Title: Mario Kart Wii Tournament Challenges
Post by: Kezay on June 03, 2008, 06:51:09 am
I suppose most here should already know of these, but if not, in Mario Kart Wii, Nintendo will periodically upload tournament challenges that players can compete in for the best times.  These times can be compared amongst those in your friends list, those within your region or those playing worldwide.  It's a nifty little feature that seems more like an offshoot of the challenge mode from Mario Kart DS than an actual tournmanet mode, but it helps extend the replay value of the game by offering a little something new every week or so for those who like to take part.  So has anyone given these a try yet and how well have you fared thus far?

So far, the roster of challenges is up to #3 but at the moment you can only participate in the latest challenge provided.  The challenges that have taken place thus far are as follows:

Tournament #1 - Mario Circuit (Look closely!)

- The goal of this challenge is simple; get the fastest time you can in a normal three lap run.  However, here is the catch, there is a full roster of AI opponents on the field with you, the positions of goombas have changed, and there are two chain chomps roaming the course.  The biggest barrier here isn't necessarily the goombas or the chain chomps but the other players.  Reason being is that their inclusion really makes getting a great time a result of being lucky as for every strategy you can figure out to get a fast time, you're likely to move up in the ranks beyond the pack and risk being subjected to the more devastating items which will kill any change of you getting a qualifying time.  There are two secrets to this challenge many didn't know about however:

1.  Hit a goomba with a shell and it will produce a mushroom.  Considering that those in first place can still get green shells, it's always in your best interest to take advantage of this whenever possible to help your time.

2.  The ramp that you think is a shortcut near the sandpit in the middle of the course, will actually hurt your time more than help.  It's better to charge a boost by drifting around the turn or hitting a goomba with a shell and running over the mushroom it produces.

Tournament #2 - GBA Battle Course 3 (Clear the gates, Wii Wheel only!)

Unfortunately, I didn't participate in this challenge as the week it came out I had a whacked out work schedule so I didn't game much at all that week other than on my DS during breaks.  Anyway, the goal of this challenge was to clear a series of gataes on the GBA Battle Course 3 map using only the Wii Wheel.  All other control configurations were not allowed in this challenge.  The biggest tip to this challenge is simply to get familiar with the map and know the best routes to clear the gates in the fastest time.  No other players, AI or otherwise were in this challenge so the work rested entirely on your own skill and ability.

Tournament #3 - Galaxy Colosseum (Push Topman out of the arena!)

Those who have played Super Mario Galaxy should recognize this character from the game.  A spiked, spinning top enemy that liked to push Mario around and will do the same to challengers in this scenario.  Played on a stage not available normally within Mario Kart Wii itself, this has probably proven to be the most interesting of the challenges thus far.  The goal of the challenge is to knock off four topmen off the stage, one after another in as fast a time as possible.  Item boxes move about the middle of the field providing triple mushrooms to help in the effort.  Thus far, the regional and worldwide times seem to hover around completing this challenge at the 13 second mark, which is very impressive considering how perfect you have to be with your execution to manage that.  I've devised a strategy of my own but it only nets me the 14 second mark, but is a big improvement from the 20 seconds or so I kept getting during the early start of the challenge.  The only real thing to know of here is that after knocking off the first two topmen, topmen #3 and #4 will both appear simultaneously.  Not exactly sure yet which character/kart combo is best for this, but I do know my strategy needs a middle weight class character (like Mario/Luigi or my Mii ) riding in a vehicle with great handling and decent acceleration like the Classic Dragster or the Daytripper.
