Title: Recommend please and also talk about mind game
Post by: big ass skelly on May 30, 2008, 07:55:36 pm
Okay so every six months or maybe less frequently I have a desire to watch anime.

If I was going to watch something that was:

a series, shorter than 24023409234 episodes,
not written by children,
not drawn in a way specifically designed to piss of any right-thinking person,
not awfully cliche-ridden (no schoolgirls-but-ninjas-on-their-lunch-break) and
clever enough to make me think at least once an episode

what would I be watching? Is there any anime like this?

thanks

What kind of anime do you like? What's some of your favorite series?

Fucking. I don't know, I don't really watch enough to have those kinds of opinions. The last time I was inthe mood to watch some I asked DS and he got me to watch death note which I actually kind of enjoyed for a while (got shitty pretty fast)

I think the time before that I watched furi kuri which was okay because it was short and something I THINK was called gate keepers which was the most appalling trash.

I can't give you much beyond that sorry.

I'm currently watching this OVA called Freedom which is 7 episodes long. Only 6 subbed so far but the 7 should be coming in the near future as the raw is out.

It's set in the future n a city on the moon were the citizens believe the earth to be pretty much ruined and inhabitable because of radiation but one day the main character sees an object falling down on the moon and in it is a picture with the writing "we're fine, is there anyone out there". Then he sets out to find the truth about earth...........

pretty short overall wellproduced. Obvious influences from Akira both in art and a little in setting, features kids on fast illegal-ish motocycles too.

hey

don't listen to these guys okay

actually freedom looks sort of cool but did you ever see kemonozume?  bort told me about it, though i think he only watched a couple episodes of it, but anyway it's made by the guy who made mindgame, which i assume you've seen (if you haven't just go get this instead).  it's just this 13-episode series and it is VERY VERY GOOD as far as anime goes, and actually gets pretty ridiculous/trippy at the end, which seems like it's the only way any anime ever has a good ending.  it's got a pretty interesting/atypical visual aesthetic, too, which is also cool.  as far as tone goes i'd say it's fairly mature for what it is.  it doesn't watch like naruto or anything, at least.

so yeah watch that.

I haven't seen or actually even heard of mind game. I guess I'm out of the animeloop

It sounds pretty interesting though so I'll start there, thanks

ohhhh man then forget kemonozume (actually dont do that just watch it after mindgame) because mindgame is easily just like the BEST THING japan will probably ever make.  it might be on the zoo, but if it's not i still have it so i can upload it for you.  visually and thematically and even in terms of the writing/dialogue/plotting it is just a huge step above pretty much every other anime ever.

Idk, maybe you could try Samurai Champloo. It's not  really that japanese, if you catch my drift. It's a pretty good Samurai beat 'em up with a story. Check out the first couple of episodes and see if you like them. You should be able to find some free anime download sites or watch it online if you google it.

Mind game was really awesome. Weird as all hell but awesome. I'll have to give that series a try too.

I don't really know about Samurai Champaloo, are you trying to trick me. It looks kind of not great.

edit: samurai beats american baseball team, is this what you think of me :(

yeah, it WAS really weird.  i wish more weird things would come out of japan, honestly, and not just teenage-girl-getting-fucked-by-tentacles weird, either.  there's too much of that kind of weird!  people champion boring shit like PAPRIKA as being indicative of japan being at the top of the animation world, but i watched that shit and HIGH PRODUCTION VALUES but it was pretty boring.  the sex scene on the boat in the whale was one of the coolest pieces of animation i've ever seen, though.  that was maybe my fave part of the movie as far as visual stuff goes.

unfortunately kemonozume doesn't do as much in the ways of weird bells and whistles but the animation style is still atypical (often a complete lack of shading, like in mindgame).  if you look at the wiki it shows character portraits that give you a pretty good idea of the style.

samurai champloo is OKAY i guess.  the first episode was actually pretty good but after that it tapered off a lot.  it's got STYLE but there's very little substance and the characters are pretty wooden and uninteresting, which ultimately made me not really want to finish the series.  also it is very meandering and episodic and doesn't really feel like it's going anywhere.  bebop was this way too, to some extent, but the subplots and characters were all a lot better so you actually gave a shit what was going on.  it's sort of disappointing because i liked cowboy bebop a lot and it was kind of lauded as being the next version of that (samurais and hiphop instead of space cowboys and jazz!), but where bebop was style with some amount of substance attached, champloo is mostly just style.  there is this one ep in the middle of the series tho where the cleaner looking dude falls in love with a prostitute and it was pretty good!  it's not really a series worth watching, though.

You really should try watching Kemonozume. I've just recently started watching and I love the visual style. Try checking out Kaiba too. It's made by the same guy, though the series hasn't finished yet.

I also suggest watching Paranoia Agent. It's only 13 episodes long and it's great.

oh shit, yuasa directed kaiba?  i'd been meaning to check it out ever since i saw jeff's topic because it honestly looks okay, but now i really need to see it!

also yeah paranoia agent is gr9 if you haven't seen it already.  it's been a while since i saw it but now and then, here and there is also good and pretty short (13 eps i think).  you could also check out like... OVAs or whatever because they tend to have higher production values and they're usually no more than 4-6 episodes.  i like read or die a lot as far as FLUFF/ACTION shit goes and hitsuji no uta was okay too!  i think chainer swears by 3x3 eyes which i downloaded but never watched, but chainer also liked MABURAHO i think so idk take that with a grain of salt.

Death Note got crappy during the second half, but the ending made up for it.

Anyways, watch Monster. Or Berserk. Or Esacaflowne. Or Full Metal Alchemist. Or Paranoia Agent. It doesn't matter. From the sound of it, you just like anything that's good, and those are.

yeah monster is good but VERY LONG so maybe not that.  also not fma because it's overrated and not escaflowne because it's really gay and made for teenage girls.

I haven't watched many anime either, but I'd recommend Black Jack to you. It's a medical anime about some crazy doctor who charges extraordinarily high fees for his operations and stuff. It's pretty good, actually, although it's 50 episodes, dunno if that's long for you.

Overrated? Let the guy watch it himself and determine whether it's good or not. Personally I thought it was rather entertaining, which is why I'm suggesting it.

Also, you didn't like Escaflowne?

Long isn't REALLY a problem, what I meant by "a series, shorter than 24023409234 episodes" is no shit like NARUTO or I don't know what where there's been a hundred thousand episodes, mostly bad probably, and there's no end in sight.

But yeah keep em coming guys I'm writin em down.

then yes watch monster because it's baller and very NON-ANIME but not fma if you do not want WACKY ANIME ACTION *falls down* baaaaaka ><.  i really think it is like the worst of the bones series from that time period!  i haven't seen scrapped princess in like FOUR YEARS so idk if it was as good as i remember it being, and the same goes for rahxephon, but wolf's rain is probably still pretty cool, even in retrospect.  also planetes because HARD SCIFI isn't really something you see a lot in anime.

and not escaflowne if this does not appeal to you:

I thought FMA was cookie cutter nonsense...that is, until I actually watched it. It's not. Have you seen it? It actually gets intense and dramatic pretty often. So you don't like it...okay...but to say it's just another generic anime is untrue.

And Escaflowne is a romance show with some great mecha action. What's your point? That doesn't make it bad.

Weeeell, it does a little for me, I've always hated mechs or at least thought the whole idea was kind of childish and silly. I've heard full metal alchemist is pretty good from people I sort of trust in real life though but that Escaflowne looks really awful I'm afraid. Romance in anime always seems to be some eager but breathless girl flirting with some guy who cluelessly doesn't even get what's going on (or is too involved in his mech-fighting career that he doesn't care) and she never gives up hope. Either that or idiot guy trying to get with girl who doesn't seem interested but strings him along for twenty six episodes "maybe you'll get some next episode kyuzo-kun~ *kyuzo falls over*." Add great mecha action onto that and I'm totally out, not that I don't appreciate the suggestion

nah i saw the whole thing.  the premise is sort of cool but i didn't really find it to be anything more than a relatively unexceptional action/adventure anime.  it's a step above stuff like NARUTO for sure and it's more plot-driven, but i never thought it was exceedingly well done or anything; most of the characters are pretty one-dimensional, for example.  and it's plagued by A LOT of the stupid shit you see in anime that really just grates on you (the falling down, the don't call me short, the comedy that absolutely does not transcend culture, etc).  it's okay for what it is and i guess if mark is a fan of that type of shit he might like it but i thought.... i thought he was different

Well to each his own, I suppose. As for FMA, I thought the series had nice characters and told a good story. The comedy segments that you listed, I thought were well-placed to lighten up the mood and personally found them hilarious. But I don't get what you mean by "that kind of stuff." There's more to this series than just the comedy.

I'll second third fourth agree about FMA. It's got a pretty good storyline, great characters and decent graphics. Sure, sometimes it's a bit 'funny' but the overall story is really good. It even made me cry a few times. ;.;

I'm currently reading the manga for Gantz and I can only imagine just how bloody the anime version of it would be! Go~ry. >.<

Witch Hunter Robin was okay, in my opinion, though others may not agree. Pretty dark in some aspects. About a group that hunts 'witches'.

I liked Twelve Kingdoms, despite my copy being in terrible subbed engrish.

You could try.. I don't know, Black Jack. It was just a really generic anime about a doctor who practiced medicine illegally. It had some really interesting animation (looked like an old "cops and robbers" sort of cartoon from the 50's).

I never finished watching it (because I didn't have the full series), but it managed to hold together really well for being so generic. No special powers, no weird animals or monsters. Just a doctor and a kid who lived with him.

Quote
Most of the episodes involve Black Jack doing some good deed, for which he rarely gets recognition—often curing the poor and destitute for free, or teaching a capitalist fat cat and his pompous colleagues a lesson in humility. They frequently end with a good, humane person enduring hardship, often unavoidable death, to save others.

mark I'm seconding the recommendation you not waste your time on FMA (pretty long for an almost zero payoff (HITLER was pretty good though)) and also recommending Paranoia Agent and Monster (if you have the time). Paranoia Agent is probably the single best anime series that ever came out!

if you want just some little garbage stuff to watch, check out Berserk, which I always thought was kind of over the top (gayrape...monsterrape...) but has one of the best endings ever (even if it was unintentional).

You are weird. Berserk is one of the greatest anime ever. Those 24 (or was it 25?) episodes was the greatest experience I had watching anime. I skipped school and watched the whole thing in two days, I think. You are seriously the first person I ran into that didn't like it, not to mention call it garbage.

i watched mindgame today and it put me in a really good mood. that was a great movie, i'm definitely gonna watch it again probably real soon. also paranoia agent is interesting and has some good music as well. i still need to watch the last episode of that, i kind of lost track for some reason i guess i just haven't been in the mood for anime programming.

these two are the only animes i've ever seen which i could say i actually liked on more than a superficial level.

it's just kind of not good at a lot of parts and goes way too over the top with VIOLENCE RAPE etc. and then there's the fact it looks really dated, and not in a trigun way, but in a "full of frozen frames of actions" way.

I didn't think this was a weird opinion to have, but yeah Berserk's one of the better generic fantasy violence anime, probably because it's so dark or whatever.

me too! i loved it. probably the weirdest movie i've ever seen. was so intense. Most of all, I just really loved this director's style. Has anyone read the manga this is based on? Is it any good?

So yeah, I guess I will have to start listening to the recommendations in here. The only other Japanese animation thing I had ever watched was an episode of Monster, which was really good. I think I'm going to find Paranoia Agent or Monster next.

I watched a few episodes of Kemonozume, seems pretty good! At first I was worried because it started as a dojo of special samurais with a secret sword ability to defeat demons UH-OH, but it's good so far despite that
