Live video of them talking about it (exciting!!) (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/22886841#22886841)
But there's no real articles about it right now. It's still going on right now, and that sucks. I can't think of much to say. Hope no members here are in it (or any family members).
That's a pretty big earthquake...
-
5.8 isn't actually very big. There's been no damage or injuries reported. Plus, the LA area gets earthquakes quite frequently. heh nice try
-
well not THAT frequently and 5.8 is totally noticeable, but yeah no damage or injuries so its not like SUPER BAD. 10 aftershocks too (3 of which were 3.8's) and thats pretty scary.
edit: 16 aftershocks as of 12:03 apparently
-
i mean obviously it's good news that there are no injuries to report but
you know the news story isn't that significant when the photograph going along with the news story is PEOPLE ON THEIR CELL PHONES OUTSIDE oh my
-
an earthquake so devastating....these people are calling other people
"i heard about it on the phone so yeah, it must have been bad"
-
I was in an earthquake once!
-
yeah i was watching the news and they had a telephone interview with some guy in los angeles
Reporter: Sir, can you tell us what you can see out the window?
Man: Well, it looks like people are going on about their day. There's a lot of people talking on their cell phones.
Reporter: Oh, of course. I would imagine.
edit: woah tell us coachfend
-
dont we have a sticky for news articles?
-
yeah, it wasn't really bad or anything. my house shook fairly violently for roughly 3 seconds and then nothing else happened!
-
nah, that's for WEIRD and DUMB news. This is fine where it is, it's just the OP didn't/doesn't seem to know that the quake was relatively tame.
haha CNN's main photo for the story is now SMOG COVERING THE CITY SKYLINE
oh cool we got someone who lives there! hey ric i'm guessing you've been through other earthquakes too? anything major?
-

well i mean i hadn't payed much attention to the news, i just posted it.
also, apparently looking up the richter scale doesn't help because it classifies high-end 5's as "damaging well-constructed buildings etc etc" so i thought it would actually hurt stuff! apparently not.
-
>7 or suck my d*ck.
-

most of the time I'm asleep when earthquakes happen! I live pretty far away from where the sources are, so usually the effects aren't very severe.
-
i was in a 4.5 earthquake in la when i was like 11 but i didnt even know it happened until somebody came into the room and was like omg are you okay that was a pretty crazy earthquake!!!
maybe i am genetically predisposed to earthquake immunity like people who can roll tacos with their tongues

Earlier on in the year we had an Earthquake in England (which is very uncommon), where I live was like... 20 miles from the epicenter. Though not as large as this one (though it could be felt more or less everywhere in England) the difference wasn't all that big. But most people didn't even notice it (late at night, sleeping), those that did just didn't care and went back to sleep.
No offence or anything, but anyone who was even bothered by an earthquake of this size (which is basically a little bit more than a loud fart) must be a real fucking pansy. Lets just hope someone doesn't slam your front door too hard and scare you to death because you confused it for the end of the world or something stupid like that!
-
speaking of natural disasters there aren't any hurricanes this year and I was looking forward to seeing a big ass one before I leave

hey guy just dropping in to let you know you're dumb, well cya
I think when the ground starts shaking people will react and assume that it will be bad. It's better to assume the worst and respond than it is to assume that nothing bad is happening in an actual emergency.
But hey good on you if you're such an internet badass

My grandma said that it felt like one hundred elephants pounding on her roof for thirty seconds.
Yeah, she is a real fucking pansy.

I was in an earthquake once!
me also.

on the front page I saw "earthquake hitting L..." and I was worried it might be Laos *whew*
(GNN) GREGORY NEWS NETWORK 818.988.2599 BY THE GRACE OF GOD LIBERAL CALIFORNIA IS PUNISHED FOR LEGALISING GAY MARRIAGE THIS IS JAMES GREGORY JR WRITER, RADIO, CABLE TV HOST, WORLDWIDE TV HOST ON THE INTERNET, OWNER OF (GNN)

I was wondering how long it would be before someone claimed that this was God's punishment for legalized gay marriage in California. Looks like I didn't have to wait long. Also: God is a pussy if he couldn't even damage a building.

I still don't see why Earth Quakes are so bad, it's not the Earth Quake itself that'll kill you it's the buildings that can't put up with it that'll kill you. If your in the middle of no where on a flat plane whats it gonna do make you trip?
Of course if it was raining fish then it'd be more interesting news.
-
i hate it when people call asking if i felt the earthquake and shit, i've lived in california all my life, this shit happens all the time(most of the time i don't even feel them), i don't care anymore. unless all of LA comes crashing down, then maybe people should be making calls
-
at least its not like the 1994 northridge earthquake.

Pretty much this. Earthquakes are horrible things, but ones like these are just so small that they aren't that big of a deal. The whole day goes by, and unless somebody tells me about the earthquake or I see it on TV, I don't even notice it.
Either that or I think it's a steam truck rolling by.

Well yeah, it would be really convenient if the whole world was flat plane. Thing is, serious earthquakes are really devastating. Naturally all man-made buildings are in danger to collapse but it can also seriously damage the ground, cause landslides, make trees fall and even cause a tsunami.
I could never be able to live in a city or any place which could be hit by a serious earthquake at any given time. Like, when it happens and if it's really serious, is there even much you can do? I would seriously be afraid as hell since it could happen tomorrow, the next week or in the few following years, and the risk of dying is definitely there. What do you guys think about living in an area like that? Even if you don't die, there's a high risk that you are going to lose your home and a lot of your property. Or even worse, someone you know will die. I just can't imagine that.
-
EVERYONE in my summer class thought the person behind them was shaking their desk really hard. I don't know why the quake is such a big deal to some people.
-
This is Richter or Mercalli?
-

Richter.
-
I thought this was pretty serious, because I live in Australia where there are pretty much NO EARTHQUAKES and I thought 5.8 was high or something. Guess I was wrong!
-
i thought i was in an earthquake once but it turned out i was just masturbating

or you could cast Float

Yeah, the earthquake in Lincolnshire earlier this year was only .2 weaker than this one and I (and a lot of other people) slept through it! Not exactly earth shattering in intensity. (incidentally this one has been downgraded to 5.4)
-
it was because it happened in america it was first page news, even though some of you saying it wasn't "that bad". remember awhile back the earthquake in turkey that killed like 30 000 people, but the news coverage (in canada the us, and (mexico?)) was on an earthquake that was less minor that happened in, california (im going off memory here, so correct if im wrong). i think only a couple of people died, but not many heard about this one in turkey that killed so many.
-
"An earthquake happening on one of the world's most documented fault lines?!? This will shock and awe the masses!"
-
5.8 is pretty chickenshit, ESPECIALLY where it hit... Because they should be definitely prepared to handle earthquakes over there.
Like in Chile, every building is pretty much designed to stand strong earthquakes.
-
Especially since it was a 5.4. (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Earthquake-Of-54-Magnitude-Shakes-Southern-California-Although-No-Injuries-Are-Reported/Article/200807415060001)
-
lol @ the judge judy video.
In fairness, if it was a lot worse the building could have collapsed on them so I would have kind of paniced too.

Speaking of which, I don't even remember any news covering the Earthquake in Sichuan which killed 70,000 but the Chinese government tried to keep the information as hush hush as possible to outside news sources.

Funny you would say that, considering that as opposed to the US, Chile has government institutions charged with regulating private insurance companies, healthcare and irregular laboral practices.
-
BLAH BLAH Chile has government BLAH

Actually it was ALL over the news here in Canada everyday. That's probably because we have a large Chinese population here, though.
-
Well my bro's in LA right now and he said that it lasted for about 10 seconds (the shaking the rumbling) and it was actually kind of significant for those 10 seconds but then it was gone after this... 5.8 is actually pretty big but there have obviously been far worse ones in the LA area..
-
I hardly noticed this one, down here in SD.

I would much rather live here than anywhere else. Because our weather hardly changes (it never snows here ), national disasters are very few + far between. Damaging earthquakes are less common than say, tornados are in the midwest and hurricanes are in the Southeast. We're actually pretty safe. Though I guess I can't say that now, seeing as how idiots have been starting massive county fires periodically of late.

Dude what the fuck was your first comment even about?
It was pretty much flaming for no fucking reason.

Yeah, what I said would apply to a hurricane area too because losing your home to a hurricane would suck. But at least there's pretty much always time to evacuate before hurricane hits the land and that's why earthquakes seems more serious to me because at least you can be more prepared for hurricanes.
I suppose I'm just spoiled for living in such a safe area. I'm not aware of a single natural disaster in Finland. No earthquakes, no tornados, no hurricanes, absolutely nothing. The worst we get are some floods which aren't even serious and that's pretty much it. I also couldn't imagine living in a place where the weather never changes. :( I love having four seasons.

Yeah, I'm the same way pretty much. We've had blizzards but those are tolerable. But when I see some place get hammered by something and people are complaining blah blah honestly this is terrible but my first thought is 'haha suckers, ohio rules'
-
I find it bizarre when someone living in tornadoe country is shocked and surprised that a TORNADOE ripped through and destroyed their house. Okay it is pretty sad, but come on you shouldn't be surprised that it was gonna happene eventually. Being dumb founded that it did happen is understandable but thinking that it'd never happen to you somewhere around there is ignorant.
-
My brother lives in LA and was hit by this, I think. Luckily none of my family heard about it until after it happened (otherwise my mother would die of anxiety) but he's okay, thankfully. Scary stuff, though.
