Title: Little known games which you thoroughly enjoyed?
Post by: UPRC on June 05, 2008, 11:19:01 am
Hey, we all love to talk about our current favourite games or older games which EVERYONE knows and has played.. But how about those games we all have in our collections, the ones few people know of? I think it is time that we profess our love for these awesome, unknown games.

Here are two from my collection which I have always had a soft spot for.

Destrega (1998)
Platform: Playstation
Developer: KOEI

Quote
The fighting style in the game is unique in many aspects. Movement includes the ability to freely roam the current environment. The X button jumps, while R1 causes the player to dash and L1 blocks. The close range fighting system is like Rock, Paper, Scissors where each type of attack is stronger and weaker than another. The Square button results in a quick (but weak) attack; Triangle a slow and powerful one. Circle allows you to sidestep, allowing an attack by slipping behind your opponent.

After stepping far back, the charge bar changes from Red to Blue, indicating you can use magic attacks. Just like close range there are three attacks. The Fast (Tiou), Power (Est), and Span (Foh). Tiou travels fast but hits weak, Est hits hard but travels slow, and if you are far away, the attack will disappear. Foh fires a multiple blast and does medium damage. Tiou beats Est, Est beats Foh, Foh beats Tiou. Tiou drains the least charge, Foh medium, and Est the most.

You can also combine magic attacks. Different combinations equal different results. There is a Level 1 attack; Tiou, Est, and Foh (3 Combinations). Then there is a Level 2 attack; Tiou Tiou, Tiou Est, Tiou Foh, Est Est, Est Foh, Foh Foh, etc (9 Combinations). All of which can be reversed (EX: Foh Est) Then the Level 3 attack, Tiou Tiou Tiou, Tiou Tiou Est, Est Est Tiou, Foh, Tiou Foh, etc (21 Combinations). Then There is a Level 4 attack, Tiou Est Foh (any order), (1 Combination), which does a powerful long wide attack.

Why I Like It: I remember when I first played this on an old Playstation Magazine demo disc, so it was probably in 1998 and I was most likely 12 at the time. I remember skimming through the games on the demo disc, not finding a whole lot which I was interested in, but then I stumbled across this game on the rotating wheel of demos.
So I hopped into the demo and found two game modes available, arcade and versus. Four selectable characters were present, which seemed like a lot for a demo at the time. I remember trying a swordsman character, Tieme, first. I didn't really know what I was doing at first , I just pressed random buttons until I realized that Square, Triangle, and Circle all performed different moves which behaved differently. Square was your speed attack, triangle was your power attack, and circle was your spread attack.. And then I realized that you could perform them multiple times, combine them, and perform huge attacks which were absolutely devastating.
I played arcade for a while before summoning my brother and kicking his ass for a bit until he came to grips with the demo. Not long after, I brought my best friend over and thrashed him a bunch until, he too, learned the game mechanics. This resulted in some REALLY epic fights as we learned what sort of strategies to use. The most important thing for us to remember was that Destrega was very much a "turn based fighter." Sure, you could move and attack whenever you'd want, but trust me.. You'd be smart to wait until the other guy finished an attack or his energy bar depleted.
I bought the full game last year. A little late, I know, but it was worth it. The game is not surprisingly deep and has next to nothing in the line of unlockables or secrets, but the actual gameplay is very challenging and strategic when you play with a friend. Awesome game which deserved a better score than what the reviewers gave it, with average scores being between 4 and 6. If I were to review the game, I'd give it about a 7.5. The singleplayer game is very weak and repetitive, but multiplayer was a blast and still is. Believe me.

Cardinal Syn (1998)
Platform: Playstation
Developer: 989 Studios

Quote
A 3D fighting game with free roaming features that allows you to move around a small interactive battlefield during combat, similar to the slightly more famed Ehrgeiz. The combatants are designed out of a dark fantasy world similar to Dungeons & Dragons, a great number of them non-human, each armed with melee weapons fitting for the style. The title gave access to combos, juggles, stage hazards, fatalities, projectiles, and battlefield powerups.

Why I Like It: Love this game! Again, first played it on an old Playstation Magazine demo disc and loved it. The demo for Cardinal Syn only had two characters, but they were each pretty badass. One was some sort of Elf named Orion with a staff or something of the sort, and a bitching Dark Knight named Vanguard who wore dark armor and fought with a pretty damn big sword. That guy, Vanguard, is easily my favourite fighting game character ever simply for his sheer awesomeness. Biggest bad-ass ever.
Now, for it's time, Cardinal Syn didn't play any worse than any other fighter out there. It was like.. Bushido Blade, only in closed arenas and with fantasy characters. A knight, skeleton, zombie, jester, dwarf, cyclops and even a giant dragon rounded out the roster for this game.
I bought the game in 1999 or 2000 instead of Final Fantasy Tactics (yeah, you heard me!) and I don't regret it. The disc stopped working after a year or two and I have not played it since.
HOWEVER.. I purchased it off eBay a few days ago and, if I am lucky, it will arrive in the mail tomorrow and I'll kick ass with Vanguard again on my PS3.
Cardinal Syn was another game which received poor ratings from the professional reviewers, but a quick look at a site such as GameFAQs shows that this is NOT a bad game and, had it been advertised properly, would probably have its own claim to fame today as one of the best and most unique fighters on the PS1.

Threads of Fate was a game released pretty late in the Playstations life, but that doesn't make it a bad game. It's one of the best action rpgs I've ever played, with 2 different ways to fight. Or rather, characters. Before you start a new game, you can pick between Rue, some dude who transforms into almost any monster he kills, or Mint, a magical magic using girl. Rue has more powerful physical attacks, but weaker special attacks when he's a monster. Mint has weaker physical attacks, but stronger magic, some which are really strong near the end of the game.

There was only 1 problem; The game was pretty damn short. Even with 2 playable characters, it wasn't very long.

The story was awesome. Theres this thing called the Dewprism, the most powerful relic created by Aeons long ago, which everyone wants to use. It could basically grants any wish. Rue wants to bring a person back to life, Mint wants world domination. Rue's story is pretty serious and sad, but Mint's story is very upbeat and comical. Personally I enjoyed Mint's story a bit more, but thats just me.

Everything was great in this game, especially the music. This is one of the best soundtracks in any rpg ever! Every theme was amazingly catchy and the sound quality was great in game. The graphics were completely 3d, and on top of that, they looked especially good for a Ps1 game. I'd totally give this game a 10/10, despite it's length.

Same here, had some good bouts! It was pretty awesome from memory.

I wasn't a big fan of Cardinal Syn but then again I barely played it.

I'm at work but I'll edit this with some games when I get home.

threads of fate was alright, i enjoyed it.

that video doesn't really do it much justice though, it's all cutscenes no real gameplay.  I don't remember the music being all that extraordinary but the game gets a 10/10 for creativity, with the exception of psycho master (HUR HUR HOW DARE YOU ATTACK ME FROM THE FRONT *proceeds to teleport*).

also idk, when i was younger i really enjoyed legends of legaia although i never finished it since that game was freaking hard.

One of my favorite tracks from this game.

I enjoyed this game a great deal back in the day. I remember really liking all of the characters too... I had something longer typed up but for some reason it vanished.

Tobal #1 was an amazing 3D fighter released around '96. It blended the adventure and arcade modes together making you fight through peons before you could actually fight in game characters . While computer play may get boring (due to there fucking cheap tactics [cough] Udan [/cough])  versus play was where it shined. Players duked it out with initially 8 characters and 3 unlockable characters. Tactics were basically the same for any 3D fighter (i.e. Tekken, Virtua Fighter) with the inclusion of grab reversals. Although being graphically clunky its a fun relic that still shines today.

Flying Dragon 64

An N64 game where I haven't met many people who ever played it.  It was a fun little arcade fighter that my bro and I enjoyed a lot back in the day, mainly because the two ways to play offered up different experiences.  You could choose to play the game normally where the characters are larger and the game plays more like traditional fighter (somewhat) or the you can play the game in SD mode which gave the characters a super deformed look and introduced equippable items that gave it almost an RPG character building feature.  I remember I used to always use Suzaku (the guy you see fighting at the 2:55 mark in the video) both in the SD and regular modes.  My brother always used a character called Wiler in the SD mode, but I don't recall if Wiler was available in the regular mode.  Some characters were and some weren't.  Meh, either way, it was fun and I've always hoped a sequel would come around but that's likely a pipe dream.

Rule of Rose: Amazing PS2 game that takes elements of Silent Hill, but without the mass of monsters. Really draws from things like darkness, being lost, etc... alternatives. Also, you control a little girl, with support from an AI dog.

Mercury Meltdown: Puzzle game where you tilt landscapes in order to split and gather drops of mercury and guide them around obstacles. Excellent.

Basically, anyone who hasn't played Shadow Hearts 2, is missing out on the best RPG on any Playstation console, and arguably one of the best RPGs of all time.

I mean, come on, it has a Homosexual Vampire Wrestler as a character. How cool is that?

I'm not sure, but I'd say SH1 too. I think I love both equally. SH2 is more modern and peppy and beautiful and all that, but SH1 had overall better writing and atmosphere. SH2 is definitely more epic though.

But yeah, I agree. Totally.

Treasure Hunter G. There weren't any other videos I could find that weren't bosses, so I chose this one. It was one of my favorites because of those were ass monsters. Also, the music is out of tune for some reason...

This is an excellent game, one of the best Rpgs on the Super Nintendo, strangely enough, no one knows about this shiny little gem. It might not be as amazing as Chrono Trigger(But really, what is?), but it's definetly a great game. Treasure Hunter G follows a quirky little cast of 2 brothers(Red and Blue), a monkey named Ponga, and a girl named Rain. They go on a search for Oparts, or Out of Place Artifacts(Or something like that) to stop the Dark Lord from doing dark things.

The story sound generic, but it's far from it. With great characters, beautiful graphics, equally beautiful music and a fun tactical battle system, this game has many things to enjoy. I usually don't like tactical battle systems, but Treasure Hunter G pulls it off very nicely. Plus, it also has on-screen encounters, which is always a plus.

Unfortunetly, this game never saw the day of light outside of Japan, but there does exist a full english translation patch. So if you have an emulator, I highly recommend downloading this.

You are fucking kidding right?
Rule of Rose was absolutely Shit,
Terrible Dialogue,
Shitty controls.
Loading screens every 5 seconds.
It was like they pounded it out and hoped the controversy would sell the game on its own.

Haunting Ground was a much better game where you had support from an AI dog. Nice controls, You had to hide from your attackers, storyline was more forfilling and it wasn't a chore to play through that game.

Yeah, Haunting Grounds is LOADS better. I have it, though it was for my friend and not exactly me at first. Gonna play it sometime though.

Both are kinda stupid though. They... both have.. say, disturbing, somewhat perverse themes.

Yep, a special version of Ryumaou which I never managed to get.  You didn't have to beat someone 100 times, but you did have to beat them over and over until you got a certain item drop that unlocked the "new" Ryumaou.  I remember reading about it in a Tips and Tricks book a long time ago but never got it to work.  For a while I thought it was a fake or a misprint.  :fogetlaugh:

It was like they pounded it out and hoped the controversy would sell the game on its own.

I never actually played it (I did find a copy of it recently but it was $50 and I don't have a working PS2 so fuck it) but I did watch a playthrough on youtube out of curiosity and it felt like it had the potential to be a really good game but just came out really really bad.

There are a lot of 3DO games that are pretty unknown but really good.  Guardian War and Kingdom: The Far Reaches (which was recently rereleased as a DVD game called Thayer's Quest, which confused me because it seems like the 3DO version is the only one where the main character's name is Lathan and not Thayer) come to mind.

Guardian War was a tactical RPG that wasn't too fancy but for some reason was really fun despite being map after map of ridiculous dungeons.  The reason they were ridiculous was because the scenery was like...really blurry PHOTOGRAPHS with low-res 3D models for the monsters and characters.  This screenshot explains it best:
Still, I found it to be very fun and addictive once you got past (or embraced) the silly graphics and the way the Goddess would say "Danger....DANGER" when you got into battle.

Kingdom: The Far Reaches was basically an interactive fantasy cartoon.  Except it was like a point and click adventure game instead of a "hit the buttons at the exact right moment" game like Dragon's Lair or other animated games from the time.  Basically there was a wizard who would make scrolls for you, and he had three or so different types.  You'd tell him what kind to work on, and I think you only got the next one after you used the one you had.  Then it was a matter of using the scrolls and other items you had at the right time and right place.  You basically chose different locations on a map, but you had to be careful because if you went to an area before you had the right item you'd get killed.  It's not overly complicated though, and it's pretty charming.  One really weird memory I have of this game is going into a place that sold various car audio equipment and they had a death scene from this game as the demo for a car DVD player they were selling.  I don't know if some company had this footage laying around or some nerd used it as a joke, but it took me a long time to figure out where I had seen that video before until I realized that it was from this game.  It was basically the main character being surrounded by skeletons in or near a bog, or something like that.  I don't really remember it very well anymore!

I really enjoy Spaceward Ho!, for those of you who haven't played it. It was a network strategy game developed by Delta Tao Software a long time ago. The game is simple enough to dive right into it, but complex enough to hold your attention for more than a few hours. You basically are some kind of plaetary leader and you go around colonizing planets, building ships, and terraforming and getting gold and metal, which you use to do all that stuff I just mentioned. There is a limited amount of metal in the game though, so the game will only last so long, and you have to monitor your development if you want to do well against a smart AI.

This game taught me a whole lot about striking gameplay balance. The cowboyish theme is neat too, as are the graphics for the ships (and the ability to build a biological space monster is cool too). I still play it sometimes if I'm bored and want a quick strategy game fix without having to dig out my Warcraft 2 disc or spending 8 hours on a game of Civ3.

^Looks like X-Com Interceptor, that. It was also a pretty brilliant little-known game.

Anyway I'm copy-pasting a post I made on another board because I'm lazy:

Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars (GBA) (2001)
What made this game good was NOT the gameplay. In fact, the gameplay pretty much sucked as it was a typical turn-based strategy RPG with barely any difficulty level: basically it was as such; level up your mechs, gain abilities, fight other mechs, rinse and repeat. Although the IAS system was pretty nifty (move around LEVs/OFs to either attack the enemy or evade the enemy depending on whose turn it was), it was way too easy. Turning of the IAS in the Options menu doesn't really help either because then attacks rely totally on chance and you'd probably lose instantly due to the enemy's higher numbers.

What I loved about this game (so much so that I sometimes name this as my favourite game of all time) is the way the whole thing was portrayed: the story, while with its obligatory number of anime cliches (see: fighting with a rebellion, and an amnesiac girl is key to powerful weapon; hero, finding a love interest, can't see this happening) was presented tremendously well. The dialogue sequences, with simply two face portraits on either side of a pre-rendered background with text instantly appearing at the bottom with a hit of the A/B button, were very effective. A good number of diverse characters and a hefty amount of character development also helped, as did the ability to get two different endings (both of which were equally enjoyable).

The best part about ZoE:tFoM was definitely the soundtrack. Honestly, if I don't have the electronic stylings of Mylo, Daft Punk or Jamiroquai playing in my head, I'm listening to the equally electronic stylings of the incredible OST. For a Gameboy Advance game as ancient as this one you'd come to wonder why it wasn't released as an official soundtrack like the other two Zone of the Enders games.

So in short, I loved this game and I encourage anyone here to play the ROM on an emulator. As the game is pretty old (and was hard to find already) I doubt Konami would see a problem in pirating this most under-rated game.

HYBRID HEAVEN

I remember that before this came out, they tried pumping everybody up for it so hard (nintendo power printed a blurb to the effect of "SO MANY TWISTS AND TURNS IT PUTS THE X-FILES TO SHAME"), but the final product turned out to be this goofy little sci-fi game about punching aliens and it was pretty underwhelming.

Except for the battle system, which fucking ruled and I still maintain is the best in any RPG ever. i mean i guess hybrid heaven is an rpg, there are hit points??

Two old computer shoot-em-up games,

Raptor: Call of the Shadows. I almost registered that one, spent a long time playing the shareware version.

Tyrian. One of the best games of it's type at the time. They were working on a gameboy port, but I think it got canned. The artist has posted all of the original game's artwork on his website for people to use.

Also,

Dare to Dream and it's two sequels. Weird windows adventure games. You had to use a fish on a door to open it.

I remember that game, I also remember it being so hard to find I never got around to buying it like I wanted so I just rented it from Blockbuster like three times in a row till I beat it.  The game was a bit underwhelming, if anything I was mostly sold on the game's story and the way the battle system/ stat system worked out by reading publications like Nintendo Power and Total64 back in the day.  I did kind of like the battle system though so if anything it might be cool to see something like that return in a far more ambitious title.

Shadow Hearts 2.

If you ignore the second disk, that is! Well, Yuri's cousin is cute but otherwise....

Also: I kind of want to say JILL SAVES THE PRINCE but I want to say that the game/series is fairly well-known.

I enjoyed SIM Life and SIM Tower. Probably known around these parts, but those youngin's nowadays have no clue what they're missing out on when they could be building ZEBRA/FISH/ALLIGATOR hybrids and thwarting terrorists! Oh and SIM Copter was so difficult for me but so great.

That's Rapid Reload or Gunner's Heaven in Japan an early PS1 game that plays very similar to Gunstar Heroes.
It was actually made by Mediavision, the people behind the early Wild Arms games.

I really enjoy Spaceward Ho!, for those of you who haven't played it. It was a network strategy game developed by Delta Tao Software a long time ago.
Man, I thought I was the only one who played this.  I used to play it when I was like 8 on my parents first computer, and while I didn't understand it half the time I had a lot of fun with it.

Operation: Winback I loved this game, it was on the PS2, mainly I loved it cause I thought it was cool that you could use boxes and your surroundings as cover and you could also see the ammo on the left and you had to count the bullets to know how many you had left in the magazine.

I'll admit I don't know why the hell I liked this game when I was a little boy but damn I must of been easily amused, I find it repetitive and boring now though.

Winback (Known as "Operation: Winback" in Australia) is a video game developed by Koei for the Nintendo 64 in 1999 and PlayStation 2 in 2001.

I don't know if its little known or not, I haven't seen anybody talk about it before, but ring of red was great. Without adding spoilers you took control of a rogue group of Mech pilots and had to accomplish various missions. The crew customization was a really nice feature and the fights were awesome (at the time). Really good concept and nicely developed characters too. A bit of an unforgiving save structure but generally it was a fantastic game.

Only the intro was on youtube, couldn't find game play except on game-spot (link at bottom):

threads of fate was alright, i enjoyed it.

that video doesn't really do it much justice though, it's all cutscenes no real gameplay.

Threads of Fate I loved...

and Legend of Legaia was great too. So was Legend of Dragoon. Like...both those games were so horrible TRADITIONAL RPG DRAGONS FIGHT ARGH but idk I just loved them.

They are like little gems in my heart.

Also, Legaia's fighting system is cool, the button pressing thing. Didn't they make a shitty sequel though?

Everytime I spend months waiting to get a game, I end up disapointed. When I had a PS2 i was always satisfied with games off the $10 bin. But soon I ended up with 20 games that my now mature mind finds crapy no mater what. I got an Xbox 360 though. I wont make the same mistakes though, when I'm done with a game I'll be done, so by by Mass Effect (you suck)

Anyone ever play Graphitti Kingdom or Magic Pengal. Let's see... I also enjoyed Scaler and Rayman Arena.

Rayman Arena is total absurd crap. The fighting part of the game is really terrible and the racing part is average at best. Sure, in Rayman the sliding parts are cool but god, don't make a game out of it.

I was never able to get into Threads of Fate. I don't really know why though, and I seriously couldn't even play it for very long. I remember almost nothing about it except that it left a bad taste in my mouth. Someone explain me what was good about it so maybe I'll give it another try. Legend of Legaia was pretty fun though I never got that far in it either, but back when I first played it I didn't even own it and then I just kinda forgot about the whole game. I have Legaia 2 for PS2 but I can't really say if it's good or bad because I have played it for like 10 minutes, tops.

Legend of Dragoon is great though. I'm aware it's really traditional and the story seems like some homage to shallow RPG stories with lots of twists and cliches and it's kinda slow and the translation is pretty horrible but for one reason or another I still enjoyed it a lot.

I guess it's just not for everyone... Kind of like Earthbound, except more people like Earthbound(Or actually know about it).

What was so good about it was how all the elements of the actual game blended together. The music, graphics, characters, storyline... all of it was incorporated so nicely. And while all that was happening, you get a nice action battle system with magic and transformation involved. The atmosphere was very good and consistent. It's one of those games were, when you think about it, you get a good feeling because of it's atmosphere(Or maybe it's just nostalgia...).

I don't know. But I thought it was an awesome game, one of my favorites.

Oh yes, I loved this game.
I only played the demo version and it was great. Upgrading your ship will all that hard earned money, heh.

Anyhow, a game I think only about 10 people have ever played AND liked it...

ILLBLEED (2001)
Sega Dreamcast

Wikipedia Description:
Quote
Illbleed is a survival horror video game for the Sega Dreamcast. In it, players are tasked with guiding horror movie aficionado Eriko Christy through a deadly theme park riddled with booby-traps and monsters, relying on a heartbeat monitor and her own senses (some of which are conveyed through an in-game interface and others indirectly) to avoid being frightened to death. Should she make it out alive, the eccentric genius responsible for the park's creation, Micheal Reynolds, will reward Eriko with a hundred million dollar prize and leave the amusement park.

The game's plot revolves around rescuing your 3 friends (and 1 person you meet along the way) who visited Illbleed earlier and have been trapped there for 3 days.
---
ILLBLEED obviously wasn't big, its reviews weren't all that hot either. Often complaints about it were the steep learning curve on the controls, bad voice acting and plain graphics. Now why did I like it? Well first of all I found the concept to be very interesting. It sounded corny, but eerie at the same time (which is pretty much the essence of the game). Second the controls were perfectly fine, I got a hang of them on the overworld area. The graphics didn't bother me, and the voice acting, while bad in some cases, felt a bit fitting.

I enjoyed the overall story of the game, and the sub stories of the levels themselves (they are all based after movies created by the park's creator, Michael Reynolds). The humor was bizarre and often times didn't make any sense, but it added to the eerie-ness.

The gameplay was interesting, and well done (if you understand the way the game works). It pretty much revolves around detecting traps around the level using your "senses" and a device called the Horror Monitor. There are also monsters to fight, and while the battle system wasn't elaborate, it got the job done.

In the end it was very different, and a very good concept really. I don't play many games, so this is a first for me.

So yeah video:
The reason why the player keeps on pausing at the map screen is because 1. its helpful to pass through the maze and 2. its actually a little trick that causes the villain chasing the character to stop. Not sure why but it just does.

Its actually not mandatory, you can go though the maze with out pausing much and still have a chance to avoid the enemy.
There are only 3 parts in the game where you are stuck in a maze with an enemy (or enemies) chasing you, so you won't be doing much pausing normally unless its to heal.

i used to be a HUGE bomberman fan and i remember i was looking forward to this game before it was out. when it came out it was actually good however many people did not think this. what's really amazing to me is how much STUFF there was to do in the game. every level you play you maybe only see something like 50% of it, but to get all the GOLD CARDS you need to look around and do puzzles. the gold card thing isn't stupid either, because getting them all unlocks an entire new level (there are 5 normal levels, and the hidden one). if you do everything the game is probably 25 hours long. in addition to the single player being good the multiplayer was also pretty good as you would expect from a bomberman game. from what i know bomberman is basically some retarded anime bullshit game now, this was probably the last GOOD bomberman game.

the game isn't the greatest thing ever, but it's a lot better than people gave it credit for.

Joachim was gay?  I'd say he was maybe flamboyant or eccentric but whatever.  Guess it takes one to know one.
Games that no one really played but should have:
1.  Gungrave:  Gamplay and graphics weren't its' strong points but the game makes up for all that in atmosphere and story.  The cut scenes are brilliant.  Plus the music was done by Tsueno Imahori(Trigun).

2.  Megaman X Command Mission:  Beautifully cell shaded graphics.  Catchy Megaman tunes.  Solid turn based combat with a touch of real time.  Even the story was decent.

3.  Guilty Gear XX2:  Best 2d fighter since Street Fighter.  The heavy metal motif suits the game.  Amazing soundtrack.  Fantastic roster of characters.  Convoluted storyline that may or may not make sense to you.  The dialogue between the characters are really entertaining.

Ah, little known games. For this, I turn to the good ol' Dreamcast. One of my favourite games in my whole collection, perhaps for being the first adult themed sandbox game I knew of, was Omikron. David Bowie music, adult theme, strip clubs, apartments, detective work... set in the Future. It was so awesome. The problem with this game was the learning curve and saving system.
Learning curve: You had basically no tutorial whatsoever, and you had to solve a crime in this futuristic city with flying cars and robots. There was a combat simulator to use, which is a good idea to do so. Because when you do solve the problem and find yourself combatting a demon... well... you could end up dead. Luckily, you're not really the cop. You're just a Dreamcast player, so you can go off and possess another civilian. Each character you take the role of has their own life, which is plain cool.

It's sad there's so few gameplay videos. It's not a fighting game, if that's what these imply, instead, it's this open sandbox detective game. Kind of like a mixpot of Shenmue, Grand Theft Auto, Virtua Fighter, and David Bowie. One of my favourite scenes as the cop character was taking down terrorists in a grocery store (or some type of store). It was a great gun fight.

I really liked Shogo, an anime FPS with mechs. You got to fight both in the mech and as a soldier, which was pretty fun. It was kind of goofy and pretty easy, but there was a host of cool guns and the gameplay flowed well. There were two separate endings too, depending on which side you chose to support, which meant you got to visit different levels so it had some replay value there.

The best part was the guns as a mech though, they were awesome. There was this fully automatic megalaser thing that just blew anything up, as well as one gun that shot gigantic mines. You also had a laser sword and got to choose between different mechs for each mission.

awesome game

TWO WORDS AND ONE NUMERAL:

Shadow Hearts 2.
Completely agree with above.

Basically, anyone who hasn't played Shadow Hearts 2, is missing out on the best RPG on any Playstation console, and arguably one of the best RPGs of all time.

I mean, come on, it has a Homosexual Vampire Wrestler as a character. How cool is that?

That wouldn't be an account you made, DN, would it?

I would say Gun is one of the best western themed PC games I've ever played, I rarely see any talk of it, and most people I know haven't even heard of it.

I would say that I really liked Star Trek:  25th Anniversary.  It is an adventure game for DOS, and you basically play out a set of scenarios with Captain Kirk's crew.   The objective of the six or so scenario varies, but the theme is just like the show:  Try to find the best solution.  This means being diplomatic, not using phasers on kill, so on and so forth.  It really captures the show perfectly, as does Judgement Rites.   However, you are also free to be an inept Captain Kirk, you just lose points for not following the preferred route.  So you can make quite a few mistakes and still get to the end.

Moving onto platforming glory, I heartily nominate La-Mulana.  8-bit graphics that are succulent to behold, MetroidVania gameplay with a serious dash of Zelda...and it is free.  A really good combination, I say.  If MetroidVania isn't your bag though, give Gun Hazard a shot.  Featuring a rather heavy story in the Front Mission world, you play with a mecha in a side-scrolling RPG game.  Looks good, quite serious, and just plain neat.

I played the gamecube version of Gun and it is genuinely one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. Maybe the worst! I haven't really thought about it hard enough.

Like, it reminds me of those old shitty NES games they used to put out back before developers knew how to properly make videogames. You start off thinking "heh it's so bad it's almost funny", but 45 minutes later, all you can think about is how unfortunate your life is to be playing Gun alone at 11pm on a friday night

If I remember correctly, Winback was originally released for the N64. Right?

Yeah, as the poster after you said two years earlier. The PS2 version is heavily upgraded graphically though.

Raptor: Call of the Shadows. I almost registered that one, spent a long time playing the shareware version.

I loved this game. It was one of my favourites when I was younger. I never registered it actually, I'd really like to. From memory there's a small company that can register it still, an online thing. I'll check it out. But yeah, the upgrade system was fantastic, the action was fun, the weapons were awesome.

HYBRID HEAVEN

I remember this game being really hyped but then nobody ever played it. I didn't think it was that great, it was a bit clunky and awkward. The combat was awesome though.

Even though I'm not a big action gamer I pick up quite a few really arcadey action games on the cheap for a short blast, so I'll go through a few of them.

I recently picked up Dead to Rights II (a lot of you probably remember the first but the second didn't get a lot of exposure) and it's not a bad game. The dialogue is bloody awful, but it's intentional and it's fairly funny. It's extremely arcadey, but the disarm/human shield system along with the bullet time moves make it pretty enjoyable. I actually had to retry sometimes as well, it's not always a pushover. It's like a cross between Time Crisis and Max Payne but worse than both. Still, not a bad pickup for ten bucks (it'd be like 5-6 in America).

Total Overdose (http://totaloverdose.com/player.asp?language=us) wasn't a bad game either, in much the same vein as DtRII with a sandbox world. It's quasi-sequel Just Cause got an article on the GW blog recently. But yeah, it presented itself as a GTA style game but it was fairly linear from memory, you could explore but there wasn't a lot of reason to as the world wasn't that interesting. Still, the combat was completely over the top and stupid and it was a blast to play because it didn't outstay it's welcome.

Speaking of not outstaying welcomes, I dunno if many of you played the original Gungrave but I think it's one of the shortest games I've ever played. I found it to be a heap of fun for the roughly two hour playthrough. Wouldn't play it again, but if you're bored one day and you see it for five bucks or so, then pick it up, it's a nice way to waste a couple of hours one afternoon.

EB near me is having a huge sale so I'll pick up a few more lesser known action games and give them a go. I dunno if these all fit as 'little known' but from what I can see they all got pretty average scores and were passed over by the majority of people.

I just bought destrega for like 25 bucks on amazon. I remember reading this topic when UPRC first posted it and getting hell of stoked over that game. I watched some youtubes and read some gamefaqs and decided it was a game I definitely want a piece of. I didn't buy it for whatever reason but anyways I just remember how great it was, watched a couple more youtubes and re-decided to get it. Maybe that was my plan, you know, "sleep on it."

Anyways my and brother and i are gonna totally tear this shit up because we are mad into twoplayer games (not really but it's an aspiration).

Really? I liked Gun. By no means was it amazing, but it was a good 3 hours of shooting random stuff and racial stereotypes. I guess I had more fun just going on killing sprees in town, but according to the game that's looked down upon.

True gaming gold from the good old days of cheesy FMV games

Under A Killing Moon

Straight from wiki-
Under a Killing Moon (1994) was the third installment in the Tex Murphy series of adventure games produced by Access Software. In Under a Killing Moon Tex again fights the forces of evil as he tries to stop a dangerous cult from destroying the world. Under a Killing Moon combined full motion video (FMV) cutscenes with a 3D virtual world to explore. Under a Killing Moon was in its day one of the largest video games ever, arriving on four CD-ROMs (although some material was duplicated among the four to reduce the amount of swapping).

probably no more then 4 members of GW have played this game...

Yeah Dynamite Headdy was (and still is) one of my favorite games.  It's so freaking hard but the levels, enemies, boss fights, and system in general are a testament to how well Treasure understands platforming.

Azure Dreams was fucking awesome. It was the first Playstation game I played (and the first Roguelike), and I ended up racking up 200+ hours on it. Even then I didn't complete the game or even get half of the monsters :[ Though I did get every girl and remember beating that rich guy something like 1200 times. Hahaha.

Guardians Crusade was another totally amazing Playstation RPG that hardly anyone heard of.
Alundra was really good too. But holy shit, for a 12 year old kid it was ball breakingly hard.
Brave Fencer Musashi too, awesome game but jdhasd fuck you fucking steamwood.

Heaven and Earth/SoulBlazer series:

Bushido Blade series:
I remember playing both Bushido Blade games when I was 9-10. When I got my second ps1 it came along with two, or maybe more, boxes full of pirate games. A lot of them were in English, but there was also a a lot of them in Japanese. Both Bushido Blade games were in Japanese, though they were fighting games and it didn't matter much.
Bushido Blade and Bushido Blade 2 feature large maps where you and your opponent can fight in. You begin by selecting your character and then your weapon. Unlike other fighting games, in Bushido Blade there are no life gauges. Instead you die when your opponent lands a fatal strike on you with his weapon. You're also able to disable and cripple your opponent by attacking them.

Bushido Blade

Another Code: Two Memories/Trace Memory:
Another Code: Two Memories is a cool adventure/puzzle game for the DS. Although it's short, the gameplay is fun and the story is interesting. You follow Ashley who has lived with her aunt Jessica since her parents vanished 13 years ago. One day she receives a package from her father and a letter asking her to meet him at Blood Edward island. When she an her aunt arrive at the island they find out that he isn't there to greet them. Soon Jessica disappears when she goes to looking for him. Ashley is then forced to explore the island and it's mansion.

Another Code: Two Memories

I've also been meaning to play Hotel Dusk: Room 215 which is made by the same people, but it's just so hard to find. Maybe I'll just have to order it...

I could list many games. This topic actually brought back many memories when I was a kid and games weren't really into the habits of small kids (I was like 4). I had the luck to have a dad in the computer industry and we had a computer which was really neat back then. I especially remember a game I played which I don't remember its name but it had a kid with a helmet which was yellow with green and white stripes I think and he ventured in a world with potato enemies and other weird people. In the first version he used to throw bombs but in the sequel he had a gun and other stuff that made you jump higher or whatever. If anyone could help me find the name for this game it would be awesome. I think the hero was named Ken or something like that. He also had a spaceship in the latest game. I think a GW member used to have an avatar of the guy.

I dunno maybe Bushido Blade 2 was theoretically better but I just thought Bushido Blade 1 was so minimal or something and I thought some of the ideas were badass like

Also didn't Bushido Blade 1 have bigger environments for some reason - I remember you could fight in a forest of bamboo and actually cut down the trees, that was badass

also I hated Illusion of Gaia for some reason. Meant to try Terranigma but never did. I remembed IoG looking better but Terranigma seems to have that familiar RPG look to it

also I liked Azure Dreams but I think it'd depress me today - but then again I liked how little it was about the combat/tower part and you could like pimp out your house and crap. Like you could get a poster of some lady's ass, seriously

wasn't there a version for Game Boy, too? Probably wasn't as good

I think there was bowling and crap too

Legend of the River King for the gameboy was also a great one.  It was a FISHING RPG.  Apparently they've released the DS version which was kind of weird because I didn't know it was a series that got released anytime after the gameboy one in the US, but I have yet to try it.  Still, it was a pretty fun little fishing game with RPG exploring and stuff.  The button configuration was a bit weird (I can't stand when anything but start brings up the menu), but it was overall pretty fun.  Since the DS version was released, I wonder if the Wii version is/was released.  I've been wanting a fishing game for the Wii just because it's set up so well for it, but the problem is just that fishing games, like horse breeding/racing games, are RARELY done well, especially the ones that make it to the US.  If it is like the GB version, I'd say the Wii version of this game would be great.

Speaking of which, I don't know how unknown it is compared to just how unplayed it is, but Derby Owners Club is my favorite arcade game ever.  I decided to play it randomly one day thinking a horse game would be pretty bad but I've been hooked ever since.  Something about the gameplay reminds me of Monster Rancher, just the whole flow of train, compete (racing instead of fighting of course), win some money, train some more, then when it gets too old, breed it and start again.  It would be amazing to just plain make an arcade version of Monster Rancher like that, with one big screen in the middle for the action and separate terminals around it for the players.  It's such a cool setup, I'd like to see more done with it.

Guardians Crusade was another totally amazing Playstation RPG that hardly anyone heard of.

I bought Guardians Crusade a couple of years ago and I thought it was great. It was charming as hell - had a really simple and straight forward style and didn't try to fool you as to what it was. If you like really traditional, simple RPG's you can't go wrong. Definitely worth a purchase (considering I got it for next to nothing).

I dunno maybe Bushido Blade 2 was theoretically better but I just thought Bushido Blade 1 was so minimal or something and I thought some of the ideas were badass like

You might be familiar with these games but they were pretty obscure, especially outside Europe. When it came to releasing the games internationally, EA renamed both of the games because they were afraid people would think the games were too kiddy (Most developers were making very mature games, LBA was intentionally quite unique.)

Little Big Adventure 1 Known as Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure in the US
Platforms: PC (MS-DOS), PlayStation, PC (Windows)
Released in 1994
Quote
You are Twinsen, a young male Quetch living a bizarre world named Twinsun. Twinsun is a world that is balanced between two suns. Living on this land are 4 races—Quetches (humanoids), Rabbibunnies (rabbit like creatures), Grobos (elephant like creatures), and Spheroids (sphere shaped creatures). The land has been under the ruthless dictatorship of the evil Dr Funfrock, who has outlawed, among others, all discussions on the Legend of Sendell, the planet’s goddess. When Twinsen begins to talk openly about his mystical dreams of this legend and the impending destruction of Twinsun, he is thrown into the asylum. You must help Twinsen to escape from the asylum, travel to Fortress Island, save his wife, defeat the evil Dr Funfrock, solve the Legend of Sendell, and save the world.
Little Big Adventure plays entirely from an isometric perspective, unlike it's sequel. Both games are quite similar but have a very different feel, the original being a much darker world that has been overrun by the evil Dr FunFrock and his cloned army. In the second game you are a proven hero but in the first game people are less willing to trust you and is definately a harder, sometimes frustrating experience. The behaviour mode is quite unique (You can switch between normal, athletic, agressive and sneaky modes at any time). Overall, it's just as enjoyable as it's sequel with it's great moments and interesting story-telling with unique characters in a world that you will want to explore.

Little Big Adventure 2 Known as Twinsen's Odyssey in the US
Platforms: PC (MS-DOS), PC (Windows)
Released in 1997
Quote
Like its predecessor, LBA2 is real-time adventure. It combines several action game/arcade sequences and some elements from the role-playing game genre. The game's gameplay is partially free-roaming, allowing the player to travel around the islands once they have been "unlocked" by completing certain objectives; there are also many tasks which are optional or non-linear. Certain locations in the game are initially blocked from the player until they progress to a certain stage.

Interactivity with the world is important in Little Big Adventure. Almost all characters can be talked to, and enemies are often performing tasks while the game world is active. The artificial intelligence in the game was particularly groundbreaking at the time, with enemies often running to alarms to alert other guards to the player's location, opposed to games like Doom released in the same timeframe where enemies can only chase and shoot at the player.
This game is just a ton of fun to play and the game world is awesome to explore. It's short and sweet with varied gameplay. The graphics and animation are done really well and the characters are all unique with unique voice-overs for all dialogue. The gameplay is split up into outdoor areas which are fully 3D and the indoor areas which use the isometric engine from the first game. The game plays like an action-adventure game, but it also has RPG/Puzzle elements that aren't too deep but keep things interesting. I like how the planets themselves are very different, each of them contain unique species and have their own associated music and their own currency and technology. If you like quirky games like Beyond Good & Evil, definately check these out if you haven't already.

I played God Hand, Raziel played God Hand, and even Chef played God Hand. Afaik, we all enjoyed it very much.

It's such.. idk, a simple concept. It's really just a beat 'em up. Like in the old days you have Final Fight and such as beat 'em ups, but God Hand feels like the natural evolution of the genre in the modern day. Forget the PS2 Final Fight (hahaha oh god)

But yeah God Hand is simple (and not simple at the same time), 90% game, 10% story, and even then the cutscenes/feel/music(oh yes) are pretty classy. I agree, it's under appreciated. :(

ps: for an action game it is also very long!!!

Vandal Hearts
This was one of the lesser known tactical RPGs on the Playstation. In my opinion, this game was really really good. There was always a strategy to winning certain missions, and even though this game is completely linear, it's pretty fun the whole way through. The environment surrounding the areas in battle played a pretty big role as well. Not to mention the story was actually pretty good.
If you're a fan of tactical RPGs, you've probably heard of this game(as well as Vandal Hearts II). If not, then some of you should try this game out, it's pretty good.
The video here is one of my favorite battles. If you don't know what you're doing, it gets pretty difficult.

also I hated Illusion of Gaia for some reason. Meant to try Terranigma but never did. I remembed IoG looking better but Terranigma seems to have that familiar RPG look to it
Terranigma is much better. A lot of people don't like Illusion of Gaia (I did), but like Terranigma.

I'm not sure how obscure/well-known this is, but I remember playing it as a kid and never hearing anything about it since, so...
The Neverhood

It was an adventure game, but a really strange one: It was all done in claymation, for a start, and there was very little dialogue throughout... And it also had a great soundtrack of all this dixieland jazz stuff. I remember it as being kinda hard, so I didn't really get far, but it was still so weird and cool that it always kinda stuck with me.
Anyway I'm downloading it again now, so I guess I'll see whether the childhood nostalgia pays off.

Oh man Neverhood was awesome. I think I played very little of it though. That video really reminded me how funny and cool the game was.

Herc's Adventures

It's a really fun hack and slash that I used to play this all the time. Although I've never beaten it...hmm maybe I should pick it up again.
