http://www.destructoid.com/my-life-as-a-king-where-i-pay-for-microtransactions-what--77614.phtml
I was talking to my friends when this little link came up. I wondered what it was for. My friend just happens to be a Squenix whore and buys whatever they sell regardless of how good or bad it may be. Well I think they might have finally pushed him a bit too far. The new crystal chronicles forces you to spend wiipoints(which is money transformed into wiistuff) to buy the other three races among other things. They put it out there quite blatantly too. Apparently, the game has some annoying content that you either have to purchase or deal without having and not getting the full experience. Not that other games don't have add-ons, it's just that apparently, this game fucking flaunts the add-ons in your face.
I know game add-ons are the norm now days, but most of the time they're just ADD-ONS not something thats thrown in your face. This is, however, just news that I've heard.

That's pretty dull. I've heard about this game for a while and it looked kinda cool so far. This move surprises me though. There's one thing to have DLC that gives you more stuff over what the previous game had to offer, but to add this straight away and take away 3/4th of the content is pretty awful and a terrible idea.
Square isn't the only ones to be blamed though. I suspect that Nintendo has worked out some sort of deal with them, much like Microsoft do with their MSP.
-
Haha, wow. That's a pretty low move I think. Square-Enix is making crappier decisions as each month passes by, I think.
-
uhhh i dunno guys i think this is a pretty cool idea. look at it this way: you're getting the full game experience - right? and then there is THREE TIMES more content than the full game you have already played through! that is pretty cool in itself, but you aren't gonna have to *sigh* grind to get the extra content or anything laaaame like that - you can buy it! easy peasy.
honestly i think it'll be like buying a brand new crystal chronicles classic 4 times over. i'd feel pretty lucky to have that much excitement in my future.
oh and heh, don't buy'em all in one day!
-
I can understand free MMOG's doing this as their source of income... but what the fuck is this? They're not even trying to hide the fact that they are milking their series any more.
-
In Battlefield Bad Company your going to have to pay for more guns! Seriously this micro transaction thing is getting ridiculous.
-
This sort of thing is acceptable under reasonable circumstances. Make a full game first. That's one requirement for micro content. Release the full game. Have people buy the game, and enjoy it. Then as time goes on, feel free to add more content, that you don't have to buy.
But this? Fuckin' ridiculous. You basically are buying a demo, "here, try this race, and if you like it, you can buy the FULL game and have all the races!"
Man, I will not be buying this.
-
Does it suck? yes. So guess what, DON"T BUY IT!
Only way you will be heard. Just don't buy it.
Why do you think microtransactions are all the rage? Because you idiots keep buying them.
Gonna go get my FREE maps for halo now.

Nintendo actually announced last month that they were extending some special contract to participating companies that allowed the spending of wii points for online features.
I guess this is the first game to use it. Sadly enough, I guarantee hundreds of thousands of players will eat this shit up.

who was going to buy another crystal chronicles anyway
come on did anyone play the one for gc????
edit:
actually I am going to buy it because I liked the gc one
but fuck the extra content I will just be the one they give me
-
I remember back in my day when you'd only be able to play the first level but that's because the game was hard as fuck and not because they forced you to pay for more levels
like battletoads
-
I really don't see why everyone is getting all bent out of shape over this. The game itself is a WiiWare title that only costs 1500 points (~$15). The DLC only costs 100~300 points ($1~$3). Using some quick math, buying all three races will only cost you (assuming max costs) 2400 points (~$24). So essentially you are getting a Wii game at half the price of normal Wii games, yet somehow this is some sort of outrage because you don't pay for the whole thing up front?

cmon battletoads wasn't THAT hard
it was the bike and snake pit levels that were really difficult, not the first level

Heh, that's why it's such a bad decision. If they just sold the whole thing for 2400 points, then they'd make even more money (assuming less than 100% of the people will unlock everything in any other instance) and people wouldn't be getting bent out of shape about it! It's about business and consumer psychology, and it looks like Squeenix is in the dark when it comes to deciding what constitutes as "suitable selling behavior" in the public's eye.
Even if it does result in a concept that "technically" should make the game more sellable than before.
-
I am not profoundly offended by this news like some of you guys seem to be but I do think that it is a pretty retarded pricing scheme. It's probably a reasonable price overall and everything but it does seem pretty weird to take a complete game and divide it into a series of microtransactions rather than offer a complete game for a full price up front.
Although it does seem a little bit like a pay-to-play demo.

I'm pretty sure Square-Enix has more business experience than anyone on these boards.
Secondly, everyone here is assuming that everyone that wants to play this game cares about the downloadable content. I want to give the game a shot, but I don't care about the downloadable content, and I would rather save $9. In fact, if the game were priced at $24, I probably wouldn't buy it, because at that point I might as well buy a DS game, or just get a real Wii game. WiiWare titles are meant to be short arcade like games, not full blown retail affairs.
Thirdly, everyone here is assuming that they some how divided the full game into multiple parts that you have to purchase. This isn't the case. The downloadable content is merely extra dungeons, races and buildings. There is NO NEW GAMEPLAY that this content adds. I didn't see people get bent out of shape paying $30 for game expansion packs, but for some reason charging $3 for a new race that some people may not care about is some how out of line. I really don't understand how people think that it is fine for RockBand to charge you for extra songs (Should have been in the original game!) but it is evil for Square to charge you for extra quests (Despite the fact Oblivion did the same thing with Knights of the Nine and no one cared).
I will concede though, the fact that they are considering charging for extra costumes is pretty absurd though. But I thought that was absurd when Oblivion charged money just to give your horse armor.

my thoughts exactly.

One word: "GAY".
(so I don't get warned, let me explain; I think having to waste Wiipoints on that is utter gay. Like FF8's damned pocketstation-only GF's. Total BS man. Totally gay.)
-
The problem with micropayments is that content restriction tends to follow. Support the development of F/OSS and you will be rewarded with a better, freer product.
-

That's crazy.
In Australia we're already paying up to 120 AUD (110 US) for PS3/360 games and 100 AUD (92 or so US) for Wii games, and this on top of it (as well as forcing players to have online) is just ridiculous.
Not happy!
-
Care to comment Kezay?????
-
I don't care that much, because it's not like it is the first game to do this. The only part that brings me down is I am already paying over 60 dollars for my games and I would rather not have to pay extra money for a couple more hours of gameplay.
The sad part is this looks like it's going to be the norm pretty soon and that sucks hard.

Because Square Enix know what they doing (f'in with its fanbase is what I mean)
but yeah to me micro-transactions should have to be completely inane stuff like MALIBU STACIE WITH NEW HAT and not actual significant stuff that we know they could've given away just as easy

The difference is Rock Band made a full game, complete with a shit ton of songs to use from default. You don't need to buy anything extra. In this... it just seems a bit more ridiculous. The game isn't even out, yet they are selling extra races right away? Rock Band built. Races aren't usually little things. If I recall the original CC had a lot of races to choose from? I dunno, this all just seems like a dick move to me.
-
Oh man I thought it was saying "races" like something to do with racetracks - well first of all Square's racist for saying those races are worth more but also that'd be like if Mortal Kombat had 1 CHARACTER (Well there was that Sub-Zero game but it sucked so case in point)
Well it's not exactly like that but I assume it's something like playing the original Final Fantasy and all you can choose is FIGHTER - if it's something like that must completely ruin your chance of getting the same experience as someone who pays for the extra stuff
Haha this was unintentional but awesome

This justifies my initial fear with microtransactions. Like a lot of people, I was worried companies would ship a hollow game that could only be filled with nickels and dimes.
Destructoid's little word-highlighting ad-bot has a sense of sarcasm apparently

Races are not a major thing in this game. I feel like the majority of people that are complaining don't even know anything about the game. It is a city building game, you don't go on adventures, you don't explore for mythril axes, all you do is build and maintain a city. If you have a monster problem, you hire heros and they go out and fight for you.
To continue using the crystal to build up the settlement, the player must accumulate spirit power which must be obtained from the dungeons and caves that surround the town. Instead of actually gathering the spirit power first hand, the game prompts the player to recruit soldiers to do so. These soldiers are paid via taxes the player collects from the residents of the town, and the player can follow their progress via message boards placed around town.
The only thing buying an additional race effects is instead of one of your hired heroes being a Clavat, you can make them a Selkie. Other than that, from my understanding of the game, the rest of the gameplay is exactly the same regardless if you have 1 race, or all 4.
-
oh noez someone trying a new business perspective, fuck them for trying new things
-
Yeah, JC is right. You get a FULL GAME for $15, regardless of whether you think it's full or not. There may be tons of shit that they COULD'VE PUT IN FOR FREE but instead they give you the option of whether you really want that. I think it's better. I hate unnecessary clutter shit. Being able to play a game from start to finish for only $15? That's an awesome deal. Like it? Then you can buy some of the other shit. At most you'll still be paying LESS than a brand new game anywhere else. You get the OPTION of buying the other stuff.
How is this not a good thing?
I understand people being outraged before reading it being $15, but jesus. That's a sweet fucking deal for a brand new game.
-
haha sorry then
but you know if the topic creator doesn't explicitly say it the whole thread could turn into "too long didn't read"
-
Okay I didn't know this was like, a budget or wiiware game, or whatever it is. That changes a lot. Thanks Johnny for clearing that up. I don't really care anymore, it's no big deal.
-
i dont think that this is the ACTUALL crystal chronicles that was in the works for wii. this is kind of like another original offshoot. i think there is another more official crystal chronicles coming out as well. after all, a real wii game is more than the wii's system memory can hold...thats for damn sure.
-
How is this not a good thing?
because they advertised the game with multiple races, and are now subtracting a feature just to make money, as opposed to Rock Band which never said OVER 300 SONGS (later).

You still get all of that for the price of a regular game ($40) if you want it. If you don't, then you don't have to pay for it. Maybe their advertising sucked but it's still a great deal. Like I said before, I wouldn't play through the game with all of the characters if nothing changes. So having the option of paying for that shit would be a great deal for me. $15 for a full game? Great.

first off it sounds incredibly optimistic to assume suddenly it's a full game with replay value (guess what this is part of what makes something a full game often) when previous marketing establishes something else.
like, if I say, NEW FIGHTING GAME FEATURING 20 CHARACTERS and when you get it it only 5 characters are playable unless you pay extra money, would you say it's a full game? you wouldn't accept this in any other game probably, and I think you're viewing the races too much like "optional characters" instead of, you know, part of the game.
this idea that Squaresoft won't make intellectually corrupt decisions and instead will ship a fully formed game that doesn't need additional races (even though it's pretty clear this is a new idea and the previous version had all four races) in order to be a full game is kind of optimistic.
optional content is extraneous shit that some people will want, some won't. deliberately denying your players content they would be pretty STUPID not to want and then claiming "oh well it's still cheap" is kind of bullshit.
-
i dont see how this is a bad thing at all maybe i dont want the extra side races and so if I paid 40$ i'd just be wasting some of my money, now I can pay 15$ and HEY IM GOOD TO GO but if I want them then YES.
choices are never bad imo. (unless if its for a fighting game + characters since that completely upsets the competitive balance)
