Okay so I'm wanting to try something new now, the buzz I get from DDR/ITG isn't as great as it once was and so it's time for a new exercise...
I want to learn Parkour, and I want to learn it as quickly as possible.
Obviously it's a mindset that you have to take on board first off and it takes a lot of practice but I want as many crash courses (preferably with as little crashes as possible), on how to get good at doing even the most basic of Parkour techniques...
To give this topic a point, I want to know:
who here does/did Parkour?
How did you learn?
Do you have any referencing materials for me to learn the basics?
What injuries have you sustained over time?
What should I NOT do when learning?
A little about myself...
Okay, I'm about 6ft tall, athletic, upper body strength could be better but I can do pull/chin-ups fairly easily.
I can run long distances at jogging pace and run a fair way at a fast pace.
As I said I play DDR, I have good coordination and reaction times, oh and here's a video of me sandboarding backwards down a sand dune last week...
Description: Take a cardboard cut-out advert for Wii Fit and toboggan down a sand dune... BACKWARDS...
Excuse the quality...
So yeah basically I want to learn Parkour, answer the questions above or advise me any way you can I guess...
At least so that I live long enough to turn 19... :)

parkour looks awesome and if I lived in an actaul city with good terrain I would definitely want to get into it during the summer. I think Sredni is, or was really into parkour so hopefully he'll see this thread!

I started doing it about a month and a half ago and it's a lot of fun. There's a parkour group that meets at a university near me every week, and I've found that really helpful. I might suggest looking around seeing if there are any sort of groups in the area you live and join up with them.
And you make it sound like parkour is something you either can or can't do, when it's more of a mindset and an activity that you progressively learn.
If you can't find a group, I suggest just learning as much as you can, researching it, finding videos. Find something you think you could do and try it. Try doing different vaults over rails. Practice precision vertical jumps (you still move forward, you just aren't tossing your weight forward like a normal long jump). Try standing on a sidewalk and see if you can land your toes right on the cracks without losing your balance or tossing your weight into it.

yeah who wouldnt want to do that kinda shit

whats the point of the video
http://www.americanparkour.com/
this site has a lot of good articles, I suggest you start with some of the fitness regiments they have there. From there I think the first thing you generally learn is how to do a safe landing (roll), then how to vault over objects.
also ddr doesn't make you good at anything except ddr. If you want good cardiovascular training then buy a pair of shoes and run 5 miles a day. (you also need a good pair of cross trainers for parkour).

I find the whole idea of parkour kind of funny and nostalgic at the same time. When i was younger i was pretty much doing parkour, though we didn't call it parkour we simply called it climbing. I mean we once jumped over people's back yard fences all the way to the otherside of the block for the fun of it :D, even had to do a bit of sneaky sneaky :P.
All i can say is learn how to grab things and land properly, that way you can get around and navigate most obsticles and land without problems.

I would bust my fucking head open all over the sidewalk

Wait, so is Parkour sledding down sand dunes with Wii fits, or it running on rails and jumping building to building stuff in cities and stuff?
-
I think Konix or Shredni do Parklour, I remember there being a topic on it last year.
-
I don't parkour, but I used to run up and down this pretty steep bike course. It's so kickass to run horizontally after a downhill sprint (the course would slope down and when you hit the bottom there was a sandbank for the bikes to make the turn. You basically do what the bikes do). Anyways, I suggest you perfect your forward roll. If you're about to slip, it's safer to roll across and displace your weight along your back than to smash your head open all over the floor.
I bet breakdancing would help, too. Not exactly for any moves, but you might be able to hone in on your balance, and they have a few flips you can do just show off. This might sound gay, but you could also try to take up a gymnastics class. If you do that, not only would you be able to practice your balance, but you could also 'borrow' the gym you're in for a little parkour exercise. I bet the balance beam and most of that other shit they have would provide excellent courses for you to make. Not to mention that they have a MAT.
Also, get your friends in on something like this. If you can't find any groups like grog said, you might be able to make one at your local community center. No doubt, they'll have a gym, too.
Good luck, have fun, don't die, kick ass.

sredni definitely does it but konix is a SMOKER i think so i would be pretty surprised if he was athletic enough to pull that shit off!

DID YOU KNOW.......
that smoking does not automatically prohibit you from being athletic?
-
yeah plenty of horrible people are athletes
also sredni had his parkour krew in the news and stuff iirc so we should probably wait for him (advice from a famous parkourer)

YES BUT..........
people who do parkour are athletic to a ridiculous degree and i think they sort of do that stuff for extended periods of time so i would still be pretty surprised if many of them were people who'd been smoking for years. there's a difference between being athletic and being in like PEAK HUMAN PHYSICAL CONDITION which is what a lot of parkour people seem to be.

Jesus man have you SEEN some people playing DDR :fogetgasp:

Hey.
I'm sorry for everything.
-
yeah Sredni is sick. someone post those videos of him and his pals on the news
-
i thought he was in india?
-
Learn gymnastics first, if you're capable of learning that, then Parkour will be no challenge. As with any sport, you will need to start eating properly and just exercise regularly in order to perfom any parkour move.
-
yeah, Sredni's in India for a month btw, he won't be replying I think! he used to be way into it, he's toned it down some, but he went to some conference in DC and shit.
basically 90% of parkour is mental, because your body can land almost all the jumps and shit. you just don't think you can and if you balk, you won't!

Sadly Here theres little to parkour. but I still love the sport. Me and my friends practice pole holds and wall spins and wall climbing on an old abandoned apartment complex by our house and twice we went downtown where theres lots of old buildings on like 60* angle hills so its steep as all hell my friend miss jumped a ledge to building top and fell a story onto a small door raincover roof and broke his tibia so he wont go down there again until we get better...
