Title: Research For A Short Novel!
Post by: something bizarre and impractical on July 21, 2008, 07:26:39 am
Without going into too much detail about the plot I would like to get some input from you guys that will help me write this short novel (or novella, if you want). I would normally post something like this in Literature, but thought it might be fun for some discussion as well. So, without further ado, here is a summary:

One day a mysterious being shows up on Earth. This being demonstrates vastly superior intelligence, and seems to posses powers beyond anything that our technology would allow (teleportation, transmutation of materials, telekinesis, et cetera). It declares that in ten days it will annihilate our species unless a certain condition is met. This being selects YOU, for no particular reason, as a representative for our species. The condition is that you must prove, any way you feel, that the Human species is worth saving, or that at least some of them are worth saving. The being offers to take you anywhere on the planet you desire if it will aid you in proving that we should be saved. The being also offers to provide for you by creating any materials that you may need as well.

So, if you haven't caught on yet, my question to you is how would you go about demonstrating that our species is worth saving? Or do you not think it is worth saving?

Humans? What?

I admit, I have no clue on how I'd prove our race requisite of saving. Truely, a hard question. Based on analysis, these "beings" would probably view our destructive nature, path of technology and naivity, and annhilate us based on purely that. :hmm:

I condone the destruction of the human race. Give the planet back to the animals.

I watched a documentary once about this spaceship that crash landed on a planet that was ruled by apes and in the end it turned out it was earth in the future. Crazy.

Quote
Peter, Susan and Duncan end up together again with Kreeblim and Broxholm as they decide to join their forces to defend Earth in front of the interplanetary council. In order to do this, they explore Earth to find a proof that humanity is worth saving. (My Teacher Flunked the Planet.)

My teacher is an alien lol, reminds me of My Parents are Aliens.

Like get them to take you back in time so they can meet mother Teresa or a better figure of kindness. Also taking them to see two humans on a real cheesy date would be funny, especially if the girl turned down the guy at the end of the date.

Or...do what they did in Macross and sing to the Aliens following the impending doom of your species. Yakk Deculture!

I think humanity is worth saving. I feel that most people are good hearted in nature but relatively ambivalent in the way they live. I don't think that an individual is inherently evil, but that people are moral agents, but sometimes neglect this fact when making descisions.

We're kinda just "here", doing our thing. Leave us alone. How would you like it if I went to YOUR PLANET, ficticious character, and told you guys that I didn't think your species was worth saving? What's that? You wouldn't? Treat us fellow sentients with some reciprocity then.

if it was me i would have my despicable main character ruin the story and enslave this alien civilization and turn all of their pretty alien technologies into nike sweatshops. humanity as a virus.

imo that says more about humanity than anything a nice little moral could

(ps if you take this concept i'm going to sue you)

Me too. I had it in like a collection of THREE BOOK IN ONE and I bought it from a school book fair with my pocket money.

it was a pretty good book! until the ending... psh

I used to have a bunch of bruce coville books that were collections of short stories, i think they are pretty good reading for preteens

but if I was going to write the book mentioned in the OP I would read this for 'research', and also watch The Day the Earth Stood Still, and maybe go and actually see some good things people have done; even then this sounds kind of hack-y.  like really really hacky.  just my opinion

This scenario happens a lot. I think TV tropes says it pretty well:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HumanityOnTrial

lazy:

So yeah its been done a lot. There isn't really a non-cheesy way of dealing with this because the question is pretty cheesy to begin with. The only way out is pretty much to like, make the protagonist not play by the alien's rules at all and trick him into letting them live somehow, not actually really addressing the question of justifying humanity. Or maybe attacking the aliens' arrogance or something, like making the protagonist attack the very idea of having to justify anything.

I'd prove that the human race is worth saving by beating the alien's fleshy forehead in with a mallet and sending his lifeless carcass back to the mothership as a message to the rest of them.

TODAY WE CELEBRATE OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY.

whats the motivation for destroying our race (i assume the whole planet right?)? intergalactic highway or something i mean why would an alien being/race want to destroy a species (and leave the planet?)

what dickheads i would just say "fine destroy our race you jerk i hope you can live with yourselves"

Yeah, have him transport to a location where all the armies of the world are waiting to murder him/drop nukes on him, etc.
I don't know whether the majority of the human race should live unless they change their view of the world (i.e. believing they know the best and only way to live, etc).
