Basically, write down all the years you've been alive, and then write down your favourite record from each of those years. This doesn't mean write down your favourite albums since you were 1, it just means write down what you think was the best album released that year. If you are truly struggling then put 2 down. But no more than 2 albums per year. And try and keep it 1.
I am 18, so here they are!
1990: Pixies - Bossanova
1991: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless | Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
1992: Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted | R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
1993: Yo La Tengo - Painful
1994: Jeff Buckley - Grace | Portishead - Dummy
1995: Radiohead - The Bends

2000: Radiohead - Kid A | Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
2001: The Strokes - Is This It | The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
2002: Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose | The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots;
2003: The Strokes - Room on Fire | Sufjan Stevens - Greetings from Michigan: The Great Lake State
2004: Air - Talkie Walkie | Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
2005: M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us | Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
2006: Asobi Seksu - Citrus | The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth;
2007: Radiohead - In Rainbows
2008: Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill - That's my favourite one so far...
That took me ages. Take some time over it, it's actually quite good fun to do. Wiki has lists of albums released each year, it'll probably help.
-
To be honest, I don't feel really comfortable in trying to limit some years to an album or two because it's just really difficult in some cases and I don't really have a favorite album for each year.

Lists I love reading lists! Keep em coming!
Sorry to ruin the party but you know no one is going to scroll through pages of people namedropping their favorite bands right?

man so I guess Now is actually this long-running series in the UK that's been around in the 1980's - I thought it was just by the same people who do those 50's, 60's, 70's compilations and they were like oh shit we ran out of stuff so they just started making Now
-
we got nows up to like 27 in america
-
we're actually at Now 74 or somethin in the UK. Ragnar is wrong.
-
yeah I had Now 35 in like 1995 and it had that fucking Mr Blobby song on it (lol)
-
Now 42 will always be the classic Now.
-

2008 - Dive Deep - Morcheeba (This is not a great album, but the only one I actually bought in 2008!)
That was fucking hard to narrow down.
-
OH MAN THAT TOOK HOURS AND I HAVE ACHIEVED NOTHING.
Guys, don't fall into this trap.
EDIT: Also this is kind of dumb because I ended up listing Dive Deep as COOL ALBUM whereas if you want to listen to a Morcheeba album you should probably listen to Big Calm and this list will MISLEAD YOU. I mean... Yeah. Also MOTHERS MILK over Blood Sugar just because I didn't have enough room to add blood sugar and 1989 was a pretty shitty music year for me.
-
yeah, it took like an hour to compile my list.
-
Hey Ryan, we like some similar music a little bit.
-
Yeah, right. Ok. I agree this is a bad idea. I liked doing it though, but the topic doesn't really go anywhere.
-
Third is definitely my favorite album of 2008 so far
even though it sounds like the best album of 1922 or like some kind of negative time
-
Yeah man, I thought to myself I'M GONNA DO THIS SHIT and I was expecting it to take forever but it really didn't! It slowed down a bit about halfway through, though. It sucks because sometimes I can barely think of anyone for one year (Boards of Canada is good shit but they're not even one of my favorites and 1998 was just a SPARSE YEAR since I did not feel like naming more Elliott Smith) and at the same time think of like four things for a single year and have to pick a couple of them (note the lack of Clinic's 2002 album, which I like a lot!). Looking at the list, it seems like my taste in music has HIT A WALL and I am kind of gay or something, but I think it's just that I listen to a lot more shit now but still maintain a pretty consistent list of favorites. A lot of the stuff I like now just isn't quite as good as what I've thought of as BEST ALBUMS for a while now!
1985: The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
1986: Bad Brains - I Against I
1987: Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
1988: Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
1989: Pixies - Doolittle
1990: Sonic Youth - Goo
1991: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
1992: Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II
1993: Morphine - Cure for Pain
1994: Built to Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love/Tom Petty - Wildflowers
1995: Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith
1996: Tori Amos - Boys for Pele
1997: Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus/Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
1998: Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children
1999: Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
2000: Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica/Elliott Smith - Figure 8
2001: Aesop Rock - Labor Days
2002: Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights/Rjd2 - Deadringer
2003: The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium/Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell
2004: John Frusciante - Shadows Collide with People/Arcade Fire - Funeral
2005: Blockhead - Downtown Science/Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
2006: Built to Spill - You In Reverse/Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
2007: Dinosaur Jr - Beyond/Iron & Wine - Shepherd's Dog
2008: Portishead - Third
Yeah, the list is okay, I guess. I feel kind of bad about certain things missing, like how I think We Were Dead was a pretty good album but didn't put it on there, and some of the shit feels like I am SETTLING but oh well! I don't think this is such a bad topic, by the way. It's kind of interesting to think about WHERE I WAS when some of my favorite albums came out. Like it is pretty crazy to think that people were listening to You're Living All Over Me while I was probably breast feeding somewhere!
-
I like how you listed The Pharcyde, RESPECT
-
