The fighting style in the game is unique in many aspects. Movement includes the ability to freely roam the current environment. The X button jumps, while R1 causes the player to dash and L1 blocks. The close range fighting system is like Rock, Paper, Scissors where each type of attack is stronger and weaker than another. The Square button results in a quick (but weak) attack; Triangle a slow and powerful one. Circle allows you to sidestep, allowing an attack by slipping behind your opponent.
After stepping far back, the charge bar changes from Red to Blue, indicating you can use magic attacks. Just like close range there are three attacks. The Fast (Tiou), Power (Est), and Span (Foh). Tiou travels fast but hits weak, Est hits hard but travels slow, and if you are far away, the attack will disappear. Foh fires a multiple blast and does medium damage. Tiou beats Est, Est beats Foh, Foh beats Tiou. Tiou drains the least charge, Foh medium, and Est the most.
You can also combine magic attacks. Different combinations equal different results. There is a Level 1 attack; Tiou, Est, and Foh (3 Combinations). Then there is a Level 2 attack; Tiou Tiou, Tiou Est, Tiou Foh, Est Est, Est Foh, Foh Foh, etc (9 Combinations). All of which can be reversed (EX: Foh Est) Then the Level 3 attack, Tiou Tiou Tiou, Tiou Tiou Est, Est Est Tiou, Foh, Tiou Foh, etc (21 Combinations). Then There is a Level 4 attack, Tiou Est Foh (any order), (1 Combination), which does a powerful long wide attack.
A 3D fighting game with free roaming features that allows you to move around a small interactive battlefield during combat, similar to the slightly more famed Ehrgeiz. The combatants are designed out of a dark fantasy world similar to Dungeons & Dragons, a great number of them non-human, each armed with melee weapons fitting for the style. The title gave access to combos, juggles, stage hazards, fatalities, projectiles, and battlefield powerups.
hahaha i played the destrega demo too!
Flying Dragon 64
An N64 game where I haven't met many people who ever played it. It was a fun little arcade fighter that my bro and I enjoyed a lot back in the day, mainly because the two ways to play offered up different experiences. You could choose to play the game normally where the characters are larger and the game plays more like traditional fighter (somewhat) or the you can play the game in SD mode which gave the characters a super deformed look and introduced equippable items that gave it almost an RPG character building feature. I remember I used to always use Suzaku (the guy you see fighting at the 2:55 mark in the video) both in the SD and regular modes. My brother always used a character called Wiler in the SD mode, but I don't recall if Wiler was available in the regular mode. Some characters were and some weren't. Meh, either way, it was fun and I've always hoped a sequel would come around but that's likely a pipe dream.

TWO WORDS AND ONE NUMERAL:
Shadow Hearts 2.
Completely agree with above.
Basically, anyone who hasn't played Shadow Hearts 2, is missing out on the best RPG on any Playstation console, and arguably one of the best RPGs of all time.
I mean, come on, it has a Homosexual Vampire Wrestler as a character. How cool is that?
Rule of Rose: Amazing PS2 game that takes elements of Silent Hill, but without the mass of monsters. Really draws from things like darkness, being lost, etc... alternatives. Also, you control a little girl, with support from an AI dog.You are fucking kidding right?
Wow the memories of this! My cousin stayed up till like 4 in the morning trying to unlock some secret character by beating someone like 100 times or whatever. That game was intense.
Shining Force II, man I wish SEGA would do a proper Shining Force sequel.
You are fucking kidding right?
Rule of Rose was absolutely Shit,
Terrible Dialogue,
Shitty controls.
Loading screens every 5 seconds.
It was like they pounded it out and hoped the controversy would sell the game on its own.
Threads of Fate was a game released pretty late in the Playstations life, but that doesn't make it a bad game. It's one of the best action rpgs I've ever played, with 2 different ways to fight. Or rather, characters. Before you start a new game, you can pick between Rue, some dude who transforms into almost any monster he kills, or Mint, a magical magic using girl. Rue has more powerful physical attacks, but weaker special attacks when he's a monster. Mint has weaker physical attacks, but stronger magic, some which are really strong near the end of the game.
There was only 1 problem; The game was pretty damn short. Even with 2 playable characters, it wasn't very long.
The story was awesome. Theres this thing called the Dewprism, the most powerful relic created by Aeons long ago, which everyone wants to use. It could basically grants any wish. Rue wants to bring a person back to life, Mint wants world domination. Rue's story is pretty serious and sad, but Mint's story is very upbeat and comical. Personally I enjoyed Mint's story a bit more, but thats just me.
Everything was great in this game, especially the music. This is one of the best soundtracks in any rpg ever! Every theme was amazingly catchy and the sound quality was great in game. The graphics were completely 3d, and on top of that, they looked especially good for a Ps1 game. I'd totally give this game a 10/10, despite it's length.
HYBRID HEAVEN
I remember that before this came out, they tried pumping everybody up for it so hard (nintendo power printed a blurb to the effect of "SO MANY TWISTS AND TURNS IT PUTS THE X-FILES TO SHAME"), but the final product turned out to be this goofy little sci-fi game about punching aliens and it was pretty underwhelming.
Except for the battle system, which fucking ruled and I still maintain is the best in any RPG ever. i mean i guess hybrid heaven is an rpg, there are hit points??
Based on the cover art, I thought this game was a Wild Arms spinoff.

Shadow Hearts 2.
What game is that? That screenshot is pretty neat looking. That's Rapid Reload or Gunner's Heaven in Japan an early PS1 game that plays very similar to Gunstar Heroes.
Raptor: Call of the Shadows. I almost registered that one, spent a long time playing the shareware version.Fuck, this game was awesome.
I really enjoy Spaceward Ho!, for those of you who haven't played it. It was a network strategy game developed by Delta Tao Software a long time ago.Man, I thought I was the only one who played this. I used to play it when I was like 8 on my parents first computer, and while I didn't understand it half the time I had a lot of fun with it.
Winback (Known as "Operation: Winback" in Australia) is a video game developed by Koei for the Nintendo 64 in 1999 and PlayStation 2 in 2001.
threads of fate was alright, i enjoyed it.Threads of Fate I loved...
that video doesn't really do it much justice though, it's all cutscenes no real gameplay. I don't remember the music being all that extraordinary but the game gets a 10/10 for creativity, with the exception of psycho master (HUR HUR HOW DARE YOU ATTACK ME FROM THE FRONT *proceeds to teleport*).
also idk, when i was younger i really enjoyed legends of legaia although i never finished it since that game was freaking hard.
Threads of Fate I loved...I was never able to get into Threads of Fate. I don't really know why though, and I seriously couldn't even play it for very long. I remember almost nothing about it except that it left a bad taste in my mouth. Someone explain me what was good about it so maybe I'll give it another try. Legend of Legaia was pretty fun though I never got that far in it either, but back when I first played it I didn't even own it and then I just kinda forgot about the whole game. I have Legaia 2 for PS2 but I can't really say if it's good or bad because I have played it for like 10 minutes, tops.
and Legend of Legaia was great too. So was Legend of Dragoon. Like...both those games were so horrible TRADITIONAL RPG DRAGONS FIGHT ARGH but idk I just loved them.
They are like little gems in my heart.
Also, Legaia's fighting system is cool, the button pressing thing. Didn't they make a shitty sequel though?
Someone explain me what was good about it so maybe I'll give it another try.
Raptor: Call of the Shadows. I almost registered that one, spent a long time playing the shareware version.Oh yes, I loved this game.
Illbleed is a survival horror video game for the Sega Dreamcast. In it, players are tasked with guiding horror movie aficionado Eriko Christy through a deadly theme park riddled with booby-traps and monsters, relying on a heartbeat monitor and her own senses (some of which are conveyed through an in-game interface and others indirectly) to avoid being frightened to death. Should she make it out alive, the eccentric genius responsible for the park's creation, Micheal Reynolds, will reward Eriko with a hundred million dollar prize and leave the amusement park.
if you have to pause every 0.4 seconds that looks like a pretty bad gameIts actually not mandatory, you can go though the maze with out pausing much and still have a chance to avoid the enemy.
I loved "The Way" series, its the first rpgmaker game that actually kept me excited..unlike all the other games that I just play when im bored and got nothing else to play...
Otomon, little known, please. The Way is probably the most popular rpgmaker series ever.
There's a difference between a game being indie and with a game being little known. Little known implies not alot of people know about it.
Oh no you got me there! I am amazed by your logic! Im soo dumb! *sarcasm*ganfewnrfjkanfjkdsjkaf
Another little know game is Dooms series, best rpgmaker game imo

Not like GROUNDBREAKING or anything, but it had an interesting cast of characters and the story was rather interesting. But yeah, you should try it out anyway.
Legend of Dragoon is great though. I'm aware it's really traditional and the story seems like some homage to shallow RPG stories with lots of twists and cliches and it's kinda slow and the translation is pretty horrible but for one reason or another I still enjoyed it a lot.
bomberman 64 (the video isn't too great but has lots of FOOTAGE)
i used to be a HUGE bomberman fan and i remember i was looking forward to this game before it was out. when it came out it was actually good however many people did not think this. what's really amazing to me is how much STUFF there was to do in the game. every level you play you maybe only see something like 50% of it, but to get all the GOLD CARDS you need to look around and do puzzles. the gold card thing isn't stupid either, because getting them all unlocks an entire new level (there are 5 normal levels, and the hidden one). if you do everything the game is probably 25 hours long. in addition to the single player being good the multiplayer was also pretty good as you would expect from a bomberman game. from what i know bomberman is basically some retarded anime bullshit game now, this was probably the last GOOD bomberman game.
the game isn't the greatest thing ever, but it's a lot better than people gave it credit for.
I played a small amt. of Baroque and I Really liked it :D
Shame that I Don't own the PS :'(
bomberman 64 (the video isn't too great but has lots of FOOTAGE)DUDE. Yes. Bomberman 64 was awesome. I wasted so many hours on that game. I saw they had a new Bomberman for the Wii, and it looked like it was gonna be Bomberman 64 but with mini-games thrown in as an option. It turns out it was the worst purchase I have ever made. Terrible, terrible game. Candidate for the worst game ever, actually.

HYBRID HEAVEN
I played the gamecube version of Gun and it is genuinely one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. Maybe the worst! I haven't really thought about it hard enough.
Like, it reminds me of those old shitty NES games they used to put out back before developers knew how to properly make videogames. You start off thinking "heh it's so bad it's almost funny", but 45 minutes later, all you can think about is how unfortunate your life is to be playing Gun alone at 11pm on a friday night
This one.Yeah Dynamite Headdy was (and still is) one of my favorite games. It's so freaking hard but the levels, enemies, boss fights, and system in general are a testament to how well Treasure understands platforming.
(Dynamite Headdy boxart)
I could never beat it, but I loved it lots.
Nocturnal Illusion..... One of the best games of all time. :shh:What are you talking about? The game was linear, you got whoever you chose at the end.
I was never able to get myself the Maid though. Which was sort of sad, she was cute.
I remember that I kept dying against gun wielding opponents in Bushido Blade 2. Was I supposed to defend the exact moment they fired?
I could list many games. This topic actually brought back many memories when I was a kid and games weren't really into the habits of small kids (I was like 4). I had the luck to have a dad in the computer industry and we had a computer which was really neat back then. I especially remember a game I played which I don't remember its name but it had a kid with a helmet which was yellow with green and white stripes I think and he ventured in a world with potato enemies and other weird people. In the first version he used to throw bombs but in the sequel he had a gun and other stuff that made you jump higher or whatever. If anyone could help me find the name for this game it would be awesome. I think the hero was named Ken or something like that. He also had a spaceship in the latest game. I think a GW member used to have an avatar of the guy.Commander Keen?

Guardians Crusade was another totally amazing Playstation RPG that hardly anyone heard of.
I dunno maybe Bushido Blade 2 was theoretically better but I just thought Bushido Blade 1 was so minimal or something and I thought some of the ideas were badass like you have to not kill your friends to get the good ending
Also didn't Bushido Blade 1 have bigger environments for some reason - I remember you could fight in a forest of bamboo and actually cut down the trees, that was badass
You are Twinsen, a young male Quetch living a bizarre world named Twinsun. Twinsun is a world that is balanced between two suns. Living on this land are 4 races—Quetches (humanoids), Rabbibunnies (rabbit like creatures), Grobos (elephant like creatures), and Spheroids (sphere shaped creatures). The land has been under the ruthless dictatorship of the evil Dr Funfrock, who has outlawed, among others, all discussions on the Legend of Sendell, the planet’s goddess. When Twinsen begins to talk openly about his mystical dreams of this legend and the impending destruction of Twinsun, he is thrown into the asylum. You must help Twinsen to escape from the asylum, travel to Fortress Island, save his wife, defeat the evil Dr Funfrock, solve the Legend of Sendell, and save the world.Little Big Adventure plays entirely from an isometric perspective, unlike it's sequel. Both games are quite similar but have a very different feel, the original being a much darker world that has been overrun by the evil Dr FunFrock and his cloned army. In the second game you are a proven hero but in the first game people are less willing to trust you and is definately a harder, sometimes frustrating experience. The behaviour mode is quite unique (You can switch between normal, athletic, agressive and sneaky modes at any time). Overall, it's just as enjoyable as it's sequel with it's great moments and interesting story-telling with unique characters in a world that you will want to explore.
Like its predecessor, LBA2 is real-time adventure. It combines several action game/arcade sequences and some elements from the role-playing game genre. The game's gameplay is partially free-roaming, allowing the player to travel around the islands once they have been "unlocked" by completing certain objectives; there are also many tasks which are optional or non-linear. Certain locations in the game are initially blocked from the player until they progress to a certain stage. This game is just a ton of fun to play and the game world is awesome to explore. It's short and sweet with varied gameplay. The graphics and animation are done really well and the characters are all unique with unique voice-overs for all dialogue. The gameplay is split up into outdoor areas which are fully 3D and the indoor areas which use the isometric engine from the first game. The game plays like an action-adventure game, but it also has RPG/Puzzle elements that aren't too deep but keep things interesting. I like how the planets themselves are very different, each of them contain unique species and have their own associated music and their own currency and technology. If you like quirky games like Beyond Good & Evil, definately check these out if you haven't already.
Interactivity with the world is important in Little Big Adventure. Almost all characters can be talked to, and enemies are often performing tasks while the game world is active. The artificial intelligence in the game was particularly groundbreaking at the time, with enemies often running to alarms to alert other guards to the player's location, opposed to games like Doom released in the same timeframe where enemies can only chase and shoot at the player.
You might be familiar with these games but they were pretty obscure, especially outside Europe. When it came to releasing the games internationally, EA renamed both of the games because they were afraid people would think the games were too kiddy (Most developers were making very mature games, LBA was intentionally quite unique.)

There are a bunch of videos on youtube, so if I haven't convinced you - Check out the gameplay and decide for yourself.
Lufia the Legend Returnsyeah, this game was pretty awesome. the battle system was pretty unique too and I thought it was pretty good. though it was really easy to beat those bosses you weren't supposed to beat the first time around and get their awesome equipment.

This was actually one of the best rpg's I've ever played for a hand held. A semi decent storyline with a nice plot twist towards the end and a few nice if not difficult side quests.
Azure Dreams
The game involves a boy named Koh from the town of Monsbaiya, which is set at the foot of the gigantic Monster Tower, which houses a plethora of monsters and bizarre creatures. At the age of fifteen, Koh has come of age and is entitled to enter the tower to slay monsters and live up to his missing father's reputation, his father being the greatest monster hunter who ever lived.

I put some serious hours into this game as a kid. I remember trading in Lunar Silver Story Complete(PSX) for it when it first came out =/
Commander Keen?
Yeah that's it!
Like, dude.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Keen_series
Like, seriously. How did you manage to forget Commander Keen? I mean, really now. Doesn't everyone who knows about DOS know about Commander Keen? I'm shocked that you managed to avoid it on the internet.
The first version you talk about is actually commonly referred to as Keen 3.5, the only game in the series without the raygun and pogo stick, which was developed between the original trilogy and the later three. Keen 4 was about the first computer game I ever played, and it's still my favorite platformer ever. Man, I was totally straight for Billy Blaze.
yeah, this game was pretty awesome. the battle system was pretty unique too and I thought it was pretty good. though it was really easy to beat those bosses you weren't supposed to beat the first time around and get their awesome equipment.
also pretty much no one played GOD HAND which is disappointing because I think it's the best game ever made.
also I hated Illusion of Gaia for some reason. Meant to try Terranigma but never did. I remembed IoG looking better but Terranigma seems to have that familiar RPG look to itTerranigma is much better. A lot of people don't like Illusion of Gaia (I did), but like Terranigma.
