So my grandpa is very into their music, but when he showed me some music videos I didn't really see anything interesting. But tell me, what do you think of them? Do you like them? Are they worth listening to? Should I check them out?
-
Check out Dummy and then if you still don't like them jump off a cliff or something.
-
jk lol. ;)
-
Portishead?
hows this a question
and you didn't even like their videos!! I dunno, I don't think you'll ever like them if none of it clicks. like Jet Son said get Dummy or their new album (isn't trip-hop)
hey what do youguys think of massive attack? I put off listening to them and then I downloaded an album recently and it wasn't good besides the tina turner cover.
-
it is just music for sex.
not good, basically.
-
They're just very very avant garde. I heard one of their songs on NPR or something once and really liked it (it might have been machine gun). It was part of their new album Third... it's alright. Beth Gibbons has got this really cold, quavering voice which works pretty well with the songs. I think they're pretty talented, but not something you'd listen to in the car.

only song by them I like is
Only You
I got all their albums and listened to them a lot when I went through kind of a chillout/ambient craze not that long ago... but I havent really listened to them much since then heh.

I didn't get into Portishead until their recent album so I sort of feel like I'm not a real fan. I also do like their first two albums, but their latest is really, really good and pretty different from their earlier ones. The song I posted, The Rip, is my favorite Portishead song and if you like it you should probably start out on their latest album, which is way less hip hop, and work backwards.

Oh wow, I really like that video.
Also, I'd really like to see them live. I think that'd be a really cool show!

Whoa, that video was awesome. I liked the song too, but every other song I've heard from Portishead just doesn't appeal to me.
-
Since we're posting videos. My two personal favourite portishead tracks are "Roads" and "Glory Box."
-
Is it just me or does it sound like she's not at all confident in her singing voice. Like I was thinking that she didn't sound confident in the video Chef posted, but then I started listening to Roads and at first was thinking maybe it was just that song but then she started singing and it was the same quiet little girl I don't really want people to hear me sing.
-
Darn it I posted The Rip video first but nobody said anything :(
-
what a shame ragnar
you were first and all.....
-
Also your grandpa likes portishead that's awesome
portishead-liking gramps are so cool
-
I think it's cool if you somehow write it metaphorically, not straight to the point lyrics.

yeah really
anyway portishead is a lot of fun. their new album is super cool and their first album is still the best. sometimes i turn it on and it sounds so played out and done to death and obvious maybe, probably because i've heard a billion other "trip hop" bands/songs/etc, but it's still good, fuck it.

You mean basically any Portishead song can be about heroin use if you take the lyrics literally, because that's what I was saying
