What's the story morning glory?
this is mainly posed towards the dok but i'm really interested in something you can eat that's supposedly really good for you that grows like a weed
this topic is about eating dandelions and other things like dandelions you can eat (what are they, do they taste good, how to eat them)
-
Yeah man I just munch them on the way to school/work wherever but I'm no good at cookin' em so I also am really interested in what type of foods you can create using dandelions.
A Dandelion milkshake perhaps? Dandelion stew?
YUM YUM oops got dandelion seeds in my keyboard
-
Average cost of a meal: $5
Average cost of dandelions: $0
i want to feast on delicious savings

Dandelions are grown commercially on a small scale as a leaf vegetable. The leaves (called dandelion greens) can be eaten cooked or raw in various forms, such as in soup or salad. They are probably closest in character to mustard greens. Usually the young leaves and unopened buds are eaten raw in salads, while older leaves are cooked. Raw leaves have a slightly bitter taste. Dandelion salad is often accompanied with hard boiled eggs. The leaves are high in vitamin A, vitamin C and iron, carrying more iron and calcium than spinach.[4]
Dandelion flowers can be used to make dandelion wine, for which there are many recipes.[5] It has also been used in a saison ale called Pissenlit (literally "wet the bed" in French) made by Brasserie Fantôme in Belgium. Another recipe using the plant is dandelion flower jam. Ground roasted dandelion root can be used as a coffee substitute. Dandelion root is a registered drug in Canada, sold principally as a diuretic. A leaf decoction can be drunk to "purify the blood", for the treatment of anemia, jaundice, and also for nervousness. Drunk before meals, dandelion root coffee is claimed to stimulate digestive functions and function as a liver tonic. "Dandelion and Burdock" is a soft drink that has long been popular in the United Kingdom with authentic recipes sold by health food shops. It is unclear whether cheaper supermarket versions actually contain extracts of either plant.
Dandelion brewski anyone?

i take kelp tablets for indigestion and heart burn. i thought this was ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS when i first heard, but my mom insisted i give it a try and it actually fucking works somehow.
the purple pill is such a fucking crock of shit
-
I actually drink Dandelion and burdock fairly regularly and it's a nice drink.
-
In all seriousness, back in middle school we had dandelion cookies for Home Ec, and before then we knew dandelions were edible, so as a kid I gave it a shot. Not something I'd go out of my way to eat, but they don't taste bad.
-
the wine isn't bad, but i really can't see myself eating raw dandelion greens....or cooked for that matter. sometimes paying for food is worth it.
-

shit i remember his drink. my friend used to have it at his house when i was young, and i always had some when i went there, i loved it. i've got to get that stuff again.
-
Do you cook the flowers?
-
Once I saw this old trailer that was all sealed up and stuff...and I was totally bored so I got my hammer and broke into the fucking trailer and you know what I found? Beer from fucking 1999! Thats like Bat Fuck Insane right? So I drank one of the bottles and the next thing I know I was vomiting all over the place....(BTW the beer was cold cause i live in a place where its always cold otuside)
Anyways its kinda irrelevant but I'm just saying..if you ever see some old abandoned trailer you might find some good shit in there...
-
yeah that was one of the things i was concerned about as well, but i mean surely it wouldn't be that hard to have a dandelion garden or something
also are there any other delectibles i can forrage for?
-
wouldn't it be pretty unhealthy eating dandelions that grow out of the soil in urban areas? I find it strange that dok like won't eat cooked meat because of carcinogens or whatever but doesn't seem to mind eating grass from polluted soil (unless he happens to live in the woods or on a farm or something).
you'd think so! but since dok has a complete disregard for anything logical or factual this isn't that surprising
-
I have clear memories of picking dandelions and eating the stems as a child riding my wagon... I didn't know they were edible... I was just nasty...
-
Yeah dudes I didn't see this until today. I don't see what you guys think is so weird about this. Our ancestors were hunter-gatherers so they did pretty much the same thing. Men go out and hunt, woman gather edibles like roots and berries and shit. I'd much rather eat a salad full with dandelions that I can get in my backyard rather than pay 1.99 (or however much it is) to buy a bag full of iceberg lettuce when I can get shit for free. It's the way it was intended yo. The world sucks when our basic necessity (food) is put under lock and key and owned.

I don't live in a really heavy populated city and I do not eat dandelions that grow within ten feet from the road. I mostly pick my dandelions in the field by my house which is not next to the road.
Pretty soon I will be able to get mulberries and crab apples :)
Also yeah I drink teas made from shit like Dandelion roots, Burdock roots, Cat's Claw bark, Devil's Claw roots, Blessed Thistle, Nettle...etc

Different Thistles
Comfrey
Crabapples
Cattails
uhh you live in NZ I don't know what kind of shit grows by you. The book I have is for central and eastern US.
-
How do they taste? Are they bitter sweet or what?
-
Sometimes I graze, when I don't want to shell out a couple bucks for take-out. The rabbits started using my spot, though, so I'm considering pissing all over it to show them who's who. Y'know, territorial stuff.
Anyways yeah how do they taste? Raw, or cooked, or what?
-
They are a little bitter. I usually have the leaves in salads with with other greens + toppings + a home made dressing.
The roots I take out, wash most of the dirt off (as much as I can) and then dry them in my dehydrator and then cut them up to be used as tea.
-
i don't know what any of those are except crab apples maybe

Hahahahaha this was rather enjoyable.
Dok are you suffering from any excessive weight loss or anything as a result of this? Do you have to take vitamin pills or anything?

Why would you say that? I eat other shit besides just dandelions.
And no I don't take any vitamin pills the only things I take are natural supplements like Spriulina, wheatgrass powder and juice, maca powder...etc. No point in taking a synthetic vitamin when I can get everything in nature.

Cause I know people who are vegetarians and they are like "oh noes how come i have iron defiancy and have to take tablets all the time". So I was wondering how it would effect you since you are a little more "extreme" than just a simple vege.
-
I didn't know dandelions are edible.. I thought they were just plants that fly with the wind. I guess we don't have dandelions on the tropical.

Because most regular vegetarians eat a lot of dairy products which have no iron in them. That's how my sister is. She eats frozen pizza like every day.
And because lots of them don't know shit about nutrition like what vitamins and minerals are in what foods and stuff.

I hear pine needles make a good tea and have Vitamin C or something in them??????

YESSS! Also you can make tea out of Oak tree bark :)
-
I wouldn't mind trying a pine tea. Do you just boil the needles, or what?
-
Yeah pretty much or just steep the needles in hot water like you would with any loose leaf tea.
-
I got like 15 types of tea in my house, I ain't boilin no fuckin pine needles.
Although pine tea does sound quite refreshing.
-
But doesn't heat destroy all the vitamin C?
-
you guys can make fun of him all you want, but foraging is actually really fun!
i think it's probably more fun for me though, because i live in the desert. you can eat pretty much any cactus (as long as you can get the thorns off) and prickly pear is especially delicious.
also, a lot of cacti like prickly pear, barrel, and saguaro have tasty flowers, and you can make the fruit into jam
-
sorry the only foraging i do is in food lion or kroger
also FORAGING FOR DANDELIONS AND PINECONES in your backyard is not fun, it's gay as hell and only someone like doktormartini would enjoy it.
-
I dug through a trashcan once
-
Did you find a burger?

living off the land is pretty cool actually which is why i made this topic

there's a difference between living off the land and doktormartini roaming around in his backyard trying to find some tasty dandelions

when I was a wee lad, we used to go berry picking. Around town, bushes would grow. You could only take em if they was like at least a metre twenty off the ground, because any lower had likely been pissed on by drunks. Foraging for dandelions is a pretty funny image, but it also has some kinda naive charm about it.
Nowadays we grow our own fruit and veg in a nice big plot. It's great to have your own carrots and shit. Especially strawberries (I love strawberries). Me and my dad wanted about half the garden for growing stuff, but my mum likes having a lawn :(
But we're doing ok. We grow Carrots, potatoes, parsnips, strawberries, some other berries, rhubarb, greenbeans etc and we're always composting leftovers and other stuffs (have two large compost bins). Not exactly foraging, but it is pretty cool and refreshing to have some responsibility and control over the creation of food you eat.
I also wanna keep some bees when I'm older because i love honey, but they scare the shit out of me, and seem to be dying!

I'D RATHER GO TO A STORE AND PAY FOR IT INSTEAD OF EATING GROSS STUFF OUT OF DIRT
-
Did you find a burger?
Nope but I found a used diaper and an empty beer bottle
-
The difference between what I am doing and living off the land is that I am not living solely on dandelions. If I wanted to live off the land entirely I would make a hut, not use electricity, and get all my food from nature.
-
But everything you eat comes from the Earth
It's so magical

Yes but I have to pay for it lol.
Hell yeah I just found out Catnip and Burdock is growing in my yard! Also, I'm trying Pine Tea later today I will tell you how it is :)
Join GW Foraging Club 2008 lol.
-
hell yes! cat boners!
-
you will strong as lion
-
the only worthwhile foraging is for psycobilin shrooms
-
Ase that is awesome. I have a juicer similar to that so I may try that soon!
My smoothies usually consist of:
Mixed berries including Goji
Raw Chocolate powder
Maca Powder
Water
Lucuma Powder
Hemp Protein powder + Maca + E3 Live
Spirulina Powder
Wheatgrass Powder
Flax Seeds
Chia Seeds
Hemp Seeds
Agave Nectar
Cinnamon Powder
Cayenne Powder
Ginger Powder
And it makes two cup fulls I usually drink one cup in the morning and the other cup throughout the day. It looks dark purple haha.
