After being up for quite a long time, Blizzard Entertainment asked the owner of the domain Diablo3.com (a fansite) for control of the domain, and he gave the domain over to them willingly.
They said they were like protecting their trademarks or something, but it's pretty bs because Diablo3.com has been around for ages, and well known, and Blizz has known about them for ages. With applications asking for people to work with people from the Diablo team, it looks like Diablo 3 is coming dudes. Or something related to it.
Thoughts?
-
I wasn't ever really into Diablo back in the day but I did acquire it a few years back and played quite a bit(lost now) so I would be hugely interested in a third, plus it's Blizzard so? This is good news I guess, but what's gonna happen to that fan site?
-
They said they were like protecting their trademarks or something
Which is also BS because diablo is an actual word. The logo can be trademarked but not the name.
My thoughts? I have none considering it takes Blizzard 4 years to come up with anything worth showing.

Said this on .org but
http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=6&ti=1,6&Search_Arg=Blizzard%20Entertainment&Search_Code=NALL&CNT=25&PID=3421&SEQ=20080505035323&SID=2
They have copyright over the franchise name dude.
If you couldn't copyright solo words for a franchise, then Take Two could go and make an RPG called Fable 3 and make it complete shit just because "you can't copyright the word Fable".
They aren't copyrighting the word, they copyright the franchise. This allows them to take legal action/injunctions on people who would do anything that would harm their franchise, such as creating a website called Diablo 3 and withholding the name from Blizzard and then asking them to pay for it (cybersquatting, also illegal), creating a game similar to it and called Diablo X or Diablo: _______ without their permission, and such.
-
I was talking in reference to the word itself. I didn't know Diablo 3 was ORIGINALLY a Diablo fansite just some shitty website that some dude bought in hopes that he could cybersquat. If I purchase a website domain called Diablo4 and I use it to sell rocket t-shirts can they still sue me if I don't relinquish the name? My argument is "you guys own diablo 1-3." I think I could carry this shit in court!

Yeah, I'm kinda skeptical about this meaning a new Diablo game. Mainly because Blizzard North was dissolved.

So what the game is confirmed for 2015 or something? =\

Job Update 03/14/08
New Position - Senior 3D Level Designer
The team behind Diablo I and II is looking for a skilled senior 3D level designer with experience building levels using Maya or other similar 3D level-building tools. The ideal candidate has created levels on a shipped game. We would also like for this candidate to have excellent analytical understanding of competitive online play with various Blizzard Entertainment games and mods (real-time strategy, World of Warcraft, Defense of the Ancients, etc.). The senior level designer needs to be able to create fun and interesting environments that look and play great while mentoring the junior members of the level design team. For more information, check out the posting.

Blizz North was dissolved, but thats because they moved everyone into the same building. They all work in their super huge fucking mansion now.
-
I used to go on diabloii.net all the time to look up diablo 2 stuff and anytime blizzard register a new domain there was a giant uproar. once they were flipping out because apparently a bunch of blizzard guys were sent to the place that they recorded the music for diablo 2 at. so as far as i know this has been going on for a while.
-

Seriously, that is what pisses me off the most about Blizzard's practices. They announce or let slip information about their games when they're not even past the conceptual stage, which makes everyone go HOT DAMN NEED THIS NOW for like the 10 years following the entire fucking development cycle of the game.
Hell, look at Warcraft Adventures and Starcraft Ghost, they got announced with fucking CONCEPTUAL ART AND VIDEOS, ended up being cancelled for being awful shit and people WOULD NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP about the game.
-
The thing about Blizzard is that if they decide that their games are shit, even like MOMENTS BEFORE ITS RELEASE, they won't release their games.
They're a bunch of perfectionists that take a bajillion years to get things done. Diablo III would be interesting, but how could they get the story to work? Wasn't the Worldstone kinda, well, destroyed? How can they continue from that, man. It just wouldn't work. Unless some shit like NEW EVILS appear or something.

The destruction of the Worldstone changes the world/reality, so anything could happen.
also there's these books....and stuff....so they can do a prequel and stuff too!

Ah ha ha ha. It's so awesome that being a skilled dota player would actually help in a resume.
also there's these books....and stuff....so they can do a prequel and stuff too!
The books are terrible and are almost completely unrelated.... but a prequel is something to work with.
-
I don't really care since Diablo is a repetitive mindless boring game so whatever.

Terrible yes, but they're still canonical.

oic
I think Diablo's storyline is one of the worse stories that Blizzard games have to offer. It's more based off of game play and customization, so there isn't much you can do for story.
The cutscenes in DII were always amazing to me, and they gave me an incentive to beat the game. Actually, that's how it was with most Blizzard games for me. Actually, I played WCIII, SC, and Diablo II when I was young and weird.
-
Terrible yes, but they're still canonical.
Approved by Blizzard.... yes. But they are as relevant as fan fiction. The only reason why I read them was because I was a Blizzard fanboy at the time... and even then, I didn't like them.... and I have no standards in my litratures.

They are fairly relevant and canonical, they're related to the greater Diablo story.

:fogetlaugh: I still wonder what happened with that game, and why they waited like 5 years just to cancel it. I was so excited for starcraft ghost.
And IMO,
I think they will be making a diablo3. As unlikely as blizzard says its going to be, I dont see much reason in taking down the diablo3.com site without some indication that they are in the process of making it. I guarantee that in 1-2 years the diablo3 site will re-done with screen shots and info about the game. Oh well I'm actually excited, diablo was one of my favorite game series. I still love playing them every once in a while.
- However... as good as a new diablo 3 game would be. Idk about a prequel... I mean diablo, mephitso, and baal were always the fun parts of the game, being able to kill them... If it is actually going to be a prequel, you obviously wouldn't be fighting diablo... and if its after, they are already dead. So who will be the antagonist(s)?

Probably less time actually, the WWI (World Wide Invitational) takes place on Diablo's anniversary.

Yeah, this. I've never understood what people see in Diablo. :(

its all about the 1337 gear of course
...god i hated diablo

I kinda liked diablo 2 but it was essentially a VERY small game world and a very short game that was artificially extended by not having enough experience or enemies in the game, causing you to reply baal/cows hundreds, or more likely thousands, of times with a single character. That's just boring grind imo.
Iirc the team that made diablo 2 left blizzard and formed flagship studios, and then went on to make hellgate london (which was 'spiritual' diablo 3). And hellgate london is a fucking terrible game.

Mythos.
Go play it.
It's way better than HGL, made by the same team to test their engine.
Mythos is like Diablo 2 with a bigger world, more shit to do, cooler classes (GNOLL WITH CIGAR + GUNS = EPIC) and shit.
It gets me every time how an engine test is better than their actual first game made on the engine.
Also only some of the Diablo team left.

Diablo 2 was a blast the first time through. Today though, it's pretty dull unless you play it with a friend or two over TCP/IP or something.
Given how Diablo 2 evolved from the first game, which was just "here is a dungeon, now reach time bottom," I think Diablo 3, if it really is on the way, will be pretty open-ended. Ideally, I'd like Diablo 3 to retain the same gameplay and camera view, but full 3D graphics and, like I said, an open-ended world (ie. Elder Scrolls games) would be damn fantastic.
Socketing should (read: will, if the game really is in the works) return, but seriously.. It should play a bigger role. I think EVERY item should be socketable, and how your gear develops should depend on what kind of socket items you find or make rather than just playing through the cow level a hundred times to get some ungodly powerful weapon.

Heh heh, I'm gonna socket my potions... Sorry I know what you meant but still, thats the first thing that popped in my mind. Also, this IS blizzard, I'd buy the damn game if it had the second ones graphics.

Yeah, me too. I played through Diablo 2 a few months back and, while the graphics were horribly dated, they were by no means ugly.

This was pretty much established that they were thinking of a sequel to Diablo 2 when they revealed they couldn't decide whether their next project was to make Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2.
-
Chances are it's most likely going to be announced at Blizz's World Wide Invintational in Paris.
It's on June 28th - 29th, which will mark the 8 year anniversary of Diablo 2

Maybe the studio has enough manpower to work on two games? They are making a truly absurd amount of money from WoW (10 million subscribers at $15 per month generates revenues a little bit like putting out a game as successful as Bioshock or something every month!) and I'm sure the studio could afford to do just about anything at this point.

They don't make 10,000,000 x 15 tho, btw, because a lot of people take package deals, and some foreign countries (China etc) pay per hour, instead of month.
still pretty HIGH UP THERE though, but they probably spent tons of that money on their new FUCKING MANSION with EPIC BENEFITS such as SAND VOLLEYBALL COURT.
I *still* don't get that.
Blizzard Guy #1: Yo, we have so much money what should we do?
Blizzard Guy #2: Well we have a ton of servers that are starting to su-
Blizzard Guy #3: Sand Volleyball Court.
Blizzard Guy #1: BRILLIANT!!!

Oh yeah of course. But still I bet there are at least 3 or 4 million US accounts paying $15 per month and that's loads of cash dude (like you said). Although they are always iterating and stuff so I imagine it's an expensive game to run too.

I have heard that Rockstar is sort of the same way. It's pretty wild because I envision game development offices as just normal everyday office buildings but every once in awhile you'll read about something weird like Garriott's mansion where they used to make Ultima games and the Rockstar and Blizzard offices.

Fun as hell on LAN though. I never enjoyed it til I played it LAN with a friend or a group of friends.
I'm keen for Diablo III just for this reason.
-
I agree. the multiplayer is what draws me to Diablo. then I can put all my skill points into Jump Attack for barbarian, and leap across the level to save the group, ahahaa, I miss doing that.
