Title: new coldplay single - "violet hill"
Post by: post on April 30, 2008, 04:59:52 am
its a free download off of their site

so, ill be the first to say im a little disappointed. they boasted how this was going into a new direction and i feel like its the same thing over again. the lyrics are incredibly weak, the guitar sounds horrible in the song, the layered vocals are kind of stupid.  it reminds me of a maroon five song.  im still looking forward to the album, there is bound to be one or two jems. though i dont think this is the masterpiece everyone has been hoping for - nothing new, radio friendly, market pleaser.

Nobody REALLY likes them, but they usually have a couple of alright songs to pass the time.

I'm actually a pretty big coldplay fan. This new song is not bad and is probably something that will grow on me. I'm not keen on the sound of the vocals though. It sounds like they were recorded in a bathroom...

i am listening as i type.

First off, I like Cold Play.  I think they have a few really cool songs-- IE a rush of blood to the head, god put a smile on your face, clocks, yellow, idk what else off the top.
And nah, this sounds fairly different than other cold play, actually.  I wouldn't call it an ENTIRELY NEW direction but it is definitely different than their older material.

Also, weak lyrics?

I don't know if I'd call them deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep etc, but definitely not weak per se.

Overall verdict is that its a decent song and definitely holds up to the singers claim that it is a new direction for the band.

Lyndon I agree with you. :-)

I also agree with Couch whole-heartedly. Maybe the lryics aren't the DEEPEST of all time, but music these days (Alternative Rock especially) is extremely shallow; mostly about how much they hate the world; Alternative Rock/Rap is probably just as bad as Country music in 2008 so far.

So comparitively speaking, I agree with Couch completly. Coldplay creates more melodic, beautiful music. It takes a heart or a musician/composers ear to really enjoy a lot of the stuff they have created over the past 5 years.

Most people here, though, take note hate Coldplay. So I will be probably the third and last person to actually write something positive within this topic.

It doesn't sound all that similar to other Coldplay songs in my opinion. I mean it's not completely new direction but it's definitely at least somewhat fresh. The end is more typical Coldplay though.

And even though I haven't listened to them in a while, I also like Coldplay and I have been waiting for their new album. They aren't fantastic or anything but they make good melodic music.

I like it. I think it sounds at least a little bit unlike their other stuff, and I like the "rough(?)" feeling to it? I dunno, I dig it.

I like it.

But is this the "masterpiece" they were talking about? I hope not.

I liked it, just kind of repetitive for a so-called masterpiece I think.

Did they totally rip of Kraftwerk's song Computer Love with their song Talk or am I missing something?

I like Coldplay a lot but in my opinion every album of theirs after their first has been a little bit worse than the previous one but I still think that they are a consistently good band.  I haven't heard this single yet (can't download right now at work) but I'm confident that I'll buy their new album pretty much day one.

When I am driving along in my hearse I listen to coldplay. Seriously, melancholic goodness - yes. I don't understand why the pop masses love it so much though.

Also digging Viva La Vida, the title track. Just dropped on iTunes I think and also pretty easy to get elsewhere. Nice strings, sounds pretty happy, really digging it.

Yeah, I quite like this track. He switched up his singing a bit and it's quite happy and 'hopeful'. The strings get pretty awesome as it goes on. I think it drags a bit at the end but it's a nice track all around.

I was pretty keen for Violet Hill due to the Brian Eno thing. I think it's a good track but definitely not a masterpiece. I don't think it sounds too poppy, people seem to have a problem with that. Not enough to drag it down in my eyes. It's a shame though, I like the track but I was hoping with Eno they'd do something really special :(.

well, i've heard the album, and personally I think it's fantastic. I really love the instrumental work. Yes, Lost!, Strawberry Swing, and Lovers in Japan are all some of my favorites, but really I love all of it. Anyone else listened to it, yet?

Liking Viva La Vida a lot so far, actually!

It has to be the most diverse Coldplay album yet, and I think it's pretty different from their previous albums. There is more variety in songs and instrumental parts are more dominant than before, plus their sound has definitely evolved since X&Y. Yes is probably the best Coldplay song I have heard. The intro sounds a lot like something Andrew Bird could do and the strings are very well used. Around 4 minutes it starts to sound like some Oceansize song for a moment until it becomes all shoegazy like Blonde Redhead or something. So far my other favorite songs are Lost!, Viva La Vida, Violet Hill and Life In Technicolor, which is an awesome intro by the way.

I've listened to the new album a couple times already and so far I really like it.

I really like the greater emphasis on strings on the album, both guitar and the addition of a lot of violin. The violin part in 'Yes' is awesome. I also like how they seem to be less afraid of pure instrumental parts, with Martin's voice being downplayed in some of the tracks.

My favorite tracks right now:
Life in Technicolor
Cemeteries of London
Yes
Viva La Vida
Violet Hill
Lovers in Japan

A definite improvement over X&Y which seemed to be a little 'spacey'. Also, in Talk they did sample that Kraftwerk songs, not exactly 'ripping off'.

putting up your songs on your website to give away for free is becoming the cool thing to do i guess.

and coldplay is dreadfully boring.

I just downloaded it today and I really like Life in Technicolor and 42 (and I'm sure I like a lot of others!). 42 of course is pretty mellow and then transitions to this heavier groove, with cheerier lyrics. Yes, I think it's mostly the lyrics that I like.

Also, Violet Hill was weird for me because at first I thought OKAY PRETTY GOOD, but as I listened more and I guess payed a little more attention to the theme of the album (Liberty Leading the People as album art), and of course LOL THE LYRICS, I liked it a lot more. So ya, I really like Violet Hill! I feel like the lyrics make direct reference to that painting, but maybe I'm just crazy.

Also, I feel like that groove in violet hill is pretty common throughout a lot of the album, like in Cemeteries, though I can't really put my finger on what to call it. Sort of a percussive clapping you hear in Lost! as well. I think it's pretty cool!

Its probably because Liberty Leading the People is such an awesome painting, or that the whole French Rebellion time period I find really fascinating, but to me it gives the whole album a sort of death-conscious not very cheery rebellionish feel. Violet Hill is the most obvious about this and to me the lyrics make pretty direct references to the social inequality of that time and such.

I dunno, I like it all...

Coldplay never fit in on the radio but when you play them through some nice speakers in a dimly lit room it is just perfect.

yeah it's not that it's bad it's just like the only way I could imagine this could be compelling is you've made your life up to be some elaborate movie and you just like stand at a pier looking determined about something and like start nodding too

also we had a thing today in class where we were displaying what music we think is relevant today and some guy chose this exact song and like I don't know if he did but he seemed like one of those guys who would wear those yellow sunglasses with the gradient fade and I can just imagine him standing under a bridge with his gradient yellow sunglasses and be like 'yeah fuckin coldplay man that's the shit samuel jackson axe deodorant myspace'

Edit: Oh right he actually said this is THE NEXT GENERATION OF MUSIC or something really superlative like that

Edit: Also using the French Revolution to sell your album is pretty shitty imo

Edit: Also Frida Kahlo

Edit: I still think that painting is pretty awesome but I don't like what they're trying to do there with French painter guy = awesome = Coldplay

Also I was right that's the painter who just randomly has exposed nipples in his paintings, like not just on liberty random dead guy does a nip slip too - it's like I would think he'd want to avoid that to have the most dramatic effect - but instead it's all like LIBERTY AND NIPPLES

Coldplay accused of stealing the melody for Viva La Vida:

Here is the song.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUhFLiw6h6s

I can't really see any major similarities. This guy is desperate or something.

I don't know about what UPRC mentioned but I have noticed some similarities in some of the songs on Viva and some other artists.

The short intro to Yes! sounds A LOT like Andrew Bird (already mentioned this once) and though you can't call that ripping off, it still sounds very similar. Lost's beginning is pretty similar to Weighty Ghost by Wintersleep. I think middle part of 42 is pretty NIN-esque and like I mentioned earlier, the part around 4 minutes in Yes! sounds like Oceansize, and the part following isn't horribly original either, even though I quite like it.

Anyway, maybe I'm stretching it a bit and all those parts could be coincidence but in any case, Coldplay definitely aren't all that unique. That doesn't bother me, they still make nice music.

Maybe you are growing out of Coldplay because I can't see how Viva is more boring than other Coldplay albums. It's clear that it's got more variety and it's not as monotonous as X&Y was for example.

When I first heard the middle part of 42, it freaked my out because with headphones on there's this one part that sounds like a guy is behind you calling you from a distance

Also, that part reminds me of Riverside.

Yeah, considering how many songs are out there, it's sort of hard for an artist to release something that TRULY sounds original.

I suppose they could do it, though. I mean, they can just string random notes and shit together but that might not sound too good......
