Title: Recommend me some 360 games
Post by: Izekeal on July 23, 2008, 11:30:46 pm
I got into a discussion with one of my roommates today and he accused me of not playing any game made for a current gen console.  I own a psp and a ds but apparently those don't count as they don't have awesome graphics or something.  Anyways we're both at a loss as to which games I should try out.  He's got a few but none that interest me.

There's a few genres of games I prefer: Racing, Action Adventure, Adventure.  I used to like RPGs but I don't really like console RPGs anymore as they mostly seem to be JRPGs and I haven't seen one that looks innovative.

As for a few specific recent games/series I like there's F-Zero X & GX, Burnout: Takedown, Syphon Filter (all), Paper Mario, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

We've got a bunch of 360 games in the house, only a few of which I've played (the ones in bold), but all of which I've seen being played.  Those are: Gears of War, Circle of Doom, Jericho, Dead Rising, Call of Duty 4, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Forza 2, Madden 08, Nhl 2k7 & 2k8, Halo 3, The Outfit, Crackdown, Blue Dragon, Grand Theft Auto 4, Devil May Cry 4, Lost Odyssey, Dynasty Warriors Gundam, NFS Most Wanted, Project Sylpheed, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Gun

So yeah, I'm basically looking for suggestions that aren't those games, specifically ones similar to the games/genres I like.

Games to check out:
Mass Effect
Devil May Cry 4
Ninja Gaiden 2
Just Cause
Gears of War
Fatal Inertia
Stranglehold
Hitman: Blood Money

Play Mass Effect. It's an RPG, but it's made by a great company and it is a wRPG.

You've got alot of great gams in your list. I'd recommend Dead Rising, CoD4, GTA4 and DMC4

I only played the Assassin's Creed demo and it's a little weird, but you should try that out too.

As for other games than that.. I don't really know. :D

I've seen my roommates play Dead Rising for long enough that I don't think I'd have fun playing it, not really a fan of FPS games, GTA 2 was the only GTA I enjoyed and I've played almost all of them.  I'll add DMC 4 to the list I guess but I played the first one and it wasn't anything special.

Yeah man, are you crazy? Go play Dead Rising immediately. GTA4 and DMC4 are pretty great (I think you'd like DMC4 judging by your genre preferences), and I'm also going to throw in a recommendation for Project Sylpheed. Once you get past the first two levels, it's pretty good fun.

edit: was meant to post before you, izekeal, sorry!

Ok, I get it, we have some good games.  I'd prefer it if you guys could recommend games that we don't have.

Also, I'd probably like the Ratchet & Clank series but I only have a ps2 and psp, no ps3.

Try out Ninja Gaiden Black from XBL marketplace and if you like that, get Ninja Gaiden 2.  GRID is awesome from what I have played, Burnout:Revenge is also good, for the random genre category, try out Beautiful Katamari.  Hope these all help.

I may check out Ninja Gaiden, but I've seen reviews for GRID and I've played Burnout: Revenge (didn't like it as much as Takedown).  Beautiful Katamari might be fun but if I'm playing a less serious game I'd prefer it to be on a handheld.

Definitely get Beautiful Katamari.  I thought the PSP Katamari was atrocious to play.

Do you like shoot-em-ups?
Title: Recommend me some 360 games

Shoot-em-ups are ok, but I prefer the mindlessness of older fps games or 3rd-person shooters that are similar to Syphon Filter.

Just Cause is pretty fun and it's only like 5-10$ so it's not a huge investment.

Honestly, I recommend Bladestorm to anyone who's willing to check it out.  At first I passed the game off as another Dynasty Wars hack and slash but it's actually a strategy game where you control a group of units on the ground and you have a hero that can switch out units and take control of any friendly group in the area.  There's a MAAAASIVE map and your goal is to either help the English or the French in winning whatever war it is they're fighting.  The game is measured in days and at the end of each day a score is tallied based on strongholds taken over and units killed and one of the sides is claimed the victor.  Because you're a mercenary, you can switch sides in game and as one side grows weak they start offering more pay (but there's still a clear road to victory).

Pretty fun game.

Also, Assassin's Creed is good, but frustrating at times.

but...you do have some very good games what is the point of going out to look for all these others when...you haven't even played like 2/11ths (fraction simplifying ahoy!) of your list...

also Battlefield: Bad Company is a quirky fun game but you don't really like FPSes so :/

try Splinter Cell: Double Agent. that's fun.

I've watched four people play that game and I don't really feel like checking it out.

Edit: There was a racing game I remember reading about a few years ago.  The vehicles are souped-up fighter jets with the weapons removed and you race through circuits and whatnot that have been specifically constructed for the planes you're flying.  Something about the future having become peaceful and, instead of decommissioning the planes they're turned into racing vehicles instead.  That's about all I can remember though.  If it's on the 360 or ps2/cube/xbox then I'd like to check it out as I remember the graphics looked pretty good.

Found the game.  It's for the psx.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSN5YFZG-hg

holy shit dude i'm fucking serious. that's what you've said about a shitload.

"i've watched people it's not interesting"

go play the games. really. i don't get it. half the shit i see doesn't look appealing but turns out to be fun...know why? because i played it! watching someone else playing it is like...cutting the fun factor/appeal to -50%.

what the hell man. i sound really pissed (but i'm not trying to yell at you) but...go play some games.

half the games on your list is really good and bioshock is my game of the year for 2007...what the hell man?

It's mostly true.  I don't own very many new games.  The last systems I bought a lot of games for are the Gamecube and PS2.  I have a small assortment of games for my DS but I mainly play games off of my supercard for it.  As for watching people play games, after seeing the bigger scenes in games as they're being played by other people it's not as much fun reliving those events for myself so I'm looking for games that I haven't already seen being played.

Also, there's six games in the list of ones I'll probably check out.  I appreciate the suggestions so far.

Edit: I don't really want to play a FPS so I guess that'll save some time.

The point of this topic isn't for everyone to blindly suggest games they like, I was kind of hoping for people to take a few seconds to read the games I like and then make some suggestions based off of those even if you yourself might not necessarily like the game(s) you're suggesting all that much.  I can be the final judge as to whether I will actually enjoy a game or not and I'm looking for ones that play similar to F-Zero X & GX, Burnout: Takedown, Syphon Filter (all), Paper Mario, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, for starters.

Opening the topic after reading "Recommend me some 360 games", blowing by my first post, and then suggesting a fps isn't going to get either of us anywhere.  Actually, that's a lie, it does get us somewhere, but only to a place that neither of us want to be.

Edit: Another game I enjoyed was Oni, though I've only played the PC version.

Well man, the problem is there aren't too many games out for the Xbox 360 right now that fit your description. Everyone has pretty much recommended all the games that are out for the system. I'll try my best to give you some recommendations, though. Burnout Paradise is pretty good from what I've heard, so you might like that much more than Revenge. Skip Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and go straight the the the second one, it's really good. You might like Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2, but I am not too sure how similar it is to the Syphon Filter games.
That's all I can really think of. Most of the games have been mentioned. I'd probably rent some of these if you're really on edge with them.

I think you mean everyone has already recommended all the blockbuster/big name titles for the system.  There's probably some other games out there that not many people have tried and those are more likely to be the ones I will end up playing (like the two Marcus suggested).  I, like the rest of you, already know of pretty much all the popular games that are out for the 360 so I don't need you to recommend them to me.  Instead, it'd be nice if people threw out suggestions of less popular games.  So far I haven't learned anything that I couldn't have gotten from a quick trip to my local games store as they'd be just as apt to suggest Bioshock, Devil May Cry 4, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Gears of War, etc.

If there aren't any games out for the 360 that would be similar in style to the ones I've suggested then that's fine but I have an inkling suspicion that isn't the case.  Also, for the record, Burnout Paradise is probably the worst one in the series, I played it for a while and it was pretty bad.

Edit: Please stop recommending FPS games as well.  I'm not really a big fan of the genre to start and I don't want to play one on a console.

Ninja Gaiden 2....its pretty in your face from the get go. Even if youve played the first one, you get some of the new weapons early enough for it still to be a pretty new experience.

Actually I did but the fact you keep saying Ive watched them and decided you don't like them made me think "Fuck it, just play them"  and say them anyway. But if your looking for more low key games that are alright I guess..

Amped 3 - It's a pretty cool snowboarding game with nice graphics. But not much different from SSX if you've played those.
Fatal Inertia - Haven't actually played this but give it a try. Info. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_Inertia)
Fight Night Round 3 - This game is the shit, just play it.
Burst Limit - It's Dragonball Z but an alright game, nice effects an what not.
Dark Sector - Played the demo, just reminded me off Gears of War but you might like it.
Ace Combat 6 - If you've ever played a flight simulator.. This is shit loads better.
Condemned Series - First Person but ok still and their supposed to be horror games.
Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars - It's C&C their alright games.
Army of Two - Haven't played this yet but I heard it's good.

Try those.

Oh shit I'm surprised no one's mentioned Condemned (and neither did I).

Okay it's an "FPS" but to be honest it's REALLY good. It's a different style (scary/horror type game). Also, it doesn't really fit the FPS mold all the way. The focus is on melee combat and you hardly use guns at all, so it was a "new" twist. The first one was a launch title for the 360 and was pretty much a sleeper hit. I really suggest it. Just try it.

Also, I'm going to third Beautiful Katamari. I really don't understand some of your preferences. Not-serious = Handheld? You really make like no sense sometimes Izekeal. Just get it, it's not a very expensive game (what I think it's like $20 now) and it's got a lot of replay value if you get into it. It's just a quirky game that you should (most likely) fall in love with.

If you like racing, go for Project Gotham Racing 3 or Project Gotham Racing 4. It's more...real racing, but yeah I hear it's pretty good. I had the 3rd one and I played it and I got out of it rather fast, but that's generally because I don't like racing games!

Do you like stuff like the Elder Scrolls? Because Oblivion is for the 360 and it's pretty damn good. Like a lot of people loved it (then shortly after started talking about flaws because the trend went that way but w/e) but it's generally a really good Elder Scrolls game. Look it up!

Burnout: Paradise is claimed to be a REALLY good Burnout game so if you enjoy that, check it out.

Command & Conquer 3 is supposed to be a really well-done strategy game on the 360. It has relatively good ratings and people say it's fun so check it out?

I mentioned Splinter Cell: Double Agent but I don't know if you said anything about it. It's a good game, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's not as stealthy as its predecessors but you can still do your best to be stealthy in it. It's still fun!

Considering you weren't into GTA that much, I'm not sure how much you'll like it but... Check out Saints Row. It's a pretty fun game, similar to the style of GTA but different in ways. Some people loved it (me etc.) and some hated it, so who knows? It has a sequel coming out this fall I believe.

Hitman: Blood Money is a good third-person stealth game. I haven't played it myself but I really want to some time. A lot of people think it's an awesome Hitman game. I really suggest you check this out too!

Bully: Scholarship Edition is a revamped edition of Bully, obviously! Bully is a really fun game from Rockstar but if you've already played it I don't think there's a LOT of incentive to buy this.

Lastly, if you like the music/rhythm games I know you've probably heard a lot of shit but maybe try Guitar Hero? Or save up a shitload of money ($190) to buy Guitar Hero: World Tour which comes out this fall, or Rock Band 2, or something like that. They're shaping up to be pretty good.

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS
Condemned
Beautiful Katamari
Oblivion
Saints Row
Hitman: Blood Money

There we go. A lot haven't been mentioned here.  :)

I didn't know you have a PS2. OK, that changes things:

Ratchet and Clank (whole series except last one is PS3)
Jak and Daxter
Lego Star Wars
Ace Combat
Onimusha series (1, 2, 3 and the battle one for multi... though it's not THAT good. More like Super Smash Onimusha, with the perk of playing as Megaman.EXE)
Mark of Kri
Rise of the Kurai (spelling?)
and I'll get back to you. Have to get to work... There's such a wealth of games on PS2.

Oh, Viewtiful Joe series is kick ass and hard as hell.

yeah but how many of those games did you actually like/play? I mean pretty much every game before the PS2 was fairly linear, and you said you don't like linear games, and you said you don't like sandbox games, and there's a HUGE CACHE of genres you said you don't like, it sounds like you don't really like games all that much and are more into casual gamer market, which there's nothing wrong with (I play mostly casual games), but then people suggest more casual games and you're like "No I don't want to play a casual game on the console" I don't really get what you want.

Just so you know.... Assasin's Creed isn't very sandbox at all. Much of the game is in the same vein as Prince of Persia only you go about your buisness in big open playgrounds in the guise of towns instead of a straight path through caves/dungeons/castles. I know what it looks like though. A lot of people had that idea. It's primarily why it was hyped to death before it came out... and why it fizzled by a week after. Alot of people where disappointed by the linearity and the similarity to PoP..... but if you like that sort of thing... check it out.

Two Thrones would probably be fun.  Also I enjoyed about 50% or so of the games I own for all those systems I listed.  I collected video games for a while so some of them I bought just to add to my collection.

I don't recall saying I don't want a linear game; that's actually more what I'm looking for.  Sandbox games are only as fun for as long as you can entertain yourself while playing one and I get bored easy if there's no clear goal.

Also, I was at Blockbuster today and picked up Kameo: Elements of Power. (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/kameoelementsofpower?q=kameo)  It's pretty fun so far and I'll probably finish it before the weekend's over.

well if you actually...you know, DO STUFF and explore dead rising can be really fun. and also i never said quirky = not repetitive? where do you get this because there's a period before i started talking about quirkyness!

plus i find it really funny that you criticize dead rising but advocate assassin's creed. assassin's creed got boring fast...it's an alright game and has an alright story but is boring:

leave city > ride horse for about 10 minutes > arrive at and sneak in town > eavesdrop/assassinate/grab flags/beat up someone > talk to guild > assassinate main guy > watch scenes > leave city > ride horse for about 10 minutes > etc. rinse and repeat

Yeah man, I used to just play Dead Rising up until like the Carlito dude starts shooting you up in the food court and stopped after that because I couldn't be bothered or something, and wanted to kill the zombies... then of course I ran out of time getting onto the next mission and I spent too much time taking survivors back and shit like that. Then I actually tried going through it and beating all the cases and had a SHITLOAD of fun. This sounds stupid but Dead Rising isn't ALL about KILL AS MANY ZOMBIES AS POSSIBLE (well it is...... but it's sort of... side to the cases? I dunno, like you can kill as many zombies as you want but IN A LIMITED TIME FRAME sorta) and once you get over that fact and start going through it can be really fun. .

Yeah, pretty off-topic, and a god damn horrible post that made little sense, but there you go.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but in addition to what everyone else has mentioned, pick up Fable II when it is released. The first one was good, albeit too short and small, but the second in the series seems to improve a lot on the original's shortcomings. You said you don't really like console RPGs anymore, but you did mention Mass Effect, since it certainly isn't a JRPG. Fable II isn't a JRPG either, and I can't say it is great since it hasn't been released, but it's certainly worth a look!

If you haven't checked it out already, you might wanna check out Lost Planet for the xbox 360. The only reason why I thought I'd recommend it is because I hate first person shooters, I absolutely loath them, but for what it was, being a third person shooter, I really liked the Syphon Filter series, even if the only reason was to use that EMP Tazer and watch all your victims burn to a slow fiery death.

In the case of Lost Planet, they seem to toss in enough variety in order to keep things interesting; you fight snow pirates as well as these monsters called the akrid  and you get to jump into these mech suits from time to time and each level ends with a crazy/frustrating boss fight. But overall It progresses in the same linear fashion as Syphon Filter did but with fewer check points.

One thing I thought that was neat about the game is if you toss a grenade and if you're good enough, you can shoot it immediately afterwards and it'll make this splash effect.

Not a lot of people like this game, so this might be right up your alley, who knows.

how stupid are you.

I'm playing through it now and its the same thing, nine times. its the picture of repetitiveness. luckily its a little bit of fun, but at this point I'm playing to see the conclusion to the horrible, horrible, story.

Yeah, Lost Planet sounds good.  And, as a bonus, my roommate just bought it.

Also, for the record, I'm not going to play Dead Rising or Assassin's Creed.  Sorry.

Yeah the ending makes the entire game worth it.

It is easily the most wtf ending out at the mo. Even moreso than Crysis'!!

man i just wonder like... what made them think it was a good idea to throw THE FUTURE into that?  it would've been an ACCEPTABLE story had they just left it in the past, but it really stops making sense once you make him a guy in the future with DNA MEMORY.  seriously it is so bad as to almost be funny, which makes me hope that maybe it was all a joke even though i know it wasn't.  but yeah AC is very very fun for like the first 3 missions and then progressively less and less interesting for the next 6 or 7.

Wasn't going to play it anyways!

I think I'm more interested in some upcoming games for the 360 (new PoP, Fallout 3, etc) so I'll probably end up checking those out too.  DS and psp are where it's at though.

You know I mentioned Fable II, I want to say that it's a shame that it is exclusive to the Xbox 360. I'd really love to play it on the PC.

To continue with HL.

Also, GoldenRatio, you learn that there is the future part of the game in the first... three seconds, it really is not a spoiler.

AND, I am going to third and double third the Condemned series.  The first game is just a plain horror thriller and is awesome.  The second was is more of a action horror thriller, but they expand the story and the hand to hand combat is some of the best I have seen in any game.

Not everyone can play video games for 20+ hrs a week.

Maybe you need to spend more time playing video games on the can :(

I didn't say assassin's creed wasnt repetitive? I said I found it was the same shit over and over in Dead Rising, shit being stuff I found really boring

I didn't find AC's..little..bit of repetitiveness... boring at all, I found it really fun, all the way through the game, but I couldnt stand Dead Rising for more than like 10min

i guess i am just..that stupid steel, just that stupid...

Let us know how Lost Planet is. I played the demo ages ago. Based on that, my rating of the game is "balls". I'd like to know how the actual game compares, but after the demo I'm not quite compelled to seek it out.

imho lost planet is okay, has a stupid anime plot and the mech stuff is kind of dumb and not that fun. it's a very OLD SCHOOL styled game so if you want to play 3d Contra that isn't as hard and in snow, that's your game.

Yeah idk like when I played the demo, I was like "holy shit this is pretty interesting."

Then I bought it, played like 6 levels and then haven't played it in like a year. You lose interest really fast in that too. There are too many sections where it is like CROSS VAST SNOW EXPANSE that takes you like 10 minutes with nothing around.

Hitman Blood Money is pretty good. It's not a perfect game, but it's one where the FUN FACTOR is pretty much as high as it can be, one of those games where you're easily able to look past its shortcomings.

Most of the shortcomings are around the AI behavior once you turn it into a RUN AND GUN FPS, AI behavior of crowds, various bugs (sound fucks up sometimes, some people get invincible by being stuck in a death animation (this is rare and has happened like 3 times ever to me)) and generally not enough fun levels :(

the fun levels are brilliant though. especially the casino.

also DEAD RISING is a pretty acquired taste imo. i thought killing zombies was really, really fun, but once you get a couple of days into it (in game time) there's just a ridiculous amount of zombies which makes it really hard and frustrating to do shit like grab a gun from the gun shop. and some (most) of the bosses are ridiculously hard.

the zombie killing part is really really fun and inventive though and kind of sandboxy, in the way that you'll make up cool scenarios for yourself and ways to kill them off. it's only too bad it gets way too crowded every once in a while and it's too bad those bosses sometimes pop up :(

for some reason it reminds me of state of emergency.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed which is a kickass remake of the NES Bionic Commando but with new features(using your arm to pick up stuff in the environment for defensive/offensive purposes to name one), amazing HD graphics, great shooting/platforming action, and it even has co op and competitive multiplayer(local only sadly). It is 800 microsoft points on the Xbox Live Arcade which is awesome :)
