...for me to ever buy a Square Enix product again!
I am utterly appalled by the decision to make this game XBox-exclusive. Not only can I not afford an XBox on top of a PS3, I also have a personal vow to never buy a game system by Microsoft, since I'm a purist and believe Microsoft should just stick to computers and leave games to Sony and Nintendo. But, NO, Square Enix had to go and make the game exclusive to an inferior system that's sold a mere 11 copies in Japan. I mean Blue Dragon didn't increase 360 sales over there, so what the fuck is SE thinking!?
Rant over. Discuss this game.
-
Inferior? Sure whatever man. I think money is the reason behind this. If it's anything like the 3rd I don't think you would be missing out on much.
-
uh??
Microsoft has been making games long before Sony. Not Nintendo, but definitely Sony. So...whatever.
They've been making game systems before Sony too...hello Windows 95/98. Yes, those are game systems too.
Basically just sounds like you're a fanboy. The reason the X-Box doesn't sell in Japan is because the Japanese hate American stuff (nothing American made sells well over there), and Blue Dragon was a terrible game. The X-Box 360 is currently out selling the PlayStation 3 by nearly double world-wide, so whatever.
It's called business, get over it. It's happened before, it'll happen again.
Like Tau said, looking at SO3, you're not missing much anyways.
-
i think i will buy this so i have something to hate
it has been a while since i have HATED AN RPG i kinda miss it!

whoa, you're pump.

I was with you until that part. What about the iPod? Also, Japanese people love American shows like 24 (rating are actually better in Japan for said show). The Japanese people dont like American stuff is the most false argument evar.
Also, the 360 more than double thing... how'd you get that?
But on topic: Microsoft is just trying to keep their library diverse; which was one of their criticisms from last gen. People in Japan are not the only ones that like RPGs! Also, this makes the competition between the 360 and the PS3 alot more interesting dont you think?
-
Correction: japanese people dislike american games.
Not all of them, but a large portion of them. If you want an example, look for an article titled something like "Where a game named Mother 3 beats the sales of Halo 2" or something like that. It talks about certain gaming shops in Japan having only a little section allocated to the american industry. It's the only corner of the shop where you find american games and the 360.

wow guys thanks for taking an obviously related to gaming post and twisting it to everything. i'm sure it was probably bad wording on my part too but this is a topic about a game, and nothing American made game-wise does sell well over in Japan.
lso, the 360 more than double thing... how'd you get that?
Any not-biased sales report on the consoles ever. Wii is ~21.8m, X-Box 360 has ~18.9m, and PS3 has ~9.9m as of last reports. (PS3 is probably a bit higher since MGS4 was released, but still.)
-
If you have seen the trailer, you just know it's gonna be exactly like Star Ocean 3. PSEUDO-SCIFI because you actually only go to another planet and then you go back to swords and magic.
I remember when I played Star Ocean 3 and it was a pretty huge letdown after Star Ocean 2. There was no real objective in the story and you just wandered from one town to another visiting random dungeons for all kinds of stupid reasons. And the little potential the story had was ruined once you got to the second half of the game, and anyone who has played Star Ocean 3 knows that 4D realm is the worst twist in the history of JRPG's and the ending was hilariously bad and didn't even make any sense. Star Ocean 3's voice acting was pretty horrible and they watered down Star Ocean 2's fantastic skill system. The battle system was great though, and remains as one of my favorite battle systems. It's a shame that the default difficulty was WAY too easy so beating the game didn't take much effort and the battle system's potential wasn't used to the fullest. Even despite Star Ocean 3's faults, I still kinda liked it. Maybe it's because it was fun to play and it had some nice locations and the soundtrack was pretty solid. I basically liked it for the same reasons as I like Star Ocean 2, though I much prefer the characters and locations of Star Ocean 2, and the story was better too even though it was pretty average as well.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure rami and I are going to get Star Ocean 4 anyway but I'm not horribly optimistic about it like I was about Star Ocean 3. At least that way I won't be disappointed when it turns out to be another Star Ocean 3.
-
microsoft dont make computers what are you talking about?

I know it had almost double sales but you stated that it was "currently" outselling it by double. The PS3 has been outselling the 360 in Europe (as a whole) since November last year and in the US (which is the 360 strongest market by far) the PS3 out sold the 360 4 out of 5 months (that there are numbers for).
-
It is currently outselling it by double, by units, world wide.
-
well what could you expect with hero names like Edge Maverick and Reimi Saionji.
-

Not according to Media Create, Chart Track, and NPD.
-
I have been under the impression that PS3 has been outselling 360 for a while now, but I don't care enough to actually go out of my way and read some official numbers or anything, I just recall hearing that somewhere.
But... I thought this topic is about Star Ocean 4. :(
-
this sounds like another bad japanese style rpg. i played the first star ocean and from what i hear it gets worse from there, and at this point i am not prepared to even listen to anyone arguing for the merits of this awful game template that is perpetuated by idiots who do things like take vows against game consoles.
i mean lost oddyssey was the last japanese rpg i played - one of the most recent released - and it is so bad - it is so bad - that at various points in the game i was brought to laughter at the unoriginality, triteness and stupidity of every single "gameplay" element they shoved in. lost oddyssey could have been created on the NES and from a gameplay standpoint it would be identical.
this perception that japanese people dislike foreign games is the only reason why:
I also have a personal vow to never buy a game system by Microsoft, since I'm a purist and believe Microsoft should just stick to computers and leave games to Sony and Nintendo
-
Star Ocean 3 was pretty bad, especially the story. I couldn't even tell what was going on, and they threw ridiculous plot twists at the end of the game. Star Ocean 2 was a pretty good game though, probably the best out of all of them.
Depending on the reviews, I might pick the game up since I'm a sucker for games like Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata. Personally, I'm looking forward to the Star Ocean remake on the PSP more than this.
By the way, the protagonist looks too much like the hero of Star Ocean 3 already except he has blonde hair. What the hell.

You're correct, I had my cache wrong on the site xD. After hard refreshing, it is now 19 million for XB360, 12 million for PS3, and 24.4 million for Wii, world-wide, as of April. The PS3 got a huge sale increase from the price drop.
Anyways...
SO4 is gonna be some lame-o SO3-esque Sci-Fi Fantasy game. It's gonna blow. This much is fatally obvious.
-
so2 WAS the best game out of the series, but it still wasn't fantastic. it was just an ACCEPTABLE jrpg, where so3 was really just intolerably bad to me (but thank you first 5 pages of so3 topic telling me to rush out and buy it because it was amazing)
well what could you expect with hero names like Edge Maverick and Reimi Saionji.
well right off the bat it is better than FAYT LEINGOD
also i've also heard the ps3 is outselling the 360. it sells about five times as well in japan because the japanese are apparently ethnocentric fucks and scoff and the large majority of american electronics, and i think it's outselling it by a pretty wide margin in europe too. i dunno if darknecrid's sales figures are accurate!
-
Edge Maverick is still quite a stupid name.
On the scale of names, from worst to best, you have like...
*japenese names* --------------------- Fayt Leingod - Edge Maverick ------------------------------------------------- Normal names
-
I think lamb is just trying to say that overall the 360 has sold more, and people got confused cos he said 'currently' which isn't true because the PS3 is 'currently' outselling the 360. Couldn't really give a shit regardless, all the systems are going fine and nobody is gonna die because of the sales this generation.
Topic creator, you're an idiot. When the PSOne came out did you say "I WON'T BUY THIS BECAUSE THEY MAKE TVS AND WALKMANS NOT GAMES GOSH!". Or even, if you were old enough, when the NES came out did you say "A TRADING CARD COMPANY MAKING GAMES? PFFT FUCK THIS!". I thought people would be smart enough to realise the 'console war' is dumb because all the systems are pretty good in their own ways and it's all personal preference. My friend is a massive Nintendo fanboy but he still has a PS3 and 360 because he's not a moron.
I'll probably buy Star Ocean 4 but I don't love the series overall. 3 had a pretty great battle system and not much else. I'll just pick it up for an RPG fix.
-
Edge Maverick sounds like a megaman game's boss instead of an RPG char :)
And the little potential the story had was ruined once you got to the second half of the game, and anyone who has played Star Ocean 3 knows that
Gotta give them a little credit for trying something different than most games tho, even if it still ended up as a save the world story.
Anyone got a link to the so4 trailer?

no man FAYT LEINGOD is definitely way way worse than random japanese names imo, especially considering the game is japanese. it is a perfect example of how pretty much no one in the gaming industry has any idea how to convey a message without bludgeoning you over the head with it.
also people rave about so3's battle system but it was actually really fucking terrible from my experience with it. like, NOT GOOD OR FUN AT ALL. first of all, the difficulty/pacing was ridiculous; you would fight random creatures in dungeons that were SUBSTANTIALLY MORE DIFFICULT than the boss of the very same dungeons. what the fuck is that? also, the ai was really god awful (HAMMEROFMIGHTHAMMEROFMIGHTHAMMEROFMIGHTHAMMEROFMIGHTHAMMEROFMIGHTHAMMEROF) and you couldn't really rely on them to do anything but spam their abilities until their magic points or whatever ran out, and you couldn't let them use items either, because they'd spam the shit out of them too and you could only carry a limited amount so they'd run out of them in like thirty seconds. this was compounded by the fact that the options for controlling the ai were all really basic and limiting and not especially useful at all. it was all just stuff like "attack with full power" and "don't attack at all", or "use items" and "don't use items at all". where's the middle ground? that was a pretty big reason that your guys would either stand there doing nothing or run around overusing their abilities while still somehow managing to avoid actually hitting anyone with them. the same went for cure spells, so i pretty much had to use berries and heals manually anytime someone got low, because the ai just couldn't be trusted with it. this happened pretty frequently because they took way too much damage.
also like ds said it is easy. not just easy but retardedly easy. i was bad at it initially because i assumed there was a sense of rhythm required to execute combos and whatnot. WRONG. you just hammer x and o nonstop for the entire battle and that is usually enough if you don't have to spend too much time trying not to let your party members get themselves killed. there's no challenge to it whatsoever. ds said you gotta beat the game to unlock a decent difficulty setting but if you have to BEAT A BAD GAME to make it marginally less bad, then that is not really worth it i do not think. so yeah it was boring, mindless button-mashing, and it had poor difficulty that was either stupidly easy or alarmingly hard, plus the ai was really some of the worst i've played in recent memory and pretty unreliable. and also only being able to carry a small amount of items was dumb and unnecessary and probably some lame attempt at making the game challenging/realistic. i can't really think of a single redeeming thing about the battle system!
-
i think i will buy this so i have something to hate
it has been a while since i have HATED AN RPG i kinda miss it!
I think I will force myself to like it so I can argue against you!

it's.... it's a date

well obviously he is cosplaying as fayt leingod duh
-
Wow, is that the main character? Looks like :blarg:
but I CANT WAIT FOR THIS!!!! SO3 is like one of my most favorite game ever! I remember those "challenges" or whatever you had to do and I remember having done almost 80% of them! Oh man, talking about it makes me wanna play it again.

Give me a fucking break buster think about what you are typing.

Oh I noticed something about Star Ocean just now.
Ratix Farrence(SO1) - Blue hair
Claude Kenni(SO2) - Blonde hair
Fayt Leingod(SO3) - Blue hair
Edge Maverick(SO4) - Blonde hair
One can guess what the next hero will be from Yoshinori Yamagishi and his love for the blues and blondes.
Yeah I forgot to mention Star Ocean 3 was way too easy. If you ever got double experience you were pretty much guaranteed five level ups as long as you were in the right dungeon. They tried to limit it by making it so if you ever turned the game off the boost would be gone, but it was still really dumb. The bosses were the most ridiculous I've ever seen, and it's the only game where they reward you for beating a boss in less than 20 seconds.
By the way, here is the trailer for the game.

You guys should watch the trailer.. Star Ocean The Last Hope! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3kjORB9j6Q) The characters have adult bodys but you wouldn't think it when you see their faces.. *sigh*

So 360 has 7 million more and was released a year earlier when it was the only next gen console out? No wonder it sold more than the PS3. I just hate the Xbox so much because I am sick of "mainstream" gamers saying that it is SO godly, when it only has maybe two good games.
Sorry, I'm in a hate Microsoft mood right now :\

See how dumb you're sounding right now? Get over the whole Microsoft thing already.

Yeah cause Playstation 3 fans are so humble. (http://www.sonydefenseforce.com/) :hmm:
Do you honestly care if one console out sells the other?(Unless you work in the industry of course) Maybe which game ends up being a "Halo killer" anymore bullshit console war things people follow. Honestly it's so fucken stupid.

Basically, your opening post blows. As PTizzle said: "When the PSOne came out did you say "I WON'T BUY THIS BECAUSE THEY MAKE TVS AND WALKMANS NOT GAMES GOSH!". Or even, if you were old enough, when the NES came out did you say "A TRADING CARD COMPANY MAKING GAMES? PFFT FUCK THIS!"."
Companies change, because they are businesses. Nintendo changed their name to Nintendo from Marafuku, and changed from a card company (they still make cards in japan iirc) to a video game company. Sony is now a video game company as well as a TV company. Microsoft is now a video game company (well, they always have been, since Microsoft Games for the Windows 95.) besides an OS and Microsoft utilities and programs company.
Plus I believe you said that you're a purist and believe Microsoft should just stick to computers and leave games to Sony and Nintendo...
That means you shouldn't of bought a PS3 since Sony should just stick to TVs. They should just leave games to Nintendo...who you shouldn't buy from either because they make cards, so they should just leave games to....Atari, I guess.
People bought the 360 for other reasons besides it was the first nex-gen console.
The console war is stupid, and fanboys are stupid. The game industry is in a currently very unhealthy state and you have a bunch of children arguing over which console their mommy gave them is the best. It's sickening, and pretty much anyone who is a stupid fanboy and goes "i am SO HARDKORE" or "I AM MAINSTREAM" on any side is an idiot. Someone who plays games because they love games wouldn't care what console it is, or who is making it. The 360/PS3/Wii all have their pros/cons, and to say otherwise is ignorance. Support the industry, not a stupid company.
edit: wow i totally just sounded like GMJ...
EDIT:
I'm just gonna quote Yahtzee, because this is so true:
"I never really understand the crusader like fervor that consoles attract. Most people would say its because your mom is only prepared to buy you one console and if it turns out you didn't pick the winner, the best thing to do is to go into denial until the very fabric of reality changes because goddamnit that's more likely than you admitting faults. Speaking as a person who is white enough to afford all the consoles, this is the most balanced generation of all time, with it all coming down to what you personally want from a console. The Wii is an excitable little yappy bastard, good with children but a little exhausting. The PS3 is a big dependable black monster, slow but lovingly bring your slippers in the morning, and the 360 is a just all rounder that only occasionally pisses itself and dies."
edit edit:
lmao just saw the trailer
I think this sums up my opinion on it: :fogetlaugh:
-
Good lord I have never seen such a bad opening post in a long time.
-
Look I've said it before and I'll say it again
japanese need drugs badly
when they do we get cool shit like Earthbound and Mario and I mean even if it wasn't that we'd have better names than Fate Linegod lol
