Yeah apparently R* felt like making a GTA for the DS: Chinatown Wars. You may guess 3 times where it takes place. What Liberty City? HOW DID U KNO THAT?
Anyway, there's probably some talking goin' on in the E3 topic, but for the GTA fans I thought I'd make this topic to discuss their thoughts on the new GTA. Imo they should port GTAIV to PC first. And that name... Totally different style from what they've used so far. Tbh I don't really expect much from it. The DS has not much to offer in graphics, and boring LC again... Also GTA doesn't seem like the type of game to me that uses the stylus/touch screen.

the gba version sucked why should i care about another handheld version on a nintendo console?

Well I thought that too about LCS, but turned out nicer then I thought. Maybe this DS game will prove to be worth buying.

Yeah but you forget the PSP is capable of MUCH more then the Nintendo DS. This will most likely be a top down 2D game like the old ones.

Once, I thought that too. However a decent transformers DS game showed otherwise. Lots of pretty big 3D open worlds to explore, but the game had so many problems with it's missions. I thought to myself "If Transformers DS's did it, why not GTA?". I hope to GOD its 3D though...
-
I just looked up that Transformers game you're talking about, and yeah it looks good for the DS, but I think GTA would look pretty bad if it came out looking like that. The fact of the matter is that the PSP really is infinitely more capable of handling 3D shit, and while the GTAs for it look more or less like the ones for the PS2, a 3D GTA for the DS would just look silly and makeshift (like that transformers game), because the textures are terrible, the cars would be all aliased and lacking in detail, and the models would probably be awful at such a small size. Not that I'll play it either way, but I'm actually hoping they'll release a 2D one. That would be much more suited to the DS, and I don't think they've done one since the Playstation days. I'm sure some people around want a new 2D GTA again.

You cannot expect as much from the DS. Textures and such were NEVER the DS's strong point in 3D games. If 3D though, I want the GTA4 style shooting/cover mechanic....
-
Ok, but if we can't expect much from the DS than making a 3d GTA on the DS would be a stupid idea.
-
if any company can make a decent looking 3-d game for DS, it's rockstar. they pushed the PS2 very far with san andreas and generally they know a lot when it comes to making games work with limited hardware. that said, the DS is just not powerful enough i am afraid. i honestly cannot see a 3-d GTA working at all. if this isn't a 2d game, odds are it's going to look badly and most likely play badly as a result.

Though not the best example (because it sucked overall) there was a Driver game for the GBA that was in full 3D... cheap 3D but it maintained the overworld/ sandbox aspect. I haven't really played a game on the DS that does that (if the Transformers game does, then cool, I haven't tried that one myself) but I imagine a lot more could be done on hardware that actually has technology dedicated to rendering 3D worlds and objects.
Edit: Found one, once again, not the best example, but it's something. :P

HOLY FUCK! Best use of mode 7 EVER!!! XD
*looks for DRIV3R online*

that looks about on par with SUPERMAN 64 so i gotta give the gba developers some credit! i'd never seen it before.
-
Does anyone else think "Chinatown Wars" is a really stupid subtitle? Like, the writers decided it would be GREAT to have a game where different asian people can duke it out (this is what all asian people do - they hate each other and want the best access to drugges (they also meddle in illegal street racing)
-
Well, they managed to make Mario 64 look better on DS, so I see no reason why they couldn't do this in 3D.

kinda but i think within the context of the game it's not as stupid as it is out of it

This sounds like some stupid multiplayer deathmatch game to me.
if it's a proper GTA, they can get away with making it top-down like GTA 1 and 2, as long as they fix the fucking controls! I remember you had to actually press accelerate to make your wee man walk! And you had to steer him like a car! What the FUCK was THAT all about!?
Aye, top-down, some nice touch screen controls and some improved GTA 1 style graphics. I'll buy it... well, I won't BUY it, I'll download it and slap it on my R4.

Ah yes, the good ol' days of tank controls. It still baffles me why developers think it's a viable way of controlling a real human being (I'm looking at you Capcom).
-
I really hope this game doesn't try to be like the 3D GTAs or even the old top-down games either. Instead of trying to port the style of the other GTA games to the DS Rockstar should use a new style and system for this game that while still having that GTA feel works with the strengths of the DS.

lol technically they brought this back in GTA4 since if you're not holding the A/X button you're walking.

so it can't be a 3rd person action game or a top down action game... so maybe make it a platformer or an rpg???
i always had this idea in the back of my head to expand on drug wars by making it more "gta" like. i can't really explain how it'll work but it'll basically be a "choose your own adventure" game with action segments (mini-games like driving segments to escape from the police and first person shootouts or something) but... i really can't imagine how GTA will play if it's not top down or 3rd person. the whole point of the game revolves around jacking cars, driving really fast, and shooting people.
-
There is some really quite good 3d on the DS. Metroid Prime Hunters was pretty good, Mario Kart DS also so I wouldn't be surprised if they went that way. 2.5D is also likely.
Most of you are forgetting that the original GTA WAS 3D (It was only cars, peds and explosions that were 2D sprites).
Also, if they hype up a game at E3 they cannot possibly release a GTA:GBA clone because that would just be SO below par for quality in a Rockstar game.
And listen to all those PSP owners wail - you got two GTAs already keep your hair on!
Metroid:
MarioKart:
Though this one I think is the best:
Tony Hawks

If anything, Rockstar have a habbit of surpassing expectations, so judging this game based on it's platform/title seems stupid to me. 3D can be done on the DS so they could be doing it that way, it wouldn't be as WOW as the PSP games but why would anybody expect it to be?
-

None of those games are on the same scale as GTA. Even on the PSP the draw distance was very similar to GTA3. I'm not saying the game itself won't be good but GTA is primarily about driving fast and killing people in a big ass world and unless it copied the classic top down style you're really hurting the primary gameplay elements unless you change the gameplay completely (I'm thinking a sim or turn based strategy game or something).
I'm all up for a new style of Grand Theft Auto please mix the formula up but if they want it to follow the same path as the console versions like they did with the PSP versions they have a huge handicap to start with.

Well basically what I meant was that they shouldn't just try to port GTAIV's system over to the DS because due to control issues and some graphical issues it probability wouldn't turn out right and would have probably been better on the PSP to begin with. A top-down game while I see no reason it wouldn't work would probably feel dated nowadays (that is unless they include some of the features from newer GTAs, which would actually be quite interesting when you think about it). Now by no means am I saying it shouldn't be 3rd person just that it should use a new system fit for the DS instead of porting one of the other engines.
I actually like your idea alot and it wouuldn't bother me at all if it ended up something like that.
-
I don't know about you guys but I am PROFOUNDLY uninterested in this game. Did anybody in the entire world actually ask for this?
-
People who own a DS and like GTA but don't want to get a PSP?
Man I am just being crazy here or something. All DS owners hate GTA because it's not cute and cuddly.
-
DS I love thee
but fucking hate the Wii
so I bought a PS3
then I jerked off in a tree
onto your PSP
Cause I dunnae like so-neeeeeeeeee
What else rhymes with heee?
I'm so crap at poetry...

Cute and cuddly is for the Imagine and Petz fans. There are some DS owners who want a few more "less cuddly" games like Contra IV or Dementium for example. :P (Contra IV especially)

Well, its called Chinatown Wars, maybe it's just the first island, or a small area. It could be made to include building inners and stuff, but I doubt it'll be a very big world. It could also be multiplayer centric, and I have absolutely no idea how they'll manage both screens. Unless the bottom screen is top-down view and the top screen is 3d. That'd be kind of interesting and would be great for accurate directional shooting.
I'll probably end up buying this for sure. That company has yet to fail me. I even enjoyed Bully.

One screen gameplay, one screen map.
I just called it, I get all your dapp when screenshots are revealed and I'm right.

I wouldn't even deny that as a possibility. Having a map elsewhere just removes one less bit of clutter from the actual gameplay screen and would probably allow them to do a bit more if it has any touch oriented controls. (let alone having a large map already displayed by default)

You know what? That could actually work! Beats having to pause every fucking second to see the map(yes I know there is a mini map in GTA games, but a bigger version sounds more efficient)

No shit, isn't this the logical approach?
-
Top top: In GTA4 you can press a direction button and it zooms out on the map
-
a NOT BORING gta2 would be perfect for the ds
-
shut up, gta2 was great.
-
Yeah, especially when you wanted to save the game.

The bottom screen could be a map/control screen, while the top could be the action in third person. It could still use oldschool GTA style controls while you can see what's going on with the top screen.
-
Doesnt pretty much every fucking DS game with a map function use the bottom screen for the map?

It's normally the top one because you interface with the bottom one due to it's touchscreenieness :)
GTA2 was great. I especially enjoyed making hamburgers out of Krishas.
