Post by: Nightmare on May 17, 2008, 07:26:50 am
Any favourite quotes/sayings/whatevers from video games?

One of my favourites is from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. In the last confrontation with the , if you escape he says some awesome stuff, but sadly I've forgotten what he says, and the script on GameFAQs doesn't deliver.

Here's another favourite: "Repeat this after me, I will never take on a god again" - Rugal Bernstein.

"So, the little knight has a little sword. But does he know how to play with it?"
Gades from Lufia 1. You could quote pretty much any RPG and it's bound to have one line somewhere that is just hilarious. There's also a ton of fighting games out there that I would love to quote, but the list would be endless.

I would have to say that I enjoy the quotes of the Headless Horseman from the World of Warcraft Hallow's End event.

A personal favorite of mine would be: "Prepare yourselves, the bells have tolled! Shelter your weak, your young and your old! Each of you shall pay the final sum! Cry for mercy; the reckoning has come!"

Anything Ghaleon says in Lunar or Lunar 2, most importantly the voiced cutscenes.  The VA for him (his name is John Truitt, I believe) is simply dripping with badassery.

- Cloud Strife, Final Fantasy VII

Yes, a very cliche game to quote from, but despite the choppy translation, this point really made me FEEL for one of the first (and only) times in video game history.

"If history is to change, let it change! If the world is to be destroyed, so be it! If my fate is to be destroyed... I must simply laugh!! I'm coming, Lavos!" - Magus, Chrono Trigger

I just love this line.  No particular reason.

"Hee hee hee!  What fun is destruction if no precious lives are lost?  Life...Dreams...Hope...Where did they come from?  And where are they headed?  These things...I am going to destroy!" - Kefka, Final Fantasy VI

Just a great line proving how insane Kefka really is.

"I'm saying goodbye...I know it's selfish.  But this is MY story!" - Tidus, Final Fantasy X

I'm one of the few who found Tidus very likeable, and actually cared about the ending...Best Final Fantasy ending by far, in my opinion.

Well, almost all of those were Final Fantasy games...I know I have more, but I'll have to do some deeper thinking.

My country lay within a vast desert. When the sun rose into the sky, a burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it came, the wind carried the same thing... Death. But the winds that blew across the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I coveted that wind, I suppose. --- Ganondorf, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

    * "God" is an image created out of man's insecurities.

    * A small stone may only make a small ripple at first, but someday it will be a wave.

    * You'll never know the feeling of the 'Meager'. You may think you know it, but you've never lived it!

    * "Reality" is far harsher than you can possibly imagine!

    * Two lions are fighting for power after the king dies... Both want to know who their allies are. But, it's hard to read strangers' minds. So, why not kill 'em all and bring in your own people?

    * Governments falsify history only so it favours them. But you can't blame them. Because people always hope for a 'miracle'. Endlessly complaining, lazy, nuisances... that's what the masses really are. Governments give the people what they want... and history repeats itself. Governments might well have taken advantage of their insecurity... but then again, people are satisfied being used... 'God' is nothing but an image created out of their insecurity. It's their fault for knowing they're comfortably numb, and not doing anything about it.

    * You don't understand how hard it is to fulfill your ideals. Even if your ideals are great, they're just dreams if you can't fulfill them! So how can you fulfill them? You need power! That's the politics of the world! I can see it clearly now! You can't fulfill your dreams without power! You say I'm a dog of the church! Go ahead!! I don't care. You can all despise me, but I'll be laughing at the end! You'll all submit to me!

So is this just LOL JRPG or like do you legitimately have a problem with those lines?  Because if I recall he was actually a fairly compelling character because he was a mindless revolutionary who just sort of regurgitated whatever it was that whatever revolutionary group he happened to be involved with at the time told him to think.  So I don't really get your post (the translation is rough in some spots but that's hardly A+ satire material?).

All of the quotes are bad, but the sixth one (governments falsify history...) is absolutely horrible, Maladroithim. All they had to do was add "also: it's okay to be a pedophile" and it would have been the summation of every single one of TheAmazingAtheist's (http://youtube.com/user/TheAmazingAtheist?ob=1) youtube movies. And it's not even that it's the most ridiculous and contrived shit ever, it's that the only people who would ever say something like this are 13 year olds. Here's an anime character hunting for magic stones preaching middle school pseudo-philosophy and there are grown adults that think it is a fucking masterpiece.

I cringed at almost every single one (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Tactics) of these quotes.

Brilliant...

it is realms of arkania - star trail, and as soon as there is a way for non-staffers to submit articles, i am going to write an article about why this is the best game.

i could only find the german version of the intro though :(

the best quotes are in the very beginning of the game and are said by the same guy. "He spoke of an alliance between the dwarves and the elves? What a nonsense. They can no more coexist than fire and water." and "I will pay you a full 1000 ducats for it."

it's because the quotes are clearly put in the game to be thought-provoking and meaningful or whatever, but they don't sound like anything any adult would ever say.  really, they just sound some stupid shit an atheist/anarchist teenager would say.  the.... the foolish masses....

idk man do you just not discriminate against this type of dialogue?  it is VERY CLEARLY poorly done and contrived; i didn't think it would need explaining!

although honestly, i only ever played the psp version of fft, and i don't really recall the dialogue being as bad as all that, so marcus is probably right about the remake/port fixing a lot of the more ridiculous problems with its dialogue.  the faux-medieval thing was irritating in its own right at times, but i think it was better than the alternative.

Well I actually believe exactly the same thing but I had always assumed that Wiegraf was just a tool and that he is sort of like that old guy in Hamlet that's always giving Hamlet all sorts of unsolocited advice and not everyone that sees Hamlet like gets the joke?  Because Wiegraf is always switching ideologies beased on whatever is most convenient at the time and at the end of the game he finally admits that actually the only thing he's cared about is killing the main character.  And his speeches always have the least do to with the situation at hand (a fight to the death) out of most of the long-winded speeches in the game so I don't know.  But yeah it might be more likely that the character was in fact a serious one and was a sucky character instead of an intentionally sucky character because I'm not certain that FFT's writing staff was really capable of poetic justice but that's not how I've always interpreted it personally.

Wiegraf's quotes are pretty ridiculous even in WotL because he is essentially that angsty teenager that complains about everything.  He sees himself as this disillusioned freedom fighter who fights for the common man but in the end all he cares about is revenge for sister (who was a freedom fighter) and dies alone in some underground cave.

But yeah, WotL fixed pretty much every poorly translated LOL-inducing line from the original release like Ovelia's "...Oh god...", my favorite line "Ramza, what did you have...........", and the classic "Defeat Dycedarg's Evil Brother" (Dycedarg WAS the evil brother).  It's pretty sad to note that FFT is pretty much Square's best work in terms of story telling but they still managed to screw it up in the end game where all the Political Intrigue(C) turned into another generic Japanese "KILL GOD BECAUSE GOD IS EVIL (ALWAYS)."

I never read Hamlet so this never even occurred to me, but beyond not reading Hamlet, I think this is also largely because I have a pretty fair amount of doubt that Squaresoft actually hires people who are good enough to write things like that!  I mean it's easy to take a lot of the really awful things they do and WAIT.... IT'S A PARODY/REFERENCE, but considering the garbage they put out, that's probably giving them far too much credit.  At this point I think it's fair to assume they're sincere about most of the awful shit they do (although to be fair, I still think Xenogears was a complete joke).

I'm glad I'm not the only one.  The whole god killer thing made me roll my eyes but once they started talking about SOYLENT GREEN (it's people) I assumed the entire thing was one big joke.  I think I laughed through the second disc more than any video game ever.

For those that don't know, Soylent Green was a sci-fi b-movie staring charleton heston.  Rather than changing the names and referencing the movie, Square literally ripped off the name and exact plot twist essentially recreating the movie's ending in videogame form right down to the discovery that soylent green is in fact PEOPLE.

Quote
"Look behind you! A three-headed monkey!"
-Guybrush Threepwood
The best part about this quote is that it's a running gag the entire game and when you use it against the tribal guys an actual three-headed monkey pops up behind them.  I lol'd for 10 minutes straight.

I just started playing SF64 again because of this and never realized that Zoness (favorite music in the game) had such ridiculous quotes.

Falco -"JEEZ LAWEEZ WHAT IS THAT???"

Slippy: "Hoo! That was TOO close!"

Peppy: "Follow your father's example, Fox!" (whatever the hell that means)

Katt: "We're closing in on them, Falco!" (cue that cute melody as Katt shoots like... 2 badguys then disappears)
Katt: "Take the right one boy, I've got the left!"
Falco: "Katt, what are you doing here???"
Katt: "Is that any way to great a girl?"  (vanishes)
Katt: "I've got somebody on my tail!"
Katt: "Beautiful!  I could kiss you for that!" (dissappears again)

Slippy -"Something's coming from the sea!" (this is funny because the entire level is OCEAN)

Crotchety Old Monkey Boss -"Disrespectful little whelps!  I'll teach ye some respect! Ar ha ha ha har!"

Same Guy - "Oh SHOOT!!" (yes, two exclaimations)

"Why couldn't I fill your dark soul with light?!" -Dante (Devil May Cry) (I lol'd so hard at this)

"Why don't you just shut up?" - B.D. Joe (Crazy Taxi, when a customer complained)

"Where's Gnasty? I'll torch him!" -Spyro (Spyro the Dragon, setting the stage for all Spyro's to come)

Paranoid Guy: "WHOA!"
Megaman.EXE: "What's the matter?"
P.G: "My pants are on fire!!"
MM.EXE: "...You're right! Wow, they really are on fire..."
P.G: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

War of the Lions pretty much fixed everything wrong with the original ps1 release.

I secretly wished they kept the "Blame yourself.  Or God" quote though.

I completely agree that the PSP retranslation is excellent.  Makes me love the game even more.

And, I'm probably the only one, but I like "'Tis your birth or faith that wrong you, not I" better than "Don't blame me.  Blame yourself.  Or God."

Doesn't really matter, though, they both get the job done.

Oh my God, I totally remember this.

Yeah, FFV had some really incredible lines.

Also there was this one terrible quote in FFT when you use some skill (Wave Fist I believe) and I can't remember it at all but it is hilarious. Also at one point they call Gafgarion "Gafgarog" or something like that.

And in Dragon Warrior 7, someone says that they are trying to "gurad" something.

Finally, any line from GOD HAND or No More Heroes.

Yuna: Duck soup!

Rikku: I've reached my limit. Break time!

FFX-2 is so amazing because it tries to be so ridiculous and bad story/character-wise that it winds up being like a really great B movie.

I don't remember any of those quotes but I almost couldn't continue the game after the mission where you have to get a bunch of monkeys to fuck each other.

It was even worse with Rikku giving them goofy prep talks like "Come on, monkey!  DO IT!"

Yeah, if I recall Bruce Campbell tried to sue the people that made Duke Nukem for stealing lines from Evil Dead.

ANYWAY I remember the Pokemon Stadium Announcer had some pretty annoying and sometimes horribly inacurate lines.

(after knocking out the enemy pokemon) "It's not very effective!"
"A ONE HIT WONDER!"
"These are TWO COMPLETELY different Pokemon!"

From Dragon Warrior 1

"Great Hit! Your attack missed!"

Black Knight: Will you flee? How appropriate. Tuck tail and run, child of Gawain! It is what dogs do best, after all. I like how you tremble with fear at the realization that you are no match for me. It suits you.
