Title: Game Recommendation Topic
Post by: UPRC on July 25, 2008, 10:50:07 am
I stumbled across a topic which didn't have much of anything in it other than "I hate this game" and I thought that it seemed a little lacking, especially for an opening post so I said to myself, "Hey, there should be a topic for people who want to recommend (or not recommend) a game they've recently played and explain why."

So here we are!

How will this work? Simple. If you've played a new game recently which you think GW should REALLY know about (whether it be a good game or bad game) and you're just too lazy to formulate a nice, big topic about the game.. Then hey, why not tell us what you think here? I'll get the ball rolling.

I haven't played too many new games lately because the PS3's release schedule is a bit lacking at the moment, so I'm going to have to shoot for games which are NOT as popular as, say, Metal Gear Solid 3 or other I don't know, Assassin's Creed. Generally any game that sells well and people are really receptive towards.

I'll do a PS3 game and a PC game because hey, that's all I have except for a DS which I don't play much at all (but I might go over a DS game that I liked too).

If enough people post here then I might compile some sort of "recommendations list" and put it right below this line so yeah, we'll see how that goes.

Well, I would definitely NOT recommend Assassin's Creed.  Somehow it managed to get good reviews after launch and people seem to have mistakenly picked up on this idea that it's a good game, but honestly it's hardly worth a rental.

Yeah, running around in ancient Jerusalem and climbing shit is kinda fun.  Yeah, the hidden blade that dude has up his sleeve is kinda sexy (but completely worthless in, you know, actual battle).  Other than that there are hardly any merits to this game at all.

First of all, gameplay is entirely too repetitive.  It's basically:  climb on your horse, go to location, save THE SAME CIVILIAN OVER AND OVER AGAIN, kill your target, climb on your horse, master rewards you with more throwing knives.  That's it!  If you're playing through the game waiting for some incredibly epic shit to happen in which you might actually utilize your abilities as a so-called "master assassin" then you're going to find yourself unimaginably disappointed.

NPC dialogue is also very monotone and stale.  There are maybe three different civilians that you save from the same group of guards every time.  It's always "ooh help me!"  "arg i'm a guard i'll fuck you up" and then "i...will tell the others of your skill".  Every fucking time, guys.  I'm not joking.

I won't spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't had the misfortune of playing this game yet, but I will say that my major problem with the game lies within the plot.  It's a great premise, but as you progress through the story it becomes more uninspired and boring than anything else.

So yeah, I said it.  Basically, Assassin's Creed fucking sucks!

Yeah, I'd have to agree on Assassin's Creed. It has a really cool world that is fun to explore, but overall it is a VERY repetitive and tedious game and in the end, it's not very rewarding.

I'm with Bled. Assassin's Creed? Rent it first and see if you like it.

The only recent game I've played is No More Heroes, for Nintendo Wii. I think it's a great game, with some flaws. But still great.

+Pos:
-Amazing battle system
-Fucked up storyline
-Great boss fights
-It WILL make you laugh
-Great characters
-Great visuals
-Amazing soundtrack (seriously, one of my favorite ones)
-Has moderate replaybility

+Cons
-Worldmap is boring, mostly lifeless
-"Jobs" get boring, FAST
-It's a SHORT game

Overall, that's what pissed me off. The game is really short, and sometimes repetitive. You see, the whole plot goes around your main character, trying to be the world's #1 assassin, you're ranked numer 11, and you have to beat 10 bosses to get to  number one. And what's in between those fights is what gets boring fast. Those minigames suddenly become more tedious than fun, and you're just like "omg 3 more jobs and I fight next boss".

So, overall. Rent it, I finished it in two days. Although it has some replayability, I don't think it's really really worth it.

For those of you who are looking for a good FPS and have a PS3, I would definitely recommend Resistance:  Fall of Man.  It's sort of atypical for an FPS in that it actually has a great plot and it's good for more than three hours of play.  The visuals are also really awesome.

Above all, creature design and weapons are probably the strongest points for the game.  As you fight your way through different battlefields you collect weapons from both sides.  Some are prototypes that were designed by humans and others are taken from the wicked arsenal of the monsters.  Most notably there's a grenade that shoots needles in all directions and can actually pin your foes to a wall!

The creatures are really friggin' nasty, too.

There's also some really great multiplayer fun to be had on the Playstation Network.  Online battles are capable of supporting up to 40 players in one match, and it's locked at 22 FPS so there's hardly ever any lag.

This one's been out for a while so you might actually be able to pick it up for a discount.  It was one of the PS3's signature launch titles and they're getting ready to launch Resistance 2 sometime either later this year or early next.  It'll make a great buy and you'll still have time to get caught up with the story before the sequel.

Yeah, I don't really like FPSes on consoles but I have been considering of getting Resistance since it looks pretty great. Is there any chance that it will end up on PC?

Alone in the Dark (PS2/3, XBOX360, Wii)   -- Do not recommend

I bought this game recently (couple of weeks ago) for the Wii, and I am strongly disappointed in it.  Perhaps it's the fact that the Wii version is a port of the PS2 version with motion controls, but I digress.  I'm doing a mini-review of the Wii version, since thats the version I own.

1: Control Issues -- The 3 or 4 driving sections suck, and if you mess up once you'll usually end up dying even if nothing happens on screen.  Opening your inventory is also a pain in the ass.  (though once you figure it out, it'll work a third of the time.  All other controls work fine though.

2: Plot -- If you wish to understand this game, pick up the 360, or PS3 version, as the Wii and PS2 versions only include about half of the story.  I beat the game, and have no idea what was happening for the last 4 chapters.  absolutely nothing is explained other than

3: Graphics -- Yes, I understand graphics aren't going to be impressive on the Wii, or PS2, but the game looks like an early PS2 game.  Seriously the PS2 needs to die already.

If you are going to pick it up, get the 360 or PS3 version, and rent it.  Oh, and don't worry about getting stuck EVAR.  You can go to the main menu and skip the chapter you're stuck on, and you'll see a clip show that will try to catch you up.  (Wii version doesn't play any dialogue segments, and repeats the same clip show for all 3 chapters in each "act")

I kinda doubt it.  Maybe in a couple of years when R2 is done selling and there are greater things going on with Pandemic and the PS3.

Resident Evil 4 on the PS2, I recommend this game to anyone who loves the RE series and anyone who hasn't played any of the series. There are lots of weapons, weapons can be upgraded, unlockable content and well I personally love the aiming in the game which is way better than previous RE aiming systems.

One thing that I didn't really like about it is it still has those kind of puzzles where you "Get this key from here and go all the way back here to unlock this door" but there was one which I had to use a walkthrough for...

I recommend Resident Evil 4.

However I do not recommend Stranglehold on the Xbox 360, I mean it was repetitive and you just keep doing the same thing all over again, they even have a kind of max payne slow motion ability called tequila time -.- but one thing I liked was there was a skill you could activate and it allowed you to shoot at enemies in slowmotion but it also showed where the bullet hit like in a kind of movie style animation which I thought was really awesome.

I do not recommend Stranglehold.

Broken Sword 1 & 2 for PC and psx

I think a lot people have played them, but I haven't seen so much talk about them on GW at all. They're probably my favourite games.

For those who don't know, Broken Sword is a point and click adventure game with a cartoon style graphic. The game follows George Stobbart, an American Laywer with an incredibly dry sense of humour. Your quest is usually to solve some sort of murder mystery that takes you across the globe.  The NPCs you encounter in different countries are often stereotypes of their culture, but having something entertaining to say.

I would go as far as saying it has the best dialogue of any video game ever and certaintly the best character, George Stobbart!
