Title: Thrice
Post by: Lyndon on April 14, 2008, 11:47:49 pm
Thrice used to be an emo/post-hardcore/whatever band. Their new stuff is actually quite different though.

They have basically been writing an album split into four volumes consisting of water, fire, earth and air. Each ep has a different sound. Fire, is raunchy, raw hardcore stuff. Water has very watery sounds and beats. Air has very breathy vocals etc. Earth is all recorded with acoustic instruments and feels very 'earthy'.

They all have their merit, but you should seriously check out the Earth ep. I don't really like their other stuff that much, but that ep is really great.

scroll down and listen to 'dig my own grave' and 'The lion and the wolf'. They are probably my favourite. You can usually tell which songs belong to which volumes based on their song titles. There is usually a reference to the element they are refering to in the song title.

I like the recording style on Earth aswell. It's got a very live vibe to it. For instance you can hear chairs creeking in some of the songs etc.

man, I've never liked Thrice that much but I gotta say they are TRYING SHIT as opposed to everyone else in their little genre.

Yeah, I've actually been thinking they were much better than similar bands for a long time, now.  Illusion of Safety and Artist in the Ambulance were terrible/generic albums, so I'd kind of written them off, and then I heard Vheissu.  Don't get me wrong, Vheissu is still a pretty bad album, but there was clearly a significant amount of ambition, and that's about when I realized that they must have an appreciation for how tired their schtick was, and were trying to be something better.  That alone made me think of them in a much more lenient light than other post-hardcore acts.

Vheissu was the last time I checked in on them, though.  It was ambitious but it was still their awful vocalist just screaming a lot of the time, so I'm honestly surprised they've managed to come so far in a couple of years.  This new stuff is surprisingly OKAY most of the time!  I wouldn't listen to most of it of my own volition at all, but it's really admirable that firstly, they even showed such ambition to begin with, and secondly, that they actually followed through with it and managed to go from being a commercially successful gay emo band to... something else.  Something weirder and definitely less accessible/marketable.  I really can't help but have a pretty decent amount of respect for them.

Firebreather is kind of gay, but still surprising.

There was a thread on these guys in another forum I visit, and half of the post were praising this band for trying something different, and the other half were people saying that old thrice was better and how they should have never changed their stuff. I have Vheissu and the only song I listen to is Atlantic. I don't know why but that song just chills me out. Other than that I'm not really into this band. I thought they made a good move in taking a different direction and trying to do something different, its just not my thing. But then again, I listen to some pretty generic stuff, so I'm not really in a position to say anything.

I like the idea of what they're doing, but for the most part the music itself seems to be just 'generic weepy indie', like that stuff they always play in the backround when people die on medical shows... Still, some of their songs reminded me a bit of PJ Harvey's last album, and at least it's more interesting than just another thrashy emo band.
It'll be interesting to see what their next album will be like... Whether it'll get more generic-indieish, or more rootsy, or what.

Vheissu came out a few years ago, they have a new album out now.
