Title: Request your vehicle history reports.
Post by: Stadsport on April 07, 2008, 04:48:56 am
I went ahead and bought an unlimited carfax thing for a month.
Post your vehicle's VIN and your email address and I'll run your car for free.

This is nice of you but...... I don't think most people are willing to give their VIN away to the public. If I recall correctly, the VIN is pretty much the only thing someone needs to get a duplicate key from the dealer.

Posting your VIN isn't really anything bad. No one can really do shit with it.

Look on eBay and see the cars on sale. Most show off their VIN number (So people can look up the report)

Yeah, it's only an issue locally.
Ironically, a lot of dealers/manufacturers put their VIN right on the dashboard, making it easy for people to get the VIN and have a key cut of it. Put some tape over it or something.

i think it might be illegal to offer the carfax service to anyone though.

It's against the terms of service to offer your unlimited account to everyone, but most car communities have 'that guy' who does it anyway.

I'm just about to sell my car. Porsche 944. VIN: WP0AA0947GN454914.

Send results to [email protected]. I don't want any surprises with potential sellers.

Thanks.

EDIT:

If I recall correctly, the VIN is pretty much the only thing someone needs to get a duplicate key from the dealer.

This was true a long time ago with certain luxury cars when laser cut keys first came out, but now you have to show some other form of ownership.
