Hey guys, I'm getting a laptop in the next week or so, but it's not so good on the graphics side. It's only a work laptop for school and for writing etc, but I want to put some games on it. Can you guys recommend any oldschool rpgs or any oldschool games that'll work? The laptop has an NVIDIA 6150 or something rugged like that.
I have the Fallout series, and that Eschalon: Book 1 (pretty cool game too), and I have Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 etc. Any other games you guys can recommend? Anything that'll run on that video card?
-
Baldur's Gate 1 + 2 + Expansions, Icewind Dale 1 + 2 + Expansions and Planescape: Torment.
-
blech icewind dale. black isle didn't do anything correctly after fallout and bioware pretty much carried their sorry asses by developing the infinity engine and telling them to develop planescape torment because they were too busy with baldur's gate.
buy morrowind. it runs real well now and there's a few patches and mods like the morrowind fps optimizer which removes every bug in the game, speeds up processing, lowers loading times, and makes the game more enjoyable to look at and fun to play.
-
A friend of mine has Morrowind, but I was unsure if it would run on that kind of graphics card. I'm guessing it would though, considering it's a relatively old game. I'll try and get my hands on the Baldurs Gate games, I can remember playing them a few years ago and they were pretty cool.
-
Planescape: Torment is really awesome man. You should get that!
-
Recently I've been playing Dungeon Siege 2. You could try the first one if your card can't handle the second.
-
Chrono Cross and Xenogears but you'll have to emulate them
-
Not too sure about any PC RPGs, but you can always try Breath of Fire 3 and 4 if you haven't already. Emulated of course.
-
Fair enough. Emulating games completely slipped my mind for some reason. Thanks for the tips.
-
Arcanum's really good, that's what I play on my newly-acquired laptop.
Anachranox and Deus Ex are great too.
I also play dawn of war, but that's not really an RPG.
-
Septerra Core is supposed to be pretty good, for a PC RPG.
-
Guilty Gear XX #Reload

Dunno about 3 but BoF 4 apparently actually got a PC port. In English even I believe. Funny how basically NO ONE heard of it. Even I am only going on what I THINK I've heard.
-
yeah but it's infinitely easier to "obtain" the playstation version, that and i heard the pc one was kind of buggy.
-

It was okay. I'd recommend it only if you don't like any of the other games already suggested.
-
Thanks for all the help guys, this is great. I'm gonna try source a couple of these games.
Also, I'm hugely surprised about the BoF IV port. I didn't even hear about that. I'll probably try to get that, or I'll just emulate the PS1 game.
Cheers.
-
Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. I liked those when they were new, and still do.
-
Check out Nox, its a great older game in the fashion of diablo 2.
And if you're getting into emulation, definitely Shining Force on genesis, Secret of Mana on SNES, or Final Fantasy Tactics on PSX.
-
Grandia II came out on pc. It's excelent.
-
If you think your computer could handle PSX emulation, I say Vandal Hearts 1 and 2, I'm recommending it because I'm playing the first one now (on my PSP) and having a blast.
-
Play Grandia, emulate the PS1 sucker now. Holy fuck, that's an incredible RPG.
EDIT: No, seriously, go do it.
-
Yup. The first grandia is cool too.
Also check anachronox out:

Seconding Arcanum (best game music ever, by the way).
Spiderweb Software (http://spiderwebsoftware.com/) has Avernum (Exile) and Geneforge, two series with tolerable graphics, enjoyable gameplay, great immersion, and huge demos. Seriously, they're wizards with atmosphere.

Forgot silver for a sec there!

Good luck getting Silver to play on anything other than Win98

Good luck getting Silver to play on anything other than Win98
there is no fix for silver in xp , running in xp compatibility mode works on few occasions so heres the fix , the game just doesnt run on NTFS
this worked for me ->
download microsoft virtual pc microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx its free for 45 days and isnt really expensive. its a little like an emulator but alot not. all you need to do is install it then set up a new "virtual machine" onto this virtual machine put windows 95 98 or god forbid it windows ME...
once you have set up and installed the pc install silver onto the "virtual PC" ( you wont need drivers etc for you devices on the "virtual pc" it will just work =$ )this way you can load your normal XP/2k or what ever and you dont need to re-partition your drive and have a 2 OS on it to get complete backwards compatibillity for anything , your new OS will run in a window and you can even have several machines for different things. so yes get virtual pc and see if you can get a hold of a backdated windows cd and you will be laughing. this requires knowledge of installing older windows operating systems but to be honest its pretty self explanitory

I can get the game to run but the graphics are fucked up. After starting a new game the backdrops fade in and out and the character models are twisted.
Now if I can get this "virtual pc" thing to run Omnikron then I'll be in business.
-
System Shock 2(sort of expensive, but you might be able to download it)
Half Life
Baldur's Gate series
Starcraft
Gothic II(Maybe, not too sure)
-
dude half life and starcraft are NOT rpgs and gothic II is awful did you read the topic?
but yeah System shock 2 and Deus Ex baldurs gate is alright

but I want to put some games on it. Can you guys recommend any oldschool rpgs or any oldschool games that'll work?
I see the topic title, but did you read the first post? Also, a lot of people enjoy Gothic II, thank you very much.
-
oh yeah i read that but it's been a while and i'm pretty sure he wants RPGs first, but ANYWAY shit (or at least rpg elements).
And also not many people at all enjoy Gothic II actually and as a recommendation it's pretty gay considering it's not oldschool at ALL.
-
That's why I put maybe beside it, and since so many people listed RPGs, I thought I would list something else. That way he got more of a variety.
-
buy morrowind.
I might try this. Good thing I read this zillionth 'recommend me games' topic.
-
Thanks for all the recommendations guys, I've um, managed to get my hands on most of these games. I'm trying them out, just to see what ones I like and don't like.
Also, any games that will work on that video card are fine. I'm not too worried about the genre as long as it's not something like "barbie adventure" or some shit like that.
I've been playing Doom a lot lately, brings back so many childhood memories :)
-
i noticed that no one mentioned neverwinter nights and the bajillion expansions plus modules. i just "obtained" the infinite dungeons module which is basically neverwinter the roguelike.
-
I have NWN Gold Edition, which is Shadows of Undrentide (or whatever) and Hordes of the Underdark.
I might try to "obtain" the other expansions, if I can.
-
Not a big fan of roguelike games. I couldn't bring myself to recommend neverwinter, though it sprang to mind.
-
bahhh Neverwinter Nights. The original campaign has a horrible ending, and the first expansion is absolute shit. If you're going to get NWN get the Diamond Edition, because Hordes of the Underdark is easily the best part of NWN. You could just play modules instead, though. I recommend Darkness over Daggerford, in that case.
-
PLAY THIS!!!!!

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2- Star Wars games that are pretty cool, though might be a little graphics intensive (3d graphics)
Uplink- a little out of the rpg mold, this is a game about hacking into various computers and companies and upgrading your equipment. Awesome soundtrack, imo.
Space Rangers 2- Kinda like Heroes of Might and Magic, but in space. I highly enjoyed this game, but it's not for everyone. Check out some reviews.
For turn-based strategy, you might look into such gems as X-Com: UFO Defense and Jagged Alliance 2.
If you're into adventure, check out The Longest Journey and Discworld Noir.
Emulation-wise (SNES), you might try Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, and Earthbound. Actraiser, Terranigma, and EVO are a bit more action-oriented, but fun, nonetheless.
These were already mentioned, but I recommend them, too.
Anachronox- the first hour is kinda slow, but gets awesome later
Planescape: Torment- the most fantastic rpg I've ever played, but I'd only recommend this if you can appreciate literacy :P
Omikron: Nomad Soul- superb first half, but the immersion-factor gets a little muddled later on. Worth trying, at least.
Grandia 2- I really enjoyed this game, but some people swear the first one's better (I haven't played #1). The second one is available on PC, though.
Arcanum- one of the best rpgs in terms of role-playing. Your stats and conversation choices really DO make a difference (try playing a low int character and watch the language in your diary and conversations devolve into Cro-Magnon- hilarious!). Too bad its combat engine is kinda weak, though. Also, it was released in a semi-buggy state, so make sure to save often.
EDIT- If you decide to check out any of the old Bioware games (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment), you might consider trying out this mod that allows you to play at unsupported resolutions (which is great because monitors/video cards nowadays are much more robust): http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/
For Deus Ex (a neat old FPS, though it shows its age), there's a high-def re-texturing project in the works: http://offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/
For Knights of the Old Republic 2, a "total restoration" project that's (sort of) nearing completion: http://www.team-gizka.org/index.html

Lufia 2 Terranigma,
Woot! I'd def recommend these 2 games! I loved them back in the day and still pllay them now! Lufia 2 in particular has had at least 7 playthroughs.
Also on emu terms, and a non rpg for variatiy, i'd recommend Banjo and Kazzoie This is easily my fav N64 game and beats mario 64 to (a cute) death! It's large, fun and has memarable characters and levels.
Also, any games that will work on that video card are fine. I'm not too worried about the genre as long as it's not something like "barbie adventure" or some shit like that.
I know you prolly dont want to hear this, but Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue is a lot of fun, if somewhat short.
