of heart failure. He was 71.

LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was was 71.
Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.
Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
I really didn't expect him to die this decade, honestly. My dad's a pretty big fan of his and he's REALLY bummed out right now.
Goodnight, my dear Rufus.

oh damn. :(
i'm not really in to standup, but i actually liked this guy! i know my dad was a huge fan of his too.
-
haha for some reason i never realized rufus was played by george carlin, that makes him way cooler in my book. I never really dug his stand up much but it sucks he's gone
-
Only the good die young.
-
i wasn't the biggest fan of his stand up but from what i can tell he was a pretty damn decent guy and i'm surprised and sad at his death. i was just listening to an album of his the other day, i didn't know he was as old as 71.
he did do some cool stuff though. as overplayed as a lot of his bits are, his seven words you can't say bit and the 21st century man monologue are a couple of the outstanding things i can think of so yeah a sad event!
-
Man, I just heard about this.
This is a huge bummer. I usually don't feel all that emotional about famous people dying, but this is really making me feel sad.
RIP
-
This sucks. I thought he was pretty funny :(
I love his sketch about God and religion.
-
Holy shit... fuck this entire summer!
RIP George. I admit I wasn't some kind of huge fan, but still he has some pretty awesome stuff. Maaan.
-
wow i honestly saw this and thought it was one of those dumb 4chan "GOOD NIGHT SWEET PRINCE......." things but then i remember seeing his birthday in the paper a couple weeks ago and thinking it might be true.
this sucks!

AHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh
man, this sucks sososososos much...
I think he was probably my second favorite right after Hicks and now they're both dead. Atleast he had a damn good run and its a shame he's gone.
I'm gonna try to find a clip of one of my favorite bits by him right now if I can so you guys can see how awesome he really was despite that stupid list shit that kind of put me off.
its his take on the apocalypse when one event escalates into another and another, its sort of long but its worth watching. (Ignore the beginning bullshit and it ends at 6:30.)

I don't know what to say, honestly.. I idolized this guy. I listened to him weekly, read his books often, and generally hear his lines in my head almost daily.
This sucks. A lot.
-
Holyshit this is a big bomb. I'm glad nothing bad is happening right now. This is horrible news. He did some of the best standup. :fogetcry:
Though, he wasn't exactly young so it isn't that bad.

Same here. I'm kicking myself in the ass now for not going to see him when I had the chance.
-
aw man, this sucks! he was an old guy and all but fuck, there goes the last of the angry men in comedy.

someone new has gotta step up.......
-
Oh snap, that's terrible. Wasn't expecting that at all, what a bad piece of news. :(
Also he was only 71 man, you usually expect FAMOUS PEOPLE to live until their 80s or something!
-
This is insane, many icons have been dying this year, George Carlin was one that I strongly recognized and appreciated. A sad loss.
-
It's okay guys. In the future we will be able to go back in time and relive his standup comedy antics.
-
george carlin gives me a lot of inspiration
because he lived to the age of 71 having been an every day pot smoker for at least 30 years. 71 is old enough for me
-
God-fucking-dammit...
I loved this man.........
-
This sucks. I really didn't think this was true I was so shocked! He is one of those guys I expected to somehow just keep ticking forever somehow.
I thought he was really damn funny, and like I said this really sucks.

Yeah I Wish I Could Blaze Up For 30 Years :fogetlaugh:

I'll play some Carlin this weekend on the radio. We'll have a marathon. Old George was iconic, he deserves it.
-
I'm so glad I got to see him before he passed. He was the best.
-
Hopefully he didn't suffer from his theory of Frisbeetarianism and get stuck in the roof while trying to ascend into the afterlife... Then again, he prayed to Joe Pesci, so maybe Pesci will take a bat to the entire roof and let him out, eh?
Man, this guy was killer. My parents have a bunch of records of his from way back when (yes, records) and I remember listening to them with my brother back when we were a lot younger... Man, so sad.

George Carlin was pretty much the last person I expected to die
-
Tavis Smiley did a pretty sweet tribute to him on his show last night. Hooray for late night PBS programming lol
-
I'm listening to some of his standup now (never heard any before) he was a funny guy
I won't say rest in peace since it seems he wouldn't have approved.
-
Learning about his death was so sad for me. He was a great comedian.
-
Sad I heard this man stand up before and it was so funny sadly I saw this man alot when i was a kid form a show called Thomas the Tank Engine.
-
I'm sure he's up there right now, looking down on us... And I'm sure he's happy.
I remember when first hearing his New Jersey Special, I laughed so hard my throat was in severe pain... I was hoping he'd have at least another ten years in him... What a loss.
I saw him live once as well, I was a tremendous fan. I'll be attending his public memorial for sure.
-
i personally didn't like his humor, but i liked some of his social commentary to the extent that i respected him. but i haven't read the paper, been on line, listened to the radio, or read the news paper for about two weeks...
and then this happens
fuck man.
