Director - John Moore(Flight of the Phoenix, Behind Enemy Lines)
Release Date - October 17th 2008
Well the trailer is up(Obviously from that^)and although John Moore hasn't had the best track record, has managed to peak my interest with this. The games I don't think Ive played but my brother says their pretty good. Figured I would put some info in this topic for the sake of it..
The plot will be based on the plot of the first Max Payne game, but with certain differences and some new characters.
Three years prior to the movie's beginning, tragedy struck NYPD detective Max Payne (Wahlberg) when his wife and daughter were murdered; the killers were never found.
In the present, a series of murders arises that bear resemblance to the method in which Payne's wife was killed. Investigating the matter further and realizing that the two cases are connected, Payne comes into conflict with the police department, a sister of one of the victims (Kunis), the local mafia, and a prospering drug manufacturing corporation.
What do you guys think?
-
what mark wahlberg
-
They are probably going to take another perfectly good game franchise to brown town a-la hitman.
-
I think Whalburg will make a great Max Payne, Just look at the other characters he's played. This has potential but they could still fuck it up.
I loved how dark and gritty the game was, if they can pull that off then it should be pretty good.
Also, I didn't know there were flying demons or whatever in the game...
-
I really liked the trailer. Reminds me of Sin City.. In the best way(Sin City was good as!). Rumors are going around it might actually be only PG13 which is odd seeing the amount of blood in the trailer.
Mark Wahlberg is a good actor at times. Like in The Departed, Four Brothers so I think he will do a good job of as Max Payne.
-
yeah i don't doubt his acting ability, he's a pretty decent actor especially in roles like this. i just didn't expect someone like him (he's pretty big now) to be in a video game movie
-

And I never expected Martin Scoursese to direct a remake, but he never knew when he signed that contract.............
-
i laughed out loud when i saw this in the list of releases this year.
i didnt get into the game, but the big thing about Max Payne is BULLET TIME OMG, and since we have bullet time in a dozen movies already I'm not sure what is going to make this movie different.
-
mark wahlberg needed to be max payne because his face is naturally that way
Edit:
Edit: I always felt like Behind Enemy Lines was this cheesy imitation Metal Gear movie so this could be ok
-
What the fuck is with those retarded flying things, that makes the whole thing look a bit gay.
Apart from that it looks pretty good and the cast looks solid too. If they make this gritty then it should be good.
EDIT: Also isn't Jim Bravura meant to be white.
-
Didn't max start losing his shit in the game though, maybe those things are just hallucinations or something. That would be cool...
-
the plot of max payne 1 had some things to do with hallucinogens
it wouldn't be too surprising if these were only hallucinations and that guy is really just falling down his window
-
i didnt get into the game, but the big thing about Max Payne is BULLET TIME OMG
Bullet time was the gimmick that made the game widely known. Anyone who's played any of the games know the mood in them is the real killer. I've played through both games quite a few times and enjoy it every time, purely for the story-telling and the noir mood.
As for this trailer, it looks like absolute shit.
and what the fuck's up with the flying demons or whatever? This is Max Payne, not Resident Evil.
-
guys I'm 99% sure the demons will only be onscreen for like 2 minutes of the movie some ad exec was probably like EVERYBODY LOVES DEMONS or some crap
but then again it might get really weird and the movie will just hammer the most random and unsubtle imagery into our skulls after the first 15 minutes like that movie Hostage
Edit: I just realized why I like some parts of this movie - I remember Max Payne 1 had those cutscenes that were either like a very realistic comic book or comic-fied photos of people and I thought they looked pretty badass - so I think the movie resembles those to some extent
-
20th Century Fox. Amen.
-
I'm betting the angels are metaphorical! Though it wasn't in the actual game I can see something like that being written in (Payne believes he is on a MISSION FOR GOOD etc., hallucinations or maybe just metaphors).
-
i hear that only 45 min of film was actually recorded
they just spread it out with bullet time
-
I'm betting the angels are metaphorical! Though it wasn't in the actual game I can see something like that being written in (Payne believes he is on a MISSION FOR GOOD etc., hallucinations or maybe just metaphors).
Max himself was really fucked up and at points in the game I think he got injected with some drugs and stuff (like that Valkyr stuff?) so yeah he was a raging lunatic with hallucinations.
No doubt the angels are the hallucinations.
-
This looks bad. Really bad.
-
And I never expected Martin Scoursese to direct a remake, but he never knew when he signed that contract.............
You mean like when he signed the current remake contact? Come on.
-
Apparently this might even be PG-13!? When you base a movie of something that is known to be pretty violent you don't censor it.
-
this is kind of OT but i dont want to make a topic over at videogames forum just for this so im just gonna shoot:
Does anyone know anything about there possibly being a Max Payne 3?
-
lars: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_payne#Max_Payne_3
there wasn't much blood in the first max payne game, or strong language or nudity so this isn't even an issue. if it's pg 13 they'll show a bunch of soldiers getting shot in the chest rather than showing chunks of their brains spewing out against the wall
it could still be pretty cool, especially as max payne had crappy dialogue and excellent action which is what vidcon movies are all about!
-
Looks like it'll be the best videogame to film adaption yet.
it's pretty obvious the angels are from his drugz and just hallucinatory.
i'll probably see this, only con so far is mark wahlberg.
edit:
do...you....remember when you were...a kid....and you went past the graveyard??
-
and what the fuck's up with the flying demons or whatever? This is Max Payne, not Resident Evil.
you just said you played through max payne and now you're saying the demons are stupid??? wtf?
for those who haven't played the game, it revolves around a drug called valkyr (valkyries being the angels that took men to valhala there's lots of norse stuff in the story) and max is injected with the drug and trips balls. the segments are these weird postmodern meta-segments where payne questions his reality and claims he exists in a video game then relives his families brutal murders. if anything the movie will probably blend the tripping balls with real life (it's probably when he's chasing that goofy guy during the level "fear gives men wings to fly").
-
"i dont know about angels, But its fear that gives men wings"
I absolutely LOVE the max payne games. And have always said that if a movie is made they should make it without any bullet-time at all. The bullet time was a game mechanic, Not part of the story, the movie should tell the story, which is something that im noticing many videogame movies fail at doing. Just look at doom (source wasn't fantastic but what the fuck?)
The first time i watched the trailer, i was "WHAT THE FUCK?" i was ready to burn things. Then i sat back, watched it again and went "Hey those angels and demons look symbolic.... If thats the case. Kick ass" I think Marky Mark will do a good job as payne, I like the actor, and his narration in the trailer was pretty cool, i hope it does it through the whole movie.
but who could forget "The flesh of fallen angels"
This being said, And also because i have NO faith in Movies these days, i reserve judgement until i have seen the film. I saw bullet time in the trailer though, so it wont be the perfect movie i invisioned for it. Hitman was a let down like that aswell.
-

I disagree:
Max Payne always looked like Adam Baldwin since the first day I played the fucking game:
I think adam could play intense, but I think Mark is better at acting intense.
-
Poster:
Inspired by the box art for the first game, the poster looks pretty cool.
-
Man this looks so good. As long as MP (yeah i call him by his initials. deal!) ends up killing at least 100 people and they keep the emotional cutscenes to a minimum, then it'll be a good action movie.
-
As long as Mark plays Max Payne with a continuous constipated face, and they slow the camera for jumping gun fights---it will be perfect.
-
Something about fighting demons and poop. Yeah, same Max Payne. But should be in dream sequence.
Edited: for swearing edit. :ganja: For something I better stay on facepunch to avoid the soap here.
-
Hopefully it won't be bad. I mean, the game itself was funny a lot where Max had the one-liners so if they have Mark say those a lot idk, it'd be like the game haha.
Man idk what I'm saying right now I just woke up and my head hurts.
-
I'll leave this open because I guess it's relevant now but please don't bump month old topics without asking me first thanks.

new trailer it's fucking badass i can't wait
the movie still might suck tho
-
this is a really good choice for a game-to-movie cross as the story was pretty lame in the first game. i've not played the second.
-
Holy shit that new trailer kicked ass. SO watching this fucken movie now.. Although that chick kinda pissed me off for some reason. Is she that chick from That 70's Show?
-
That was pretty cool. Notice after he shot the lock on that door he keeps shooting while diving forward in typical max payne style
-
I'm really looking forward to seeing this, even considering the possibility that it might be bad. I liked the trailer, and Marky Mark isn't well, a terrible choice. But I love the Max Payne games and even started playing them both again just for the hell of it. This is something I'll definitely see.
You know it would be really cool if they snuck the song 'Late Goodbye' in as a wink to Max Payne players but I'm not sure how that would work.
-
aw, jamie hector is in this crap. it's annoying to see all the wire actors pop up in bullshit now that it's done.
-
Mona is obviously Angelina Jolie, but they obviously didnt have the money to pay her
-

possibly an intro scene or the credits? haha.
i just hope this movie isn't as horrible as i think it'll end up...KEEP THE MAX PAYNE SPIRIT ALIVE!!
:EDIT:
wtf mona sax is the girl who did the voice of Meg in Family Guy...i didn't look at what else she's done.....
-
Her name is Mila Kunis and she was on That 70s Show.
She played Jackie.
-
man, mila kunis is so fucking hot. like, seriously! i wish more russian/eastern european women lived around here. the accents alone are ridiculously hot, but the fact that they are often ACTUALLY hot is a bonus too.
also, idk about this, you know. from the trailer it looks like an action movie with OKAY acting (read: not clearly terrible), but you can't really tell much from trailers like those, you know? i wish that instead of trying to pump legitimacy into dumb series, they'd just make actual movies. this would probably be a lot better if it did not have to adhere to the plot of a stupid videogame (note that the trailer showed nothing of this-- although i do think i saw an ANGEL WITH BLACK WINGS which i'm just gonna go ahead and count as a strike against it!). also i'd take it a lot more seriously if it was not called max payne. that is sort of SYMBOLIC i think of how things are. you take something and you try to make it as good as you can, but in the end you are just compensating for the fact that you're bound to fundamentally subpar source material. so instead of a mark wahlberg cop movie, you get a mark wahlberg cop movie with a plot written by nerdy game designers, and actors who spend the entirety of the movie trying to make up for that single fact. they're trying to make a legit movie, but it will still be max fucking payne, so there's only so much they can really do before just being like, yeah you know what, let's make an real movie and not some shitty license.
-
it's like a final fantasy rm game except in movie form and with less women wearing unrealistic clothes!!
also i didn't know mila kunis did meg. family guy sucks but still, thats kinda neat, i've been wondering what she's been doing now.
-
Mila Kunis was also (pretty great) in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I didn't really see her as Mona Sax in that though. But I suppose she could pull it off if she's good enough.
-
Omg Mila Kunis & Nelly Furtado <3
I will definitely be seeing this.
-
man, mila kunis is so fucking hot. like, seriously! i wish more russian/eastern european women lived around here. the accents alone are ridiculously hot, but the fact that they are often ACTUALLY hot is a bonus too.
i have actually noticed this too. there's a lot of eastern europeans, or at least a noticable amount, around where i live now and the women are so good looking far far too good looking for this town. it's weird, i dunno what it is about these women i just like the way they look, and i don't usually have preferences or whatever. their boyfriends and husbands tend to be bald and fat which is weird but probably a bullshit cultural thing that men don't need to be pretty that just sticks out a little more over here where most men with good looking girlfriends/wives have the good sense to be ashamed of themselves.
-
Looks hot, I just hope all the demon-and-fires-in-the-sky shit in the trailer don't scare people away, since they don't really explain in the trailer that they're just drug-induced visions. If I didn't know beforehand i'd be thinking this movie looks kind of like a vampire movie with Matrix gunfights and just generally be like 'what the hell'.
Or maybe people will just be like WHOA GUNS DEMONS N SHIT (AND SOME BABE)
-
So I've never played the game, and what is up with his face, is he tripping so hard, he's got to squint to see great distances??
I am a fan of Wahlberg, though, so that alone might get me to see this movie.

the black angel shit isn't in the game but i guess it has ties.
but really they should've just went fuck-all and tried to make it crazy tongue-in-cheek/noir/whatever-the-fuck styles the game mixed and just been like it...instead of taking all that and trying to make it serious.
-
Alright, saw this last night.
Basically I thought it was an incredible looking film - great cinematography, great imagery and all that, but as a movie it was very very poor.
The action was great but honestly there wasn't nearly enough of it, the dialogue was choppy and cliched, the story was jarring and awkwardly written and so on.
As a fan of the games I was pretty disappointed but it's definitely better than say, Hitman. It's a good 'video game movie', it's just not a good movie.
Sad that it turned out this way but at least it was attractive and fairly entertaining.
-
It has no good reviews so far.

i just saw this tonight IT IS HORRIBLE
this is not even a good film on video game terms - it leaves out sections of the story (like about 15 different characters and more), adds in extra stuff, and completely changes the plot.
like the general base idea of the story was ok...but they churned it out of a machine and changed it. literally there's scenes where max (and other people) are going crazy and then they scream like the incredible hulk and the sky bursts into flames (including ceilings falling UPWARDS) and the angels come out everywhere....like what the hell.
the story was even harder to follow than the game itself. the game makes sense at the end, this doesn't. it leaves out many characters and there's a few that are supposed to die (including missing characters) who don't die in the film...like what?
agh how did they even make the movie bad in video game terms. it wasn't even at least faithful to the game!
also ptizzle i disagree, as i've already said this: it's a bad video game movie. totally different from the game.
-
I more meant that compared to the general quality of video game movies it's fine but that is really saying nothing.
As a film based on the Max Payne games it was awful.
-
YEah it wasn't that great at all but I liked the part where he takes the serum and turns into a tripping badass that was p cool I'm not spoilering that so FUCK YOu
-

well i guess video game movies of uwe boll!
because iirc there's no really good quality video game movie.
-
yeah this was pretty terrible. it looked nice, but not really much more than that.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that if they actually followed the story it would have been good or at least decent. in fact I think that has been the issue with EVERY SINGLE FUCKING VIDEO GAME MOVIE. They change the god damn story so they can give some new writer his dream of writing utter crap.
-
do...do you guys think max payne had a good story? or more to the point, one fit for a movie?
max payne was a parody of the neo-noir sam spade "a tall glass of water poured herself into my seat" raymond chandler shit. movies have already parodied this a thousand times. the choice was to either up the ante and take once farcical elements and apply them at face value (what this movie apparently did) or to create a whole new story devoid of much of the original game's charm but with a potentially better plot.
-
Going to see this wednesday night. I haven't played the games so I'm not sure if I'll like it or not but from what Ive read like reviews and what not people say it's actually pretty bad? Is it because it strayed to far away from the game or just in general a bad movie?
-

I think if they had followed that formula and updated it with the 'stylish' shit Max Payne does for the modern crowd it would have been a good movie.
-
ahahahaha i have a feeling i'm going to love this movie, MAX PAYNE WAS GARBAGE you just didn't notice during the game because you were like "oh come on come on i wanna roll in slow mo again" and skipped all the horrible horrible dialogue.
i've not played max payne 2 but max payne 1 had fairly ugly characters too, i feel really mean for saying it because i'm pretty sure they were just members of the development team.
anything based on a video game plot is going to be fairly illogical because most of the plot is to get the character from one setting into another! start out in the seedy underbelly, get into the military complex, get into the office environment etc
-
and skipped all the horrible horrible dialogue.
did you not just realize what's been said already? it's a parody, it's bad dialogue/whatever is intentional;
at the same time, the base story behind it (child/wife murder -> crazy cop -> whatever) fits for an action thriller that would've been...quirky. i mean like steel said i get that it'd be another parody in a sense, but as far as ACTION GUNS THRILLER goes the max payne story would work etc.
-
The cost and time it took for my friends and I to get back home was not worth this movie. I still can't believe I wassted $10 for this movie. I saw a lot of potential in this movie too :(.
I sat there and waited for an hour before any "real" action started and all I got was Max Payne getting beat up before he actually got to kill anyone. Everyone already mentioned the cheap "slow down" effect which only happens like once by the way..I think they just tried to make this movie into a mystery drama movie rather than an action movie which this should've been.
-
i thought it was better than the dark knight
-
I didn't think this movie was that bad. It had flaws, but I wouldn't call it "horrible." It's mostly pretty average.
Then again, I never played the Max Payne games, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
