Well recently I have begun to develop a social conscience and I was trying to think of something cool I could do for charity, maybe something a little more personal than giving 1 dollar to some anonymous organisation, like I always thought it would be cool to write a letter to someone who is in prison (there is a organisation that does this for people who have been arrested because of their race I think) or maybe even just give a random street person some clothes.
Any ideas? Have you done anything similar?
-
Sweater drives are pretty easy to organize, but next to writing letters to prison I guess that sounds pretty lame.
-
Sweater drivers?
Come on guys! Has no one else done ANYTHING FOR CHARITY YOU IGNORANT BASTARDS!
-
Canned goods?
-
Yeah I might do that man, although I am trying to think of something more personal... I dunno I've just started thinking of this stuff lately not too sure why.
-
I thought of doing something like going trick or treating on Halloween and then since I don't eat candy at all I would donate it to a homeless shelter or something. It would be cool but I think I'd much rather donate some other food that is actually good (lol) but I still might do it.

How about instead of some self-aggrandizing act of charity (oo I feel good about myself for helping the less fortunate) you focus on being a more compassionate and morally concerned person. That way you'll be nicer to people and you don't really have to do anything.

hahahahaha you dont even know me but thanks for the brilliant insight

I dunno how things are in new zealand, but there's probably a food bank or homeless shelter somewhere. that's volunteer work rather than donating $ but it's all I've got! other than donating canned food in highschool and giving away my old clothes that are still in good shape, that's all I've ever done.

I wonder how many Convert to X Faith letters these people get!
oh blitzen, you're so eccentric! eccentric blitzen, thats what we call you

I love how people assume anyone who wants to do something for charity is just a selfish bastard out to make themselves feel good.
-
I didn't make that assumption, and I have no doubt that your concerns are socially motivated or that you have some altruistic empathy that you want to embody. I just think idk that being nice all the time is better than being good every so often. y'know we should all try and develop some of that unintentional and unconditional compassion that jesus was talking about
EDIT: rather than just going "here is some money or hello" you could like, idk become a role model for the children in your community by being really involved in the local soccer club and then help teens face tough issues so that by the end of season two there is some serious trouble with the law but Hernando gets bailed and to the game in time to score the winning point of the match

I have been to like Synagogue twice in my life, in fact I went to church more often. I wasn't aware that you go to church??!!!!
(do you think i killed jesus because i am a jew, i swear i didnt)
-
One time I was supposed to get tickets to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra for Christmas but I forfeited them and used the money to buy $100 in toys for poor kids in my community. My dad and his girlfriend were so touched by the sentiment that they bought me a ticket anyway, so everyone was happy that year!
Writing letters to people in prison is not something I would probably ever do. I mean, what is there to talk about? HAI GUY HOW'S IT LIKE BEING A THREAT TO SOCIETY???
I would say volunteer at a mission somewhere and feed soup to the homeless people. If you're good with kids then feed homeless children or something, I dunno. Teach them how to play chess or carve wood or something.
-
Yeah the more I think about it the less I want to do it.
-
I mean if you can get some intimate details about the rape then.............
-
Back in school junior high and high school we were forced to donate canned food and clothes. Appart from that... well:
Go to an adult daycare center and talk to old people. I used to do that... and it's cool sometimes.
Most churches have some sort of donation stuff. I've donated stuff there, like clothes, food and such. Here we have many facilities for "young mothers", and I've donated infants milk and clothes several times. Maybe you could donate such if you have a little brother, or stuff when you used to be a baby?
Maybe you sould consider donating blood. But be prepared fo the post dizzyness.
-
-Donate blood
-Write a letter to someone fighting overseas (not really charitable, but how is writing to someone in prison) There is some organizations, i cant remember one right now, where you can do this, along with sending a 'basket' of things for a soldier, like simple things that are luxury for them - even as simple as some candy and or christmas card (at the time). We did this at my church once.
i cant think of any more now but if i do later ill say
-
-Donate blood
This.
If you donate blood on regular intervals, you're almost guaranteed to save at least one persons life. It takes like twenty minutes and you'll only feel weak for a couple of hours at the most (and when you get used to it, even less).
-
Yeah, I really wanna donate blood.
I've done a fair bit of work for kids charities and stuff and it was all pretty good. Not something I'd wanna do a lot but it makes you feel good to help people.
The best time I had was probably working with Meals on Wheels because I dunno, I feel bad for elderly people who don't have anyone to talk to much of the time and it's nice to bring them something that makes them happy. I think if I ever got into it more it'd be more aged care stuff.
-
I would donate blood but I can't stand needles. I always donate old clothes to homeless shelters. Also one time my band put up a concert to raise money for sex trafficking victims in Africa. I don't have any ideas. Instead of volunteering your money, why not your time? You can help out in some at a shelter of sorts.
-
I used to work at a soup kitchen for the homeless. You can also do a lot of things for the Salvation Army, like collect money around the holidays, wrap presents around christmas off the top of my head. I think local stuff is more important than "rice in africa" or whatever, because rich people just throw down the $$$ for that. Me and a couple friends worked on a few houses for single mothers(I think it was a long time ago when i had gunz)and it was pretty fun, dude. It's a great line to use too.
My girlfriend does the Salvation Army stuff. She really likes it, and you can do a different assortment of things. I know a lot of people who also run for various things too. Theres just, an endless amount of activities you can get involved in.
-
i was going to suggest blood but it sounds like you want a more hands on thing (which giving blood kind of isn't but it is a very good thing and everyone capable should do this). anyway volunteering is your best bet as suggested, if you look in the local paper you can probably find a ton of stuff to do.
-
i really like doing volunteer work and charity stuff. probably the best experience was when i went with some friends from church to a "women's help center" for women and their kids who are homeless, druggies, abused, etc... mostly people from detroit, since it was right outside of the city. there were some pretty sad sights there, including one person who started crying loudly and then went into a seizure (caused by a combination of being a crackhead and from strong emotions) during prayer, probably because the speaker who was there really got to her. anyways, we baked and served some desserts there. cakes, cookies, snacks... you know, that kind of stuff. this was back in february (if i recall correctly), and a worker there had said that they hadn't gotten sweets since september (they rarely get sweets because they spend all their money on things like regular food and clothes to provide for the families). it was a really cool experience overall though and i was really glad to bring some happiness to some pretty sad people and show them god's love.
also, for almost 6 years, i have been on a puppet team (The Heartfelt Puppet Team) that goes to nursing homes and some churches to do puppet shows. it's run by my friend's parents, who are both professional puppeteers. the old people at nursing homes seem to really like the shows, even if it may only be 5 or 6 that stayed awake through the whole thing. xD but i'm happy to do puppet shows.
if you want to do some volunteer work, here's my tip: even if your not religious, look around at churches. there are a LOT of volunteer opportunities mentioned at and/or sponsored by churches. every volunteer/charity thing i've done i found out about from church, including:
-helping build a spanish church
-helping to build a house for a hurricane katrina victim family
-volunteering at homeless shelters
-setting up for "sleep-ins", where we set up some nice rooms for homeless people to spend a week or so inside the church
-writing letters and sending presents to soldiers in Iraq at Christmas
-trick-or-treating for UNICEF, to raise money for poor kids all over the world
and there's lots more things that i haven't done too. you can donate blood and food and whatever, but if you're looking to have experiences and help people directly through volunteer work, look around at churches, local websites, etc... and you will be sure to find lots of opportunities.
and if you live in a big city, there's opportunities all around. take a homeless person out to eat, or give them clothes or something (you could just give them money too but it will help them more if you teach them how to be responsible with the money they get because there's a chance they would just spend it on booze or drugs. giving plain money could be harming them in the grand scheme of things, not helping).
EDIT:
and let me just mention, old people at nursing homes can have some awesome stories. and even if they don't, it'll make stories for you.
for example, i did a puppet show about "favorite christmas memories" this past christmas, and after the show we went around and talked to some residents there and asked them what their favorite christmas memories are. my friend and i were talking to this one old guy in a wheelchair. we asked "do you have a favorite christmas memory?" and he started suddenly crying. he started trying to say something like "got shot... shot me here" and stuff and then he lifted up his shirt so we could see his stomach and he had a bullet hole there. we were like "" and we were like "well it's okay now, that must've been a long time ago, and now you have people to care for you so things like that won't happen again." it was really awkward and sad and funny at the same time. it was funny cuz... well, some old guy just started talking about how he got shot and lifted up his shirt to me what??? yeah but i have a lot of interesting/funny/sad stories from nursing homes. (another time, DURING a puppet show, some old lady started freaking out and she was like "GOD DAMNIT PENIS FUCK I'M SHITTING MY PANTS".)
-
HEY I CAN THROW THIS IN:
If you want to help sick people but don't want to wipe up old people or put needles in, outpatient cancer centers often need volunteers just to register people in and talk to and give them snacks. there was some high school girl going into ninth grade doing it at mine.
-
donate blood man. i'm really depressed because they fucking won't let me donate blood because i lived in Poland for over 3 years and I MAY HAVE MAD COW DISEASE
-
Yeah, to go along with mkk, churches generally have loads of stuff to do, so if you're not taken aback by their random attempts to 'convert' you, you should be alright. Use the excuse that you go to another church (just make sure you know the name of a real church because they will ask you which one).
I also think it would be pretty badass to get into something like the peace corps if you have the time. Just for the sake of seeing the world. I wonder if you have to pay in order to travel?
-
I went out with some friends, bought a bunch of subway sandwiches and handed them out to homeless people. It was a really neat experience.
-
I know that it would seem lame, but a clothes drive from your neighbourhood for the homeless would be a nice gesture to any human being. Sweaters do some good, but the ability to find decent clothes to keep you warm and stuff are really helpful.
-
My church is always trying to organize stuff like that. Churches are a great place to start.
For secular organizations, I'm sure there's some sort of town or city hall area where they're always looking for volunteers. Just be creative, and get out and look for someone that's already got something going. Chances are, they exist.
-
If you have long hair, you can donate it an organization that makes wigs for poor children with cancer.

I know you didn't want to donate money but I think that Kiva is probably the single best way to make the world a better place through charitable donation.
