Title: Tomohawk recommendation thread
Post by: tomohawkjoe on May 17, 2008, 04:27:56 am
Okay, So I have been listening to alot of music lately. More than I usually ever do. It was during this period that I don't have a great variety of music, so I decided I need more.. Lots and Lots more. I know this is very vague and all but I'm going to try to atleast make it sensible. First off, I'm generally open to anything as long as its not
A.)Tejano/TexMex/Nortena/etc
B.)Black Metal
C.)Visual Kei
D.)Most Indie

I repeat, none of the four above.

Thats really it. Really, throw me anything you have. I really enjoy music and I want to hear more. Just throw shit at me.

we could seriously use just a RECOMMENDATIONS MEGATHREAD sticky.

also man idk what you want me to do there's a lot of music that doesn't fall into that and you didn't really give any qualifiers.

just look at some best of lists and try them out, Pitchfork has a few good ones that while often underrepresentative of a lot of trends do also touch on some necessities.

Actually, I really need to ask you something sir. I've been listening to talking heads for a while now and it would be nice to hear something other than Remain In Light. Not that RIL is bad, its just I'm sure they have more shit I just don't know where to start.

most of it is pretty solid. I personally recommend:

More Songs About Buildings and Food
Fear of Music (Life During Wartime rules)
Stop Making Sense (easily one of the most famous live albums of all time)
The Name of the Band is Talking Heads (another good live album, here's pitchfork)

Quote
Part of the charm and power of Stop Making Sense the film is that it almost purely translates the live experience of a rock show audience rather than the experience of a touring band. There is no backstage fly-on-the-wall stuff, no dressing room preparations, on-the-bus interviews, caterers, hotel clerks or road managers. Rather, it's the snapshot of one live document with the camera playing the role of a punter, trained completely on the band in an attempt to recreate the experience of attending the show. It works so well that it's almost jarring when the camera finally closes in on audience members dancing in the aisles during the show's finale.

Musically, this approach is a bit limiting. As powerful as Talking Heads were at the time, Stop Making Sense still functions as a live document of one band at one moment in time (well, not technically–- the film was actually recorded over three nights). For a group such as this, who paid attention to the musical world around them, deftly and quickly folding outside influences as seemingly disparate as disco, afrobeat, funk and new wave into their already unique sound, The Name of This Band's approach-- collecting various live performances over a four-year period-- is more revelatory and rewarding. It functions as both a timeline in which a listener can trace the band's development and definitive proof that some of their supposed great departures-- particularly an accomplished and complex rhythm section-- were there from the onset.

also check out Brian Eno if you like the more experimental Heads stuff (ITS ALL EXPERIMENTAL!!!)

oh also something you might not know and I'm not saying EDIT THAT SHIT because it's no big deal but muzak is actually a disparaging term for shitty elevator music!

Really? Goddamnit I'm so behind on music. I'll edit that right now, but fuck man. I feel like I have no Idea whats going on in the music world.

Wait, is Stop making Sense a film or live ablum? Either way, I'll try and check them out tonight for sure.

its actually an older term so the meaning might have acquired a new connotation, Idk.

also it's both, the film is regarded by many as the best concert video of all time and also very representative of the 80s, and the album is pretty good too.

Alright, I'm getting The Name of the Band is Talking Heads. Hopefully it will be done by tomorrow, but I'm gonna go ahead and look for Stop Making Sense.

EDIT: Actually, you know what. We can just go ahead and make this into the GENERAL REC THREAD. It would make more sense.

Unless you want us to recommend our favorite bands or something.

What was I just listening to that mentioned muzak? This is going to bother me. 'listening to your muzak', I have a feeling it was a recent artist too.

You should get around to listening to the rest of their stuff eventually, joe. In addition to what Magical Negro said, 'Speaking in Tongues' has a couple of their other popular singles on it.

Do you want new or old stuff? New is usually easier.

Go for it. I seriously just want more music. Hell, this week I found out about (fuck this is gonna sound like a namedrop) FC Five, Monkey Majik, and TesseracT, three completely unrelated bands and I enjoyed all of them. It kinda made me realize how much music is out there that I haven't even touched.

EDIT: Yeah, the hip-hop one helped out, but I couldn't get into proto-punk so much. Actually, I should probably clear that up to. Not so much punk. The only form of punk I can really enjoy is hardcore punk and some early 70s stuff, idk punk just never grew on me.

speaking of #music you should go there tomahawkjoe.....

and yeah, I'd imagine the topics and articles steel mentioned would be a pretty good start. The only bands I have checked out so far is Love and Talking Heads but I don't really have too much free time at the moment and I don't want to download too much new music this year because I always end up getting too much and not listening to what I already have enough.

Monkey Majik gets pretty shit a lot, but they are okay for being a pop band.

actually they are PRETTTTTTY SHIT but I'll give you a let I guess.

also go to #music why not. just be aware a lot of the people there do have bad taste for real (that Furret guy loves Paris Hilton I think) so make sure you check out some youtubes or something.

How exactly does the whole IRC work? I've never actually done anything IRC related.

get this free client called MIRC, run it, put in some shit for your name TOMAHAWKJOE etc, and then type /server irc.whahay.net and then /join #music after the server stuff stops loading.

there's a whole topic about it in general I think.

Well, I'll see what I will recommend.

Also, I have been thinking that it would be cool to do this mixtape thing with music forum regulars. Everyone who wants to participate would make a mixtape with a certain amount of songs and we would share one per week, possibly anonymous (and maybe with tracks renamed so people won't know the artists and if they are genuinely interested in them, they can ask about them in the topics) so people won't skip them just because it's from someone who has a different taste in music than you do. No prejudices, just....... plain muzak.

okay sure sharing muzak but I don't think it would really be harmful.

As for IRC, read rami's sticky in general forum, it's helpful.

I think the current trend of the TOTWs helps because it's like a mixtape with all the youtubes. other than making a playlist of them and linking it's the same thing and not illegal.

get Gang of Four if you want something downstraight rad. Album: Entretainment

Girls Against Boys is a cool rocker band that usually plays with 2 basses, so it is heavy on the bass but really knows how to hold a rocking groove. These guys are blessed by Brendan Canty (Fugazi's drummer). Album: Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby

Fugazi, if you haven't heard em yet. They are basically a legend so get to know em. Album: Red Medicine

Olivia Tremor Control, to me this the HUGE Elephant 6 band, and not Neutral Milk Hotel. If you like psychedelic pop of the likes of Beach Boys' Pet sounds and Beatle harmonies, OTM adopt this and get it to a whole new level. Album: Dusk at Cubist Castle

instead of making my own topic: I'd like some reccs on groups/albums from some kinds of music that I have been grooving to but have only scratched the surface of

any of the various manifestations of latin music. whatever you think is really fucking groovy. I like afro-cuban and brazilian type things the best, bossa nova can do it for me if its not soft pussy shit like john pizarelli. in other words I like stuff that is percussion heavy and preferrably with brass

I also would like some raggae/dub/island music. whatever is considered to be the classics or the best in general just to start

The Cardiacs

Yeah, I think it would be a good idea to make this a General Recommendations Thread.

I listened to some of the stuff, I already knew of Fugazi and the Pixies, but the rest Shep recommended were alright. Cardiacs I'm gonna have to give a few more listens.

EDIT:
I guess the main stuff I listen to is metalcore, especially 90's stuff like Converge, Botch, Shai Hulud, Cave-In, etc.
But I'm open for anything.

Get "Lite" if you want so really dope and smart math rock. They don't sing, they make their songs interesting by making playful yet rocking leads. Album: Filmlets

Get "Medications" for more great post-hardcore, the opener and closing songs of the album "Your favorite people all in one place" are one of the best ever in an album (Surprise! and Occupied)

Get "Golden" if you want to know about a jam band fused with jazz and rock, this is the band the TMV drummer (Jon Theodore) was in before joining the afro guys. Album: Apollo Stars

Yeah I'm recommending The Cardiacs to everyone.  If there was one band that I feel everyone needs to get into (for their own good), it would be this band.  The great part is there's actually enough depth to their music to enjoy it on repeated listens!  It can be a little overwhelming on the first listen for some songs though.
Title: Tomohawk recommendation thread
Post by: thecatamites on May 18, 2008, 10:37:11 am
Mission Of Burma are the shit and they pretty much invented the whole emo-core movement that produced Fugazi and ATD-I, so check them out.
Some other bands you should check out are: Pere Ubu, Six Finger Satellite, Hella, and definitely Brainiac if you can find any of their stuff.

Also, a general recommendation topic is a pretty good idea.

Post by: Lars on May 18, 2008, 12:36:10 pm
hey I'm gonna recommend something that's pretty far from anything gw generally recommends and say Ricardo Villalobos' Fabric 36. I've been listening to this cd for some time and rediscovered it today and it really struck me that it's not just my weird taste that's making me like it but it's actually really, really good.

Anyway the cd is a microhouse cd pretty much, it starts very slow but if you let it play gradually you'll discover the wonders of microhouse, hypnotic and microscopic details fading in and out and stuff like foretelling of the vocals to come in the next song by tiny samples. It's pretty much the best cd I've heard in the genre (sorry but Akufen isn't quite as good as Ricardo, although their styles are kinda different).

Here's an example of one of the more defined tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noYEihOLJOw

Basically it's about sparse beats, groovy but also sparse bass lines and a lot of ambient samples.

Also I took the time to check what Pitchfork said and the reviewer there declared him a genious so they like him too ho ho (altho the cd got an 8.7 or something I dunno how good that is).

If you (or anyone else) are interested I'll zoo the entire cd (its 320 kbps). I'd love to share this cd because it's really great but if no one is gonna check it out im not gonna bother.

Villalobos has the strangest Pitchfork history. a review of his album topped their most read reviews for YEARS. I think it was a system glitch, but it made him into the butt of many jokes for my friends and I.

Hello tomohawkjoe.

When i saw this thread i said to myself ''Hell i'll show him some kickass bands'', But when i saw ''No indie'' my list kinda dropped.

So here it goes, i'll try to post up some good bands, and what appears to me as their best album, and my preferred song.

Electronic music

Underworld - Beaucoup Fish (Try the song ''Push Upstairs'')

Überzone - Ideology

Ladytron - 604 (Try the song ''This is our sound'')

Juno Reactor - Labyrinth (Try the song ''Giant'' and ''War Dogs'')

Rock

Blue Oyster Cult - Blue Oyster Cult (Try the song ''Cities on flame with Rock and roll'')
Imaginos (Try the song ''The Siege and Investiture of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle at Weisseria'')

Dinosaur Jr. - Green Mind (Try the song ''Puke+Cry'')

Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm A Machine (Try the song ''Black History Month'')

King's X - King's X (Try the song ''The World Around Me'') (Well, King's X different on every album, so look around a bit)

The (International) Noise Conspiracy - The (International) Noise Conspiracy (Try the song ''New Empire Blues'')

Grand Theft Bus - Flies In The No Fly (Try the song ''Leader'') (A good band even if their song titles suck)

Oceansize - Everyone Into Position (Try the song ''A Homage to a shame'')

Experimental rock

Sigur Ros - Ágætis byrjun (Try the song ''Avalon'')

Sonic Youth - any songs on ''Dirty'' and ''Goo''

The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium (Try the song ''Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt'')

Primus - All albums are remarquable (Although i didn't really like Antipop), but my favorite stays ''Pork Soda'' (Try the song ''Mr. Krinkle'' or ''Hamburger Train'')

Instrumental Rock (No seriously, it's good!)

This Will Destroy You - Young Mountain EP (Try the song ''Grandfather Clock'')

Magyar Posse - Kings Of Time (Try the song ''II'')

Joe Satriani - Surfing with the alien (Try the song ''Satch Boogie'')

Metal

Kyuss - 3 Albums are classic, but ''Welcome to the Sky Valley'' stays my favorite (Try the song ''Whitewater'' and ''Gardenia'')

Candlemass - 13th Sun (Try the song ''Elephant Star'', and make sure your volume is not TOO high.)

Spiritual Beggars -  Ad Astra (Try the song ''Angel of Betrayal'', one of the best riffs i've heard in years.)

Sons Of Butcher - Sons Of Butcher (Try the song ''Fuck The Shit''. N.B. those guys have a TV show, a fusion between serious and comedy metal, still have some kickass riffs)

Once again those are only personnal suggestions, you take whatever you want. If you want a quick look just type that in in YouTube and you should get the song without any problem. I hope you'll like it.

The Postal Service's album "Give Up" is good. It's like Death Cab for Cutie...with an electronica taste, maybe? Anyways, it's good. Just listen to it. I liked Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight." There are a lot of haters but you be the judge and listen to it yourself. My favorite song on there is "Shadow of the Day." Uh, let's see...I recommend a Japanese artist named Susumu Hirasawa. I can't put his music into a category. It's really a genre of it's own, but if I had to, electronica. Just enter his name on Youtube and go crazy. While you're at it, check out his band P-MODEL. Also, Polysics. They are a crazy technopop j-punk band. Again, Youtube. They have millions and jillions of videos on there. I recommend CODE 4, I My Me Mine, and Electric Surfin' Go Go.

I'll make a new topic to sticky k k  :).
