Title: How long have you been here, what have you learned and why did you stay?
Post by: Dave on April 07, 2008, 12:35:09 am
I was browsing through the way back machine and thought it would be cool to find out how long members have been at GW for and what they feel they have learned from their experience here.

Personally I have been browsing GW ever since its existence. I didn't start posting on the forums until 2003 but I used GW for resources for my "kool final fantasy 7 remake game yeh!". I have learned a lot about programming and website development from GW over the years and I also feel I have matured a lot as an e-person. When I first started posting on the forums in 2003 I was a childish 14 year old who didn't have a clue about the INTERNETS. I have stayed around after all this time because of the community. There have been times I have left (for a year at one point) but I always find myself coming back. Members (past and present) like chef, ramirez, drule, steel, hundley, diggity dawg, drfunk, dragonslayer really help make this community what it is. It wouldn't be the same without you guys.

Edit: Or wouldn't have been the same.

I first learned about gaming world about 1-3 months before i joined. I learnt a lot i guess, There are jerks and good people on the internet being one of them, to a lot about culture and how people live, act and react to me from other places. if that makes any sense :P not sure what else to say.

I've been here since like June 2001 but I didn't start posting till around April 2002.  Oh shit my GW anniversary is in three days isn't it wooooooaaahhh.

Anyway I'm sure I've learned a lot but fuck if I can remember what it is.

Joined back in 2004, which was about grade 10 for me, probably about when I was 15 years old.

It's hard to say what I learned, but it mostly has to do with acting more mature, and using the things I learned here IRL....grammar, words and junk like that.

Honestly, GW isn't my main 'forum hangout', so I'm going to be the first to admit that it's the RPG Making community that brought me and and kept me here for years, and still keeps me here. But that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy hanging around here and the various people I've met. I was markedly more immature (and disliked!) when I first got here and started getting active, and stayed that way for a long while, but I'll say that my experience here has helped my outlook on things a lot.

I joined RPGinfinity the day before my 15th birthday because of RPG Maker, and I didn't really know much about RPG's. It felt like years but I guess it was only a few weeks later I had heard about how bad Gaming World was and wanted to check it out.

That was four years and two months ago. I think mostly, I've learned a lot about what kind of person I am inside. I was, and am, really great and nice in person, but something about gw has always made me curse furiously and call everyone faggots. I guess that gets built up from who I am off of the internet, so it helps me a lot, really.

I've also learned a lot of really arbitrary things, here.

I stayed mostly because I feel like I fit in. Because everyone here is so angry.

A little over five years.

Uh, what did I learn? I guess I matured a lot, since this was one of the first actual forums I went to. I found GW before then, and I enjoyed reading the tutorials (ATARI's) and articles (someone with an A... I dunno, not ATARI though) and looking through the games. Afterwards I just decided to join the forum. I made some stupid posts and then came back a little later, and just started having fun I guess. I'm definitely more mature online, and I've learned a lot of great tips (don't swallow tinfoil) and stuff.

I've stayed because of the community, mostly. I still have RPG Maker on my desktop, and every couple months or so I go on some game making rampage and try to make a chipset and download and name two thousand monsters before I decide to stop, but other than that I really don't use it much anymore. I have a lot of fun, and it's a great place to discuss things like games and movies and topics in general with the anonymity. There are definitely great people here, although there are plenty of retards too.

I remember my friend randomly had rpgmaker on computer and as I thought FF7 was a masterpiece I joined this forum when I was about 14 looking to steal some resources for my BRILLIANT EPIC RPG.
I also only posted in polls because just making a comment like "yes" or "no" was the fastest way to increase your post count, I think one of the first comments I made on gw was strongly defending ff7 and wondering why everyone had such issues with it, someone later commented that it sounded as if I was defending the Africians against racism because I was defending it so strongly.

I think the first person to ever talk to me was Bondo or that guy with the avatar which had two masks his name was Silverdrramma or something.
Also I thought the general forum would be waaay too much reading just to get post +1, also I enjoyed roleplaying and I went through a phase of liking anime hahaha! (now I KINDA HATE IT)

Overall gw has given me some insight into better humour and also has gotten me into music. I like hangin' out here its fun and there are some cool people.

I FOUND GamingW back in 2001 when I was dabbling with RM2K for the first time. The resources, articles, reviews and previews were an awesome asset to get a feel as to what the community liked and disliked. After some time I realized it also had a forum and started lurking about. I never joined during that period as I felt too "small time" and wasn't ready for the big league sites like GamingW. After RM2K3 came out, I decided to sign up but nothing ever came of it.

Getting a breath of nostalgia, I started working with RM2K3 again and I finally decided it was time to start posting at the place which embodied the RPGMaker community to me, GamingW.

PS: The reason I kept coming back were the wacky regulars who I saw progress over the years of my lurkerdom.

I joined here a bit over 5 years ago, but back then I had lurked about the IRC channel for a long while.
Now, I remember my first post was something about FF9 being cool or something.

I also used RPG Maker a lot back then, I wrote a few tutorials and even helped a little bit on the rm2k3 translation... But I ceased using the makers a few years ago now.

I joined in mid-2003, I can't remember for what particular reason I joined. I think I lurked for a while before that without registering
I think I came across it from the affiliates list on Dark Dominion (Another rpg maker site that was pretty cool back when it still existed) Also I was a member of don's forums, but I got sick of that place eventually

I don't think I became overly active here until the downfall of that place, when I had nowhere else to go. So, by that timeline I probably wasn't much into RPG Maker 2000/2003 by the time I got here, but I really don't even remember anymore.
I also don't remember why I decided to stay here either, but now GW is someone a part of my life, even though I do not post too often

I joined after learning that UPRC (making of Blackmoon Prophecy) was here.

I stayed cause I found #capcom.

So anyone from #capcom is my main squeezes here but I like a lot of other members since I hate being that guy who only stays in one spot, so I branch out a lot and try to at least casually browse every forum. I have 0 categories closed atm, but I usually close the RPG Maker listing one since those forums are like, ATARI posting 1 image + lock forums.

I have too many favorite members outside of #capcom to list them all but a couple of the people who keep me coming back (and who I'd keep coming back for even if #capcom randomly died all of a sudden) are mamamack, VB, Dada, Psyburn, and Roman.

Originally, I was a member at Sky Tower Games and avoided this place cause I heard you guys were all jerks.

Then Sky Tower pretty much died and I ended up migrating over here after all. You guys aren't all that bad  :)

I think I've only really been active here 2-3 years. Course a lot of you guys probably will have no idea who I am since I barely post outside of G&D.

Let's see.. I've learnt to ignore a lot of things (such as people being wrong on the internet  :shh:) and.. yeah.

Staying cause I'm making an EPIC rpg and it's gonna be cool  :woop:

(Plus I've somehow made a habit of making gw the first place I visit everytime I open firefox)

Ive arrived here after finding out about rpgmaker2000. First I just looked for tutorials and resources because my English was horrible. Then I slowly started posting. I learned all of my English here pretty much. Then I found out about game maker and worked on Sluggy's adventure, which is what got me into pixel art in the first place.
I finished Sluggy's adventure and then I started more and more games, and never finished any. Now today I just do pixel art and animation, and hang out here for the community and for the prospect of maybe someday finishing some other game and show it off.

I don't quite remember when I joined...either 2001 or 2002, I know it was during the summer of my tenth grade year anyway. (I suppose it's 2002 now that I look at my "JOIN DATE" haha)  The reason I came to GW was because I was interested in using gamemaking programs.  The first one I came across was that Hamster Republic one (if anyone knows what I'm talking about) and I eventually came across a site that had this DBZ game done in RPGMaker 95.  I played around with RM95 for a time before a google search lead me on to this thing called RPG Maker 2000 and the first site that came up in my seach that caught my interest was Gaming World.  I browsed for a bit before joining but once I did I met quite a few people who helped me out in getting started on my projects.  RPGoddess back when she had her own project (Tales of Muiragi: Side Story) Legacy001 (don't recall what project he was doing but I think it was prior to Naufragar or at least an early version of it) Rusty (his Secret of Mana ABS system was the bees knees and was my guide in learning the ins and outs of RM2k) Bloodrose (who contacted often, along with Legacy and Rusty about how to do certain things because their projects seemed so advanced at the time) and I'm pretty sure I had help from the likes of Dragonslayer, Moriason and Phatradeph.

But yeah, the main reason I came to GW was for gamemaking purposes, but I eventually found myself staying for other reasons.  In time I came to know quite a lot of people I considered friends like Jumar, Afura, Erave, Tenchu, Fire Mage, Mencius... way too many to keep on naming really.  Actually, the whole "Jawesome" thing I picked up I actually picked up from Senior Behemoth before he up and disappeared for some time a few years back;  he was a damn cool guy back in the day...likely still is though I haven't seen him years.  I still remember the whole music circle fad with the rap circle, the metal circle, the REAL metal circle and whatnot, the Pokemon Card and Plushies fad that was going on, the growth of Erave's community based game, the start of the GW Awards and loads of other stuff.  Oh and who could forget Lith's "Jizzy Riblets" prank call? :D :D :D In time the place sort of became more of a second home than just a message board community.  I don't come around as often anymore or rather as much as I'd like mainly because I've moved on out of RM2k mainly as a result of time constraints, otherwise I'd love to get back into it... and despite some bumps along the way and spats with a few other members for the most part I still consider this my "home" as far as message boards are concerned.  It was the first online community where I felt like a permanent member and wanted to keep it that way so I'll likely continue to pop in so long as GW is still around.

With that said, now that I think about it I've been attached to this place for nearly a decade.  Scary...then again, maybe not? :P

I came in my 7th grade, I was probly about 12, maybe 2000. I found rm2k, and wanted to use Blueleaf's rpgmaker-canon dbz sprites for a game, and eventually found my way here by way of Kezay's DBZ platform game.

I've been here on and off through since then, I got this new account apparently in 2002, and then changed my name maybe a year or two ago. I don't really remember any members from GW longer than the past year, other than Kezay obviously, and then DeathJester for banning me every time.
I can honestly say 2008 GW is much more friendly than any other period of time I've been here.

Oh yes, I learned to say "fag" in real life.

Post by: Kaworu on April 07, 2008, 09:44:10 am
Joined back in 2002 for rpgmaker reasons, I was a pretty bad noob but quickly realised rpgmaker is gay and it's better to just hang around and chat. It was fun learning new shit, talking about whatever and whatnot. I still had an interest in game making (moved onto gamemaker and modding games and shit) but GW's never really supported that kinda stuff in full, and everywhere else was strangeland, so I just stuck here. Plus it was a useful place to vent shit out that I couldn't in real life, so the Kaworu character was born, and shit seemed all right. It was totally the community, like nowhere else could have a Superman vs Goku arguement and actually take it seriously and discuss about powers and shit. That was like the best topic in 2006, it was totally ridiculous. GW's community was great in that way, if someone was an idiot, we'd laugh them into submission and then they'd get embarassed and shit and that's it, things went no further. There was drama at times, but it was always gone within a few days or not treated totally seriously.

In 2006 GW started getting really bad. I think everyone had a dog biting their knackers that year, and I was gunna leave. I'd amassed a group of friends and was rarely posting, but when thing didn't go as planned I was back here with a vengeance (against jews for some reason). 2007 Was actually pretty cool at first. Nobody seemed to really care and it was again just hangback and chat. Later on there were hints that it was turning bad, but those could be ignored, I admit that I got caught up in it as well, and I was a douche last year. It was cool, but I ended up leaving for about quater of the year (was gunna be forever). And I dunno, I've come back and this just isn't GW. The gamemaking aspect keeps shrinking down (I'd most likely be back in the gamemaking crowd if it was a little more seriously and hadn't essentially descended into rpgmaker or bust!) and the community has become so enclosed and warpped that it's just not been fun. Which is a shame as there's some cool people here, but it's too angry and arguement focused, for no reason. Pranking people have simply been replaced by calling them out, forum games are now forum flames.
I dunno now I think I'm here more out of the fact that very few places would allow what GW allows, than the community, I mean I think I've only made five/ten posts out of comics/anime and graphical art since I've come back which are somewhat sensible.

I first discovered, and immediately started posting on Gaming World in November of 2001.  I have no claim to fame, and my participation has been somewhat off and on (Ranging from obsessive, to non-existent.)  After the "crash" of 2003, I went away for a long time, partly because the community seemed broken, and part because it got so huge, that it just wasn't a fun place to be anymore.  I came back because I think there may be a revival of the community, and I would like to be a part of it.

I first browsed the forums during my high school graphic design class, mainly.  My friend and I (Username of Samurai_Sword) really got active in the forums, though I took to the whole community a little better.  I don't think that Samurai_Sword has posted at all since about 2004ish or so, though he has a baby and other responsibilities.

When I first joined, I was a senior in high school.  I had aspirations of becoming a game designer, though not much else.  I graduated in 2002, and immediately went to college for a game design degree (Back when they were new and unheard of, and didn't have the reputation of being a lameass degree.)  I dropped out after one year (Go figure.) and started working. (With about 30000usd worth of student loan debt to pay off.  Yeesh.)

I've worked as a Kinko's (Later Fedex Kinko's) copy guy, a graphic designer for an ad newspaper, a Wal-Mart electronics guy, a bridge construction worker, and most recently, and Best Buy computer salesman.

I remember when Faust thought I was gay, simply because I lived in San Francisco. (The city I was going to college in.)  He was shocked to discover that I wasn't.

I recall creating some 3d battle backgrounds together with Samurai_Sword for someone's RPG Maker 2000 game.  I don't think his game ever went anywhere though.

I remember starting, and then stopping a number of projects, including a "life sim" rpg called Eclectica, a game featuring a character known as "Samurai Slash-em Man.", and an RPG Maker tribute to Megazeux called the Adventures of Zeux.  The final project was a joint effort between myself, Samurai Sword, and another friend who's GW name escapes me (His GW career was brief, but fun.)  That project was massive and ambitious, but faded into obscurity.  (I'm recently trying to sort of revive it, in spirit anyway, only solo.)  To this day, I have never released anything, though I have written a number of articles.

Today, I am married, and I have a son due August 1st.  His name is going to be Lucas.  That has nothing to do with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in any way, it's merely a coincidence.  I've already prepped to turn him into a gamer as soon as possible, of course.  (Oh, there will be photos.  Mark my word.)

Despite getting ready to have a son, I don't think that will cause me to leave Gaming World again.  I may post less frequently, but I don't intend on leaving.  I forsee late nights where I hold Lucas in my left arm, and type with my right.

Edit:
OH!  I totally remember Faust's old name.  Lord Gremlian!  And Bart was Fenix!  Wow, the past rushes back at you fast.

I first found out about gamingw back when I was 12 through a quick google of how to make games. I then found RM through GamingW. I then went on an 'heh look at my game though it sucks' phase, which most didn't notice. Reading back through my posts, I really was a lot more of an idiot than I am now, so I'm indebted to GW for that. Then I wrote some shitty HEH RIPOFF OF WALUIGI SOAP which got trolled(yeah I realise how dumb it was) to the extreme until I got into an INTERNET FIT(pretty much the only one I've had I think). Mid-2007, I was an idiot again on IRC. I am now still fighting for internet acceptance from the g&d community, but the rest either troll sometimes, or don't really care.

I left for a few months, but came back because of soldat, which is where I stayed during my leave. I would have probably left forever if it wasn't for FGT, and being told about qnet which is where I play until rare gwsoldat gathers.

Uhh, yeah.  That was Olidammara (Dungeons and Dragons God of Tricks and Thieves.)  And that was me.  I went through an identity crisis.  I thought that "Bondo" wasn't good enough, or something, so I tried to change it.  I guess I was just meant to be Bondo.

You weren't always Afura, were you?  Did you go by a different name back in the day?

Edit:
Avatar changed...  for old times sake.

You had a pretty cool avatar man, nah I always had this name. I made it cause I really liked the game Alundra and I saw a rapper called Afu-ra and I thought it was pretty close plus I was like 13 so I immediately though woah rapper that must be cool hahah. It's a pretty cheesy name but everybody knows me by it so I see no reason to change it.

These are my most memorable avatars so you might remember them, I knew nothing about the games I just stole them from gsarchives cause I had no idea how to upload stuff ha.

Do you think thats just because the main site is missing so the gamemaking aspect is less popular, also because we are less tolerant of new members?
Was it just todays events that made you think this way or do you have prior examples? Woah so many questions.

Also I remember I used to talk to Wash Cycle and Lilac alot on msn, I still talk to sb all the time.

I joined six years go in 2002, and like most people I came here looking for rm2k stuff. It didn't take too long for me to get pretty bored with the whole game making scene, so I lurked quite a bit in other forums before eventually becoming active across the site. During 2004 I had no internet access, so I was away from here for quite a while. I became active again in 2005, and I've just been browsing around here on a basically daily basis. I've been semi-active in this community, but I don't think I stand out all too much. I have met some good people through here, and I like knowing what goes on with the members here... Checking up on their livejournal entries, chatting on AIM, etc. I've also made some good e-friends here who have helped me out with some things like music production, such as Grin Tree.

GW is a cool place to hang out and it helps take the stress out of my day!

I started in the gaming community at RPG2knet (which doesn't seem to exist anymore).  That site was really strict, and I got warned for pretty dumb shit that I can't even remember.  I submitted a demo for a game there, and it was posted for a while, but last time I checked (while the site still existed), it was gone.

This was all around the time when Don Miguel's site still flourished.  I still remember the sad day when the site closed for good.

I came to GW over five years ago, and spent many hours in the IRC chat room.  I wrote articles for the site, and they made me staff for a few years.  Then the main site started to get buggy, and people stopped posting comments on articles, and pretty soon nobody was able to post anything.  I was relieved of my staff position, but I still had access to the main site editing thing.  For a while, I kept changing the poll so that there would be something new every few weeks, and occasionally I'd write a news thing about what was going on in the forums.  Then the editing thing stopped working, and a while later, the main site was taken down.

So for a long time, I didn't do much here.  I kept checking the boards and posting if I had anything relevant to say.  A few months ago, I started getting more active, and I went into the IRC to talk to some people.  I guess the only reason I'm still here is because I'm a premium member.  I never gave any money to the site, but I'm premium because all fired retired staff members got it.

What have I learned?  I've learned some basic game-making skills, and that GW is actually a pretty cool place if not many people know you.  Not to brag or anything, but I was pretty well-known back in the day, but a lot of people really, really hated me.  Now, since no one knows me, everyone's pretty nice to me.  I prefer it this way.

I joined a few days before my 15th, joined June 2005. My older brothers mate introduced me into a program I like to call.. Rpgmaker 2000. The first ever example of something made in the maker I saw was Legion Saga III, and instantly I looked into it, and upon looking I found Gaming World.

When I first joined I couldn't really spell that well, still cant now haha, but Ive gotten better. Anyways my main reason to join was to check out some Rpgs people have made themselves, and basically learn about the program, plus I had a lot of free time. Ive always enjoyed this place, never really had any arguments, warns, nothing and for some reason, every time I open firefox now GW is the first place I come to, the shit people post about is interesting sometimes, even comedic and that's what makes this place cool, relaxing in a way haha.

I've been here since July 4, 2003. I came here after getting tired of Game Maker (I was a member of the GM Community) & I wanted to get back into the RPG Maker scene. What have I learned? Well I've learned that masterbation is awesome (I was against it before I came here) & uh... yeah I learned alot of stuff about proper english too (not my first language, in fact when I first came here I had only been fluently speaking it for like a year or two). Why did I stay here? Well despite what people in some other forums have said about GW from my experiences here I've found this community to be one of the nicest I've been too. It's just that people here won't hesitate to tell you what they think of you & what you said, without any sugar coating & personally I like it when people are honest.

I've been on and off like crazy, leaving and coming back and leaving and coming back. Pretty much, I learned how not to be a faggot. I remember my first project...God, looking back on it I can see it was utter shit but back then it seemed awesome. Sometimes I wish I had the passion I used to for RPG Maker, but I sure as hell wouldn't trade in my maturity for it.

Frick. Been here a while. I was a longtime member of Developer Dimensions - Gormash's Cavern. I started RM2k Survivor: NYSE towards the end of DD's downfall, and then migrated with everyone else to RPG Infinity. I was there for a long time, and I think that's when I started frequenting GGZ, RPG2knet, and GW. Eventually RPGi died and I kinda stuck around here.

EDIT: Says I joined in August of 2002. Insanity.

EDIT2: Oh yeah, and what I have learned... Not much, honestly. Mostly just little social things, and how to deal with complete faggots.

I don't actually remember when exactly I joined GW. Before joining GW, I didn't care about posting on forums and I only used to visit GW's IRC. Oldest logs I know are from November 2001 so I probably joined around then or in fall 2001, I seriously don't know! I joined forums way later when I wanted to post about a new rm2k game I started.

When I joined GW, rami and I were already part of Avalanche Studios and the main reason I originally stayed was to talk about other RPG Maker games and show ours. Thinking back now, I think I did some really retarded things and my English was horrible as well. But even though I got kicked and banned from the IRC channel every now and then, I made some good friends pretty quickly, and Avalanche Studios became GW centered, and those were probably the main reason why I decided to stay here back then. GW has really given me a lot, and I don't really know where I should start. Obviously, staying here has improved my English, and I got into music thanks to GW. I used to listen to some horrible and bland metal but if it wasn't for GW, I wouldn't be nearly as interested in music and I doubt I'd like the same bands I do now or that my taste would be as varied. GW has also been a great source of news for me, reading and taking part in arguments has also educated me on many subjects. Basically, I think GW has helped me to grow in many ways, I have learned to be more critical (even though I'm not nearly as critical as some people here are) and I dunno, be a better person... at least on the internet. There's always something going on here and it never gets dull and even though some of that has stressed/annoyed the fuck out of me sometimes, being an admin, I love it here. I think I might enjoy GW more if I wasn't an admin because it would seriously take a load off my mind and I could focus on completely different things sometimes.

oh and gw got me into soldat.

Jesus Christ. I've been here for 6 years. Bart I want my life back.

All I've learned is that at GW, like everywhere else, it's who you know and who you blow.

Whenever you guys started, I was here.  I had been friends with Don Miguel during the RM95 translation days, he introduced me to RPG2KNET and at some point you guys started up and I joined over here.

Though my status says I joined in 2004, I must've joined under another name at an earlier point.  Can't remember what it was.

I've learned that I'm older than most of you guys.  Or at least it feels that way.

DS I thought being finnish got you into Soldat

Also yeah GW really helped me get into more music. I had really trashy taste before I got here. I end up finding a lot on my own but there's a pretty few pointers I got from here, getting me in the cool direction.

I think I first started using the site spring or summer 2001 for resources (I was 14 at the time). I joined the IRC first time on late 2001 (same day as DS to be more exact) to show off a CMS I had made in RM2k. That's how it all started. I didn't join on the forums until June 2002 because I didn't really care about posting on forums before that time.

GW has affected my life a lot when I think of it. Although I had done some novice web developing (HTML, some PHP3 and ASP) before joining GW, the desire to make sites like GW and later on the desire to make more impressive games is what made me learn programming. It's not an exaggeration to say that the job I have nowadays is largely due to GW. There's really a TON of stuff that GW has done for me. It has changed my taste of music as well as made me more tolerant and open minded as well as taught me a lot of things.

So yeah, the reason I hang out in here is obviously because I enjoy it, and I have a lot of friends here. There's been a few times I've really wanted to leave GW, especially after becoming an admin, and even especially during my last few months at army, but,as egoistic as it may sound, I think GW needs me so you won't get rid of me just yet. I know I might seem pretty serious a lot of time, especially when arguing on IRC and on feedback forum, I tend not to take the stuff here too seriously which is probably the reason why I've never left GW, not even temporarily like a lot of "old timers" have.

Well I officially joined in 2002, but I visited the main site a lot before then. My community at that time was rpg2knet, but sort of slowly started using gamingw more. I was a webmaster of a rm site called http://www.blade2k.net around that time aswell. I think it's still going.

The main reason I stayed, was becuase at the time I think was doing music for Eternal Saga, a game by Avalanche Studios, which was never completed :'(

Then there was DS' Twin Moons, but that one wasn't completed either :(

I think the main thing I have learnt from my time on the internet is how stupid people can sound online, but are probably alright guys in real life. Like I have matured online, but not really in real life...

It's also weird, becuase I've never really felt part of the inner circle of this community even though I log on every day. But I like that distance. I think if I got too involved in it all, I would probably make the innevitable leaving topic followed by the I'm back topic. So I like to keep a distance from that sort of drama.

What I like about Gamingw? I think it's a pretty informative way for getting information. Seriously. The amount of shit I've found out from this site is unreal. Sure, I could search for it off my own back, but often I'm not looking for anything in particular and I'll see a topic that catches my eye...

I forget how I first found this place, but I just looked for RM2K/3 tutorials and Game articles on the main site. Those were really helpful to me, I kept following it until the mainsite started dying. After completing Island Sky, I figured I'd join the forum and post it to see if people could give critiques and stuff on it. This is the first forum I joined, in 2005.

Eventually, because of this site I started doing pixel art for my games, and have learned a lot about making games, among other things. I'm really thankful that GW is here because of that. I stay because there's quite a few people here I like to talk to.

I joined in 2005 mostly because I visited here a lot to get really awful posts from the G&D section and then make fun of them from my cronies from other forums. I didn't actually have any posts until a year or so later (this all seems like a lot longer ago than 2006) when I realized that GW wasn't just a bunch of really awful members in the same vein as PKUltimaga.

After that it was mostly because I liked looking at screenshots of RM2k3 games and shit, and then in early 2007 I started posting outside of G&D. I have learned that it is a lot harder to be funny on the internet then in real life (like, actually funny)!

I basically joined to ask you how to make a CBS back in 2002. You told me to read some tutorials and from there I just kept posting. Mr. Y invited me to become content staff. I did that for a while before the FBI accused me of molesting several children and I stopped posting on GW for a few years. Now I guess I'm back full-time. I'm still here because I use RPG Maker 2003, but as soon as I finish my one and only RPG I'm moving on to better things (game programming in java :naughty:).

I seem to remember playing A Blurred Line all the way through in the Summer of 2005 then becoming RPG Maker obsessed. I think I joined in early 2006 to beg in Game and Demo for Lysander to complete his epic.

Well, I started in 2005, just browsing looking for ways to codes certain things in my game.  and I joined in 2006 so I could post...  an  advert/what do you think of my story topic, and got warned for bumping it twice.

I learned a bit of coding in RM2k3, but I also learned a lot more about game design in general, and developing story and other shit like that.   Hell, if I didn't come here I probably would've finished Demon Form by now, but it would be worse than...  well, I don't play many RM games so I don't know who makes crappy ones.

What keeps me here is the community.  More accurately the G&D forum, VG forum, and of course the SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY games of TF2...  that haven't been played for the last 3 or 4 weeks   :fogetcry:  Oh well.  Besides, I could probably just one day leave, and no one would know I'm gone...  just like in real life  :fogetemo:

I came here in early 2006 looking (like most people) for RM stuff. Me and my mate were playing around with the program and making a demo so I used to visit the mainsite a lot for tutorials and such. I occasionally looked at the forums, and I don't know why I joined (probably just a spur of the moment thing). I only really became active mid to late last year.

I stayed because I now compose (I used to do it but I was pretty bad) and there's some good projects in the works here, and I've met some cool people on here and such. Even if the site isn't as active as it used to be it's still good fun working with other people on here on songs and stuff (wattup lars). It's pretty much became my main forum hangout nowadays.

I have been here since forever, and I haven't learned anything, and that's precisely why I stay =)
seriously I joined many years ago, when rpgmaker.net died (I remember I had been recently promoted to mod of the art forum in there ;_;)
the I saw that many of the people I knew from there moved here, and I decided to register.
I have learned that I simply wouldn't be able to make a joke with GWhumour if my life depended on it, I learned that I'll never understand what targ means, and that I type too fast and that makes me always make typoes and I never make the time to correct them.
I've met quite a few amazing people around though, too bad many of them have already left the site...

Yeh, i have been around this town for a while, bout' a year. As long as I can remember, I am/was the target for the majority of angry members. I am always picked on, made fun of, and mocked. I grab the attention of those who think i am "Inferior" and then they get the chance to put me down just because i post somthing they cannot agree on, if i made a bad topic(accidentally), or for just the pure reasons to fufill the need to be big assholes. Why do I stay you ask, well why not? There are tons of nice people here such as Aten or PKUltimaga, and I really appreciate their kindness. Them and many others is what keeps me here and the fact that this is the most active forum I have ever been on. I understand that most of the people who i call "Mean" are sometimes the ones who just give me some harsh chritisism, but i never really liked that kind of chritisism. So as stated, that is what keeps me bonded to this forum. Thank you for your time, and have a nice day.

I've been here for a while. I originally joined rpgmaker.net a long time ago and stumbled upon Gaming World. (Which I, for some reason, am convinced was called Gaming Workshop for a short period of time since I remember there being a disclaimer at the bottom saying that "this page has nothing to do with Games Workshop") When rpgmaker.net went down I was all over the rpgmaker communities for a while before settling for GW. If it hadn't been for IRC I would probably never have stuck around. But IRC was the place to get all the information.

GW has taught me a lot about the internet. It's good to have been in for a while since that means I can be plain stupid and get away with it when I want to know what exactly that internet meme I heard about is. Over the years I've been here I've obviously changed a lot, but I don't know how much of that would have happened with or without GW.

Over the years though, most of my previous hangouts have all died out and this is basically the last forum community I'm in. I'm not sure I'm up to the task of getting as deeply involved in another so it's very possible that if GW dies it'll be the last specialized community I'm actively in.

I remember I started making games back in 2004, but I didn't even know about this site at the time.
I first came here 2005 after getting sick of the forums on another game making site I regularly visited (rmdownloads.com). After getting sick of the people there, I went looking for another site and found this one.

I learned a lot more from this site. Although I don't talk nearly as much on this forum, I read the Games & Design a lot, and the tutorials/articles section of the main site. My programming skills have advanced a lot since first coming - partly because of practice but also because of all the useful information.

Despite version 6 not being up yet, I find this place is still the most active and reliable place around, so I've decided to stick around.

I joined after visiting off and on for a few years.  I didn't register until I finally moved away from cow-moo's website after being a staffer there.  I came initially trying to be a staffer and post lots of tutorials on how to do various things -- a few people may remember I actually had tutorials explaining how to build platformers in Game Maker, which were probably some of the first GM-centered articles.  I think I did a few RPGMaker ones as well, and just misc. development for worlds and story-building.  I've built a few games and engines, never really finished anything.  I've learned a lot about how these communities work and the help I've received from various guys in the Programming forum has been infinitely valuable.  It's very...  humbling, I guess.  I have a degree in Computer Science here in the US, but there are younger people or people who haven't gone to a university who I can learn a LOT from.  But I suppose that may be my own arrogance too.  I dunno.  I've grown to respect a lot of people here too.  So many different people and different ideas.  We have some really talented people, and although I don't agree with everything, we have some interesting folks, and it does open a lot of ideas.

Anyway, that's way too mushy for me.  Let's not have another one of these topics for a while.

I have no idea.  I used to chat with Dr. Funk, though.  Man, I forgot about him.  There were so many GW-sagas, it feels like Dragonball or something.  Then there was Waluigi-Soap...  Man, that was like years ago.  I still remember Faust and a bunch of the other guys.  Man, that was years ago.  I don't remember half the people here anymore.  Just the people who've stayed.  I remember the hype about Rast's Dragon Destiny II -- and how disappointed everyone was when it got canned.  But that game had a LOT of interesting systems in it.

I actually remember being back on Don Miguel's site -- I won one of his contests to build Minesweeper.  That was pretty crazy, haha.

It's a bit hazy. It's also 4am and I'm not proofreading well at all.

Back in early 2000 one of my buddies from school showed me he found this AWEOSME program that could actually make final fantasy games, and we started playing about in rm2k for a few hours at his house. He told me he found the program on some site that I can't remember, maybe Katie's RPGMaker Page or something shit like that. I search for rpg maker in yahoo or something and stumbled upon the old geocities gaming world site (god it was bad). But it had rpgmaker so me being 12 and naive, I thought it must've been the one he meant.

I have absolutely no idea why I signed up on the forums, but I did, and pretty soon me, bart, cytwo, orange and froz were on 31 hours a day being goofy kids giggling about sex. Bart told me to join everyone on IRC and I fucked up and ended up going into #rpg_infinity instead of #rpgmaker, and thought that bipolar japanese chick Finn was Fenix(Bart), so didn't realise my mistake until the next day when bart was like 'WHY DIDNT YOU JOIN YOU WERE ONLINE DOUCHEBAGCUNTFACEHWORE'. Back then there -wasn't- any good rm2k games, let alone even thoughts of cms or cbs or anything like that. (hell custom GRAPHICS was a novelty), so we all toyed about and made really shitty rpgs and thought they were all absolutely incredible.

Gradually as the years have passed I slowly began to lose interest in making games myself, and just badgered everyone to make me appear in their games (leading roles in rpgmaker story 2 and hotmog..yessssss). I spent 2 years teaching RPG english, that was a laugh for sure. Basically the community has been the thing that's been keeping me here the whole time, especially as said before 'you can get away with more stuff here'. I don't need to lie every post and hug you and make you coffee. If I think your game is shit, I tell ya chump.

I took a couple of years out due to personal reasons + taking everything online too seriously and taking jokes as insults (and compliments as insults) and I think it's done me wonders tbh. I'm back here...because I'm bored. Occassionally popped in every 4-5 months to say hi to DarkPriest/Faust/Bart, but that was about it really. Around january 2007 I rejoined proper, and almost immediately went to a britmeat and met lars. Meeting 'real people' behind the community changed everything, because suddenly it wasn't a bunch of bastard-coated bastards with bastard fillings on here, it was me buddies. I've basically stayed it proper since '07, and I've only just recently started to bother posting on the forums (my post count says it all. 666 of those posts are fake that were set when I left..so I've basically got 750 posts in 7 years). IRC has always been the thing I've cared about here.

What have I learned?
FelixFenix is a cooler name than bart. CyTWO was the best member here. RPGMaker games used to be shit, but we accepted it back then. Now they are still shit. DeePee doesn't make good music anymore. Brits are extremely hostile and racist on IRC. Europeans are too good at soldat. Canadians are too good at WC3. Admins don't listen to people or update the site. Steel IS our god.

On a more serious note, I guess GW would be where I've kinda learned a lot of [cliche]'lessons of life'[/cliche]. Taking everything as it comes, being laid back and not getting worked up over people like Nightblade on the internet has made life so much less stressful and more enjoyable. Anything I've been unsure about in real life there's 5000 people on here that have experienced it too, and 6 will give me good advice about the situation. Hell I've even learned ggg..gg..ggg.gggigg.ggigirllsrsls.r from GW and how to deal with relationships =P

I never did find Katie's RM Page :(

This about right, considering we more or less took the same route (Hehe...Linkmaster SAB).  The only differences with me are that I posted on Don's board for a short amount of time before being banned (this was after discovering RM95 in 8th grade many moons ago) and the frustration from RPG Maker 2003 just led to quitting altogether, as opposed to moving on to Sphere.

i've been here for a while.  i joined for CHARSETS or some shit but i stuck around because idk, i liked the idea of posting as a member of a community at first, plus people talked about stuff that i found interesting at the time and didn't really have any other outlet for.  i wasn't especially internet savvy and this was the first forum i'd ever bothered to join, so a lot of things seemed interesting! another big part was that i was just planning on killing time until gw came back up (it went down in prep for gw5 a few days after i joined).  i stayed even after the site came back up because it didn't take very long to get involved in the community on more than just a superficial level and really start caring about it.  i connected with people here, or felt like i could, and that was the main reason i stayed.

i've learned a lot of stuff, but nothing i really feel like going into.  some of the people i've met here have had a pretty big impact on my development over the past few years, though.
