Title: Candy/Food Exchange anyone?
Post by: chanicakes on July 17, 2008, 10:11:16 pm
Someone told me about a great idea that I think we all could enjoy (and hopefully hasn't been done or talk about before)

If you want to also show off your odd candy or food's here feel free, it's cool to me.

I am not familiar with formal names, I know usuernames pretty well so if I don't correctly call a trade just let me know... uh nicely.

Guidelines
* Trade must be agreed upon by amount in  USD/CDN dollar amount
* Trade must be agreed upon also by both parties (Both persons in the trade)
* Full trade must also be confirmed to ensure both parties received the trade packages
* Verify ALL trades by both parties either posting and responding to eachothers request as a part of this thread or through PM'ing Chanicakes
* If unable to fulfill request please let the other party know and let us know that the trade could not be fulfilled (no reason needs to be given unless you want to say why)
* Parties can be within the same country but cannot be withing the same state, province, or territory; although it may be better to trade out of county.
* Addresses MUST be provided discreetly only to the person you are trading with, this is for your own personal safety.

These guidelines will hopefully make it eaiser for us to do this thing.

I looked through all the posts to try and collect the names of whom might want to do the trade. You can PM message me to let me know who you'd like to trade with off the list or you can openly say it in a post, and the person you choose does need to agree.

can someone from japan send me authentic pockey and ramen?

Back when I was in the 7th grade and a huge japfag I imported some pocky off the internet (or from a store that imported it or whatever either way it was from japan) because it was before you could buy it in walmarts

It's exactly the same

why different countries?? different areas within countries can have some pretty unique stuff.

I MIGHT do this but I probably won't ever feel like I have the extra money to blow. heres my profile

~Honeysmaks~
eastern Pennsylvania, USA
PA dutch country (original american-european foods, mainly german/dutch and some scandinavian). includes candies (too many to list) and stuff in jars like local honey witht the honeycomb still in it

I want marmite/Guinness Yeast Extract, PORK PIES if you can get them here without them spoiling? candies from anywhere as long as you can't get them here, maybe spices from an asian country. thank you :)
Title: Candy/Food Exchange anyone?
Post by: headphonics on July 17, 2008, 11:12:38 pm
because render different countries have radically different stuff.  idk down in the south they probably have shit we don't but if i'm gonna exchange candy i wouldn't just want a CHARLESTON CHEW!  foreign stuff is way cooler/harder to get i would say.

this is a cool idea. i always enjoyed getting packages of Japanese candy from my exchange student on holidays after she went back to Japan. i'd be up for this as long as i don't pair up with a creeper who wants my address. xD but meh i dunno. still, this is a good idea, and i hope some people do this and then post pictures of the weird foreign stuff they get. :D

well duhh but I wouldn't mind getting stuff from the other side of the country, as long as you can't get it here. there's even stuff in like MA you can't get here and I want it

OHH I just remembered, I could really use some German fanta. fanta tastes different in every area you can get it, and all I can buy here is american fanta or eastern european fanta. I want the kind that tastes more like an orange, wherever you can get that

In Canada we have maple flavoured everything seeing as how the stuff comes out of the trees.

I'd be up for this. I will mail an assortment of maple candy, Canadian beer, and Quebec-ish soups to someone in exchange for some good movie snackage (ie American snacks you can't get in Canada). I'm willing to throw in whatever else wierd Quebeckish stuff I can find.

Now just to be fair you can pick the person you want to send it to... they just need to agree... and I will in fact put my name up there as well.

You can PM the person and me so I know that's whom you chosen and can put you on the traded list (and if you still want to trade more I can put you on the Ok LISTING again.) to show whom you traded and when sorta thing... I will try to keep it organized for y'all!

I'm from Brazil. But I don't know what kind of unique weird stuff I could send. Food here is pretty regular... especially candy.
Title: Candy/Food Exchange anyone?
Post by: goldenratio on July 18, 2008, 03:38:52 pm
the best thing to do i guess would be to take a digital camera to a few stores near you and take pics of the candy/snack aisles or something. I mean you can say "everything is pretty regular here" but is it really?? you think so because you've lived with it your entire life but maybe its not!

That's what I thought, but they don't even have smarties! My uncle has instructed me to get a whole bunch of smarties before next time I see them (because m&m's are kind of shit compared to them)

you confused the hell out of me because I thought you were talking about Rockets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties_(Ce_De_Candy)).

Do they taste anything like sixlets? because those are fucking delicious.

I'm in Santiago, Chile btw...

And I already mentioned weird chocolates... But I'm not so sure what else I could send, I'd have to take a trip to the supermarket.

what the shit are sixlets?
Title: Candy/Food Exchange anyone?
Post by: goldenratio on July 18, 2008, 04:17:01 pm
smarties are nothing even close to m&m's or sixlets (sixlets are the best candy ever btw). smarties are basically compressed sugar pills

unless there is another kind of smartie. but smarties are still pretty fucking good but not related to m&m's/sixlets at all.

sixlets are basically chocolate sphere's witha  candy coating like M&M's but they are way better for some reason

I researched. Nestle makes something called smarties that are like m&ms:

Yes and sixlets are amazing.

And rockets are what we here in the US call smarties.

Holy shit, we used to have Smarties in Chile... They're probably still around somewhere.
They were pretty great, but probably RADIACTIVE FOR CHILDREN or something...

*Checks the online supermarket*

We've got cuchuflies that are basically rolled wafers filled with Dulce de leche, they can be found bare or coated in chocolate...
We've got chocolate with black pepper, red pepper, cinammon or ginger...
We've got a nice assortment of sweet candy confections...

... Our selection of original things isn't that great really... We've got a pretty good variety of imported stuff, though... From Oreos to german marzipan, spanish turrón and swiss chocolate...

I know in the east coast of canada there are some strange foods that you wouldn't think of like Poutine Chips (made by LAYS) and Birchbeer (Soda non-alcoholic, kind of like creamsoda meets dr pepper)... and a few other wierd ones... like candied bugs... So I guess if you wanted to do cross country that would still be different things... you'd just have to look harder.

Man, it's like a 20 minute walk for me, so maybe a 15 minute walk for you. But you ride your bike so I guess you could probably cut that down to 10.

Looking at this I've luckily dodged them all but yeah, for future reference we can't send any of that...

Going on the average price, sending something of like 1kg (probably maximum really) looks to be around $15 AUD to the US, though I could be mistaken...

My spanish friend was telling me about Congitos, which means 'little people of the congo' or something similar.

As far as i'm aware they're little brown chocolate balls with a steriotypical black man clenching a spear on the front, which just isnt on.

I'm also a bit skeptical about mailing food. Once my cousin posted me a letter with a piece of crackers with cream cheese, and it never arrived.

But when I sent her crackers inside a plastic envelope, it did... so...

Ok, here are some stuff that are don't know if are originally Brazilian, but are common around here.

It's a sweet made of peanuts. Nice.

Rapadura (something like "hard to sweep")
Don't know what it's made off. But it's hard and tastes good. Usually home-made, never seen one of those for buying.

Goiabada
A sweet thing made of goaba. People usually eat it with cheese, but I don't like cheese.

Paçoca
Also made of peanuts. Very strong sweet taste.

Cocada
Made of coconut. Very nice.

I'll post when I remember more.

Krówki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kr%C3%B3wki) are probably my favorite polish candies. They're these really soft and crumbly caramel-filled things that are just ridiculously delicious.

My second favorite are probably Pierniki (http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toru%C5%84skie_pierniki) which are these amazing gingerbread-ish/cinnamony/chocolate biscuit cookies often shaped as hearts (especially by their most popular brand) and usually contain a delicious marmalade center

I also really like "Delicje Szampanski" which are apparently described as "Polish apricot 'Jaffa Cakes'." They're these biscuit cakes covered in dark chocolate and filled with a variety of gelatin fillings such as orange, cherry, blueberry, apple pie, or apricot. I'm beginning to see these imported to local supermarkets so I guess theyre not very exotic anymore.

not necessarily!  you live in vegas which is a city and like all city it has a significant multicultural population i'm sure, which in turn means there are probably a lot of stores run by foreign people specializing in foreign food.  around here there are a lot of asian and arab markets, but i know of a russian supermarket (the name is seriously like 27 letters) nearby, and many other random european ones, so you know, you might have access to some stuff he doesn't.

holy shit I have both of these sitting in my drawer and they are AMAZING (Pierniki are better, though). I always used to eat that shit in russia and it was a relief knowing they have them here too :D

I really, really want some Vegemite or Marmite!  I had it once when I was like 12 and I really liked it, except you can't get it in America anymore!  I've done something like this before, from the UK, and I got these awesome candy hippos made of wafer and covered in vanilla frosting, but I can't remember the name of them.  SO YEAH add me to the list I live in Washington state.

Is it anything like these? These are like peanut butter sticks with coconut dusting. They're real brittle but they get stuck in your teeth.

This sounds like fun!

I'll join the list!

I'm not sure what Canada has that the US or UK wouldn't have though...does the US have Smarties?  I don't think you guys have Smarties...

EDIT:  Not the Smarties that are already mentioned in this thread.  I'm talking about Smarties that look (and are pretty much the same deal) as M&M's but they taste like 1,000,000 times better.

Title: Candy/Food Exchange anyone?
Post by: Alec on July 20, 2008, 02:32:06 pm
If they don't taste like sixlets then they aren't as good as sixlets, seriously.
Title: Candy/Food Exchange anyone?
Post by: Raimiette on July 20, 2008, 02:34:47 pm
...I have no idea what those are...

EDIT:  Do they taste super chocolaty?  Smarties are a more light milk chocolate taste which I think is nice.

I could send people some Coffee Crisp (I'm pretty sure it's only available in Canada).  It's a chocolate bar that's pretty good (it doesn't really taste like coffee but whatever).

Also there's Crispy Crunch, Aero, Chrunchie and Eatmore chocolate bars which I'm pretty sure are not available in the US (they might be available in the UK though).

I found this list of Canada Candy from Amazon.com.  If anyone wants something from the list I can probably find it.

well since a few people mentioned being able to get japanese candies, would anyone be able to get things like this (http://theanimeblog.com/japanese-snack-reviews/japanese-snack-review-meiji-candy-assortment/)? my exchange student would send me lots of those little candy boxes pictured on that page and i loved them. it'd be a real nice blast from the past to have some of that stuff, and the only store anywhere nearby that sold stuff like that went out of business. i haven't been able to find anything like it in years. :[
also for specific candies that i loved:
-Hello Panda (http://www.asianfoodgrocer.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2414)
-Yan Yan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan_Yan_%28snack%29)
-Hi-chew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hi-chew) (these are amazing)

if anyone has a shop nearby that sells things i'd love to make some sort of candy trade. i just can't really think of anything too interesting from Michigan. i mean, looking through this topic i have access to a lot of things people in other places don't, but i can't think of anything specific to where i live, like frickin VEGEMITE (which is just another word for AUSTRALIA) or anything.

Hm I don't know, I'd have to take a trip to Korea-town and take a look... It's sort of pretty far from my place but we've been wanting to go for a while with my GF now so perhaps we can do it soon and I'll see if I can find any of those.

EDIT: I hadn't seen those links you put...

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE OTHER TWO, and... I DON'T KNOW IF THEY SELL IT STILL... But I know, 100% sure... I've seen Yan-Yan in Korea-Town... Vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.

I just realized HEY THERES CHINATOWN which has some pretty vast asian supermarkets, so I don't need any of that. I'll look for your stuff too, but I think they mostly have stuff from south asia, china and korea.

I want marmite *the real deal* unless vegemite is exactly the same.

I want a Can of Barq's Root beer as they dont sell it here anymore! (that i know of)

I would trade a Newfoundland Pepsi for it!  ( Nl's pepsi is made with granulated sugar not glucose so it has a stronger "bite" taste to it and is very good... even though i stopped drining it like 3months ago, for no reason other than to be a bit healthier)

anyone up for it?

edit:what I can offer!

Pepsi (made w/ Granulated sugar rather than glucose syrup and thus a stronger and sweeter taste!)

I can get many different kinds of candy from the original olivers (not the US one, they are a different candy company) in calgary. The one that is open today has been open over 50 years so I am sure this store will have stuff that may be different...? I hope.

I'd really like some Dr Pepper (used to love that shit) and just generally any US stuff that we can't get here! I wanna get some snapple as well if possible. Also if someone could get me like 3-4 40 oz of Colt 45 Malt Liquor or something I'd love you forever. Like, seriously.

I can trade any food goods in Australia including Aussie beer or anything that you'd like. This is assuming that it's okay to send alcohol overseas! I'm not 100% sure on that. I can also send vegemite and any other wacky Aussie stuff. I'm gonna head to the supermarket in 3 days or so, so if anyone wants me to check stuff out or organize a trade please drop me a PM.

I agree. There are minors that do visit the site and also shipping liquor through mail is (as far as I know) limited to major distributors in shipping safe packaging. Pop is probably also bad in mail...

I thought there might be issues there - I've done it interstate before with packaging but I know that international is a lot different. As far as I know a certain amount is definitely allowed to be shipped here from overseas but I didn't think about the carbonated thing. I'll just have to wait til I get a chance to head over there!

I recently went to the store here and we finally got the fries and gravy chips hahaha! But seriously, anyone outside canada will probably not get the PC Buffalo Wing and Blue Cheese Chips that we have here. Also we have a store called crave, there are only two I know about in calgary and I know these are not too hard to ship anywhere in canada and the us (you can freeze them and send it in a cheap cooler bag and they stay fine) They are the best friggen cupcakes I have ever bitten into.
