So what does everyone think about all the protests surrounding the Olympics and the torch-bearing ceremony thing.
Here is a video of Konnie Huq the ex Blue Peter presenter getting mad trampled by pro-Tibet protestors.
Here is a video of someone trying to put the torch out with a fire extinguisher and then telling the camera about it.
The best part about that video is that it was posted by someone called huaqing who had this to say:
[blockquote]Stupid supporters of the Dalai clique! Shameless! No integrity! No brain to think is it? Hahaha......kena arrested by policeman! Bloody super naive lor! What an idiot man! Good to see this incident showing the world how f***ing idiotic those pro-Dalai activists are![/blockquote]
So yeah, funny shit in the streets of London but there is some serious business behind it, discuss that here (I actually know very little about it which is why this thread is made of youtube vids). Do you think politics should stay out of sport or that sport should stay out of china? gimme all you opinions.

the shit is going to hit the fan when it goes to san francisco in a little bit and it will be awesome yeaahhhh ownt

yeah I was watching those dudes scale the golden gate bridge to put up posters - that was badass. when is it getting there?
I don't know too much about this too beyond the very basics so I guess I should go read a FREE TIBET wikipedia or somethingg

i'm glad people are protesting. it's finally bringing some of these important issues to the headlines!
-
I think the sportsmen should attend the Olympics but skip the opening ceremony and the like to show China that we don't think what they're doing is okay.
-
The most annoying part is that people will still watch the games because they have the nerve to think of the Olympics as a sporting event and not as a diplomatic gesture.

China probably thinks hosting the Olympics will show it's a strong country, encouraging support for it and it's general nice nature, and most likely assumed it could use the WOW factor of hosting the olympics to sweep certain undesirable elements out of international eyes. This hasn't been done before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936_Summer_Olympics). Likewise the use of the olympics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American-led_boycott_of_the_1980_Summer_Olympics) for a political and social (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet-led_boycott_of_the_1984_Summer_Olympics) platform is a totally new idea. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_Olympics_Black_Power_Salute)
-
yeah kaworu, I was thinking the same thing. even more because of how china has always viewed itself as a country.
given this I doubt the protests will achieve much, but gl to them anyway. at least it's raising a lot of awareness! I had no idea that half my family didn't know about this terrible shit with china.
-
I think we should boycott it entirely, except for our athletes of course. I really like how the attention is following the torch, even though a few of the protests got out of hand, its definitely getting publicity. Heres to the chinese protesters giving it one hell of a run when it returns to china in may. Just hope it doesn't get TOO out of hand.
-
Just got back from SF. Me and a friend wanted to see the torch roll through, but unfortunately there were too many protesting faggots, so they changed the route(for security reasons). Originally it was suppose to go through Pier 39 at some point, and it was going to be the first year to see the torch relay. Pretty disappointing dude. The supporters and protesters were remotely civil compared to the other places though.
-
Man, I really want someone to put the torch out. That shit would be awesome to see. Apparently according to a lot of peole it was put out in Paris by some protestor, but obviously they are denying it and there is no video evidence, so....
seriously I fucking hate China at the moment. I also hate Gordon Brown for turning a blind eye to it all. I know this is an awful comparison, but this iss just like when Nazi Germany were persecuting the Jews and no one did anything for many years. Infact, the Olympic games were hosted in Germany around then too
-
Obama calls for Beijing boycott (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7339943.stm) if they don't improve their human rights record and help out in the Sudan. Actually, Clinton did too, though it's only a short paragraph in the article.
-
Obama is a legend for doing this

They're not denying it. It's already been stated that the torch was put out five times in Paris for security reasons. It's not a big deal. They have thousands of flames burning throughout the world, and they had one on the bus in Paris that was used to transport the runners during the bad legs of the relay.
-
yeah, but they are denying that a protestor managed to put the flame out due to bad security. They put the torch out to get on the bus, but they kept the flame lit by other means. Then they lit the torch from that flame, so technically the flame itself never went out.
-
yeah fuck the olympic charter and everything the olympics stands for lets protest
Sounds like certain protesters have forgotten the point of the Olympics!
-
not sure if that is sarcasam or not, but the Olympic games stands for peace and global unity. So a country, which is far from keeping peace globally, hosts the Olympic games? Can you spell Irony? Not only that, but pretty much every country that the torch has come into contact has protested against this. So Global unity is out of the window aswell.
I'm all for athletes achieving their goals and records, but some things can't be forgotten and smothered. Everyone needs to know that the country hosting the Olympics is currently breaching human rights.

even so, don't you think that tibet should be allowed autonomy? just because they are BAD doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to exist as a nation! (similar to IRAQ UNDER HUSSEIN)
-
My opposition to the Iraq War wasn't a question of autonomy or not. I just oppose rich assholes sending workers to slit the throats of each other.
"In the name of a greater civilization, we curse those who for the sake of their ambitious dreams, brought about the massacre of so many young lives. No matter how brutal the crime, you will always get glorification of its heroism and tradition from the eunuchs of bourgeois culture." - Amadeo Bordiga

Yeah, this is pretty much the point I'm making. Also:
So a country, which is far from keeping peace globally, hosts the Olympic games?
Political agenda is also supposed to go out the window for the Olympic Games!
-
is it? because this isn't the first time controversy has happened in it's short like 200(?) year lifespan (of the current version we all know) it's hardely been problem and politics free (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_games#Olympic_problems). Seriously the olympics are very much about politics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_games#Criticism), and it's naive to think they're all about goodsportsmanship and whatnot.
The protestors are not the only people (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer_Olympics#Olympic_lawmaking) using this years games for political or other means (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer_Olympics#Environmental_and_health_issues).
-
Yeah, you keep linking to these plentiful incidents, but these are all incongruous with the spirit of the games too!

uh, the point is the SPIRIT OF THE GAMES (at least for the majority of modern history) has been all about politics and pretty much an international penis length contest

the torch is over here today friday
