Title: Smashing Pumpkins and QOTSA live.
Post by: ThugTears666 on March 21, 2008, 11:12:12 am
Man I went to this last night and it was so amazing I had to fight the urge to rub one out whilst watching.

Queens of the stone age were up first and they were really awesome live, heaps of soloing and he sounded like a pretty charismatic dude when talking to the crowd, I'm sure a few people saw him out on the town afterwards, he talked about drugs and sex quite alot and starting singing a cover of Amy Winehouse "Rehab". The band members were all really into the performance unlike the two newbies in Smashing Pumpkins who kinda just stood there.

Smashing Pumpkins did the whole 9 minutes of the track "United States" off their new album which was awesome, it was so cool live it was like some Dream Theater shit honestly!
Jimmy Chamberlin killed the drumming, Billy played really really well (I never realised how good he is at guitar!), they did acoustic covers of Perfect and Thats the way my love is.
They also did like a 15 minute instrumental led by Billy and everyone sung him happy birthday afterwards as it was kinda recent.

They did an encore and Billy climbed up on the rafters, waved directly at me haha and was insulting Jack Johnson quite alot which was really random I remember exactly what he said:

Quote
Sorry we arent that jack johnson surf shit that you all seem to like....nah i love jack johnson!
He just could never beat me in a fight, I'd call him curious george, after all he wrote that song

Was quite strange.

So yeah AWESOME gig and I'd been really excited about it for a while.

What bands are you guys looking forward to seeing or what was the last gig you went to?

Here are the best pictures I took:

Iggy and the Stooges. In July. At a venue five minutes away from my house. With Stiff Little Fingers opening. And I've got a ticket. I couldn't be more excited if Keira Knightley suddenly appeared stark naked on my desk holding a solid gold brick in one hand and a copy of Action Comics #1 in the other and ordered me to fill her with my seed. In fact, if she did, I'd be all like, 'Do you mind? I was thinking about the Stooges, and I'll thank you not to interrupt me.' And she'd be all embarrassed and just stand there for about half an hour while I finish thinking about the incredible, mindblowing, pantswetting awesomeness of actually seeing Iggy Pop in person, and also seeing Mike Watt from the Minutemen playing bass on the same stage at the same time. But then I'd give in and do her, because she looked sad and I am essentially a generous and good-tempered guy. So, um, yeah. The Stooges! Whoo!
Wait, someone else was playing a few days later at the same venue, who was it again? Lemme think for a second... Oh yeah, it was Leonard Fucking Cohen.

Seems like you had fun time.

Last gig I went to was Porcupine Tree in December. A few cool bands are playing here in Finland in the next few months but I don't really care about them enough to actually see them live, except Boris who are playing in May so I might go see them. Porcupine Tree and Opeth are playing in the same festival in July so I'll most likely go there. Some other cool bands are going to be there too, like The National, CMX and Interpol.

EDIT: Oh ya, Incubus are playing here in June so that could be worth going to.

That looked really fun! Last time QOTSA played here (in Toronto) they had some really mediocre band open up that bored the hell out of everyone but once they got on it was so energetic :Dā€‹. And yes, Josh is a funny guy.

Last concert I went to see was Gogol Bordello a few weeks ago. I don't imagine many people here at GW like them (or maybe have never heard of them?), it's categorized "gypsy punk" and you could check it out. It was really fun and no one in the whole venue was standing still.

I'm looking forward to seeing A Silvet Mt. Zion in June :D

I am so very jealous of you right now.  I would give just about anything to see either of those bands live, but unfortunately the chances of either coming near me are very slim (if mostly impossible).  Regardless though, glad to see that you had a good time at both of them.

seein The Mars Volta sometime next month when they come back... the first time around Cedric fell ill between the concert that Ryan saw them at and the one that I was supposed to see them so they cancelled a large segment of their tour, but they're having it again soon. April 18th or something like that. Pretty pumped

because I like listening to music, not going to Big gigs.
I might like smaller gigs, but I hate the big ones.
The only logical reason I find to go to a gig is I WANT TO SEE THIS MUSICIAN IN PERSON!!! and I have like too few in my list, Tom Waits being the highest thing there.
I dunno, sometimes I think I should go places more often but dont seem to be very interested.

yeah i'm also not big on concerts. i've never really had an experience at one which was better than something i could have done for free with friends while listening to a record, if that was the kind of atmosphere i wanted to create. there are just too many things like assholes, body odour and sticky floors which make it all a bit crap.

that's different for small intimate gigs or street bands, that is a special kind of experience, but this kind of stuff doesn't feel quite like fun to me.

Seeing a band live is a whole new experience, it's the way most bands should be seen rather than on a recording.

Maybe its different for you guys in the states because concerts can be so massive.

ITS A WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE IN THAT PEOPLE ARE SO FUCKING CLOSE TO YOU AND SO WET AND YOU CANT FUCKING DANCE AT ALL.
Small gigs are cool because you can end up meeting people.
But the small gigs are so underground I cant care.
OH YEAH AND STICKY FLOORS AND IT IS SO FUCKING LOUD.
also I'm not from the states, I'm argie which means ONLY RARELY something interesting comes and I either: 1) miss it because it is too fucking underground (like Devendra Banhart, holy fucking hell how did I miss this) 2) dont care because it is a big shitty band and ergo on a big stage whatever
I dont buy music mags so I'm just not informed about WHEN DEVENDRA BANHART COMES. I just bought one last month as A STRANGE THING TO DO and I just found out that Interpol was coming, I own a record by these faggots but since I dont care much about gigs I didnt go.
Well sometimes I regret, sometimes I dont give a damn, and sometimes I want to make a gig sometime

I've only been to one concert that was from well-known bands that wasn't christian (my parents are responsible for that last part). I went to go see The End, Animosity, HORSE the Band, and BTBAM. The only ones I really enjoyed were Animosity and BTBAM. To many people were going ape-shit during HORSE for me to really enjoy it. And I don't mean ape-shit in as lets have a good time, but as in I'm so Hardcore, look at me flail my arms to prove that I'm so hardcore. BTBAM was fucking awesome. Animosity was pretty intense (regardless of bad their music is) and The End was alright. It was a pretty awesome experience, especially since I got to meet some of the dudes from BTBAM. As far as upcoming gigs, I was going to go to summer slaughter but I really don't feel like driving that far. I do want to go to something though.

I have free tickets for all of these concerts coming to Montreal:
Dimmu Borgir + Behemoth + Keep of Kalessin
Symphony X + Epica + Into Eternity (not going)
Paganfest
Arch Enemy + Dark Tranquility (might be going
Opeth (definetly going even though it's not Martin Lopez on drums anymore :(ā€‹:()
At The Gates + Municipal Waste

And I might be getting to go to other concerts like Neuraxis and such for free. I just hope we'll get some doom or gothic metal shows in here soon. Katatonia last year was frickin' awesome especially Swallow The Sun and meeting them was just insane. If only Anathema would come...
