Title: HEY GUYS I MADE A MOVIE
Post by: Roman on May 01, 2008, 04:43:54 am
Hey guys guess what.

I made a movie wooooo.

CLICK ON THIS LINK: Media Arts II Final Project, by Miles Jadwiga (http://blip.tv/file/868944)

wiki (http://wikipedia.com/miles_jadwiga)
imdb (http://imdb.com/868944)

From IMDb:

Quote
From director Miles Jadwiga (pronounced "MEE-lay Yad-VEE-guh") comes "Media Arts II Final Project", a film he made as a student at Temple University so many years ago.  The film, according to Jadwiga, was his "first venture into the mysterious and exciting world of experimental film."  The film is about... well it's about this girl, right, and... well, it's actually about this girl and this guy, and there's a statue too, oh and a one-eyed man, and... well it's kind of experimental, you know?  Like, I guess you kinda just have to see it for yourself.  Starring Daniela Silver, Adam Moleta, Scott Murrah, and Gabe Wiener.

Review:

It's ok I guess but the production values were pretty low and whoever held the mic for the intro is clearly retarded as it keeps fucking up.  Also it might not be as good if you've never met a film major or aren't from Temple University but I don't know my brother said it was kinda funny so who knows???

6.66/10

p.s.: it's only six minutes long so watch it

i liked it!  the lead ins with the awards and jerking off were sort of funny (jerkoff went on too long, though, i thought!), and the movie itself was CONVINCINGLY SATIRICAL.  the whole thing seemed like a pretty cool idea; maybe it's because i know absolutely nothing about film but i wouldn't have expected a final to be a satire of pretentious college filmmakers and the quasi-artistic stuff they make.

I know his last name is Franklin because I remember in one of his Livejournals some kid kept calling him that and he punched him out for it or something.

Also I liked your movie I don't know anything about movies though, so...

wow, your professor must be really lax if you can jack off in your intro!

hey I dont know what to think of this. it was really weird. There's gotta be some way to get rid of background hiss/hum, no? It was really awkward going from a scene without any sound to suddenly hearing audio hiss. Also filming inside of a dorm bedroom is the gayest, doesn't everyone do that because they don't know where else to go? I liked the statue scenes, though.

I don't know. I wanted to see more of the pirate dude. He was intriguing. Overall, I had no idea what was going on. It was pretty good until the bedroom scene (ruined the mood)

I'm imagining Miles Jadwiga crying... no, weeping... with candles burning in eveyr corner of the room... and the credits of Eyes Wide Shut slowly making their way down the television and out of sight.

The video was wierd though dude. I couldn't tell if it was serious or not. What's with the dude with the eyepatch?!

Yeah I made it but KEEP IN MIND I don't have a budget and they don't teach us how to do shit here AND I had a shitty microphone so yeah I tcdidn't really know how to get that hiss out.  It's really only noticeable in two parts as far as I can tell (when the girl says "it's meaningless" and during the statue scene) and I could have avoided it in the statue scene but I was running out of time so oh well!  Also the girl who held the mic in the intro kept fucking with it or something but that took so long to do and we did so many takes and that was the best one so I just kinda stopped caring.

also yeah my real name is Roman Franklin (which is why it says "I mean Roman Franklin" at the end) but don't worry ASE, I am Polish, and Jadwiga is my mom's middle name.

edit: also in case you were wondering IT WAS VERY SERIOUS the jerking off was a statement about the current state of the poultry industry.

man i did not read this going in and seriously thought it was intentional. you probably shouldn't make too big of a deal about this with the people you show it to because it comes across as a fairly appropriate aesthetic given the circumstances of the scene!

i like how the second half of this is clearly you out there with a camera going HMMMM HOW TO MAKE THE FILM. it's absolutely mind-blowing how many student films you come across that are not concerned with this at all and just film their drunk friends being drunk.

anyway, i like this for what it is. i mean, you're obviously not pushing this as MASTERPIECE or anything but it's got some nice shot composition, has a pretty strong use of sound, and shows EVIDENCE OF THOUGHT despite its lighthearted tone, which is more than i can ever expect out of anything ever.

don't know if you're going to keep making films, but i'd like to see you do some more stuff if this is YOUR FIRST. everyone's first is always nauseating and painful, but this really isn't. next time(if there is a next time) try to really convey something personal to you or something that gets you really fired up. don't worry about it being snotty and arthouse. it happens. i see too much creativity nowadays that turns to comedy or general light-heartedness because the creators are uneasy about expressing themselves.

or maybe i am being presumptuous idk, but this is the feeling i got from this.

FINAL NOTE: do not have the cameraman ever holding the camera unless it is steadycam or you are going for ocean sick aesthetic(or you have no other choice). you did a little of this and i found it oddly jarring the first time through(and could not isolate why as i looked over it again!)

wow, your professor must be really lax if you can jack off in your intro!
you'd be surprised how far college professors will let you go if you've got something you're aiming to accomplish. i wrote/filmed some incredibly wacky shit and a good 75% of the time the professor would respond with HOLY SHIT HE IS USING HIS BRAIN!!!!!!

actually the only shot where the camera is being held is the one where the guy is looking out the window and you can see a car, and the only reason it's handheld is because it was a last minute shot that i did when i realized in editing that i forgot to do it.  everything else was shot on a shitty tripod.

i thought it was pretty funny. not the intro so much, it is a funny idea but i have seen it many other places and it was too bloated and not sharp enough. it didn't make me cringe at all though, i just didn't react to it much! the actually movie though was pretty hilarious. it was a lot like the projects the other students in my media class done.

i dunno about this. amateur film makers are usually terrible, or at least definitely will start off terrible if they go for something serious or important. i think a project like this is really the best you can do. take the piss until you get comfortable with a process, and learn how to use a camera, about the theory behind using a camera and all that stuff. that's what i done with my media studies projects in highschool and everyone pretty much agreed ours was the best because all you are trying to do is show you understand making a movie isn't just pointing a camera at your friend trying to conceal a smile because acting is so weeeird!!!!! so if you show some kind of thought, even if it's just "we'd make a terrible short film, so let's embrace that.", then i think this is preferrable to a two minute trailer for a slasher movie (this is what every single one of the other class projects were at my school)

Yeah, the intro ran a lot longer than I expected it to so it kind of drags, and I don't think the jerking off was as effective as it could have been.  THAT SAID I had to keep it for the sake of setting up the movie as PRETENTIOUS FILM STUDENT PROJECT.  Had I given myself more time to work on the project (it actually was made in two days; I wrote the script one day and shot and edited it the next) I would have made the intro shorter and more effective but I have this terrible problem with procrastination so I just worked with what I had.

I actually had a script before I made this one that was a mockumentary about Miles Jadwiga, but eventually I decided that it relied too much on dirty humor and I wasn't satisfied with the way the mock interviews were going.  Also it made more fun of Andy Warhol than film students (in one of Jadwiga's movies that would have been shown, he's getting a haircut and a film critic (aptly describe as an "artfag") says it's about "sexual dominance"; I pretty much took that directly from a documentary I saw on Andy Warhol where the same thing happened), and my original intention was to make fun of film students.  If I ever have the time/resources, though, I might make a new draft of that script and shoot it just for fun.

But yeah thanks for all the feedback guys!  I'm glad you all liked it, or at least sort of liked it.

p.s.: also want to mention to Hundley that I hate the hand held camera technique in most cases and I cringe almost every time I see it.  I remember catching a few seconds of United 93 and being unable to watch it because of the hand held camera.  Not that it MADE ME SICK or anything but I think that movies are much more VISUALLY COMPELLING or some shit when it's clear that the shot has been carefully framed and it's not just some dude pointing a camera at something.  That said, hand held cameras are good when conveying a sense of uneasiness (which now that I think about it should make it fine in United 93; maybe the part I saw was before the terrorists attacked or something), but even then it should be used sparingly.  I hate to use this as an example because I'm sure there's a better one out there but I thought the use of a hand held camera in the Patrick Swayze scene in Donnie Darko was oddly effective.  I'm not entirely sure why really but it just seemed like a good choice, but then again I haven't seen it in a while so I don't know.  Anyway I guess my point is ugh I hate hand held cameras so much so don't worry Hundley.

Sorry for the double post/necropost but just in case anybody's curious I got my grade for the project:

Quote
Roman -

I think the idea of doing a mockumentary about pretentious filmmaking has potential, but to pull it off you need to take as much or more care with your documentary footage as you do your fake art film. In this piece, the work you're attempting to mock is better than your self interview, so the point is sort of lost. It ends up seeming more bitter than funny. You clearly have talent and I think it would be better used making films that you want to make rather than pointing out the weaknesses of a style you don't like.

- Bruce

Grade: 18/25

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THIS.  Personally it sounds fair enough but then you see 18/25 and I don't know man that's like a C isn't it?  Fuck that.

His comments are very fair but I would definitely look further into the grade, yeah. He's right though. For a final project he was probably expecting more of what YOU have to offer.
