Title: Good webhost?
Post by: Bravo on May 29, 2008, 02:30:09 am
Hey, I'm looking for a website host that's reliable and has fast speeds for loading pictures and whatnot. I've used Bravenet in the past, but they have horrible loading speeds. I don't need too much space (like 200MB is more than enough) but I do need a decent amount of bandwidth per day.

Also, not as important, but is there a recommended domain name service I should use? In the past I've used yahoo and bravenet.

I hear godaddy is a pretty popular choice for the frugal types.

FREE:
www.quotaless.com
www.oxyhost.com
www.stonerocket.net (the best.. ruby, python, php, cpanel, 5gb bandwidth, cron jobs, cgi, request your own features, i guess you could request a CMS install, etc... )

What is your budget?
I'd go for around or below $20 a month. Preferably $10 to $15.

And while a free host would be awesome, ( :fogetrockon:) I can't have ads. Popup or otherwise.

oh.. stonerocket doesn't force ads.. You will only be forced with adds of your choic(text ad is the smallest) if you also subscribe to their free .info domain...

what about a normal .com domain? you get no ads? how can they afford to do that?

they allow you to have your own domain name.. buy you buy the domain name. the only free domain they give is .info..
I can prove it. my website is .info hosted at SR

I don't know how they do it.. but it works so I don't care

Well if you want quality paid shared hosting then I suggest Web Faction (http://webfaction.com/) or Media Temple (http://mediatemple.net). They maybe a bit out of your price range and/or technical understanding of hosting but feel free to check them out.

Hit up leafo and see if he can get ya something, he's given me 2 sites, completely free, no pop ups or anything at all.

I'd suggest you www.surpasshosting.com
It's shared hosting but in my experience works extremely well...

Also, 200gb and 2000GB transfer a month.

Costs $6/month I think.

I use www.3ix.com.  It's from $1 a month with 10gb space, 20gb bandwidth.  Never had a problem with it and has pretty much everything you need.  Also has a ton of installable website programs but I've never tried them out.

this one looks interesting. how is the speed? just by scrolling through your site it looks like it loads fast but I didn't see any 2meg sized pictures or anything.
My biggest question is do I have to have that 3ix button on my site as you do? And is the domain ordering from that site good?

yeah 3ix looks interesting... $8/month for 500gb space and unlimited bandwidth? if you dont have to use that logo that's a great deal.

The button does not have to be there.  It is on my site because there offer a referral service thing.  As for the speed, uploads and downloads are fast - i've got a bunch of personal images on there that were large and uploaded and downloaded at decent speeds.  The domain ordering was fine, took a few days for the DNS to update (obviously).

@grape drink: It says unlimited but I imagine that there is a cap somewhere.  No such thing as unlimited. :)

Your welcome.  Funny thing is, I'm pretty sure I found that site from a topic that used to be here that listed tons of webhosts.  What happened to that topic anyway?

Hmm... The problem with webhosts is reliance, I think most everyone will agree on this...
While 3ix looks extremely nice, almost too good to be true, it just might!

I mean, they seem to be new (And have started this year)... Who can say they'll not go bankrupt tomorrow? God knows I've seen it happen. That's the reason I stick to Surpass... Been using their services for about 3 years now.

There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. If you want reliability and performance for hosting I would highly recommend media temple (http://http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/) for $20 a month. The price is high because they use what they call a "grid service" and they are very very reliable. If you can afford $20/month you really should check them out.  :)

Holy snap. 3ix looks amazing. Especially for people like me who are incredibly cheap and just need a casual website. I will definitely be checking that out when I get all my stuff together.
