely deserves a place in the hall of fame of sci-fi.

You know he was 90. it was time for him to die. His life was over and it was a pretty good one I guess.

Nothing even interesting about this except that he was a good author I suppose. Getting a little carried away with these topics IMO.

the movie and the book were made alongside each other. i enjoyed the sequels though.

he made a lot of UNSOLVED MYSTERY books as well which filled my childhood

They were. However, that doesn't say the book: both the film and the book are based on the original screenplay.

This is sad stuff, he was such a great writer (and, by most accounts, a great guy). :fogetsad:

I'm a big fan of Arthur C. Clarke, but he was an old man, it was probably his time to go.  It makes me want to go back and reread Rendevous with Rama, I love that book.

i heard the case was dismissed because he's famous A PEDO DIED HEH. actually I swear he came out as for pedophilia at some point but oh well.

also I never liked Clarke's work much. it was all pretty much the best example of scifi with no real rason to keep reading. he was a smart guy but kind of a boring writer!

that being said, harmless old man (possible pedo heh just throwing it out there) died, which is sad! he was old as shit though, I thought he was dead already.

oh so basically there's a good amount of conjecture that since it's Sri Lanka, one of the most corrupt governments in the world, Clarke paid the cops off.

or maybe instead of wildly assuming and speculating about his hidden pedophilia we can just kind of accept the fact that there is not enough evidence to have a valid opinion??

nah.

I mean, Sri Lanka.

come on.

thats where you GO to have sex with underage boys (other than Thailand).

it's pretty widely assumed he was guilty and paid off the authorities, I knew I didn't just make that up!

''Once they have reached the age of puberty, it is OK... It doesn't do any harm,'' said Clarke, who has lived in Sri Lanka for 40 years.

"I am trying to think of the youngest boy I have ever had because, of course, you can't tell it here. I think most of the damage comes from the fuss made by hysterical parents afterwards. If the kids don't mind, fair enough,'' he was reported to have said in the interview which was conducted at his house.

On Sunday the newspaper declared Clarke to be a self-confessed paedophile. He was quoted admitting as much, and a Sri Lankan "friend" - head of current affairs at the Sri Lankan Broadcasting Company - alleged that Clarke was still having sex with boys "a few months ago".

so you were saying?

"The newspaper" those articles are referring to is the Sunday Mirror, hardly a reputable source. Clarke was cleared of charges (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/s/w_asia/74938.stm) by the Sri Lankan authorities.

It's also widely known that the charges were false!

i just don't know why you would freely admit your pedophilia to a newspaper if you were going to have to end up claiming it was made up.  i mean assuming the quotes are real did he really think that it wouldn't ruin his reputation?

I have to admit, I always thought "he's not dead yet?" whenever encountering news about him. Sad to see him go; he was a good writer.

I just went to the website, it doesn't look nearly as bad as the Enquirer, it's just a tabloid, and quoting straight up made up shit is pretty weird behavior instead of just saying "ARTHUR C. CLARKE: POSSIBLE PEDO" and skipping quotes.

also (and this is a gay card to pull) but a lot of Sri Lankans have come forward and said as much. unfortunately these are all private conversations and I can't give a news link (the closest thing I have to one is an SA mod talking about how some Sri Lankan friends told him as much), but the rumor was definitely not started by the Mirror!

oh well don't care too much.

IF YOU WERE IN SRI LANKA AND HAD TH EMONEY

ARE YOU TELLING ME YOU WOULDN'T MOLEST KIDS.
