So recently I've been watching a bunch of romance films/chick flicks. It started out with The Notebook (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0332280/) which I thoroughly enjoyed and I've been downloading others such as P.S. I Love You (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431308/) (even though I'm not too fond of Hilary Swank) and If Only (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0332136/). (I also enjoyed Tristan + Isolde (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375154/) and A Walk to Remember (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0281358/))
The only thing weird about me liking all these movies is that, well, I think I like them a little too much, haha. I'm a bit oversensitive when it comes to... life, haha, and I tend to be oversensitive about these movies and start crying. Anyway, I'm asking for ideas on other movies like this that I can watch. If anyone knows of some really good ones, I'm not really into any of the indie ones, but anything mainstream in the last 20 years is really what I'm looking for. So if anyone has some good suggestions or enjoys these kind of movies like I do, it would really appreciated. Thanks!

hahaha a walk to remember. i thought you were going to bring up good ones!
-
last one I saw was Matchpoint
-
so basically you want movies that will make you cry? and you like nicholas sparks novels?
um cruel intentions is pretty similar to some of those. also gonna say pride and prejudice and 10 things i hate about you, pretty much anything with julia roberts, love actually, princess diaries :'( i was going to list every chick flick i could think of but i don't know that many and a lot of them don't have that weird tragic thing that you seem to like, so i just looked at the imdb threads for a walk to remember instead. john hughes stuff, i think my girl might be like that, shakespeare in love, city of angels has nicholas cage so fuck how can that be bad. for a recent one atonement is good.
probably the best "feel good" romance that i've seen and remember is amelie, and it should be really really easy to find.
oh wait there is a movie almost exactly like a walk to remember called here on earth, so i guess if you liked the first you might like that.

I was just gonna post a link to your topic Strangeluv!
A Walk To Remember wasn't that bad. I watched it with an ex a couple of years ago and I enjoyed it.
-
does anybody else find it pretty funny how people manage to copy their NERVOUS LAUGHTER when they're typing?
i've been watching a lot of romance movies lately, haha. in real life i'm a bit oversensitive, haha.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are good as hell but yeah I'm really not very into ROMANCE MOVIES I guess.

Melee Master, join Facebook and watch every girl's profile for their favourite movies. You are guaranteed to see:
The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Titanic... maybe Bridge to Terabithia. Anyway, you'll find yo chick flicks there.
-
I watched the notebook recently and whilst I thought the plot was predictable and we'd seen it all before, I was still drawn in by the characters. I dunno, I think it's definitley one of the better romance stories in the simular vain of the word.
Sometimes I like the feeling of almost tearing up even though I know that it's almost ridiculous becuase the characters are purely fictional.

The film "Closer" was just great, its what happens when feelings like lieing, sexuality and ego take overrrr
-
Romantic films and romantic comedy films are probably my guilty pleasure. They all tend to blend together though, the comedy variant following the same formula meaning that there's no way of telling one from another.
I suppose though that Strangeluv's topic had some of the best.
A couple of others that at least make me tear up every time and certainly has some romantic elements to them are probably films like A Very Long Engagement (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0344510/), Big Fish (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319061/) and Finding Neverland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308644/).
I suppose neither Big Fish nor Finding Neverland are really the romantic love kind of stories, but they certainly have a lot of love in them.
Other than this though here is a list of average fairly recent romantic comedies of the most regular kind you might try out:
- Just Like Heaven
- Must Love Dogs
- 10 Things I Hate About You
- The Holiday
- What Women Want
- 50 First Dates
- Kate & Leopold
What these have in common (if I remember them correctly) is that they start out fairly fun and light and by the end it's all sentimentality all the way, all the time. For really recent ones there's also 27 Dresses and Definitely, Maybe.

Yeah, I second this. Closer is an excellent film.
I forgot to mention that my favourite romantic film is probably the English Patient.

yeah watch closer, before sunrise, and before sunset. the latter two are really great and closer is pretty okay too, i thought! they characters are pretty shitty people for the most part and that appealed to me a lot. also watch code 46 because it is tight as fuck (actually it is just PRETTY GOOD but no one ever mentions it or winterbottom at all for that matter and that is kind of a shame i feel because he's a pretty okay director). also since you apparently ARE A WOMAN and cry at terrible mandy moore movies, at the very least code 46 and probably the others as well should have some type of emotional impact on you.
-
ps i am also going to suggest that you watch eternal sunshine if you didn't. i'm not sure if that is technically a ROMANCE movie but that is a big enough part of it that i think it'd suit your needs, and it is actually good, soooo.
and watch lars and the real girl. it's amazing because it is supposed to be touching/heartfelt/sincere but instead it is just funny as hell and the most ridiculous premise for a movie i have every seen anyone ATTEMPT EARNESTLY without irony or satire or humor in mind whatsoever. going by your taste though you might actually LEGITIMATELY like it, so it's a win-win!
-
yeah lars and the real girl is something else. my friend didn't like it because he didn't think it was funny enough for what it was doing, but I kept saying HE'S A FUCKING GOON JESUS when I watched the movie so maybe enjoyment is relative to internet.

code 46 eh? it was ok, but didn't really do it for me. there were nice shots and all (from memory) but it couldn't always keep my attention.

damn it, i wanted to see that movie. my parents saw it and kind of liked it, but were all "what's with this guy?? HUH????" but it sounds dope.
to melee master, i recommend the wedding singer since it kinda fits.

lars and the real girl always sounded kinda interesting to me but i figured that it would either be QUIRKY, HEARTFELT ROMANCE ABOUT A MAN WHO TEACHES A TOWN WHAT IT MEANS TO LOVE... FEEL GOOD MOVIE OF THE YEAR or UNIQUE, INTERESTING, AND ACTUALLY FUNNY MOVIE. basically from what i could tell from the trailer it could go either way so which one is it
-
Actually I love chick flicks a ridiculous amount. It is hard to come up with recommendations though because they really are all exactly the same disposable fluff and they are sort of hard to tell apart.
Closer is really good though!
-
Can Closer be classified as a chick flick? I don't think so. Clive Owen was THE SHIT in that, though, especially when he was cybering with Jude Law.
-
hahaha yeah that has to be one of the funniest scenes in cinema history

yeah it was kind of on the dull side, like all of his movies are, but i feel like that is a certain aesthetic he's going for. he seems like kind of a REALISTIC sort of director (multiple other movies of his look almost like documentaries), so he probably leans towards making things seem incredibly true to life regardless of how engaging they are. anyway what i dug about the movie was that like you said i thought there were a lot of really good shots and i enjoyed the cinematography in general. like remember the scene early on in the club, with the strobe light, that just went on for two minutes? also i thought the premise/plot in general was sort of cool and pretty good for a sci-fi movie, but mostly i really liked the interaction between robins and... whoever the female lead was. i guess i could see why you'd be bored by it but there was a lot about it i was into at the time.
what was kinda gay in hindsight was the SPEAKING MULTIPLE LANGUAGES thing. it is probably pretty realistic that that would happen ultimately but like... if you can't implement it into the film in any realistic way, i kind of think you should just leave it out.

I've (mostly) enjoyed his other movies more, at least. They do have that realistic feel to them--hell, 24 Hour Party People and Tristram Shandy ARE pretty much a mix of documentary and mockumentary (and not quite either if you ask me). And I agree, the premise was good and it may not have worked any other way (certainly not as an action sci-fi film). So yeah that and some of the shots were kind of nice but otherwise it's average or just above average. Not terrible, but not great (and bound to have its fans and haters).
Oh yeah and question with possible spoilers: was it revealed that William had had this happen once before? Or am I now confusing it with Eternal Sunshine?
-
hey ashole every heard of OPPIONS???
-
edited in a q-stion for ya above b@tch ^

nah, i think that was eternal sunshine! but thinking back i am a little confused in retrospect as to why he let her call the authorities or whoever when he knew she had that implant that made her report CODE 46 VIOLATIONS.

yeah I suspected that might be the case. I guess with the whole memory erasure thing I wasn't entirely sure. and really, how could it have happened before!
and that's a good point, regarding the phone call. he obviously realised what was going on/gonna happen, didn't he! what a idoit....

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (a thinker...but amazing), Groundhog Day and Say Anything (two older classics), Garden State and Juno (people say they are "indie" movies, but they really aren't, but they both are still sweet and enjoyable), Big Fish and Edward Scissorhands (if you like your chick flick dashed with amazing visuals and creepiness), and The Princess Bride and Stardust (if you're a fantasy lover).
-
Garden State and Juno are both independent films, what are you talking about.
