Title: General Recommendation Thread
Post by: ThugTears666 on May 27, 2008, 12:50:18 am
HEY GUYS

Here is a new recommendation thread with a new concept.

This topic is where someone will post if they want to be recommended bands from a specific genre.

No one wants to read lists of your favourite bands so only post here if you want to know about a certain genre or band and then only post if you are recommending that person some good bands from that genre which will help them get into it.

Get it? Cool I'll go first cause I legimately want to know about some good classic progressive rock, I'd like to hear some cool concept albums also (any concept albums like prog, rap whatever), please don't forget to actually explain why these are any good! :)

To solve any confusion with multiple recommendations make sure you either bold what you want to be recommended or who you are recommending for.

uh, what have you heard.

because you know just listen to some early Genesis if you haven't.

If its not too much work it might be a good idea to have people bold what genre the music they are recommending is and then just look through and edit the first post with Blue Grass Recommendations: x, y, z or whatever

nah I think that might be too much work.

like first of all BLUE GRASS itself contains so much, and then if you stretch that to punk you've got McClusky punk and Black Flag punk and all these genres and time periods and then eventually the metal guys will show up and be like ANARCHOSYMPHONIC PROG PLEASE.

imho just have people ask WHO SOUNDS LIKE X?

Man, can you clear up the Genesis Part. For almost a year now, I've been meaning to check out Genesis, but I always hear, "Heh Only listen to when they had ______ as the singer" and I always forget the name.

Peter Gabriel is the name.

Check out the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, their classic album concept album about a Puerto Rican druggie who dies and falls in a vagina where he meets his brother, Selling England By the Pound, and Foxtrot. If you want post-Gabriel, A Trick of the Tail is good.

Well I only meant a basis of what the people asked for so if someone comes in asking for anarchosymphonic prog then it would just be "Hey here are all the responses to this post." Which admittedly is kind of a lot to ask from one person, but I was just throwing the idea out there. It just seems to me that if a couple people make requests real close together the answers that follow will be a jumble of a different genres, but it probably wont be that bad.

So if there are a few recommendation requests. The person needs to either bold what they want recommended or who they are recommending for.

Ok so I am requesting minimalistic techno

I dont' want minimalistic house or similar genres (as Akufen & Ricardo Vil.) since i've already heard enough of that to for now fullfill my needs, but I'm really interested in minimalistic techno genres that have ties to the old detroit scene or the deep techno genre. Anyone?

and yeah genesis is in the petting zoo?

Maybe try Deep Forest

I remember hearing a few songs by them when I was younger but I'm not too sure what they are like overall.

The only minimalistic techno band I've listened to (or heard of, for that matter) is Junior Boys. This song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiI-3uRfaSc) was the only [slightly] good one I could find on Youtube and it's not very techno-like, but whatever.
EDIT: I see they've got The Equalizer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNsxD8Rc5RA), but this live video doesn't sound as minimalistic as the album version.

actually i withdraw my minimalistic techno.

what I'm really looking for is tech house

(which is more or less a sparse mix of techno and house)

I have a bit to say on minimal tech.

The major ones to go for are Claude VonStroke (any remixes or productions by him tend to be perfect), SCI-9, Dubfire, Popof and Vincent Markowski (The Madness Of Moths is an absolute tune, so are some of his remixes)
Other ones that aren't as good but still are very good - Audion, Legowelt, Steve Bug, James Holden, Deadmau5 (I think loads of his stuff is on the new GTA soundtrack but I don't have it so I can't say))

For tech house I can't say much but I would suggest Brodinski, particularly Bad Runner which is one of the best pieces of electronic music ever. His solo remixes are really good too but he often does remixes with Yuksek - they usually go more electro and tend to remix more vocal-based house, which isn't bad but not really in the vein of what you're looking for. Also listen to Paul Woolford Presents Bobby Peru because that's doing lots to merge tech house with guitars. The Count & Sinden do a lot of good stuff too but their sound changes a fair bit between productions so it's hit and miss with them.

Also listen to Erol Alkan's Bugged Out! mix, it's pretty old now but it is amazing.

Deep Forest as mentioned earlier.  Two guys from France make world music with electronic instruments.  Vocals in lots of different languages.

Dead Can Dance - Not technically considered world, but they use many different instruments and also sing in different languages as well as English.

Cusco - Described as New Age and they are but they make lots of music with flutes and stuff.  They are tight.

You could also like The Neon Handshake by Hell Is for Heroes, it got some neat songs. Also try out Bear vs. Shark and Reuben and this is a bit far-fetched but you might like Biffy Clyro too.

we were talking about this shit on irc just now and heres a request..

downtempo/chillout/trip-hop/whatfuckingeveridontlikegenrenames

I can't really give much names because I'm not all that familiar with the genre but for example, I love Saltillo (http://www.myspace.com/saltillo), especially songs like Giving In on their myspace. Some other bands I have heard are Massive Attack (not all that familiar with them though), Portishead, Air, The Cinematic Orchestra, Björk, Boards of Canada, Röyksopp and so on. Seriously, I am not really looking for one specific kind of stuff here. Just something chill would be nice, I like a lot of electronica too so that's fine, plus it can be jazzy or even stuff like nick drake (relaxing and very nice) I DON'T REALLY CARE GIVE ME GOOD MUZAKS.

what i dont want is techno/house/whatever unless it's really good and actually has some personality. there's plenty of ambient music i like and some dnb too.

You mentioned Massive Attack but said you weren't that familiar with them. In my opinion they're the best place to start. Their two most popular albums are Blue Lines and Mezzanine. Blue Lines is more of a Jazzy Hip-Hop album. There's even some rapping and spoken word in a few of the tracks. The most popular song on the album is some kind of dance record though. Mezzanine is more of a guitar/rock album, and it mixes that with different singers, mostly this reggae guy? At least I think that's what he is...

This is the title song Blue Lines. (my fav)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNUm0sxbjD0

This is the most popular song from Blue Lines Unfinished Symphony.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGYRvIOZfZ8&feature=related

As for Mezzanine, here's my favorite song (first one) Angel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygw2zmEVsvc&feature=related

And here is what could be the most popular song Teardrop. I think it's the title song for that TV show "House."

Not the most relaxing type of music but I'd recommend Mylo's album Destroy Rock & Roll to anyone interested in electronica.

Drop The Pressure (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdpK948bxR4) - It's not just the over-the-top nature of the song that makes it good. (You'll see what I mean)
Need You Tonite (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAQ-UrcsBi0) - Mylo does chill-out stuff too I guess. Valley and the Dolls and Sunworshipper are also must-listens.
Zenophile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjGEV0pqNvs) - It's just amazing.
Rikki (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6bf7Js-ShA) - I'm taking a gamble here but what the hell. Dance-y stuff.

I'd really just recommend you listen to the whole album because it has a diverse range of electronic music.
