Title: Going to Canada
Post by: Von Woofen on May 24, 2008, 12:49:23 pm
I'm taking a trip up to Canada this summer and I'm wondering where is a good place to visit. I live in PA so I think we are planning on going to Quebec because it's close and from what I understand it is one of the providences where the drinking age is 18. Also, does anyone know if you need a passport to get across the border? Because I have heard that you do, that you only need a birth certificate and a driver's license, and that you only need a passport to get back into the US.

Wow, public transportation? That's a really good selling point of a place.

You don't need a passport to get across the border from either side, just a proof of citizenship with photo and your birth certificate. I actually got across with only my medical insurance card (which needs citizenship in Canada seeing as how it's a government thing here) when going to Philly last fall.

I'd say visit both "national" capitals (Ottawa and Quebec). They're full of culture, old shit and museums, and both have REALLY good nightlifes. Ottawa's also got the Byward market as well as being one of the craziest cities in the country and it's just a blast to walk around it and check out shit. It's also easy to go anywhere because it prides itself on its crazy fucking bus service that seriously goes everywhere every 5 minutes, so it's really easy to navigate around town to go from one point to another.

I don't think it's worth it coming to Toronto unless you like dance clubs and are looking for a pretty good nightlife.  There's pretty much not a lot you can do here other than..sightseeing, I guess, but even that's not that interesting.  If you want gorgeous scenery I suggest you pay a visit to the mountains in British Columbia, and some of the maritime provinces (far east). If you want to  party and have lots of fun, go to Montreal :) (yes, the legal drinking age is 18)

I also live in Toronto (oh god otomon lives here?) and there is a lot to do here. Public transportation is a pretty big deal when you are visiting a place, as it lets you get around more quickly! There is lots to do here. I am not much of a culture buff, but I know of several museums and other things like that, so they can't be too hard to find. Unlike Ottawa Toronto isn't a fucking ghost town, so that might be a big plus. They speak French in Quebec (if that wasn't obvious) which could seriously hamper your enjoyment of the place (not being able to understand anything, that is) but there is a lot of history there and all of the fast food will serve you in English, pretty much!

Ontario's drinking age is 19. Toronto has about seven hundred clubs all right next to each other in the trendy part of town. What exactly are you looking for, anyways? Also, it's always best to carry a passport when going to foreign countries, no matter how friendly. It will prevent a lot of problems!

edit: FlowerPower, he lives in PA and wants to take a roadtrip, dude! Why would he drive to the West coast of Canada when the US also has a West coast which is mighty fine? :hmm: Toronto has many museums and art galleries! Also the film festival is coming soon!

Oh I didn't know that...I'm just assuming. I guess you could talk about the art galleries but they don't really interest me too much, if you do come to Toronto though, check out the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum), they reconstructed part of the building and it looks awesome ().
and isn't the film festival in September, though?

Also, if you're going to go to Toronto there's a lot of festivals and stuff that go on in the summer so if you know your timeframe you could check out what's coming, last year there were a lot of cultural festivals and plenty of free concerts which is always awesome!

Don't worry about French in Montreal, most places can speak English, can't speak for the rest of Quebec, though.

As long as you stay inside Montreal, there's no trouble being served in English. But you're going to have trouble anywhere outside the city.

July 18-20 is the GW meet in London, Ontario, in case you're interested. It's only a couple hours outside of Toronto.

I've never been to Montreal so I can't speak on its tourist attractions and such but I'm sure it's a wonderful place to visit. Personally, I'd recommend Niagra Falls. It's WAY closer to you than Montreal and the falls are amazing to look at.

You'd asked about passports and got an answer but I think it needs a bit of clarification. If you aren't an American citizen but you reside in the US then you will need a passport to travel back and forth. If you plan on flying then you will also need a passport. But, as it sounds like you're driving, all you'll need is proof of citizenship (either your birth certificate or citizenship card) and a valid piece of government issued photo ID (driver's license).

@FlowerPower - We are going up on June 14th or 15th and staying basically until we only have enough money to get back.

@Mamamack - I went to Niagra with my family once. I didn't like it too much. It was so touristy and over-crowded and stuff. The falls were pretty awesome though.

Also yeah, the west coast is pretty out of the question. Would take too much time and money and stuff. Also I didn't know that Quebec speaks only French. That is good to know.

There's a few parts of Montreal that are extremely french though but I doubt he'll go in those places. In the province of Quebec unless you speak french you should stay in Montreal. If you do speak french go to Quebec too. Montreal has a crapload of things you can do depending on your interests and we also have a lot of nightclubs (even alternative ones etc). It's really a cool city to be honest, some of the people suck a lot but it's still pretty awesome.

Uhh, when I went to Quebec most of the people there spoke English without problems. The only thing we did notice is that they were a little more rude to us because we didn't speak French (or didn't speak it very well). You shouldn't have any problems in any of the larger cities in Quebec even if you don't know ANY French.

The rumors are true and sorta false outside the downtown area, its pretty filthy, like from a far distance you can see so much mist... but outside its pretty clean... for the most part anyway.

Are you drunk, FlowerPower? That billion-dollar monstrosity on the side of the ROM looks like shit and serves absolutely no purpose (since it is not structurally sound enough to support more than a couple people walking in it) and was a complete failure from an architectural and financial standpoint. It also destroyed the ye olden vibe of the ROM (which is the vibe museums are supposed to have). It looks like someone crashed a really ugly alien spaceship into the building.

Also the Jewish Film Festival and one or two others are here in summer I am pretty sure.

I live in East York (which is the heart of the city!) and am capable of throwing together grammatically sound sentences so I would be careful about claiming you are a better Torontonian than I am (yes, that is what they call us)!

Dude, the larger cities in Quebec are pretty much Montreal and Quebec City. In Quebec City you will not get served in english trust me on that one. A lot of people will be able to speak english but they might be rude to you if you can't speak french at all (the city is EXTREMELY nationalist). In Montreal you won't have any problems whatsoever though. Unless you go into a few places that are mostly residential anyways so...

If you stick to the West Island and the more touristic area there's no trouble.

Jeez... am I the only guy that thinks the West-Island is rather french? In general it is more english but if you go to Ile-Bizard and a lot of places in Pierrefond and even more towards the west it's so very very french.

Catslacks, I'm actually really surprised you were served in english everywhere in Quebec City. I've seen a lot of places where they would actually throw you out if you don't speak french (which I think is completely ridiculous).

Well by everywhere I mean everywhere you would be likely to find yourself. Granted most of the locations we went to were touristic because we didn't really travel to Quebec City to buy bubble gum. The only trouble we did have was at a restaurant where our waiter was pretty rude and ended the meal with "You know, here in Quebec we leave tips." in a condescending tone before we could even get out of our seats. Needless to say we didn't leave a tip. Oh, and nobody would break a twenty for us. Anywhere. Ever.

I noticed that many Canadians are very proud of their Canadianness.  I was working, and a man in dreadlocks came up to me and said this:

"Hi.  I'm looking for a laptop.  I'm from Canada.  I want something that's not real expensive, because all I'll be doing is watching Youtube videos and checking e-mail.  And don't mess with me, eh, because I'm from Canada."

Who wouldn't be proud to be Canadian? I mean the government takes away 15% from everything you buy,you get free "health-care" which is really a lie cause they only "cover" useless stuff that your likely never to get,but when it comes to stuff that matters you have to pay a huge amount of money cause of the fucking tax

Here is an example:

Me:"Oh no I got cancer in my anus! No problem Ill just bust out my health card and get an operation!"
Goverment:"We are sorry we dont cover that, but you can give us a sample of your pee tougth so we give you some bullshit test that you can probably do yourself..."
Me:"Fuck..."

Oh and lets not forget 40% of the country is useless/unhabitable and we got some asshole province that wants to become its own country just cause they want to have french in their game manuals, delaying the realease of good games even more!

Oh oh! Almost forgot! In Canada if you touch a girl below the age of 18 your a pedophile! and if she is above 18 your a rapist!

Fucking eh!

Ok, so we've decided to go to Montreal. We all have birth certificates and drivers license if not a passport. Now my question is, will they let us get a hotel room with just a US id and some cash?

EDIT: Also, if there is anywhere particularly awesome in Montreal let me know, and also what kind of Canadian cigarettes are good?

You made the wrong choice my friend. Oh and yeah you can stay in a hotel with cash and us id...but mostly because of the cash.
Only good thing I know bout Montreal is that its so easy to purchase alcoholic beverages over there not so easy here in Toronto...
