Title: I GOT HIDEO KOJIMA'S AUTOGRAPH *UPDATED*
Post by: pburn on June 06, 2008, 09:00:48 pm
Now that MGS4 is coming up, Konami is having a METAL GEAR SOLID WORLD TOUR which is basically staff members going around the world to sign shit. Hideo Kojima, Yoji Shinkawa, David Hayter, Yumi Kikuchi, Ken Imaizumi and Ryan Payton. Keep in mind they're not all signing at the same place, instead being split up around the world.

In America, Kojima and Kikuchi will sign in NYC on the 12th at the Virgin Megastore for the midnight launch of the game. At the same time Yoji Shinkawa will be doing the midnight show in Japan, while David Hayter + Ryan Payton take on California. At the end they'll all reunite in SAN FRANCISO, where I won't be at. :(

http://www.konami.jp/mgs4/world/index_en.html

Basically I plan on attending both Kojima and Kikuchi NYC sessions. I'm wondering if anyone wants to meet up because well, I'm going to be spending 9+ hours on a line? Plus I'm a minor so I need someone to buy the game for me.

Dammit, it's too late, can't call or text him anymore, either. No Kojima for me.

Man Psyburn, why would you stand in line for 9 hours to see a man who mightn't even look at you and probably doesn't care about you

Also, just get your dad to buy the game for you.

Strangeluv, sorry but you will never understand what it's like to have a hero. Also, he's no William Shatner, I know that based on personal testimonials.

Yeah, my dad will probably come with me. Only he's a really boring person, so it'll be terrible to wait 9+ hours in a line with him. Since Virgin only lets you get one item - THEIR ITEM - signed, I'll end up with two signed MGS4's. I'll sneak in a copy of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake which he WILL SIGN. Than I'll go home to GameStop, pick up my copy of the LE and go to his second signing, get that signed and another item I have at home.

I can't guarantee I will be able to get the autograph for either of the signings. The first one is at midnight, but the earliest I can show up is after my school exams. 1 hour train ride, taxi, etc will probably be 1-2 hours. So maybe 2:30-3:00pm? which is 8 hours early. The second one is very slim as it is at 5:00pm, and my school ends at 12:30. If I don't either well, I'll be very miserable as I've literally had dreams about meeting Kojima for the past 6 years.

I'll probably sell off one of the copies on eBay for to cover all the costs + extra. Not sure if I want to wait a month to get Lee Meriwhether to autograph them before that.

he seemed like an alright guy when i meet him... doesn't speak much(if any) English though
Yeah, he seems to have some very limited skill though. At the London signing he signed "NO PLACE FOR HIDEO" by a fan's request. Also during one of the podcasts he said "....Ai....rei...k..... de...de uhh...movie...loganz...run.."

Like I don't KNOW THEM but I've seen them each time the last 4 years so it is kind of creepy that someone from (*checks Liman's profile*) BLOODY SWEDEN OF ALL PLACES should post a picture of them.

Better. I will say their dedicated to.. whatever reason it is they wanted to dress up like Kingdom Hearts characters. Something like this would never reach New Zealand so it kinda sucks really if I did ever want Kojimas autograph or pay a ridiculous amount of money for it online.

jesus christ man there is just so much wrong with this post

could you really not pick a better hero than kojima?  is this really the MOST IMPRESSIVE GUY you could come up with?  waiting nine hours in line is beyond me for something as worthless as an autographed game and being "very miserable" if you miss it because you've been dreaming of the day you would meet him for years apparently is actually legitimately kind of disturbing.  i can't believe your dad would put up with this shit.

I mean he's a celeb but even in line for Barack Obama was like less than 4 hours.

then again you weren't really shaking his hand so I guess 9 hours is a good estimate.

Yeah I could, but I'm kinda dumb. I decided to arrive 7 hours early than the originally scheduled 9, hopefully it will still work out. Also, in no way is an autographed metal gear game worthless. I get a little obsessive and crazy about getting autographs and shit so............ Tbh my dad doesn't really need to put up with it because I don't really talk about Kojima.

Ok, so I'm going tomorrow right after exams. Who's goin'?

I collect autographs, stuff from game developers are usually much harder to get than with anyone else. Barack Obama does a shitload of public appearances. I've always showed up 1-2 hours early for most signings like Bill Cosby and Gene Hackman, and I'm usually one of the first few to get something signed. At conventions I never had to wait longer than like 15 minutes. Hell, at a Nicolas Cage signing it went so fast I didn't have to wait at all. The longest I had to wait was 4 hours for Bruce Campbell, because the system was fucked.

Shigeru Miyamoto was one of the very first people I went to see, I waited on line for more than 4 hours and I didn't even get in. Many game devs have grown large fan bases; they don't normally do appearances and aren't paid to sign anything.

well you really don't meet these people. considering how apparently hundreds of other people are lining up for this, he'll see some metal gear developer for 10 seconds up close, get an autograph, and then leave. this just seems pretty ridiculous for a squiggle of lines on a game or photo. if he enjoys doing this there's no harm done really, but you have to admit it's a pretty strange fascination. i can maybe understand celebrities more, even though i still think that makes no sense, you could probably GET MONEY from selling that kind of stuff. with a game developer more or less it's just sentimental value. also do any of these people speak english even?

also i think it is pretty funny how some people who meet CELEBS will say "hey i saw john malkovich walking down the street and i said hi to him. he seemed like a great guy!". no one in the topic is really saying this, but i hear it all the time and it's pretty funny how people will create this image for someone based off seeing them for 5 seconds.

Very true.

However, I just want to point out that places like eBay often get more money for game developer autographs than from celebrities. A signed copy of Ninja Gaiden DS went for like $80 a few months back; due to forgeries and the large market, even reputable dealers(including outside of eBay) won't easily sell a Tom Cruise for $80.

Post by: pburn on June 12, 2008, 11:34:57 pm
This is my story. Sorry about the shitty photos. Also I forgot like half the shit because it was like half a day and I haven't gotten any sleep.

I originally planned to leave right after school around 1:00pm for the midnight signing at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square.. Hideo Kojima and Yumi Kikuchi(Raging Raven). However some guy who attended the London signing said it was too early. I've been scared and nervous about this signing for a while. I've been scarred by the Shigeru Miyamoto signing and thought I wouldn't get in. I was scared I couldn't get my Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (Which cost a fortune) signed. I was scared that I was a minor and they wouldn't sell me the game. Ton's of shit.

I packed my bag, complete with DS games, PSP, and my prized Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. I left at 2:30 and to the Virgin Megastore at around 4:30. I saw a line, it disconnected, I walked to the other... it disconnected... I was maybe on like the 5th group of 50 people. I was REALLY SCARED I wouldn't get an autograph. There I met some pretty cool people. One guy from neogaf, gametrailers etc. I went around to all the lines looking for members of MGS:TUS, which is apparently the largest metal gear fansite; nobody showed up.

I checked out the front of the line too, and I saw just the worst group of people imaginable. They were really really creepy. I felt bad for Kojima.

I heard that fat chick yelling in her phone "WE BE ON THE LINE FOR 20 HOURS, HAHA WE ARE SO HARDCORE."

From there I  met some people and I guess we just chilled for 8 hours or so. In these kinda situations I tend to get hyperactive. My head started to hurt, I was twitching a lot and just bullshitted for the whole time. Some people thought I was drunk, high, one guy even told me that I was in danger of a restraining order. We played Nintendo DS, walked around, ate mcdonalds, people said I was crazy, whatever. The people were really tight, I just don't feel like elaborating this part because it was 8 hours of shitting.

As the night went past, I felt fucking beat. I was tired and whatever. I felt really brain dead. I was not functioning correctly at all. After 10:00pm people would start screaming and shit. Every time that happened I'd run down the side walk as fast as I could. Usually it could be some sort of interview thing.

This one dude with a camera was pretty chill, he was the HIP HOP GAMER. ( http://www.myspace.com/hiphopgamer http://www.youtube.com/jackal33 ). His business card said "THE NEXT#1 ARTIST THE NEXT #1 JOURNALIST ARE YOU READY?". Jesus, it was epic.

One of the times when I was running down the street, I saw this large warehouse door opening. I saw two Kojima productions staff members signaling this white van to drive in. And through the tinted windshields I saw figures. I felt the connection. It... was... Kojima.

After a long time I just started freaking out more than usual. The line started to move eventually. Again I was just DEAD BEAT. After all "EVIL IS POWERFUL, BUT COURAGE IS SOLID"

More bullshit, more bullshit. They finally let us in. I was scared as fuck I wouldn't get in, but I managed to get in moderately early compared to most. I got to the basement. I got to the cashier. I bought a copy of the game.

I got on the autograph line. But wait, someone was signing on the side of the line.... Who...who was he? It... it was CHRISTOPHER RANDOLPH (Otacon). He just, showed up. I was shocked and happy. But than after a while he just left the line, however I saw him going off to the other side.

I was near the table. I took out the sleeves for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake which I accidental slightly dented. I took out the MGS4 sleeve. I knew I could only get one item signed, but it was a relief that they said ANY ONE ITEM. I was still tense, the MG2 was the MOST IMPORTANT ITEM FOR ME TO GET SIGNED. The other was not, but I really wanted to try to get it cast signed. They had three staff members standing right next to them to enforce policies.

I was the only one with a copy of MG2 for Kojima to sign. I was probably the only one in his whole world tour who had a copy of MG2. I've read stories about how he'd sign his own MSX copies and exclaim "SUGOI DESU-NE".

I came up to the table. The sleeve went down on the table. I saw Kojima tilt his head down towards the sleeve. I saw the standard expression on his face. But the tilt turned into a near headbutt to the table. His hands weren't on the table anymore. They were hanging down in surprise.

"WHOOOOOOOOOAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW" Hideo exclaimed. The way he said it was almost like a stereotypical skater dude.

I began to realize the truth in my heart.

His dulled black sharpie started to move, but before it touched the surface of paper he stopped himself for a split second. He put it down, and took out a brand new silver marker.

I knew.

The cap of the maker came off, the tip touched the sleeve. Compared to the other items he signed, there was a look of precision on his face. His hands acted in a punctilious manner.

When the ink began to spread across the black surface, I knew I was hardcore. More hardcore than anyone on the line, the message boards, the world...

And soon... it was autographed. My expensive game was now worth gold.

I moved on to Kikuchi and had her sign my MGS4 sleeve. I said "Thank you very much" and walked over to where Christopher Randolph was signing for some people. I handed him my sleeve and said "I really appreciate you coming down here", he just looked at me, signed it, and handed it back.

The moments I've been waiting years.. years for...

By the time I exited the store it was 1:30am. I had exams the next day, but more importantly I had to get to Penn Station to catch a 1:49am train. Otherwise I'd be stuck in NYC for 4 hours. I got a taxi, got driven over, and ran down the steps into the train. Finally as I began to relax into the seat, I allowed myself to enjoy my most powerful and memorable possessions.

Arigato Gomaimasu Kojima-san...

No, because I'm hardcore.

I mean they weren't like "YOu'RE ANNOYING DRUNK". It was more like LOL UR DRUNK. They were cool about it, it was just all chillin' y'know. One of the more badass cosplayers and I started singing the Snake Eater theme. It was cool

Hideo Kojima knows limited English.

By limited English I mean....REALLY limited English. Like probably 5 words maybe.

Psyburn, that's really cool. I know a lot of people here don't really get this kind of stuff but I think that's pretty badass. Fuck you for having a legit MG2 copy and getting that shit signed. Fuck you for getting the only silver marker signature too.

Yeah man, I mean, I probably wouldn't have been that excited (I haven't played any Metal Gear games besides Acid, which doesn't count very much, but I should have a copy of MGS in the next few weeks) but knowing you ACHEIVED A DREAM makes me feel really, really good.  The excitement just sort of rubbed off I guess!

Actually in NY, if you're slightly weird, people think you're drunk or high, especially if you're a teenager because chances are,  you are high or drunk.

Also, I would not wait in line for that long. I saw this guy dressed up as Solid Snake at Times Square today though.

EDIT: Psyburn, if you were really hardcore, and you dreamed of this moment forever, you would've learned Japanese so you could speak to him.  :fogetbackflip:

Congrats on getting your shit signed.

Why was he surprised by that game? Is it rare or something, I don't get why he was surprised you brought him something he made to sign even though most people were just getting mgs4 signed

I thought it was really funny how you thought FREAKS at that fat girl or whatever but a lot of other people in the line obviously thought the same about you. restraining order indeed.....

Like headphonics, most people don't talk about his early work anymore. But the major thing is that MG2:SS is a very rare game. It's not very often that he signs MSX games.

EDIT:
Some guy took photos of everyone in line

I don't care much for most of this story, but

the fact you brought MG2 and had him sign it is very smart and cool, actually. Not only were you the only guy in the line to get a reaction out of him, you probably made him pretty happy. And, I'm sure you weren't the only one hoping to achieve a dream, but you sure achieved it better than anyone else.

Man, that was a great story, but you still should have said something to him... Just pick words that he'd probably heard before. Picture it: you go in, he's sitting there, you toss him a copy of the game to sign, he autographs it, and in the split second he pauses to hand it back, you lean forward and say "cheeseburger spiderman dollars" or something. He'd have been confused and slightly freaked out, and in that one second you'd have strucken a blow for anyone who played MGS2.

Also, are you going to sell the cover once it reaches a certain level of value or is it a 'pass on to my grandchildren' kind of thing?

Those guys are just stupid.  Why get it before a PS3 when chances are that there will be copies of the game available by the time they buy the system?

to get it signed by hideo kojima/just in case there's an error in an early copy/because they can.

Errors in anything make them sell for more if they get fixed quickly to collectors. I've seen like Yu-Gi-Oh! cards with no name that go for like 5x the price (in the hundred dollar range, basically), or even just a simple typo on a game case or something dumb like that can really add to the price when you sell it.

Because collectors like to collect this shit.

Yeah, it's funny. I had a talk with Handsome Lamb and I estimated that the autographs on a game would go around $200. Yeah, that's an expensive game but overall it's not that valuable. Go buy a painting or something.

Those 300 limited sleeves that goes for at least $399 right now are what can become somewhat valuable though. Everyone else thought they were clever and got the game signed when they should have tried to obtain something far more exclusive. At least you got that MG2 thingy signed, that's good.

ya but dude for a normal signature okay but i was pretty sure we were talking about MG2 with Kojima silver marker signature (the only mg2 i know that was signed by him lately (possibly ever), and the only thing to be signed in silver prettysure too) which would obviously be worth WAY WAY more than 200$.

hell mg2 by itself is easily close to the 200$ range now, I think.

Its crazy how being famous literally gives you the power to multiply by ten the value of ANYTHING within reach if you have a pen ready.

Also I think the idea of buying an autographed item on ebay is pretty dumb!
I mean. copying a signature is very ELEMENTARY. You just need to have a photo of the real signature, practice a bit and poof, you are kojima, and if you did it nicely enough, there is no way to tell its fake. That is a little too much trust-based for my tastes! Who knows how many of the "autographed" items on ebay are real?
Unless the item has some sort of proof with it somehow, like, a photo of the signing.

Well if you scroll up I'm in the beginning of the video there talking to that dude.

But uh, I remember there were LOTS of people screaming Kojima for cameramen. It depends on which ones. Every time someone started screaming that night I ran as fast as I could to find out what was going on. I remember Konami cameramen recording people screaming KOJIMA and I randomly ran up behind them yelling. On line I was near the Irish bar there.

EDIT:
This is why I make these topics in advance, so GWers will ignore me. :(

At the London signing he signed "NO PLACE FOR HIDEO" by a fan's request.

That was my friend. He also said to Psyburn's hero 'I'll see you when mgs5 is out' to which Psyburn's hero chuckled.

PSYBURN'S HERO.
