watershed?? it should be called mikes gay attempt at classic rock
discuss
-
Well DS streamed 2 of their new songs for me and they sounded pretty heavy dude.
-
well ghastly_darklord listened to the whole album and it has lots of soaring vocals and oboes and bard shit
edit: its sweet but i want more GRAAATGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG ominous bloodvomit
-
oh shit the motherf*cker leaked
Listening now.
I really liked both The Lotus Eater and Porcelain Heart. I read that only two songs on the whole album have growling and even though it can get pretty heavy, there are only a few really intense moments. The Lotus Eater especially was really awesome.
Coil was great, I'll post opinions when I have heard the whole thing a few times.
-
also what about the new ulver btw
-
I've heard Lotus Eater and Porcelain Heart (edit) so far. Lotus Eater is seriously awesome, I love the circus interlude. Porcelain Heart was pretty nice, I bet the full version will be great.
I'm going to download this and check it out tomorrow, I'll post more thoughts then.

I'd say The Lotus Eater is probably the second most heavy track on the album, Heir Apparent being the heaviest. Porcelain Heart, Hessian Peel, Hex Omega have heavy moments too but overall, Watershed is definitely not that heavy compared to most of Opeth's work.
I have listened to this a few times now and I think it's great. I have always prefered Opeth's clean vocals and while total absence of the growling would suck, I think Opeth have managed to balance the two pretty well here. I'd say this is Opeth's least metal album since Damnation and I have a feeling that those who like the heavier Opeth might be disappointed in Watershed as there's a lot of mellow parts and it rarely gets really heavy. I also doubt that Opeth are trying to appeal to the Damnation crowd since I think the album is still a bit too heavy for the people who could only get to Damnation, and the heavy songs tend to be less accessible than on Ghost Reveries, except for Porcelain Heart. I also get this feeling that this album is just... I dunno, more prog than before? There are a fair amount of abrupt changes, unexpected parts plus some weird outros.
It's great for me though, since as I said, I love the clean vocals and there's plenty of them here, and there's also enough growling. I don't think Opeth are being that adventurous here but it's unique enough to feel new and refreshing, plus I like the addition of the aforementioned bard shit, and the female vocals on Coil are great. It's too early to tell how this fares against other Opeth albums but at the moment I am loving it. All the songs are great.

Wow I am excited to hear this
also new ulver what
-
I don't think there's new Ulver, I have no idea what Afura is talking about!
-
Damnation was my favorite opeth album by far, so i'll check this out!
-
upon further listening, this album isn't really good. it's such typical metal now- they sound like a third rate metal band trying to be "progressive" instead of some band that just loved morbid angel and acoustic guitars.
kitsch is what i'd describe the album as
it's good to listen to but it tries waaaay to hard. unfortunate
-
yeah, it seems to me that they just OVERDID absolutely everything
this is probably my least favorite album from them
-
i stopped caring about opeth and also metal and prog rock for the most part a long time ago but I still really like damnation. I havent heard this album or their last one. Also peter and their drummer (martin lopez i think???) were the coolest guys ever and they had the right idea to leave
-
It's a big change. Very new but still unmistakably Opeth.
It does sound a bit...i dunno. I wouldn't say forced but like...they sound a bit more like a band influenced by Opeth than like Opeth now (something like that).
That in mind, i do like those two leaked tracks. I suspect they're growers.
I'd like to think that this is a getting settled album and the next one will be like this, but perfected.
EDIT: Listening to some more of the tracks. Heir Apparent is brutal as fuck. if Porcelain Heart was Ghost Reveries then this is Blackwater Park.
EDIT 2: And Coil is Damnation. And is brilliant (and sounds like Soldier of Fortune).

I dont like the drdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrd
there is too much of just boring fucking stupid metal on this cd
-
Man I have to bump this. I dont know where I got new ulver from but I think it was pretty late when I posted that so w/e.
I don't know what everyone is talking about this album being gay, its pretty awesome in my opinion and I hear wash cycle talking about STUPID metal but I cant hear it, heavy tracks like Heir Apparent are very awesome and the cd is pretty well done in terms of theme. I think the new members fit incredibly well, I've got the special edition and the artwork/the code inside is all awesome. Lyricially I like it alot as well, I'd say the only parts where I was kinda like wtf was the very first track that "running through the fields of sorrow" line sounds so cliche I almost thought I was hearing Lacuna Coil. Also The Lotus Eater is okish.
9/10 for me. Bard shit is cool and I can see myself listening to this for weeks to come.
-
Man, The Lotus Eater is probably the best track on the album. :(
And I'd say this is among Opeth's best albums, Blackwater Park takes the cake but I think I like it more than Ghost Reveries, Still Life or Damnation.
-
Everyone loves blackwater park man, I really like Lotus Eater and it reminds me a bit of arcturus but that song is a little cheesy in some parts.
Do you know about the running theme and how is says the line about satan backwards?
-
after like 3 or 4 listens I do like this album a lot
but I hate the like little 4 bar verses where its just double bass and chugging guitar. that is where its at its most apparent that the new members are no replacement for the old
-
yeah this album is pretty great overall (although admittedly I have not given it the time that I should to have listened through it properly) but there a some times on the album where you can just really feel the loss of the some of the things that were brought to the table by previous members (most notably Martin's drumming)
-
I've only heard like two songs so far (I need to download the album) it was good but there just wasn't anything that was "WOW AWESOME I WANT TO LISTEN TO THIS 3463 times!!!!!". Also, the fact that Martin Lopez isn't the drummer anymore bugs me a lot. Martin Axenrot is really good, but I just think that Lopez was the backbone of Opeth, he just had this really awesome groove that metal drummers don't normally have.
I'll give a more detailed opinion once I listened to the full album. But I sadly, really lost interest in Opeth even though I love quite a few of their albums.
Btw, Ulver released a new album in 2007 if I remember correctly. It was basically electronic ambient if I recall properly.
