Title: [PS3 owners, PC owners] Dual Sound Input to Speakers
Post by: Carrion Crow on May 12, 2008, 05:11:04 pm
Hey,

I'm getting a PS3 soon and I am wondering how I am going to connect up the sound to my PC speakers so I can play PS3 without having to mess around too much. Here's the deal:

Come on then techies, let's hear it. :)

I am trying to avoid splashing out too much cash. As much as I would love to buy a new stereo for my PC's audio system I don't think my student budget can stretch to that extent. The fact that I've managed to convince my family to buy me a PS3 for my 21st is a steal enough for me!

As far as getting both outputs into your sound system, you could go to a local electronics store (Radio shack) and by a simple splitter.  It'll just be a Y shaped cable with two inputs and one output.  I'm not knowledgable about what effect this will have on sound quality, but I've used it before for connecting multiple mics into one amp and it worked fine.

Keep your PC speakers plugged into your PC, then get a composite to 3.5mm converter and stick it in the "line in" for your sound card.

Ok, I have my PS3 attached to my monitor, and my cheap 5.1 speakers attached to my soundcard on my PC. I want to do pretty much the same thing, use the same set of speakers without having to keep moving the inputs all the time.

I believe this is a similar situation, how would I go about doing this?

I believe getting two of the Y adapters JohnnyCasil spoke of will help you with that, one for front and one for rear. There's also switchboxes to switch between two or more 5.1 systems that are available at most electronics stores.
