Title: Broadband
Post by: hobomasterxxx on July 09, 2008, 02:48:09 am
Im getting my broadband connected in a week. But when we were getting the contract set up and all, they asked us to backup important files. Now i wonder.... Why? How can a new internet deal cause loss of files?

It was probably just a precaution.  I don't see how getting broadband would ever have any effect on your hard drive's files.

Maybe if you started off without internet at all and then got broadband--instead of upgrading from something else to broadband--it's very likely you either have no antivirus or out of date antivirus (after all, if you had never been online or connected to other computers, you'd have little need for it).  Even if this doesn't apply to you, the fact that it applies to some people would mean they would need to tell you this precaution just for being a customer.  A virus is the only thing I could think of that the internet would do to harm your files.

That's just a guess, but it makes sense to me.

one time I saw a cable commercial (cable internet) and of the guys said "I can download videos off my camera faster!" which is utter bullshit and has nothing do with your internet. Another commercial for the same company has a women saying "I don't need antivirus, I have Cox" which again makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. In short, ISPs are for some reason completely retarded and will say anything that sounds plausible to 40 year old women.

That really works well with my idea though:  if you're getting internet for the first time and you have NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE DOING (and think you don't need an antivirus), you're likely to have everything ruined when you start thinking people are saving you money on replica watches.

If the ISP says to backup your files, it probably helps them to not be legally responsible for you being a dipshit (not that they should be in the first place).

To quote one of the something like 20 email they sent me-

"Before you install your service, we recommend that you back up all data on your computer and make sure that you have all of your computer's Operating System disks and Administrator passwords."

My computer didn't come with OS disks... could this be a problem?

No, it would just be for a worst case scenario. A recommendation is all it is.
