Title: Movie Making
Post by: Shepperd on April 22, 2008, 10:01:46 pm
I really dunno where this should go.. here, film forum or happy zoo even.

Does any know of some good software that is an alternative to the Microsoft default Movie Maker?
If there's some I could get thru Happy Zoo, let me know!

Thanks in advance

People will most likely suggest Adobe Premiere but it blows. If you only need basic functionality you could always use Camtasia.

If you are willing to spend money... I find that Avid Xpress is great.

I personally use Sony Vegas. Very nice easy to use interface with a shitload of features.

Camtasia blows also. If you just want basic video editing, CUT HERE, PASTE THERE then Camtasia will probably work for you but if you want a reputable INDUSTRY STANDARD kind of thing then go for Premiere because it has way way way more features than Camtasia.

Sony Vegas blows for a very simple reason... Everything is realtime. Meaning that if you are applying an effect and don't know EXACTLY what paremeters you want from the start, it will process the effect each time you move a parameter, so you can't even cancel something...

In the end, this means you cannot preview any effect or anything without actually applying it. (And then having to press undo a thousand times)

(Question) At school we're using Final Cut Pro.  Are any of these programs similar and how would you compare them to Final Cut.  Please disregard cost and the whole Mac thing, I'm just talking about the actual ease-of-use, functions, etc...

Ugh... I haven't really used Final Cut Pro but I've heard it's pretty good too. I wouldn't know how to answer for sure, I know I once used Avid to make an AMV and it was pretty cool for editting and shit, plus having some decent effects.

Sorry, I don't think I could compare it to Final Cut really... All I can say is that Sony Vegas sucks.

Get something that will help you with dynamic font creation. Flash is great coupled with a couple other good ones like Vegas.

If you get Adobe Premiere, it's mostly for really hardcore video editing. It can make a computer like mine (1.3Ghz with 512mb ram) chug like hell.

Get the one that has Dynamic Font Creation for your videos, as well as coming with good professional Graphic Design creation tools. I used my friends copy of Premiere and found it to be extremely slow, and it's exporting system to be kind of akward (set size only? I never got into that....)

Anything Macintosh is probably the best. The software engineers that create the programs like Garage Band and Final Cut Pro are usually programming it to be super-fast even on a lower end computers.

I'd go with Avid or Ulead for now. Try out the demos and see which is not bulky and sluggish. Try to avoid any like Premiere that will horde your system unless you really want 'the standard' and will be using heavy green screen editing or some other effects like that.

I been using Adobe Premier for a few years now on and off to make small ads/clips for work. Overtime, you learn more neat tricks with it and get better. You need a damn fine computer to run it, but it's very powerful land I find the interface to be much more intuitive then others.

You can see all the videos I made using it here: http://youtube.com/profile_videos?user=bgniado

This is my latest one, and in Adobe it's honestly not that hard. Even the affects I did are only a few clicks to do

Hey man, I hope you don't take offense to me saying this, but being so vocal about something you don't like doesn't exactly make you seem like an expert. It would also help if you'd actually give some kind of reason for your dislike. I wanted to say this to you a while ago when you said that Linux is terrible because it has a "strange directory structure", but couldn't be bothered to do it then.

Adobe Premiere is one of the leading programs for this sort of work. There's also Adobe After Effects, which mainly functions as a program for post-production, but also allows you to do basic editing (and a bunch of other things which I'm personally not very familiar with). If you want to use something simple, try Adobe Premiere Elements, which is a scaled-down version of Premiere aimed at amateurs that don't need Premiere's full capabilities. If you use Mac OS X, you could also try Final Cut Pro (http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/), one of Adobe's most important competitors.

hahaha Bart if only adobe premiere could fix acting!

I was trying to take a film class for next semester but it didn't work out, but I found out that the school universally uses Final Cut Pro. I don't know if that's because we suck apple's dick everywhere (all the professors have macs) but if the department uses it, it must be good!

Final Cut Pro is really good I think. Macintosh software is built to be powerful, yet very light/memory effecient (although garageband was pretty slow on my friends mac ;/).

Adobe is very heavy, but might be the best choice if you've got a Dual Core or better since it is the standard...
