I don't know if anybody else's noticed this, but I took notice yesterday chatting with my girlfriend (And then procceeded to test it with friends and my brother)
It seems like the MSN server is blocking any messages containing http://youtube.com or www.youtube.com
How cool is that, huh?
-
WOW AREN'T YOU COOL LETS ADD $ SIGNS TO A BUSINESS I'M SURE MICROSOFT IS PURELY UNIQUE AS A BUSINESS IN THEIR ENDEAVORS TO MAKE MONEY NO ONE ELSE DOES THIS
works fine for me, btw.
edit: oops was talking to them on AIM, so I tried it on MSN and you're right.
you're still retarded for adding $ signs to Microsoft's name.
edit: for example how is this related to $ in any way.
-
You fucking suck, the whole $$$ was pretty much a joke. Still, this fucking sucks.
-
jesus why are they doing that? I never used MSN really but now I'm really not going to! Too much of a hassle.
-
The MSN messaging server does this or the MSN client?
-
they probably got tired of faggots rickrolling people
which is a very legitimate reason
-
It blocks googlepages too though. And a number of other things, like mediafire.
Also it boots you out of a group conversation if you try to link to one of the blocked pages. :^'

Judging by the tone of your post, you are actually seriously in need of an explanation.
Alright, to see how this relates to money, first you should consider the kind of company Microsoft is and why they would do such a thing. I'll spell things out for you:
- They've already received two hefty fines from the EU—one of 500 and one of 900 million dollars. These fines were given to them because they were found to be guilty of abusing their monopoly.
- They very recently launched a service called Messenger TV (http://messengertv.msn.com/mkt/es-es/default.htm), a service that directly competes with YouTube (though it caters to a slightly different audience).
- YouTube is owned by Google, which is their fiercest direct competitor in the online services market.
- They have shown in the past that they are perfectly willing to use "unfair" tactics to get people to use their product. Before you say that "any company does that", let me say that this is untrue, as a similar situation would be Google preventing you from getting search results related to Yahoo or Live Search.
Microsoft has never really ceased to show how terrible a company it is. Before this, their most recent corporate abuse was the rigging of the ISO vote on OOXML. The reason why they do these things is because they want to preserve their relevance, which can only be done if they get as many people as possible to be dependent on their product.

I thought I was the only one with that, I wonder what else they're filtering?

Here are some others (http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=549110&cid=23362028), according to some guy on Slashdot. Generally, the filtering tool is used to prevent phishing sites from being linked to, so there are likely to be very many entries in their filter.
-
youtube links work fine for me and my friends??
has this filter been turned on in europe? or is it a NA thing only?

also is there any non-shitty messanger people actually use? all the mainstream ones seem really terrible.
-
pidgin is okay but the file transfers over MSN are a hell of a lot slower than using the official client
it DOES however do AIM, IRC, ICQ all those networks with the one app
-
So, how long before they find a way to get past the workaround? Maybe next they'll filter any message with 'youtube' in it.
-
I'm thinking they'll probably lift the filter in some time. I've already seen news articles being posted on the issue, so maybe they'll decide that they don't like the negative attention.
-
I've tried http://youtube.com and www.youtube.com on msn and it isn't filtered for me either.
-
It seems like they dropped the filters on youtube...
Also, it was the protocol, not the client (I use Trillian and my brother was using Adium, when we tested it)
-
Hey I don't know if this is just me but last time I went to my Hotmail, anytime I opened up an email my Windows Live Messenger came up. Does this have something to do with Windows Live Email?
It was kind of annoying.

I use trillian, low resource usage, uses AIM/MSN/Yahoo/ICQ, and doesn't have any crap that brings you out of full screen mode.

Miranda IM. stock install is basic but functional, and its incredibly customisable so you can make it look pretty as hell (its like foobar2000 but for instant messaging)
-
ya gonna have to go with Miranda IM.

You're dumb. He was joking and this is clearly a fucked up practice.
But yeah I noticed this a couple of days ago when Cliff told me. On multi-protocol clients you can still send the links, but they get filtered out by the MSN protocol. On the native MSN client it simply tells you that the message cannot be sent if you try to send a YouTube URL. Also they did this before when they rejected GMAIL invites on Hotmail, but that was lifted after some time.

Holy cow guys, I just tried out Miranda on the recommendations of this topic and I just want to say thanks okay.
Actually, Tabbed conversations would be nice as would skins that actually affect the CHAT BOX which I can't seem to find.
-
for those who like to stick to msn, the program itself, use msn+ and apatch. msn+ adds scripting and skins I believe, as well as tabs and other useful features, and apatch lets you get rid of ads and other stuff that clutters up msn.
-
it'd be nice to have a version that didn't use as much ram as the original yahoo messenger
i make most of my decisions based on resource use

if you want chat box skins you probably want to install the IEView addon

I have MSN messenger open in my tray most of the time without me even realising it.
And I don't even use it anymore.
