If you could describe the United States with ONE WORD, what would that word be?
I have this stupid American Identity speech that I have to give Friday, so I chose the word "Stagnant." I'll probably talk about the rotting away of our political, social, and moral values (from Vietnam on), our economy as yet (As far as I understand it, both political parties have come to embrace the same fiscal budgeting system, maybe with the exception of Republicans now because they are now synonymous with "war" (which is very stupid)), and maybe a few other things (IE I've run out of ideas but I'm not asking for them -- of course not -- any ideas that I will have gotten will be due to your most generous altruism).
Anyways, my class is being especially negative on the subject ("Bigoted," "Stupid," "Imperialistic,") so I'm interested particularly in what people from other countries have to say, too. This'll be fun. Maybe.
-
Obese.
-
Stagnant, or Arrogant, maybe.
It's hard to pick one word, because there isn't one word I could really think of that would symbolize the deep "retro" society we have. We're supposed to be a country of freedom and equality, and yet people still vote for people based on their race or sex, and not what they are saying, you still have hate crimes, neo-nazis, even the KKK...we've not advanced that much in the way of furthering freedom and equality in our own country. Homosexuality is still deeply looked down upon, gay marriage is banned in 47 states, we still have a DA,DT policy in the army which I find to be completely stupid and unequal, etc.
If I knew a word for that, I'd say that.

Consumerland
I've never been there but it seems that in US people are all like "Buy a VCR, buy an atari, buy mac donalds, buy ps3 buy wii BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY". I think that this will continue long after all the things handsome lamb has said are gone, but not too long because this way of life is unsustainable. When it ends people will realize how stupid it was.

We're not the only country who goes BUY BUY BUY man. Japan does it too. It's because we've become higher technologically oriented, and the better and bigger tech comes, the more people are going to impulse buy. The only reason (in my opinion) that its fairly unsustainable over here, is because of cars + gas prices. Look at Japan man, almost no one there has a car. They don't need it! Everyone walks everywhere or if they get bored they pay like 2000 some yen to go to A WHOLE NOTHER FUCKING CITY when they get bored because it's cheap. They could keep doing this because it isn't as expensive for them like it is us with cars. We have way more distance, etc.
I don't really think theres a big problem with BUY BUY BUY, so long as people don't send themselves into debt with it. I know, I know...: people do. Yay credit cards. But that's not the majority (thank god).
-
It's kinda like that inri, Except only gullable people take into the ads. I'm assuming advertisement ANYWHERE is stupid. of course theres alot of gullable idiots out there (You know who you are voting for bush a second time)
America in a short-ish decription
The government screws everyone off, Oil costs alot thank god I use a bike, about 20-40% of everyone you see will be obese considering where your at, The media is god awful except for the small media pointing out just how god awful it is, Were judged by other countries because of what they see on our media so I'm assuming most everyone thinks were all stupid, buy everything, and that we are deeply concerned on what the hell famous actors are doing on sunday, our politics are just childish and it's fairly obvious who's a crook and who isn't yet for some reason the crook is voted for by almost everyone, Liberals thrive here, and we barely care about any other country that doesn't have oil or something of value to us. And on top of that most of us or proud of all that. oh and about 70% of the population is severly retarded.
How would you sum all this up in one word?
America.
I want to move to canada.

most troubles in america are the conclusion of what the US of A always prided itself in. people left to their own devices are stupid (http://www.theinternet.com)

Religous?
Actually, by that I mean overly religous. I suppose there are countries that are worse off in that category, but it seems that it is hard for a lot of people that I have met to accept some science. For instance, I have met many people that are ignorant about evolution and say something like "I DONT COME FROM NO APE". It's pretty aggravating, and even worse when you live in the bible belt.

No, what I meant by unsustainable is that 1) this lifestyle consumes too many natural resources which AREN'T infinite 2) It causes trash to pile up everywhere 3) It also fuxxors things up in countries where consumer goods (like ipods) are made, for example China and India (this is called cost externalizing but I think you know it already).
Japan and South Korea are two countries where buying electronic things like there is no tomorrow is the norm are also the two developed countries with the highest suicide rates in the world. I'm not saying that if you buy a cell phone you're going to commit suicide in 10 hours but all that technology certainly isn't making their lives any more tolerable or happier. And this is why it is a problem. You spend 10 years in school, then more 5 or so years in college, and then you work 16 hours a day for what? So that it changes some mysterious economy numbers? So that your children will be able to live the same life as you? So that you can buy the newest laptop?
This doesn't make sense.
And then there are the unitedstatians, doing exactly the same thing. Working so that they can buy things. As long as you're not in debt that is cool, right? But what about that chinese guy who works 18 hours per day in a factory assembling your ipods? Maybe for him this is better than working in a rice crop.
But how long will that cycle last?
I think that us'ians have too much power on their hands that could be channeled into doing good things but it will take a while before they realize that (hint: buying the new ipod has a higher priority) but I think it will happen someday.

Ok honestly guys. America is a friggin continent. Your contry is called "United States of America". "American" is the standard way to refer to a citizen of the USA, but you can't reffer to the USA as "AMERICA". Damn it.
Edit: I'd reffer to the typical american as ignorant, arrogant, racist, consumist, white trash.
Of course, I'm reffering to the typical, low-class, middle-class american. Not all americans are like this of course, the ones I've met are very respectful and educated people. But still, the general image, that the 'general' american gives, is that one.
Now, as a country? Normally, a disliked one. Getting in stuff that's none of their business, thinking they're like "the world's saviour" or something. Honestly this is driving the world nuts.
At the same time, since they're the most powerful country in economical therms, almost every country has to comercialize in some way with them. :/

Most Americans aren't religious, they just claim to be to keep up appearances.

I think most Americans can be summed up as gullible or ignorant, as in a lot of us think Bush is dumb and the entire Middle East is Iraq. "America sux *eats mcdonalds*"

what
bush is dumb

Yeah....I thought we came from fish that turned into large reptiles then mammals then apes.
Please, now this is going to turn into an Evolution vs. Creationism debate if you keep this up. Oh, and I realize that the two aren't mutually exclusive, but I'm referring to present-state creationism.
-
"man bush is dumb he killed world trade center and killed my boy in iraq. he also wants no health care stupid busht"
This is what many of my peers say. I guess bandwagon could describe Americans, too.
EDIT: also self-destructive

seriously, it's a fucking developed country and it shares pretty much the exact same problems every developed countries share; high consumption of natural resources, high amounts of waste, and slovenly individuals.
it's pretty easy to say the country is fat (because yeah, lots of fat people) but almost all comparisons are made against a country that has like... a quarter of the america's population. you could say the country is wasteful but being a developed industrial nation i can also say that china and japan are wasteful. every country has a state religion (every), every country has zealots (every), every country is fucking prejudice (try asking a chinese national in japan what life is like), every country has crime, every country has *gasp* problems.

Paradoxical.
It prides the symbolic freedom and liberty, yet is built upon denying that.
It provides us with some of the most extreme of both right and left wing views.
A country that has no rich historical culture to dig from (due to basically starting from scratch) yet has provided us with some great entertainment and has become a forefront of so many things.
A baby country yet a powerhouse out of nowhere.
It is modern yet in parts extremely backwards
Progressive yet stale.
Areas of extensive athiesm (eww... plague) and then catholicism/christianity/any other weird voodoo cult

I didn't really want to have negative connotations with my ONE WORD because I don't listen to Greenday and find their music trype, uninspired and attention clawing.

I think the Americans are more negative about their country than the Europeans. Despite having its share of problems, there's no denying that America is still a really great country. Emphasizing some trivial thing, such as the fact that its inhabitants are more obese than those from other countries, would be very ignorant of its status as a First World country. (Maybe you should move to Sierra Leone for a few years.)

High school kids*
Yeah, you're right to an extent. But there's a reason why people criticize America The United States. For all its hype, it's insanely hypocritical. Like you've said before -- it's overstated. We pride ourselves upon democracy and freedom -- yet * A LOT * of people don't vote. K then go back a few decades to Vietnam, when we were fighting 'for democracy' yet we were trying to FORCIBLY IMPOSE it upon a nation which, by popular sovereignty, had chosen communism (not exactly that but the people there really liked the ideas, and fatass America didn't exactly look like the good-guy). We continue to screw over our image, with stuff like the Anti-Ballistic missile system that we wanted in Poland(?) (Russia threatening to point nukes @ Europe, Europe becoming pissed @ us), and the general mud slung at the Iraq war.
Really, I'm proud to be an American. I live in fricking San Diego where the weather never changes and life is pretty good, despite the occasional bitching about housing. But I think that we as a nation should get out of the La-Z-boy and actually think about who we're voting for, what changes we want, and maybe how to make this a better place. And unless there is some mass mentality change, hell -- even Rome fell.
-
nah its a pretty shitty country and the problems are less shit like THEY ARE FAT and more the fact that we have a political system that hinders progress to a ridiculous degree and an incredibly vocal minority convincing everyone that because western Europe has a better educational and health care system, the correct answer is to run in the opposite direction of them as fast as possible.
I guess you could say America is hindered.

I think that stagnant is pretty good

‘Identity is a dream pathetic in its absurdity. You dream of being yourself when you've nothing better to do.' -Jean Baudrillard, 1998
I am such a windbag for posting that.
America is a very unique country compared to the other industralized countries. for one it is really fucking racist. Just see your college cafeteria where blacks sit with blacks and whites sit with whites. America is very reactionary in the sense that still there are people campaigning for creationism, the two party political sphere is shifted to the extreme right, and there is no labor movement. Another thing that is really unique is the focus on language with american brand of liberalism, to an extent that saying nigger, even in a context that isnt offensive, is a DEVIL word, which is ironic because in other languages there is no such thing as EVIL WORDS and generally a lot of countries are less racist than the US. Or the fact that english speaking people give a shit abougender neutrality of words, while turkish is pretty gender neutral and turkey is mad sexist.
There are also great things that are american. American literature is pretty awesome because it has a history of being very experimental, and Jazz is pretty awesome too. People who say that in America there is no worthwhile culture are retarded.

Yeah, unfortunely, the USA has one of the highest if not the highest, uh.... 'wasteful'-ness, per capita, follows its religion much more than most other developed countries, has many many more zealots, is much more prejudiced, and in short, USA at the moment has too many quite obvious problems.
-
Apathetic. The US is one the lowest ranking countries in voter turnout percentage. I think a lot of people don't really try to understand the basics of current events, and don't look any further than whatever sound bites they hear on TV. Even a majority of people identify with the party with which their parents identified, though I don't know if that's true for other countries. Maybe the apathy is exaggerated, because I'm motivated to use this word based off personal experience, but there is very little political discussion that I'm aware of (okay i live in a suburb of Oklahoma maybe that's not fair).
Also, everyone is horrified by words like SOCIALISM, and treat it like it's a bad word. What Marmot said about the labor movement is very true, and is why things like UHC don't exist for the US.
-

No, it really doesn't. People may mark the "Very religious" tab on their surveys, but Americans are really not that religious. Most don't even read the Bible (or other holy scripture) or attend Church (or other place of worship). Americans pay lip service to their religion, they do not adhere to it.
And please, don't claim that Americans are "much more prejudiced" than other developed countries, or that it has more zealots.
-
Dude America is much more religious than other developed countries. Maybe if you live in goddamn Boston you only get to meet harvard flaming liberals. but christian identity is a big part of AMERICANNESS.
-
I know another two words that describe america = A Place. :gwa:
*!Congradulations you've just read the crappiest post Achiro has made today!*
-
I guess it depends on how you define religiosity. I think there are a lot of people who identify with Christianity because it looks good to friends.
If church attendance is any measure, then I think there is a consensus with all the surveys that about 40-50% of Americans attend church weekly. If belief in God is a measure, then it's an overwhelming majority.
-
Dude America is much more religious than other developed countries. Maybe if you live in goddamn Boston you don't feel it. but christian identity is a big part of AMERICANNESS.
Being more religious would imply reading the Bible, going to Church, following what the Bible says. Americans do not do this. They are not religious, they do not adhere to the religion, but they say they do. I live in one of the most conservative, "religious" areas of the US, so I know how these supposedly "religious" people behave. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I'm out drinking at a bar with you on Saturday night and you end up having the premarital relations with a hot (gender or species you feel sexual attraction to), and I know for a fact that you haven't been to church in 7 years and you don't own a Bible, but you say in a survey that you consider yourself a very religious Southern Baptist, I know you're full of shit. Most Americans are full of shit.
But you see, that's what America's all about: Saying one thing while doing the other.
(OH GOD I AM A SOUTH PARK REPUBLICAN HOW DID THIS HAPPEN???)
-
Here is some evidence:
http://pewglobal.org/reports/display.php?ReportID=167
"Religion is much more important to Americans than to people living in other wealthy nations."
The measure used is asking how much of a role religion plays in everyday life, and according to this study, it plays almost double that of what was recorded in Canada. People can still be hypocrits, but that doesn't mean religion is irrelevant.
-

I think I have to agree with you here. While I've said some bad things myself, I really don't know if I could see myself living anywhere else. For instance, the obesity and religion problems are mainly problems with the South, though not neccessarily exclusively. I mean, there are still plenty of good things about the country. For instance, it's a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, and you shouldn't ever run out of things to do here, either.

Dying
another word I would use to describe America.
Our politicians are killing it.
-
USA = the nation of consumption
-
Most Americans aren't religious, they just claim to be to keep up appearances.
Well, I didn't mean it as in the "Go to church every Sunday, pray often" sort of bunch. Now, take into mind that I'm not antagonizing every American. Also, I realize that there are more religous countries out there(Nigeria is the most religous country in the world.) Though, it's a bit disturbing how little people tend to accept scientific fact as an inherent part to understanding our universe, and how it's an integral part to the human reasoning of our existance. I haven't met many people that accept religion in it's quintessential form, and the Bible verbatim, but they are certainly out there. It's been pretty much proven that the United States accepts evolution much less than other countries. It's one thing to believe it, and quite another to shove it down someones throat(which I've seen plenty of.) I think I see the worst side of the spectrum living in the bible belt.
-

most people are full of shit. I lived in mexico and now i am living in the US, and yes mexico is extremely catholic but even there humans are hypocrits not dickless flying cherubs. So yeah, it doesnt matter if they dont read the bible, what matters is how faitfhful they are, not if they are SINLESS MACHINES OF RELIGIOSITY.

At least find the latest study (http://religions.pewforum.org/reports). Note what it says about defining religious affiliation.
Well, I didn't mean it as in the "Go to church every Sunday, pray often" sort of bunch.
Yeah, I see what you mean! Why should actually being religious have anything to do with being religious?
So yeah, it doesnt matter if they dont read the bible, what matters is how faitfhful they are, not if they are SINLESS MACHINES OF RELIGIOSITY.
But most Americans aren't faithful, that's sort of the point, Jesus H. Christ man pay attention. Seriously, how can they be faithful if they go out and do EVERYTHING THAT THEIR RELIGION IS AGAINST ON A REGULAR BASIS?
-
Um, the study I posted compares religiosity with other countries. That is the latest study that answers that particular question. This study breaks down the various religions and religious sects throughout the US, which has nothing to do with what we're actually talking about.
edit, I don't understand your point about the religious affiliation. It's saying that it's diverse, yes, but it's also saying that it's fluid as well. It seems like you're placing a very rigid definition of what religiosity is, which is: READ BIBLE, GO TO CHURCH, BE ANGELIC, etc.
also why are you yelling
-
Yeah, I see what you mean! Why should actually being religious have anything to do with being religious?
I shouldn't have used the word "religous", but what I wanted to actually say falls somewhat close in the same category. By this, I mean people that I've met and observed seem to adhere too much to religous dogma as opposed other things that are inherent to human reason and, logically, makes a lot more sense.

I hope more people read this and took it to heart than skimmed over it. This is the truest post I've read in a long time. The U.S. might be a popular punching bag but all the things we are insulted for is common among every developed nation. And all of these "flaws" that people believ we have doesn't keep hundreds of thousands of people from moving here every year to take part in the "American Dream".
Yeah that's a good two words to describe us. "Punching Bag".

Well its just that every country in earth has that problem, except in differing degree. I mean everybody would consider Mexico extremely religious however it is also popular here to buy a prostitute for BIRTHDAY GIFT and other sorts of premarital drunken sex, yet at the end of the day there is Virgin of Guadalupe and Cristo Rey . So again, you are just proving that normal people arent dickless cherubs and do indulge in their carnal pleasures. So yeah, if we applied your standards there wouldnt be such thing as a very religious country.

One word to sum up America?
hawaiichair (http://www.hawaiichair.com/)

Well, one thing I can say is that the US is an enormous country and thus quite unique compared to most of the other developed countries.
Usually the US are blamed for many things which represent the general ideology of only part of the country. But people forget that in these times, US culture has influenced the (especially western) world SO much is not even funny.
I personally disslike many things of the US - the fact that so much of the culture and general knowledge is based on the showbiz; that it is the developed country with the highest rate of gun murder; all the wars that they have provoked with intentions clearly not adherent with their maxims; etc... But on the other side there are so many things about the US I love, for example:
- Films: Thanks to the film industry in the US we get to see ridiculous amounts of films from which there are quite a few which surpass mediocrity, and that's good (if you like films of course)
- Music: No one can object that the US has produced some of the best music in the world, in many genres, and... well, I won't start naming cus I'd take the whole post.
- Arthur Miller: Awesomeness incarnated (or however u spell that). He wrote probably the two best plays ever (not rle... but amongst the ones I like the most): The Death of a Salesman and A View from the Bridge.
- Comics: I wouldn't be here without comics
- New York: I must say that it is in the top ten in my list of awesomest cities of the world.
And yeah...many other things which are awesome from the States that people tend to forget. I personally think that I'll apply for one of the Biggies when I do my Ph.D. cus I believe I'd quite enjoy living in New England or maybe some place with nice weather like San Francisco (?)...

One word for America?
Home.

Corporation.
Just a massive corporation.
All the people living in the USA are workers in the company called the US Government.

It's where I keep all my stuff.

hey how about you not just post a one word reply. at least put some effort in to it.

One thing I like about the US is how children can die for their country before they can legally drink. Also...
Elephantine.
The US of A is big. Really, really, REALLY big. As in WAY big. Capital B Big. It's also kinda backwards and inconsiderate, but 'big' really captures what the US is all about, I think. I would have called it big, but you don't get to call something 'elephantine' very often so there. It's elephantine.

That's a pretty spiffy word, elephantine. I'll have to use it sometime. We do buzzwords as a joke in our English essays; maybe I'll slip it in there. Well, I would if school hadn't ended.
Me? I think people are really too negative all of the time. I'm supposed to be living in a ridiculously conservative, badly educated, wasteful state, but it's still preferable to most places I can think of living. In fact, it's pretty gosh-darned nice. I've been in different parts of the world, in Europe and in the industrialized parts of Africa, and I still prefer the U.S. Mostly because Europe is freakin' expensive and Africa has the most corrupt governments ever. But the thing about freedom in America is that it gives us the power to screw up, but also gives us the ability to change it. I think that's pretty cool.
Also, I don't know why people make such a big deal when we call it America. It's not like we're ignoring the other countries; we just have freaking AMERICA in our name. When Mexico becomes the "Mexico-America", or Canada becomes "North America's United Regions of Canada" or whatever, sure, you can have a claim to the name, too. It's just easier to say "Americans" rather than "United States of Americans", is all. The use of America just happens to follow along with that.
Personally, for a word to describe the United States, I'd use... accountable? Or some synonym that makes more sense. We're not responsible for all of the world's problems, and we're certainly not as bad as we're made out to be, but in terms of scapegoats, I'd say that we're the easiest country to blame.
I'd also agree with opportunity. I think it's pretty scary how in some countries you have to take a test as a kid that will decide the rest of your life for you. It's so easy here to get a great education here at a minimal price, as long as you actually work toward your goals. It's so ridiculously achievable that it's a bit frightening.

I think it's pretty scary how in your country where you live will decide what school you go to. Oh, and can you get into university for less than 4000 dollars a year (like me)?

I don't understand, isn't that how it is pretty much supposed to be? Unless you are talking about tertiary education, which where you live doesn't neccessarily govern where you go to school. Though, it's usually much more economical.

What do you mean, supposed to be? Here in the Netherlands, you just pick a school, any school. Nobody but your parents care whether you have to travel for hours to get there. There are usually several nearby 'middle schools', often more that one per city, offering several levels of education. I had to cycle for half an hour to school and back again every day (which by the way is about the norm for living in a rural area). A lot of kids go to an elementary school in a different town every when there's one in their own village. If I was forced to take the closest middle school I'd be flipping burgers by now. There's a test at the end of elementary school to determine which level of middle school education is most suited to you, but you can ignore it if you want.

I guess I am too accustomed to my parents forcing me to go to a close school, and I honestly hate going to where I go. It's a pretty shitty school, but I don't have much of a choice. I can walk about .4 km down the road, and see my school, so it's really close to where I live.

Man, I can go to university for FREE. And there's magnet/IB programs to enter if you want. You're not limited to your geographical options in any way. Provided you want to drive (just like the situation you describe) to get to your destination, there's really no problem.
