Recently I've been looking for an anime about romance yet that is still rather mature. My main problem with most romance series, OVAs, mangas and movies I've seen is that they all go really immature, try to be really funny, too much fan service for no reason or they go all pink. So far I've heard that Voices From A Distant Star is pretty good so I'm currently reading the manga and downloading the OVA. I've also watched Love Hina but my main problem with it was by far too much fan service and they just wasn't a really good conclusion to what was going on between Naru and Keitaro. Another series I really enjoyed quite a few years ago was Boys Be, it was just really great but I don't remember a lot of it.
A few years ago I also read the Kenshin mangas and thought they were great. Outside of anime, I really like the Crow (first movie only, I can't find the original comic book series anywhere so I haven't read it yet) and stuff like that. Any anime that's a little more mature is also appreciated. I'm becoming so very difficult with anime hahaha. Anyways, any recommendation is very appreciated.

if you wanted a good conclusion between Naru and Keitaro then you gotta watch the OVA "Love Hina Again", after the 3rd OVA you will have something summed up I believe. Aside from Love Hina i've never seen a romantic anime let alone a non comedic one.
-
Even in Love Hina Again I wasn't very satisfied with it...

how bout honey & Clover?? classmates are over it, i mean male classmates so it might be something that is somehow nonfanboyish.. or better yet Bitter Virgin,
-
yeah, honey and clover is pretty dope, watch that.
With the romance genre, even if you can find something that isn't all SWEATDROP *falls over* with covert shots of anime underpants for degenerates to jack off to, they still usually have really unrealistic and awful female (and to a lesser extent male) characters. But Honey and Clover is actually pretty well-written and the characters have depth beyond "I GATTA GET LADE / HERE IS MY PERSONALITY QUIRK"
also, if you don't mind overblown melodrama with some fruity magical shit tossed in, the Key adaptations (Air, Kanon, Clannad) and EF - A Tale of Memories are okay too, if you turn off your brain.

Just watch the last episode of School Days. It's all the drama you will ever need in an anime.

Ugh, putting the words "realistic" and "romance" together in any TV show, anime or not, pretty much narrows the playing field to almost nothing.
Erm, yeah. Honey and Clover is a good bet; it tries to be funny (and succeeds IMO), but the characters there are quite three-dimensional and not just the stereotypical Kimagure Orange Road spinoff. Bokura no Ita is also a pretty real and effective portrayal, though it focuses more on the aftermaths of a relationship rather than the relationship itself. SaiKano is entirely serious, mature, and cheese-free, though its situation may be a bit too idealized for you to enjoy. Ashiteruze Baby has a slightly different focus than love - that of a former playboy brother suddenly having to deal with the responsibility of taking care of a child - though there are romantic, well-portrayed elements within the show. Koi Kaze is real almost to a fault; it's about a incestrous relationship between a grown man and a sixteen-year old daughter, though it's one of the most realistic and accurate anime I've seen in a while. Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora and Spice and Wolf are what you'd call entirely serious anime, though the romance is not actively portrayed and only hinted by the progressively friendly relationship between the male and female leads. The melodrama series mentioned earlier (and Rumbling Hearts) are okay if you're into that kind of excessive drama, and - er, I don't think I have anything else to add.
Also, never watch the last episode of School Days. You will never watch another anime again if you do so.

Chainer is pretty much right on the money.
Hell, you don't even need to watch the rest of the series. Just go watch the last one. Now.
-
Give Maison Ikkoku a shot. The former was made by the person who made Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha, but is different in that it is the story of two people in a mundane world. No dragons, curses, or over-the-top action. Just a modern setting. You might also want to look into Eureka 7. Beyond the mecha and wind surfing, it is fairly realistic.
-
i thought it was pretty gay but you might like NANA or whatever. it still kind of has a lot of that silly anime shit but there is also DRINKING//GETTING PREGNANT OH GOD WHO'S THE DAD so it's probably a fair bit more ADULT or w/e in terms of themes than shit like love hina. honestly the whole genre's kind of a wasteland though so i don't know why you bother.
-
Romance is probably one of the shittiest genres when it comes to anime, mainly because they usually keep all the general stupid anime humor and weird shit around (lets cross-dress / fall over LoL ^___^), while still trying to maintain a somewhat serious atmosphere. Oh, and the female characters are just... sad to watch most of the time.
One of the few exceptions to the rule I can think of is probably 5 Centimeters per Second (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4568). Since it's made by the same director as Voices From a Distant Star I think you'll like it. If not it's probably worth seeing just because of the amazing animation and scenery.

Nodame Cantabile is kind of a goofy romance thing, but more than that.
-
I have only watched one like, "romance" anime and it was called Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
I really liked it I guess, although it has some fanservice

the world of romance anime in emotes

^.^
You will get to know these well as EVERY SINGLE joke/event in EVERY SINGLE romance anime is based around these expressions, in the vain hope that it can be classed as humour/emotion. It doesn't work.

Kare Kano is the only one I've come across that I've remotely enjoyed.

Seconded, too bad the anime isn't as good as the manga at some parts.
Rumbling Hearts probably?
I'm also one of the people that will recommend the Last Episode of School Days, oh and watch the uncut version, it's subbed don't worry.
-
I started watching School Days like the first 3 episodes and I didn't even want t watch the last one. I kinda lost hope about romance anime heh.... Most of them are completely horrible. 5 centimeters per second is basically the same thing as Voices From A Distant Star.
I pretty much lost most of my interest in anime because of this though, I wanted something a little more realistic etc, maybe more like a normal TV show and well it doesn't exist. I might try to look for some manga now but I doubt I'll find some. I'll check your other recommendations later since I'm already downloading a lot of stuff right now.

i was pretty astounded to see trash head SUGGEST AN ANIME so i went and downloaded it immediately and
it is not all that good but it is definitely WAY WAY BETTER than anything else i've seen in the genre. kimi ga nozomu ein or whatever is overwrought and nana is just dumb and unfunny AND ALSO overwrought. this is okay! it is not particularly funny most of the time but it doesn't really piss you off like most shows, either.
the biggest problem i have with it is how there's some college freshman these two older students are in love with and for some reason she looks about 12. WHY??? i am pretty positive they want to show adults being in love with children but at the same time don't want it to be disgusting so they just settled and drew a twelve year old but then were like ITS OKAY GUYS SHES 18 DONT WORRY even though she looks/acts like she is 12 in just about every conceivable way.
so yeah trash head what/.... what happened to you man you used to be cool
