Title: Beat'em ups of the old times
Post by: zengage on March 28, 2008, 12:20:46 am
Hey guys I was just wondering, what was your favorite beatem' ups of the olds times?

My favorite has to be Guardian Heroes, with its multiple storylines up to six people playing at one time and the memorable character the undead knight. For almost a year myself and five up my friends would run to my house after school and throw down in the versus mode, being all evenly matched it would call for quite the epic battles. And with capability of plays as every single villian and boss, the combonation for battles were endless.

Now how about yourselves? I know a few of you must have a few good stories about the old school beatem'ups.

My favorite was Cyborg Justice on genesis, but I also liked Streets of Rage series. Also Double Dragon on the NES.

Oh yea, and River City Ransom 2 was definitely fun, albeit short. It needed the weapons/object throwing that made part 1 a blast to play, if you ask me.

I don't think any one game, let alone a beat 'em up, has changed my life.

Back in the day, a friend of mine's dad owned an arcade... And well when it shutdown instead of selling off the machines he decided to keep all of them. And well it was a blast being able to play old classics like the simpsons, turtles in time and Metal Slug 1 and 2 for free when ever we wanted too!

This.

So many fond memories.

I third this.
Turtles IV had everything that made the second one (the Arcade Game) great, and more.
Insanely short, but still fun.

didn't you guys ever play those x-man and simpsons beat em up games at the arcade with your friends? those games were the best. everyone always wanted to be wolverine. my friend david and i also tried to beat captain america and the avengers a million times but we couldn't do it without cheats.

During elementary school, I was invited to this kid's birthday party at an arcade, and I spent the entire time playing the Simpsons game. Actually, I stayed for an hour after the party ended when everybody else had left, and I was at the last boss when my parents forcibly dragged me out because the place was going to close in 10 minutes.

But Turtles in Time is probably my favorite beat-em-up ever, mostly because the music fucking ruled and it was Ninja Turtles. My cousins had a copy of the game, so whenever I went over there we would always get into big controller-swinging fights over who got to be Michealangelo and our parents would take the game away and force us to play Donkey Kong Country instead.

Beat-em-ups were a very important feature of my childhood!

I personally loved the Simpsons arcade game. I especially liked how every character had their own unique move AND how you could combine two characters for a short time for an added touch of originality.

yeah I remember the simpsons arcade game, that was awesome. My childhood holiday memories are of pushing kids younger or older aside so I could get to play it (it always attracted a crowd so as soon as you died, someone would always offer you some money to carry on and they can watch)

Aside from all of the awesome games that have been mentioned all ready I have to pimp: Comix Zone!

Man I loved playing that game! I never had a Genesis, but whenever I'd chill at my friends house, I'd mooch that to the max! The gameplay being set in comic book panels and being able to tear away the paper to find items amazed me back in the day. Warranted, all I had was an Atari 2600 and a NES from 1989-1996, so I was easily amazed at newer videogames.

I've played many beat'em ups, but only one has truly warmed my heart. (aka, liked so much I made boss videos of it)
And that's the Streets of Rage series, or in particular, Streets of Rage 2.
That game had such presentation, especially in many of its bosses.
And of course the music.
I liked SOR 3, but the original version though, because the character colors were kind of ugly on the US version, and the story was weird.

Comix Zone was mad awesome too, as stated on the post above me.

Altered Beast

Just cause it was the most hilarious thing ever back in the day. The voice acting was terrible and cheesy, the beast forms were either overpowered or had really retarded flaws, and the bosses felt like something made out of Klik 'n' Play.

little fighters rules but is completely impossible on the highest difficulty levels.

I would have a team made of Firenzes and that big demon guy (using the cheat) and we could never beat that last stage.

River City Ransom for NES was awesome but the GBA version was all trying to be updated to year 2000 and trying to be half the Japanese game and it just came off as a big pile of crap and/or dongs imo
