Title: Problem with SLUGS
Post by: Mince Wobley on May 18, 2008, 02:35:34 am
I don't know exactly when this started, but my mom has a pepper plant in a pot and I just noticed there are a few dozens of tiny slugs on it, and they just stay on the earth eating rotten leaves and so, but I also found other two larger slugs (they're not big, they're about 1 and a half centimeters long) and I'm afraid they grow and become a real problem (such as eating my seedlings or me stepping or sitting on some of them).

So, how do I exterminate them? Will salt also kill the plants in the pots? Did you ever have any problem with mollusks or any other disgusting creature like them?

Don't slugs only hang around when its really damp and moist? I'd try to keep the area relatively dry.

put a sunlamp over the plants or something.

Maybe but won't the dryness kill the plant?

Let them live; we are all God's creatures.

I don't think so, you could probably look up somewhere on the net at what temperature you could keep the plants at without damaging them but still keep the slugs at bay.

Or you could just bombard everything with so much pesticide you can taste it.

Don't salt them, its a horrible way to die.

The Beer Method - This is a kind hearted killers way of disposing of slugs, but it is pretty labor free. All you do is leave a shallow dish of beer out in the part of your garden where you are having a slug problem. The next morning, you will awake to either a very drunk raccoon or a dish filled with dead slugs. Your chances of finding a dish of dead slugs is higher, but a drunk raccoon is amusing in its own right.

Aten does that really work? Why would the slugs want to drink beer?

I barely get any slugs around my house so I don't know, But in a unrelated story this reminded me of, I was at friends house and he had a slug ont he side of his garadge as long and wide as a large hotdog. He thought it would be funny to put it on a stick and try and toss it on me, I shiver thinking about it.
I don't think salt harms plant's but I would just try buying some slug and snail poison.

They drink it when they get thirsty, pass out from the alcohol, and drown.

I'd totally try out the beer idea just for the hell of it. Then yes, we can burn them.

Also, why don't you just repot the plant, pick out any slugs, and move it away from the garden?

But why would they drink alcohol, this is what I don't understand. It seems as if someone made them with that fatal design flaw on purpose.

Because I don't have a garden! I think the plant or earth probably came with slug eggs and they hatched now.

Anyway, I'll wait for them to grow and I'll try the beer method.

If you get thirsty, you tend to drink whatever you can find. Beer is still a liquid, sooo.

Just my guess.

This reminds me of a youtube video I once saw, has nothing to do with slugs, but snails. Thought it might be interesting to share with you all.

Also there are some herbs (I forget what) that you can burn and use to get rid of snails and slugs, it seems the smoke irratates theres skin and senses and makes them leave. My aunt used it on her garden often i'm sorry that I don't remember what herbs they where if I do remember I'll be sure to PM you.
