Title: comics and makeup... it's a curse
Post by: local_dunce on May 28, 2008, 10:07:56 pm
This isn't a conspiracy theory topic or anything other than weird coincidences that I thought were pretty neat. We're chatting about it on IRC and I think it's neat enough to go ahead and make a topic.

I was watching some late night TV last night and I flicked onto the film "The Crow" which I thought was surprisingly good considering the subject matter/comic book adaptation and death in the film. I mean before the crow the best comic book adaptation was probably the batman films with Michael Keaton.

Anyway I was looking REALLY HARD to see if I could see the point in time that Brandon got shot, to see if I could see stunt doubles or strange cutting techniques and I'm impressed with the job they did on cutting that film. But it struck me as pretty odd that in the film, brandon lee looks exactly like heath ledger. I mean maybe it is the shaggy hair and makeup but I think it was pretty uncanny. So I brought this up in passing on IRC. OH YEAH and they both died making a movie (so what it happens all the time.) Still, it's getting a bit coincidental.

So at this point I take the time to mention that they look almost identical and both died making a movie that were also both comic book adaptations. At which point liman pops up to tell us all that they were both 28 years old when they died.

So the point of this topic is for me to warn you guys not to make movies involving makeup, based on comic books when you are 28 years old. What a coincidence huh.

To give this topic some other level of credibility I'd like to ask what you guys think of comic book adaptation movies. I mean I did really like the Tim Burton/Keaton batman movies and I did like the crow a lot, but recently I've been getting more and more annoyed with them. Let's be honest Spiderman 3 was ridiculous.

But I'm holding out high hopes for... (http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/)

OKAY, Film coincidences, comic book adaptations past and present. There's enough discussion here to last us a lifetime...

I can only agree.
To you filmmakers out there: Skip any project while you're 28 even if you're just shooting a commercial as Ronald McDonald.

As for the comic book adaptions: I'm starting to get tired of the amount of comic book they spit out several times each year now. The faster they come, the worse they get. I liked Spider-man 1 & 2 and X-men 2 but everything afterwards is pretty bad with the exception of Batman Begins (which is my favorite adaption). Comic book adaptions were unique around 2001 for me. The only ones I could mention were probably Batman and Superman. With Spider-man setting new bars for comic book adaptions and proved that people of all ages like them, Hollywood & Marvel/DC decided to shake hands and spit out everything that could.

These films aren't unique anymore, in fact I immediately see them as B-movies these days because the last bunch have been pretty bad and they get made faster than a 1 million dollar budget movie. Hollywood along with Marvel etc. need to realize that not every single comic book needs to be made into a film.

So yeah, after The Dark Knight I don't mind waiting 5-6 years for another comic book film.

The Watchmen movie is pretty much doomed. I mean, those who have read it will be dissapointed because there's no real way they can make a movie as intricate and developed as the book and those who haven't read it will think "R rated, 3 hour superhero movie with no big name actors? I'm not paying 7 bucks to see that."

did all of you guys suddenly forget iron man what's happening here?

Anyways, comic book movies are pretty old hat, they've just gotten popular suddenly because film techniques are now capable of the insane shit you see in them.  I can name a couple of smaller comic book movies in the past including the original Punisher, Phantom, Flash Gordon, Ghost World, Crumb, American Splendor, and the crappy tv Nick Fury.

Man The Punisher was freaking terrible, as was Flash Gordon, Phantom and Nick Fury. I did really enjoy Ghost World and I guess of all of them Phantom was not that bad but I mean. Comic Book adapts have been around for a long time. I mean SUEPERMAN and BATMAN TV shows and stuff have always been around, but they aren't anything spectacular.

I've never been a huge fan of SUPERHEROES though. Not for a while at least, or not unless it is done really well.

I really want to see it but I'm too cheap to pay $15 to see it and I can only find cam rips so :[

I just wish they'd have made the watchmen film good. I don't read a lot of non-web comics but of the few I've read it's the only one I've really liked.

I can't think of a superhero themed film that I've actually enjoyed offhand (although to be fair I don't actively go out to watch them). The first two Spiderman films are hilariously dire (most people seem suprised to hear that) and I haven't seen Batman Begins.

However, I'm really looking forward to The Dark Knight, the trailers look incredible, Heath Ledger looks amazing and it's the first superhero film I can't wait to watch.

wait what do you mean brandon lee and heath ledger died while making films? brandon lee died on set filming a movie, but heath ledger died in his apartment from acute drug intoxication... he just happened to be filming a movie at the time. not really the same thing.

It wasn't even a major point, the most coincidental stuff was that they both looked exactly the same and they were both 28 and tehy were both dressed up in makeup. I'm not trying to pull some INTERNET CONSPIRACY shit here, I just thought it was weird. People die while making films all the time.

I may be drunk but...

Technically Brandon Lee died on the same weekday as Heath Ledger. Lee was shot on a Tuesday but the doctors kept him alive for as long as possible with their machines so he didn't pass away until Wednesday.

So yeah, do not make movies involving makeup, based on comic books when you are 28 years old... especially not on a tuesday. Take the day off in that case.
