Title: Cool stuff about the place you live.
Post by: Captain Mew on July 03, 2008, 07:23:06 pm
Name the city/town/etc. in which you live and some cool things about it like people from there or events which happened that are notable.

I live in Cumberland, MD.

William H. Macy was raised here (and was class of 1968 at my high school)
The creator of Dr. McNinja is from here (and also, the city is Dr. McNinja's hometown)
Eddie Deezen (Eugene from Grease and Mandark of Dexter's Lab) is from here, also went to my high school
The guitarist of Circa Survive lives right next door to me. (Well he used to, but his mom still does, in fact I just saw him ten minutes ago)
My high school's homecoming football game, according to cable network Versus, is apparently the 6th biggest football rivalry in the country, and NFL films filmed the most recent homecoming.
Ty Pennington of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition filmed downtown here the other day
The city was mentioned on the original Night of the Living Dead.

For a town of roughly 20,000, it's an impressive list.

I like Halifax because it's a smaller city with a unique feel to it. It has the urban look, but it has a more relaxed atmosphere and it's nice.. We have an impressive harbour, a rich history, and man.. Can't forget the restaurants. I think I heard on the radio that Halifax is one of the best places in Canada to eat in.

Also, Halifax being small really works for me, because it allows me to walk to work in a relatively short period of time.

We produced Marillion (which is always cool, and they sung a song about the Market square), we have famous DUCKS(aylesbury duck... world renouned) and two London Bombers (one failed, one successful, and also one of the key terrorist recruitment plces is OUR VERY OWN PRISON), we have one of England's ugliest buildings (I actually quite like it), Judge John Deed and the scene in Clockwork Orange where the old man was attacked were filmed here.
Ugh seriously this town is gay. Like the Marillion thing is cool, but regular stabbings and annual race riots (and daily drug raids) kinda wear it down.
I know this is POST INTERESTING THINGS but fuck it I just gave you everything ever notable that has something to do with Aylesbury.

NOTABLE THINGS:

I eat at the diner that Benny & Joon was filmed in quite often
We had a World's Fair in like 1972 I think
Bing Crosby was born here
The guys who do Penny Arcade are from here and (apparently) bitch about how terrible it is here quite often
David Lynch is from here which is pretty awesome
There was also a really bad Comedy Central show that was set here, called Dog Bites Man

Grunthor you're from Omaha right? Well I am and it kicks ass.

About Schmidt was filmed a few blocks away from where I am right now. Pretty sweet.
Musically we have Mannheim Steamroller, Brighteyes, 311, Cursive, and Tilly & the Wall, (Saddle Creek Records).
Nick Nolte and Chris Klein (sadly) are both from Omaha.

We also have Omaha Beef, which I suppose some of you fat people would recognize. Probly Doktormartini too.

I live in Linköping, Sweden.

In 1600 there were some executions on the main square which is somewhat ridiculously called a blood bath.
SAAB produces the SAAB Gripen fighter jet here.
The computer club at Linköping University, Lysator, put up the first web server in Sweden in February 1993, among the first 10–15 in the world.
The university's principal is named Mille Millnert.
The roundabout dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundabout_dog) originates from Linköping.
There is an IT and computer museum here. I also has an exhibition about gaming.
Linköping is one of few cities in Sweden that has a mayor.

yeah that's about it  â€‹

Pulling random stuff from Wikipedia/me personal knowledge.

Spokane hosted the first environmentally themed World's Fair in Expo '74, becoming the then-smallest city to ever host a World's Fair.
We host the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world every summer.
Pig-Out In The Park is an annual summer festival celebrating the joy of food. Local restaurants set up booths all around Riverfront Park.
Bing Crosby was born here.

Thats about it really.

I live in Budapest, the territory was ruled by celts, later romans. They built a lot of stuff, baths, amphitheaters and stuff and they called the whole camp Aquincum. After this our ancestors came to the place and it became the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary. On of our kings, Mathias Corvinus had Europe's greatest collection of historical chronicles and philosophic and scientific works in the 15th century.(-wiki)

After this the ottoman empire(turks) ruled half of the nation, the other half later became the part of the habsburg empire. After the turks left(after 150 years hah) and after some insurrection we formed the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. We kept this setup until world war I where we were allied with the germans. After the war the winner nations reduced the country's size based on ethnic groups mainly. In world war II british and american air attacks destroyed a large part of the city, the nazis demolished most of the bridges and in the top of that soviets captured the city. We became a part of the soviet union after this for 50 years.

THe city itself has some beautiful buildings but it mainly sucks. The most common export products of the city:

-gypsies
-dirt
-porn/whores

Celebs... Edward Teller was born here but he left because it sucks.

San Diego.

We have Comicon, loads of gays (more than even Los Angeles(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego look at citations 16 and 17), illegal immigrants, our houses fucking cost more than a half-million, apts are generally > 1,000/mo for 1 BEDROOM, and alot of historical shit (first european settlement on the west coast, etc) but no one cares.

Most importantly, though the drinking age here is 21, we live next to Tijuana -- where it's 18.

I live in a village just outside place called Kettering, which is a rather small town situated in the centre of England, where generally not that much happens. One of the only notable things I can think about Kettering is its history of boot and shoe production. After Britain's industrialisation Kettering and indeed much of the county of Northamptonshire pretty much became the shoe capital of the world. The First World War called for a huge rise in the production of boots worldwide, many of which were produced in my area. To give you an idea of the scale of this, when war was declared in August 1914, the War Office in London placed an order for 500,00 boots from Kettering factories and the French army 250,000. By the end of 1914 over 1 million boots had been produced in Kettering alone (the whole area was known as the shoe belt, so more production would have been going on in factories in other local towns). In 1916 the Russian army ordered 6 milion boots from Kettering. There was also a bit of a scandal involving all this manic shoe production. I guess with all the tremendous demand, quality control wasn't quite up to scratch and during the winter of 1914 the British army complained that many of the boots were falling apart. There's still a few remnants of the shoe industry left here these days, particularly the famous company Cheaneys who still produce here. So yeah, shoes.

During the Second World War, Harrington Airfield (which is about 2 minutes away from my house), was used primarily for launching secret missions into occupied France, most notably Operation Carpetbagger. During the Cold War, the U.S Army kept a whole bunch of Thor Ballistic missiles there. None where ever deployed, but I believe it the very fact that they were stored at Harrington has only come to light in the last 10 or 15 years.

Going back a bit, Francis Tresham who would become one of the conspirators involved in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, grew up around here and even built a few buildings (most notably Triangular Lodge, legend of which says Tresham had built an underground passage to London leading from it's basement). These days there are a bunch of local institutions named after him, such as Tresham College.

Also, the awesome band Bauhaus came from Northampton, and Spacemen 3/Spiritualized from Rugby, which isn't far away at all. The nearby town of Corby is often voted worst or second worst town in Britain.

Finally, in my village there's a guy who keeps llamas. That's cool, right?

Kingsville, Ontario.

Jack Miner's bird sactuary is here.
Hiram Walker, the famed distiller, used to vacation here.
The southern most town in mainland Canada.

In other words, nothing super spectacular or even remotely interesting about the town I live in. It's a tourist trap, plain and simple.

Oh, well about my area, I could mention a few worthless things about Michael Jordan. For a brief time, he did live in my town. Also, he has relatives around where I live, and his dad is buried in the town right next to mine. His cousin teaches at my old high school(that I just graduated from), and his aunt has been to my house. I guess that is about it, it sucks living in such a small area.

I'm probably missing some other stuff, but basically I live in a nerd city. We have a google division here, I pass 2 universities on my way to school, and another college not to far away. Biggest thing about us is probably RIM, which are the makers of blackberries. I'm not to sure what else to say. =)

But I guess the most interesting thing about my city is the fact that Mister Bartek lives nearby!  :woop: I'm actually not to sure if he actually lives in Waterloo or one of the cities attatched.

-john updike (novelist, short story writer, literary critic)
-keith haring (popular artist)(deceased)
-reading pagoda (place to dump bodies)

It has been known as "The Pretzel City" because of numerous local pretzel bakeries.

It is also known as "Baseballtown," after the Reading Phillies trademarked this moniker to market Reading's rich baseball history.

the Ugly Oyster, the oldest pub in the country. a lot of places claim this but in this case it's technically true, it was first built in yorkshire England and then moved here later. a lot of the food's really great if you're not some jerk that hates british and irish cuisine

PA dutch country which RULES despite what you might think! it makes it a lot easier to get really good quality food without having to go to shit like WHOLEFOODS or w/e, and there's some pretty unique stuff thrown in as well. a lot of places in the world have these great markets where you can buy some awesome stuff, but I think this is the only place in the USA that comes close. idk I might be wrong. also has the reading liederkranz, which is one of the biggest liederkranz iirc. it's great during oktoberfest, and you can buy some vvvvv good beer.

I also have an apartment in Philadelphia does that count? I'll do that too later if no one else does (heh basically I rule

Corbin is known pretty much just for having the first KFC (which is now both a KFC and a mini museum that has Asian tourists 24/7 (i am not stereotyping because I have never in my life NOT seen them there)) and I guess NIBROC which is a cleverly named (fuuuuuuck) festival that's pretty much just questionable food, questionable rides, and then sometimes good music.  I don't understand how we get good music though because we're a small fucking town and no one has ever heard of NIBROC (there was a play written about it called Last Train to Nibroc but I know nothing about it, kinda weird! if anyone ever has a chance to see this go do it for me).  We got Joan Jett and Jefferson Starship last year, it was the first time I liked the musical acts since being old enough to stay up for it.  I didn't actually get to see Joan Jett though because I got really sick and went home.

Also they are apparently building an outdoor theatre right now because some dude wrote a musical about KFC (involving dancing pieces of chicken even) and that is how they got the funding.  If/when this actually happens I promise to go see this musical and...I guess it would be best to write an article about it for GW!

Before my video camera got stolen, I planned on driving around my town (with a friend, mostly to film because I am DRIVING) and just filming shit for GW.  Like, go through the main parts of town and then also go through the most ridiculous backroads I can find.  I also wanted to have a church count on the bottom of the screen, because my friend and I were keeping count once and found about 20 within 15 minutes of driving.

Melbourne, Australia.. lots of stuff happened here, here is a few FUN FACTS.

Before Melbourne came to be known as the ‘City of Melbourn’e, it was called Batmania, Bearbrass, Bearport, Bareheap and Bearbury... lol Batmania.

According to the RSPCA, Melbourne is the "Fox Capital" of the western world, with 6-23 foxes every square kilometer in the metropolitan area.

Melbourne's scientists have been pivotal in the development of the world's most innovative biotechnology breakthroughs including Relenza, Relaxin and the bionic ear, which has provided hearing to 20,000 profoundly or totally deaf people in over 55 countries.

The Story of the Ned Kelly Gang, made in Melbourne in 1906, is recognised as the world's first feature film, running to five reels.

The Melbourne-made television soap opera Neighbours recorded its 4,000th episode in May 2002. It screens in 57 different countries to an average daily audience of 120 million viewers. Since it began in 1985 the show has had 18 marriages, 11 deaths and six births. <:: Man, I see the actors from that show all the time, have spoken to 3 of them too :|

Luna Park, in Melbourne's bayside suburb of St Kilda, is the oldest amusement park in the world under private management. (maybe that is why it sucks to much)

Melbourne’s famous beer, Foster’s Lager, was actually produced by two Americans.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

One of the fastest growing populaces in canada which still tells the world that the opportunity for work and diversity is still booming.

Has 1 of the top 5 deadliest roads in the world.

Petro-Canada is the tallest building outside of toronto, inside canada. (not including towers) Also when encana completes it's 59 floor building it will be taller than the Petro-Canada.

We have had 17 murders in calgary this year already, with a 5 person murder-suicide leaving an infant to survive the family of 5 and the downstairs neighbour being one of the victims.

We have the Calgary Stampede which has been proven as one of the largest and most complete outdoor entertainment show/festival on earth. And is now wanting to become the "greenest" outdoor show/festival on earth.

We have one of the largest concentrations of Oil and Gas companys working our of our city in all of North America. (I haven't check in a long time to see if we are in fact the largest... but I know were are one of the top 10.)

One of the fasting growing populations of homeless and of prositutes. (our homeless percentage has grown because much of the homeless come from both saskatchewan and bc think that we have the ability to help them.... fact is we can't even help ourselves.)

Other than that I don't know any more juicy tid bits that would be too interesting.

Manitoba, Winnipeg.

The province where factory hog farming is huge, the city that is pretty much the centre of wheat trade routes, and we've got the highest car theft rating in Canada. Ironically it's only being done by a select few, and they actually run the cops over now because they don't like going to a help centre because they are minors. Oh yeah a prince stopped by recently too.

i thought osu was in athens???  i don't know much about ohio geography at all that far south but yeah is athens like right by columbus or something?

also i'm sure there's something interesting about cleveland but nothing is really coming to mind.  we have the rock and roll hall of fame, and i think marilyn manson is from around here.  yeah, i got nothing.
heheh Ohio University is in Athens, Ohio State is in columbus. Athens is like 2 hours away down us route 33 to the southeast. culturally that area is nothing like the rest of ohio heh. no real point in going to that area except for the various state parks and crazy shit like the Logan Washboard Company factory and all the country festivals they have out that way

The special thing about the place I live is that my house was built at exactly the place where communities switch. To give you an example:
Our living room belongs to Kifisia
Our garden to Pefki
The other house belongs to Lykovrysi.

It may sound stupid but it actually makes things difficult since we have to go to different places when we want to pay the electricity bill or the water bill or taxes.

These places are in Athens-Greece btw

Well, I live in the small capitol city of Bismarck, North Dakota. For a long time, I never thought that there was anything special about this city or my whole state in general.

That is, until recently, when we have been acknowledged nationwide for several cool things despite a certain national geographic article (which has pissed off many North Dakotans) which calls our state a "deserted desert wasteland filled with nothing but ghost towns."

Apparently both my city and state has been seen by the business world as one of the few places with a growing economy. We have been getting countless new businesses in Bismarck and have been marked by several business magazines as THE place for people to start new businesses or open up new branches for franchises.

We were also named recently by real estate magazines as a great location for prime real estate.
I also know one of our roads (River Road) was named number 6 in High Times magazine as "Roads most cruised."

Oh yeah, we're also the number one state for underage drinking. Yeah, we really have nothing better to do.
Good thing we're finally getting all these businesses.

Regina, Saskatchewan (north of Bismark, ND)
Capital of Saskatchewan

We are still the reigning crime capital of Canada (woohoo).  Maclean's magazine named Regina Canada's most dangerous city, in its 2008 crime report edition.  I think we're also the STD capital of Canada.  North Central neighbourhood (Canada's worst neighbourhood) is a cesspool of crime, drugs, gangs and poverty.  I wouldn't walk through there in the daylight.

Despite that, Regina is the second fastest growing city in Canada (behind Saskatoon, SK), driven largely by a resource boom (mostly oil and natural gas and potash).  Housing prices have gone up like 75% in 2 years.

It is home of the Albert Street Bridge - claimed to the longest bridge over the shortest span of water, although this has never been officially verified (it's 850ft long over about a 10ft creek).

You may have heard about that incident a couple of years ago about the football team's kicker having manure dumped on his front lawn?  Yeah, that happened here.

The RCMP training barracks are in Regina.

Some famous people:
- Dick Assman, gas station attendant facetiously given fame on the David Letterman television show
- T.C. Douglas, CCF premier 1944–1961 and later leader of the federal New Democratic Party
- Leslie Nielsen was born here

Really? Great! It was Halifax a year or two ago.

Haha, thanks for stealing the title, man! Now I'll feel a bit safer walking around at night.

From Wikipedia:
Ottawa is a village in and the county seat of Putnam County, Ohio, United States.[3] The population was 4,367 at the 2000 census.

In 1792 Major Alexander Truman[5], his servant William Lynch and guide/interpreter William Smalley were sent by George Washington on a peace mission. Truman and Lynch were killed

Ottawa is the birthplace of Miss Frances, an early television performer famous for Miss Frances' Ding Dong School. A monument for her was erected in Ottawa in 2006 (I have no idea about this...)

Ottawa is the birthplace of professional baseball player and coach Larry Cox

High School Sports junk...  most of our teams have been good since 2004

I live in Newfoundland

-We get like 7 feet of snow each winter (where i live anyway)
-Weather changes every 15 minutes (give or take)
-foggy
-fish
-wonderful scenery though imo.
-moose
-no snakes or skunks

Me too, I live in St. John's, the Capitol of Newfoundland. We're the oldest city in North America, we have the oldest anual sporting event in North America (The Royal St. John's Regatta) and have the street with the most bars per square foot in North America. Essentially it's old as hell and we all drink a lot.

Seattle has the highest concentration of Asians in any American city.  It also has the highest percentage of people with college degrees in all of America making us the most "well educated" places in the country.  Consequently, Washington also has the highest percentage of atheists and one of the lowest percentage of black people, Jews, and Hispanics.

Everyone here is an arrogant asshat but I've grown to love the state.

Toronto, Ontario. It's in Canada, yes we have more than one city. We also have this giant penis in the middle of our city, and one giant nutsack where ironically people play with balls. (CN Tower and Roger's Centre)
Jim Carrey was raised here.

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada:

* Home to the (formerly) largest mall in the world (Dubai and Asia have now got us beat).
* Home to the legendary Edmonton Oilers (OK, they kind of suck now, but back in those Gretzky and Messier days...).
* Home of the Edmonton Eskimos (fuck the last 2 seasons, still one of the best teams in the CFL).
* Home of the University of Alberta, which is one of the top universities in Canada.
* Home of me (I am fucking awesome).
* We have tonnes of art and theatre here...
* Home of North America's largest Fringe Theatre Festival (second largest in the world).
* Home to the largest continuous green space in any North American city (bigger, ever, than Central Park in NYC).
* SCTV used to be filmed here (classic TV).
* Decent-but-not-great NBC horror TV show "Fear Itself" is shot here (well, Season 1 was, not sure if they will continue filming here for the next season).
* Our genius scientists at the U of A discovered a cure for diabetes (well...sort of, they developed a procedure that allows people to no longer need to take insulin shots, but it's still in the early stages, and I don't think it works in all cases).

I dunno...I love my city, but a lot of the coolness comes from things that you can only really start to appreciate after living here for a while.

I live in Clarksville, Tennessee and it's mostly important because a lot of famous musicians got there start here or stayed here at one point early on in their career.  It's still beyond me as to why.

I'm talking people like Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Paige, and the Monkees.  Also the guitarist from King Crimson lives in Nashville.

We also have Wilma Rudolph, who was a famous runner in the Olympics and the Fort Campbell military base which is home to the 101st Airborne Division.

Other than that it's a bunch of sinkholes and a shitty college.

Oh shit apparently we also have Otis Key!  He was/is a player and coach for the Harlem Globetrotters.
